This is my first Rough Guides book. I usually use Lonely Planet, but the LP for Malaysia is really out of date and is pretty terrible. So I bought this one.How does it stack up to LP? There are some good points and bad points here. First of all, the font makes it easier to read than LP. Second, the writing is clearer and more straightforward than LP. There is more background information about a place and a site than with LP. Rough Guides lists more budget-friendly hotels and hostels, but at the same time, party hostels get higher ratings than non-party hostels.The biggest problem with the book, though, is the binding. There is something wrong with it so that it's difficult to open the book up fully to read the whole page making reading it a pain in the butt.

This book is a well researched look into mostly beer styles that are now either extinct or on the fringes of interest. The sections on each beer are quite brief and do not include pictures but do include at least one if not more homebrew recipes of each style. Many of the recipes are really based on process rather than ingredients (e.g., decoction or step-mashing) which makes them interesting to learn about but could be quite laborious to actually reproduce. The book feels more like an amalgamation of what could have been articles for an ongoing column in a homebrew magazine rather than a complete research book on historical styles of beer from a certain region of the world. The book also does not include any tasting notes from the author about what the modern recreations of the beer tasted like which seemed odd (Did the author ever actually try the recipes he has published?). The lack of depth along with the lack of historical photos or pictures is my reason for not giving the book a 5-star review. That said its a worthy purchase for a homebrewer wishing to begin exploring this topic, especially given the low price of this short book.

The Afterword written in 2000 by Alan Wolfe provides a noteworthy example of failing to understand that the relevance of Mill's work was not limited to the 50's and 60's. In short, Wolfe dismissed Mill's work as irrelevant at the time of his writing, and concluded that the military-industrial complex had long since been killed off by capitalism. In the short-sightedness of the pre-911 world, Wolfe's analysis would stand unchallenged. But in the post-911 world we live in today, we have been thrown back into the world Mills wrote about, as if we had never left it. Apparently not much has change. The fall of the Berlin wall and the ensuing prosperity of the post-cold war years merely moved the military-industrial complex pot to simmer on the back burner; that is until the next crisis when the "warlords" (Mills's term for the uniting of the military, economic and political powers to be) could once again move it back to the front burner. 911 and the war on terror were that crisis.If you want to find out why Congress seems so incredibly out of touch and useless today, read this book. When Alan Wolfe wrote his “new Afterward” for this book in 2000 it seems to have been regarded as an important updating of Mills' analysis. Now, seventeen years later, I disagree.One of Mills' cautionary emphases was that the Power Elite's alliance of military, industrial, and political leaders would inevitably lead to the United States sustaining highly profitable perpetual warfare. Mills observed over a half century ago that, despite the huge attention and money directed to their campaigns and careers, most members of Congress are not major players in the making of the key decisions about which the Deep State really cares. And even the handful of key congressional players are more the Deep State's tools than actually calling the shots.Finally, Wolfe thought that Mills was unduly pessimistic about the likelihood that the American public would ever become cognizant of the Power Elite/Deep State and muster the collective will to oppose it. I had hope for this book, especially with a title like that. But I was very disappointed, as it did not deliver. I think it is the format I disliked (or perhaps was just very different from my expectations). It is basically a bunch of questions to ask yourself and journal about, which might be best for someone who is at the beginning of their self-exploration journey. But as someone who is already in therapy, these questions are too basic and general. I feel like they really should be explored with a therapist, and not on your own.

As a therapy patient of nearly 15 years, I am impressed by how Dr. Bruce Kehr approaches his clients and uses this book as a sort of “pocket therapist” for its readers. I’ve done a lot of exploring and healing over the years, and am certain that EVERYONE could benefit from this work. As a parent now, I am focused on how I can best raise my children to be emotionally mature adults who take responsibility for their choices and actions. My children are very privileged and live with all the benefits of being in a upper-middle class family, so it’s challenging to avoid the “entitlement” that surrounds that. I love Dr. Kehr’s advice on these issues and look forward to implementing them in our daily lives. I am also particularly grateful for the chapter on helping your child after an emotionally disturbing experience. My 8yo came home from sports practice just last week complaining of some boys calling him the “worst player on the team” and calling him other names. I know this is just the beginning, so having these examples to read through really gives me confidence that I can handle these situations and help navigate him through them. As an author, speaker, and consultant to business leaders, I am frequently flying in an airplane or waiting in an airport lounge reading business books. What a lovely surprise when I "broke the mold" and picked up this wonderful book. As someone who recently remarried, I particularly enjoyed the sessions on romantic relationships and emotional intimacy. And as a father with young adult children, the sessions addressing "Empty Nest" and "Letting Go" provided valuable insights. The stories of people in treatment helped me understand and accept that the problems we all face are universal, and that there is always hope, no matter how our circumstances can make us feel. I already treasure some of the lessons learned, and will recommend this book to colleagues and loved ones. Thank you, Dr. Kehr!

I bought this book to give to someone and decided to read it first. Didn't get far before deciding it didn't fit for my purposes. In general the book covers some helpful subjects, but I was turned off by an early quote of Ayn Rand in a chapter encouraging readers to "take responsibility" for their lives and not feel "entitled." This language probably works well for some, just not for me, as it feels judgmental and seems to dismiss the impact mental illness can have on people. I've given it 3 stars because overall it seems fine, but buyers should be aware of the slant the author takes.

the writing was for someone with little to no understanding of the wholistic process of self-care. It sounded condescending and limited. I have found better guidance and instruction from other materials. I have returned this book.

First time I've written an Amazon review. The books put a lot of pieces together for a thoughtful look. While easy to read, Dr. Kehr's work is thought provoking. Told through stories involving his life and the life of his patients, the books feels genuine, caring and supportive. Highly recommended.

A decent portion of this book applied to having children, raising children, etc. I found the beginning of it to be very helpful, and actually helped me come to terms with a HUGE realization (which is why I'm giving it 5 stars), but the rest of it was useless to me.

This is really really long and complex and as much as I want to get better, I wanted to start right away with steps, not just read for hours and still not have started on the therapy! Maybe worth the money if you have lots of free time to finish it, but if you are a busy student who doesn’t have much free time, I’d recommend seeing a psychiatrist. If your not insured try dr on demand because for $70 you can actually start to address the problem immediately
