Very informative resource, but not enough emphasis was on the dangers in PNG. Everything is locked, with armed guards standing in front of hotels in Port Moresby. In Mt. Hagen we were bussed 100 yards from the airport to the place where small Cessna planes took off for our lodges. In Tari, we were bussed, again, with police escort, to the airport and locked behind the gates to protect us against "rascals." Karawari lodge on Karawari River and the Ambua lodge in the highlands are well described in the book, while the prices are correctly stated. Seems that travel in PNG is not recommended with security problems throughout the country and prices of $800 per night, as quoted for the Ambua lodge.Mailed several cards from the M/V Caldonian Sky, a cruise ship, paying 16 pounds sterling (the ship is British registry), but the cards never arrived to the States or to Europe. The ship's agent was to mail the cards. The ship's crew would not let us walk to town to visit the post office. Too bad, the stamps from PNG must be nice, but the country is dysfunctional.

LP is pretty much the only game in town for PNG, and it's not bad. While many sources over-exaggerate the hazards of Port Moresby and other towns, LP makes light of the crime problem. Certainly all the locals and expatriates who I met warned me over and over to be careful. The truth lies in between LP and the dire warnings. In the villages, where we were taken in by local guides, we had wonderful welcomes.PNG is very expensive to visit (lots of plane travel to get to places, and absurdly high hotel prices) but it's a perfectly fascinating place and one of perhaps 2 places on the planet (the other being the Amazon jungle) to get a sense of life in stone age times. The remote villagers are changed less than one might think by 80 years of exposure to European culture. Recommended for experienced travelers.

Very helpful before my trip, though it said that there was no currency exchange at the airport, but there was.

I was in PNG last year. What a terrific place for photography. The LP guide was a super aide to me for 3 vacation weeks I will never forget! Highly recommended! I hope to use it again in the near future for a trip to the Solomon Islands!

pretty helpful in general, I am working in POM which is a little different than "traveling" there but still a good resource.

Quite good as an overview. The book is quite thin on the Solomons...which is where we went. At least it gave us a bit of a steer.

On time and all very good. Thanks

Haven't had time to read carefully, but seems to cover the bases

What Is the Constitution?     The first time the thirteen American colonies declared themselves a free nation was in the Declaration of Independence, written in July of 1776. By then, the colonies were fed up with being ruled from afar by Great Britain. A bloody war for independence broke out—the Revolutionary War.   At the start, winning the war seemed impossible. How could the ragtag rebel army ever defeat Great Britain, the mightiest military power in the world? But a fierce drive to be free fired the rebels’ spirits.    By 1783, the war was over—and the colonies were no longer colonies. They were states in a free and independent nation: the United States of America!   Even while at war, the new country had needed some sort of government. So, in 1776, a group of leaders of the Revolution had quickly patched together some rules. They were called the Articles of Confederation.   Nobody wanted a government that was all-powerful. That’s what the states were breaking away from. So, they created a congress that was too weak to do any harm. Unfortunately, the result was a government that was too weak to do much good, either.   By 1787, just four years after the United States’ glorious victory, the young country was in trouble. National pride didn’t exist yet. In fact, if you asked most people what their country was, they named their state. It was easy to see why. Over their whole lifetime, people rarely traveled more than thirty miles away from where they were born. In 1785, a man from Georgia wrote that he was leaving his “country” to go to “a strange land amongst strangers.” The “strange land” was New York!   States quarreled often over where their state boundary lines were and which state “owned” certain rivers. Enemies abroad smirked at America’s troubles. Didn’t all this arguing prove that the upstart nation was not capable of ruling itself without a powerful king?   America’s young government needed fixing—and soon. So, during the horribly hot and sticky summer of 1787, fifty-five men from twelve states gathered in Philadelphia for a special meeting. (Rhode Island wouldn’t come.) Their mission was to change the Articles of Confederation. Most had no idea they were going to frame—to plan out—a whole new system of government!   The framers, which is what history books call these men, had to find answers to big, thorny questions. Who decided if the United States would go to war again? What powers should be given to the head of the government? What should happen if leaders abused their power? Who should be allowed to vote? How would laws get passed?   For four months, the framers debated . . . and debated . . . and debated. Tempers flared. Voices rose. Every man cared deeply about his ideas. It was hard work to listen to the other side. So much was at stake! They knew they were trying to decide the fate for “millions yet unborn,” as delegate George Mason said.   At some points, writing a new constitution seemed hopeless. Would an agreement ever be reached?     Chapter 1: A Limping Government      In 1787, the United States of America had a name. And it had a flag. Yet many things were missing to make it a true nation.   There was no president. There was no central court system. Neither was there a US army or navy. There was no Senate or House of Representatives—only a weak “Congress.” Congress could pass laws, but it could not enforce them. For instance, Congress could charge taxes to pay off war debts. But it had to rely on the goodwill of the states to pay up.   People’s loyalty to their state made it hard for them to think of themselves as Americans. During the Revolution, George Washington asked soldiers from New Jersey to swear loyalty to America. What an odd request! They said that New Jersey was their country.   Loyalty to one’s state was rooted in history. The thirteen colonies had been settled at different times by different groups of people. Each state developed its own way of life, often with its own religion and customs. Strict Puritans had settled New England. Peace-loving Quakers founded Pennsylvania. Although the main language of the colonies was English, tens of thousands spoke German in Pennsylvania. Shopkeepers and fishermen thrived in New England, whereas the South was mainly agricultural.   The Articles of Confederation held the states together well enough to fight the war. But afterward, each state was happy to go its own way again. Soldiers returned home. And each state got busy creating its own constitution and electing its own leaders.   But what about being a country? Some leaders (like George Washington, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton) wanted the United States to be a strong nation with a solid central government, one that would oversee all the states. These leaders were called nationalists.   But other leaders wanted power to remain with the states, just as it did with the Articles of Confederation. The Articles promised that the states would remain sovereign. That meant each state was still its own boss. What about the union? The Articles described the union loosely, as a “league of friendship.”   How well did this government work? Not too well. By 1787, America’s troubles could fill a long list.   Some states charged fees on goods bought in other states, as if they were foreign countries. Lands west of the original thirteen colonies were being settled, and disagreements broke out over which states controlled them.   Continental money was all but worthless. So, seven states printed their own paper money but it was no good outside of their boundaries.   George Washington, back home in Virginia, grew alarmed at what was happening to his country. Congress is “a half-starved, limping government,” he complained, “always moving on crutches and tottering at every step.”   Also, in 1786 a crisis broke out in western Massachusetts. Many poor farmers were losing their land because they couldn’t pay their state’s high taxes.   Under Daniel Shays, a former Revolutionary War captain, a mob of two thousand farmers decided to rebel. They marched to Springfield armed with axes, pitchforks, and old muskets.   The weak Congress couldn’t put together an armed force. So, Massachusetts sent in its own troops and stopped the rebellion. In the end, four men lay dead.   Shays’s Rebellion shook the nation. Americans were killing Americans! “I am mortified beyond expression,” said George Washington. (Mortified means very, very embarrassed.)   Alexander Hamilton had this to say: “There is only one remedy—to call a convention of all the states, and the sooner the better.” If the government wasn’t made stronger, it could fall apart.   Even Congress agreed that the Articles of Confederation needed changes. So it asked the states to elect delegates to attend a special meeting in Philadelphia, in May of 1787. Newspapers called it the “Grand Convention.” No one called it a Constitutional Convention, of course, because who knew that a whole new Constitution was about to be written?

Last night, my almost 7yr old grandson and I finished reading, "What Is the Constitution?" What a fascinating read! I've always felt the Constitution was an incredible document and that the United States is such a great country because it was built on such a framework. But I've never really thought about what it took to get the document written and, more importantly, agreed on. This was only 4 years after the Revolutionary War. We were 13 independent states and people's identity was more rooted in identity with their state rather than the country as a whole. The delegates argued fiercely for months and some of the most brilliant aspects of the resulting document came about through inspired but exhausting compromise.

I’m a fourth grade teacher and my students love this series. I’m sure this book by Brennan Demuth will be a favorite when school resumes and we study our country’s early history. It’s a gem. Demuth has a knack for making history come alive to young readers, and this book is particularly suspenseful as she narrates the story of how our remarkable Constitution came to be. Kids will also appreciate the vivid details of the historical time period.

My first grader loves the Who HQ series. This book was especially good - very informative and interesting. I learned a lot, too!

good for kids

Needed this to catch some kids up

Mandatory teaching by all schools! Don't let your children be dumbed down by politicians!

Our 8-year-old daughter is really just starting out in gymnastics... she's in lessons but really has taught herself a lot of things. We thought a book with tips and tricks would be a great accompaniment to some mats and beams we got her for Christmas. However, this book isn't what we expected. Not that it's a terrible book, it's just certainly not a "how-to" and contains no tricks or tips. It's very thin and basically just explains the difference between floor routines, bar routines, etc. I'd say it's good for maybe someone who knows nothing about what gymnastics is and needs an explanation of what gymnasts actually do.

Nice book with great pictures and easy to read instructions. My daughter found it useful and she's been in gymnastics for years.

I bought it thinking it would give my about-to-be-intermediate-gymnast daughter some insight into improving her act, but once we read it, we realized it's intended to draw beginners gymnasts' motivation, great for that purpose, anyway.

Daughter loved it.

VERY GOOD REFERENCE FOR A COACH!

For your beginning gymnast. It has all the basics. I'd recommend.

Frommer's detailed description is great reading for a traveler, like me, who likes to plan a trip well in advance. I like the excellent content and appreciate the Metro Map and the separate Montreal & Quebec-City Map being included! The book is a good value for the money! Montreal's free-walking tour, starting in May, is not included in the book, however one can Google that for details.. So far, because I found the book to be so helpful and well organized, I have purchased three copies for friends and family. Purchasing another Frommer's 'Montreal day by day' today because a friend's dog chewed my copy to bits.

I bought this for a family member who will be living in Montreal as part of a semester abroad program. I think it will work out well - smaller than a typical paperback, a nice foldout map, and covers a variety of topics. Typical Frommer's product, which I have always used and liked.

The book has information on the primary places of interest. The map of Montreal is of limited use as it only covers the main downtown area. I was staying in Mile End and could not use the map to find places they recommended. Had to use Google Maps which incurred international roaming charge. Not the best guide I have used.

Frommer's was a wonderful way of seeing Montreal. The places of interest, the restauarants and the map provided were so very helpful. There were no disappointments at all. Wonderful vacation!!

The print it is too small it is just ok

Very helpful with lots of suggestions and ideas of what to see and do. It is just the right size for a pocket, pack or purse so it went everywhere with us. The maps are great; they saved us from being lost several times.

We carried this handy guide everywhere with us in Montreal. It was extremely helpful with great information and handy, but not cumbersome, maps.

Great book! We visited a lot of the places in the book. A lot of great tips we would have missed out on without the book.

[This review also appears on Andi's Young Adult Books.]It's the Summer of 2012, which means it is time for the Summer Olympics in London, England. This athletic tradition has deeper roots than some kids can imagine. A Passion for Victory seeks to tell the story of that tradition, starting with the Ancient Greeks through the early modern era.It opens with a chronology that highlights major events. The first story is about a man who survived the icy waters after the Titanic sank and went on to be an Olympic champion. The timing of that story is also notable because 2012 marks the 100 year-anniversary of the Titanic sinking. The first two chapters go into a lot of detail about the original Olympic games that took place in Ancient Greece. It compares those games to the modern ones. The next several chapters focus on the revival of the modern Olympic games in the 1800s, particularly the first 100 years. The epilogue focuses on the Olympics around WWII and includes several photographs. An appendix features lists of medal records won from 1896 to 1948.This book reads very much like a textbook and isn't as engaging as others I have read. The language used is more appropriate for older readers, which is why I have it classified as young adult and not so much as a chapter book. Also, discussions of Hitler and political topics are more appropriate for older students. These aspects of the Olympics are not as often discussed when talking about the topic. I did also notice much more discussion of women in the politics, as well. It is full of lots of information and resources for further study.I received a complimentary eARC in exchange for my honest review.

As other reviewers have written, this is a good book for people with cataracts who are unfamiliar with the surgery which is the only proven treatment for the condition. It is written clearly, and while the author minimizes the use of medical jargon, he is not condescending. I do have some reservations, however. The first is typical of materials on this subject. For some reason, doctors and others involved in cataract surgery boast of its 90% success rate. Well, last year there were some 4 million cataract surgeries in the U.S. A 90% success rate means that some 400,000 of those surgeries failed. All those people went through the trauma and expense of this procedure and could see no better afterwards than before (the doctors’ definition of failure); some were much worse off. If this is a fact, it should surely be disclosed; but it’s hardly something to be proud of, or something which should allay a prospective patient’s fears. The second is more subtle. While the author mentions some complications which may arise during and after cataract surgery, his descriptions of them can be too brief and anodyne. For example, he mentions the risks of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) in the eyes of men who are taking (or have ever taken) an alpha blocker for an enlarged prostate. It turns out that this drug not only relaxes the muscles around the prostate and bladder to facilitate urination, it also weakens the iris dilator muscles in the eyes raising the risk that the pupil could become un-dilated during surgery with potentially disastrous consequences. Dr. Richardson concludes (p. 55) that your surgeon will “need to take extra precautions prior to or during your surgery to minimize the risks of IFIS.”Well, yes ... but. First, my description is much stronger than Dr. Richardson’s, which makes IFIS seem like a minor problem rather than what it is: a potential catastrophe. Second, the surgeon will need to take extra precautions both prior to AND – not OR – during the surgery. Finally, and most importantly, the nature of those precautions are not discussed in any way. They include the possible use of iris hooks and other appliances and a significantly protracted surgical procedure, and if IFIS is severe, bad things may still happen. The author does include a reference to an article by David Chang, the San Francisco surgeon who discovered the association of prostate drugs and IFIS in 2005, but many people reading this book may not follow that up, and that article is highly technical. Then there’s the question of how to pay for cataract surgery. It’s not cheap. In his own practice, Dr. Richardson charges from just under $4,000 to just over $6,000, depending upon lens choice and including hospital costs. That’s per eye, so if you need both eyes done, you’re looking at something in the area of $10,000, which for many people is a lot of money. But Medicare and/or insurance covers cataract surgery (not including premium lenses), so you’re only in for deductibles and co-pays, right? Well, not if Dr. Richardson is your surgeon, because he doesn’t accept Medicare or private insurance. Maybe you can be reimbursed for some or all of these costs, or maybe not, but the hassle is yours as is the necessity to have or borrow the money up front.I do nevertheless recommend this book because, for all its faults, it’s one of the best and most honest out there. The claims often made for cataract surgery are simply outrageous. You may be told by your optometrist that this is a safe and simple procedure taking just a few minutes and next day you will see like you did when you were twelve. Dr. Richardson makes no such claims, indeed makes clear in detail the extensive preparations the patient must make, the cataract evaluation session with the surgeon, the preoperative session with the surgeon, the 2-4 hours you will spend at the surgical center on the big day, and the weeks of care afterwards – and that’s if everything goes well, which it doesn’t always do. He also shows his awareness of his patients’ problems by producing this book in large print; he offers a CD of it for those who can’t see well enough to read it even so.

I was always nearsighted but my prescription had remained fairly unchanged for decades. Suddenly I was at the opthamology office every 8 months, then every 6 months. Finally we hit the wall - my cataracts had grown to where my vision could no longer be corrected with new eyeglasses and my doctor laid out the options. It seemed cataract surgery and IOLs were the way to go, but it is scary to think of someone cutting on your eye. I put off the surgery until afther the holidays and right around the first of the year I found this book on Amazon. I read it once straight through and then I read it a second time more carefully making notes and jotting questions for my doctor. After reading and gaining an understanding of the procedure I felt so much better about the whole process. When I went in for my appointment to have the IOL measurements taken a great deal of this same information was presented to me but I felt so much better prepared to ask questions and was not at all overwhelmed by all of the information my doctor provided because this book had given me a great foundation. This is a great resource to help you understand what has happened to your eyes and the procedure to correct it. I had my surgeries in January and February and now my vision is clear and bright and I am no longer nearsighted! I only wear glasses for reading and I feel so much more confident driving and going out into the world.

This is a detailed and clear explanation of cataract surgery options and procedures. While I haven’t had the surgery yet, and I’m understandably concerned about the safety and well-being of my eyes (I only have two)—this seems a really valuable reference.

Dr. Richardson's book is a wonderful reference book. It explains everything you need to know to make informed decisions about cataract surgery. Luckily we came across it just before my hisband's first cataract appointment! The book has large print and is easy to understand; no medical background is necessary. The explanation about the various intraocular lenses is particularly important since one's choice affects what glasses will be worn in the future as well as one's pocketbook. I am so grateful I found this book and heartily recommend it to everyone!!Naomi Lieberman

Always do your research before any surgery, reason for buying this book. It give you a good idea of various options in regards to the IOL and types of surgeries and options. East read too with links to other informational sites.

This book will be of great help to those contemplating cataract surgery. It helps the patient understand the process, what to look for in their surgeon and what questions to ask. I recommend it. I was not aware of this book until after my cataract surgery, but that experience enables me to judge the book from a unique perspective. Been there, done that! You might wonder why someone who has had the surgery would read the book, well, one can never know too much and I needed to understand something that occurred during my surgery. This book gave me the answer.

If I ever find a really good, comprehensive, informative, well written book on cataracts, it will be a wonder. Honest, it's easier to find information about diverticulitis which is neither as common nor as hard to treat.

This book is extreamly informative and easy to understand. The Information is complete. I am facing Cataract Surgery and have other serious eye problems as well, These issues are also addressed in Dr. Richardson's book. . If Dr. Richardson had a practice in the New York, New Jersey area, I would, without a doubt, try to have him accept me as his patient. I would then feel much more confident about the outcome of my surgery.

My 7-year-old daughter had some questions about bodies and babies, so I bought this book based on it's excellent reviews. I read it alone to review the content, and ultimately decided not too read it to my daughter. I ultimately ended up using her copy of "National Geographic Kids Ultimate Body-Pedia" to show her diagrams of the reproductive system and explained the basics using those (and sonogram pictures from when I was pregnant for her to talk about pregnancy)."Where Did I Come From" is very cleverly written, and I love it's description of conception and pregnancy. The description of sex was too graphic and lovey-dovey for what I thought was a good explanation for a seven-year-old with divorced parents. It goes into several pages of descriptions of kissing, thrusting, erections, the male orgasm, and ultimately makes sex sound like a very male-centric act (and always, curiously, in missionary position). On the bright side, it did let me collect MY thoughts and gave me the confidence to explain things to my kid with the level of detail and context that I felt was appropriate. Yes, it was an awkward conversation, but there were lots of laughs and good questions. We focused more on "this is what happens when an egg and sperm get together and this is actually how it got there" and a discussion about making healthy choices and less on schmoopy descriptions of "what happens when mommies and daddies really love each other".So my recommendation (if you are like me)? Just listen to your kids questions and answer them. Get the Ultimate Body-Pedia or a similar atlas for kids. Pull out some sonograms. If you really feel like the discussion needs more audio-visuals, pull up some nature videos. Talk about experiences with pregnancy and a few memories on the day your kid was born. Just remember, it can, and should be, an evolving conversation. My kid doesn't need overwhelming detail in one go. She needs someone to listen and to provide good information as she grows.

I love this book. It opened the door to an easier-than-I-thought-it'd-be conversation for my husband and I to have with our two daughters. For us, the conversations that have stemmed from this book have ranged from puberty and our changing bodies, to pornography (good pictures, bad pictures), to inappropriate touching/looking, to showing affection in a loving relationship.A friend recommended this to me as I was struggling with a very curious 3rd grade daughter and an extremely modest 5th grade daughter. The two of them knew some general information already, it takes a man and a woman and they need to be naked, but I didn't know how to explain more of the details of intercourse in a way they would understand but wouldn't shock them either. I felt like my girls were ready (and needed) to know.My husband and I read it together with our daughters and it created an important level of confidence and comfort and trust in our relationship and for this topic. It opened the door to NOT EMBARRASSING conversations and further questions my girls had. I think this is an excellent resource to begin the conversation of sex and understanding that intercourse is for a loving relationship and for creating life. This book explains intercourse in a kid-friendly, yet still accurate way...from an erect penis entering the vagina to ejaculation...then onto fertilization and progression of a fetus to birth. **I especially liked the explanation that when two people love each other they want to be as close to one another as possible, and the man's penis in the woman's vagina is as close as you can be.**

Answers the questions! And, it goes beyond sex into baby development. It recognizes that the parent isn't necessarily comfortable having the conversation, too!Our kids were 5 & 6 when we read this to them. Both found it enlightening without being weird or uncomfortable. We bring this out for an introductory reading or two, then it gets hidden away until there are future questions.

I had this book as a child and it did cause lots of giggles and jokes for us kids, but I had to get it when I had a baby. While not 100% accurate and definitely not commiserate with today’s types of families, there is some great information about the “birds and the bees.” At the very least, it will stimulate the conversation. And even after all of these years, I remembered the pictures and saw the correlation when I got pregnant.

I bought this book in hardback about 20 years ago when my daughter started asking the question 'how are babies made'. This book tells the correct story, using correct terms, but in a more understanding way for young minds to comprehend. I am now purchasing another copy to give to my daughter for her children.

I read it to my 7&8 yr olds at the same time and despite a bit of chuckling and red faces it was actually very easy, painless, and they now KNOW THE FACTS! This book anticipates that the conversation is awkward and attacks that head on, by acknowledging that it can be difficult and that they went out and asked kids what they knew (or believed) as a major part of the research. It’s illustrated in a very natural and appropriate manner that helps the dialogue and took me an hour to go through, including plenty of Q&A.

8-year-old was red-faced enough that I knew he understood, but not embarrassed enough that he didn't want to talk about it.

I was going to give my 10 year old daughter the birds and the bees talk and I opened the book to a picture and was immediately disgusted. This is not something I would ever want my daughter to envision that kind of initimate stuff to look like.
