This review applies to both this book and the necessary companion volume Campaigns https://www.amazon.com/GURPS-BASIC-SET-Campaigns-Universal/dp/1556347308GURPS is my favorite RPG system. As other reviewers state, the system can be extremely detailed, fine grained, and gritty. OR it can be streamlined for fast, cinematic, narrative play. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. GURPS Basic Set: Characters presents all you need for creating interesting characters, including simple systems for magic and psionics. The Campaigns volume presents detailed (but all pretty much optional) rules for combat and plenty of good advice for campaign building. GURPS is also very well supported as a system, with ample supplements for a wide variety of genres. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Great job, Steve Jackson Games!

I love GURPS. So much stuff. Rules for nearly any situation I could imagine and the tools to create my own when nothing else was applicable. Sounded perfect. And for the right GM it may be. For several years I've tried to make this the game that would replace D&D and similar D20 (and other single die) systems. Well, it did replace them. But I was left feeling like I'd forgotten something. I'd forgotten how to have fun. Don't misunderstand, GURPS is fun. Far more so than D&D could imagine. But I was buried under the weight of my own expectations as a GM. And running games for my college's RPG Club made the situation worse. I was trying to introduce new players to the game all while I was barely keeping it together.I've realized that the game I want to PLAY is GURPS, but it's not one I can GM effectively - at least, not to my own expectations (my players give me much positive feedback, so maybe I'm being silly). I'm going to try Fate Accelerated and see if that's a better fit as GM.Maybe I'll be able to _play_ GURPS someday. It's the system I wish I'd paid attention to 25 years ago. It's not for everyone and it takes a good GM to tune this engine - I'm just not that guy right now.If you like details and rules to handle most anything in any genre, this is your game - hands down.I'm trying simpler systems for when I GM, but I'm always hoping to find someone local that runs GURPS. If you're looking at GURPS for your main game, know that it's the most amazing (and potentially overwhelming) toolkit for tabletop gaming you could imagine. You've been warned.

I am incredibly excited to be learning the GURPS system. I know I'm getting into it close to a decade after the fourth edition toolkits were first published and two decades after GURPS' zenith in popularity, but for someone who likes to blend genres (medieval characters in a sci-fi setting, for instance, or cyberpunk/horror/espionage all blended into one) no other system seems to come close to addressing that need. My only concern is whether or not for edition wound up being as well supported as seems to have initially been promised: there is still no vehicle creation kit, no consolidated bestiary, and it looks like I'll be porting a lot of third edition material over to fourth edition rules myself … which may require picking up the third edition basic toolkits ouch … although the sheer wealth of such available material, third edition worldbooks etc., is impressive. I'm still getting my feet wet, but so far I have no regrets!

I started playing GURPS with my friends recently. As such I ordered my own set of the basic 4th Ed rules. I've only had them a few days, but am really happy with the quailty. This is a hardbound book with good quality and feel pages. I've thumbed through it presently and like the are and feel of the book. I'll try to post back in 2 months letting anyone know how it has held up for the near term. I'm expecting no issues.

This book details how to create a character for the GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) game system, but does not contain any rules on how to play the game itself. If you want the actual rules (minus the character creation part) you'll want to purchase the GURPS Basic Set Campaigns book, which this book references extensively.GURPS endeavors to give gamers the tools necessary to create literally ANY roleplaying experience imaginable. With only a few cartoonish exceptions, it feels as though Steve Jackson has succeeded with his game system.The GURPS system uses only three six-sided dice (d6's) for most of the rolls you will be making, and encourages you to make use only of the rules you feel comfortable in order to make your game as streamlined or intricate as desired.Character stats, rather than being randomized, are purchased with a point system, as are skills and attributes pertaining to your character. This actively replaces the leveling system familiar to most other RPG's, in that you don't have a level 15 Cleric, but rather a 1750 point character that has purchased traits that a cleric would have, with no penalty if he/she wanted to dabble in magery or barbarism as needed in the future.Attributes (advantages or disadvantages) range from the mundane (Honesty) to the fantastic (Unkillable) and many rely heavily on Game Master approval. When generating or upgrading a character, advantageous traits can be purchased for points and disadvantages will reward you extra points, so I imagine a lot of power gamers giving their characters a fear of the dark so that they can also be able to fly or something.Units in the game are given in real world terms, and so combat "rounds" actually last one second each, and moving distance is given in yards. The game is also set up so that most of the calculation is done during character creation, and so everything is spelled out on your character record ahead of time.All in all, it's a very well thought out gaming system. I can't wait to try making a Flatworld-themed campaign using it!

I'm going to go out on a limb and wager that there are thousands of other parents out there hoping to show their children that life cannot be fully lived when chained within the artificial halo of an electronic screen.As he discusses in this book, the relationship you build with your daughter will go with her for the rest of her life. She should experience the difficulties of this life with you by her side before she has to trek alone or with someone else. Now is when you prepare her.I felt challeng d on several different levels. The logistics and daily issues that go along with living in the wild, the scary endeavor that is raising a child in today's world and answering the call for significance all are themes in this book. I felt as if James were my friend by the turning of the last page. A flawed man, but one intent on being present with his daughter and showing her how to live life fully.You won't find the blinding highs and lows of Chris McCandless' story. But you will be different at the end of this book. Because it forces you to question whether or not you are living fully yourself. And whether you are passing a thirst for fullness on to your children. This is a journey worth taking.

I absolutely loved this book! I love reading outdoor survival books. This was one the best books not only because of what they did but the Dad taking his 15/16 year old daughter on three big outdoor survival trips in the middle of nowhere in Alaska was priceless! I loved his style and the subject matter I could hardly put the book down. You probably won`t see many survival books that a young female teenager is featured in the book and how she and her Dad`s relationship worked in this book. I hope this books sells well because it is a total classic read.

James Campbell tells the story of his making an indelible mark on his daughter over the course of three trips to Alaska in her fifteenth year.This book works as a father-daughter relationship book (somewhat) and as a glimpse of what living and travel above the Arctic Circle is like. The first two trips involve Campbell and daughter joining his cousin Heimo and his wife on their lonely homestead along the Coleen River. First, in summer, they help Heimo build a new cabin to escape the changing course of the river imperiling their home site. Father and Daughter give into wanderlust on returning to their home in Wisconsin and travel again to spend some time with Heimo in winter. There, they meet extreme cold as they accompany Heimo and his wife on his hunting and trapping expeditions (Heimo subsists on animal furs caught and sold).All this in preparation for the ultimate father daughter trek, a summer hike to their put in on the Hula-hula River and canoe trip down the river to the Arctic Ocean. While experienced in handling a canoe in the lower 48, they wisely teamed up with two experienced Alaskan adventurers. The last part of the book chronicles their challenging hike and rapid filled canoe trip.The author faces both aging and the moods of a teenaged girl in his frequent inner dialogues in the book. No revelations here, but his experience and wanderings about his own bodily changes and the challenges of interacting with a daughter on the brink of woman-hood are interesting as many readers no doubt have or will experience the same.This is a pretty good book. The picture of life and travel in the harsh Alaska outdoors is interesting and the best part of the book. The relationship forms the backdrop and provides the reason for the setting.

Very good book. As a father who has taken my daughters to Alaska, this book definitely struck a chord with me. I just wish I had his courage to spend a month in the bush with them. This book is very easy and fun to read. As soon as I finished I ordered another copy for my daughters to read. If more fathers were like James Campbell the world would be a much better place.

I read this as an immediate sequel to Heimo North, the Final Frontiersman. I was not expecting as good a read as it turned out. It was going to be a bog much different. Having done some flat and whitewater canoeing myself urged me to read it. Besides, I like the author's style. I found I could appreciate the river challenges and difficulties. The author did a great job detailing the scenery, the danger, challenges and triumph of the trip. It was exciting and he made me feel I was right along with them. The trials and tribulations of guiding a daughter on such a challenging trip as she literally grew up on the trip were heartwarming and I could relate to the ups and downs of dealing with a teenager. Worthwhile story and I highly recommend. I have camped, canoed, hiked and hunted much in my lifetime, but never having been to Alaska almost made me feel like I had been there and surely regret that I never have. Descriptions of the land, scenery and brutal weather are very real. Although much more intense because of the expedition, most parents can relate to the teen-parent communication difficulties and there is something for everyone to learn.

My husband and I are taking our 12 and 14 year old grandchildren to Alaska for 2 weeks this summer. While we won't be roughing it in the wilderness like Aiden and her dad, this true story gave me an inside look at what it would be like to try to survive in the Arctic wild. I was very impressed at the challenges they met and how they met them together. I don't think most fathers and daughters could do this. Their lives depended on each other and how they handled themselves. I think the author was very honest in what he wrote, not all of it flattering to either himself or his daughter. But, he was able to convey the incredible depth of trust and love the the two if them were able to acquire during this incredible, often life-threatening journey. I highly recommend this book for both adults and young people who are lovers of raw adventure and personal growth that knows no boundries.

What a solid resource!I am not yet advanced enough in my lace-making skills to be able to use this for anything other than swatching... but there are so many "fills" that would be ideal if one were creating a new or larger design! The diagrams and prickings are clear, and the fills range from very basic to elaborate.Very recommended for intermediate through advanced bobbin lacemakers!

Who Is Sonia Sotomayor?     New York City: May 25, 2009     It was a warm spring day—the kind of day to be outside. But Sonia Sotomayor was in her office, sitting beside her phone. She was waiting for the most important call of her life. A call from the White House! She would learn whether President Barack Obama wanted her to be a judge on the Supreme Court.   Sonia was already a judge. Her courtroom was in downtown New York City. But being one of the nine judges on the Supreme Court would be very different.   The Supreme Court is the most important court in the country—it decides whether laws in the United States are fair or not. Its decisions are final.   All day the phone in her office rang again and again. Each time Sonia picked it up, it was her family calling. They wanted to know what was happening. If she got the job, she would be only the third woman to sit on the Supreme Court—and the very first Hispanic person. Her family would be invited to go to the White House with her the next day. Some family members were coming from Puerto Rico!   Finally, at seven o’clock that evening, Sonia couldn’t stand waiting any longer. She picked up the phone and called the White House herself. She spoke to an aide to the president. What should she do? If she was picked, she had to get to Washington by the next morning.   The aide told Sonia to go home and pack—and wait for a call.   Then, a little after 8:00 p.m., the call came, the one she so hoped for. It was the president. He told her he would name her to be the next associate justice on the Supreme Court!   Sonia choked up and started to cry. “Thank you, Mr. President,” she said.   Then he asked her to promise two things. He wanted her to stay the same person that she was—and to always stay connected to the world she had come from.   For Sonia Sotomayor—a girl who had grown up poor and proud of her Puerto Rican heritage—that was a promise she was very happy to make.     Chapter 1: Born in the Bronx     Sonia Maria Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954. Her parents, Juan and Celina, brought her home. They lived in a poor area of the Bronx, which is part of New York City. Like many of their neighbors, Juan and Celina had come to the United States from Puerto Rico. They had each left Puerto Rico in 1944, hoping for a better life. In the Bronx, they met and married. They moved into the building where Juan’s mother lived.    The Sotomayors worked hard to make a life in their new country. Celina worked at a hospital while she studied to become a nurse. Juan worked in a factory. Celina learned some English, but the family spoke only Spanish at home.   When Sonia was three years old, her brother, Juan, was born. The family called him Junior. With the family growing, her parents decided to move to a bigger, nicer apartment in the Bronx.   Sonia liked her new home but missed living near her grandmother Mercedes. Years later, Sonia wrote a book about her life. She called it My Beloved World, and it was published in 2013. In the book, she wrote about her grandmother—how full of life she was. She gave parties for the family almost every Saturday night. Everyone danced, played dominoes, and sang. Mercedes read poetry about Puerto Rico and cooked large meals. The apartment would fill with the smell of Puerto Rican food like chicken cooked with onions and garlic. Even as a child, Sonia liked pig’s feet and pig’s ears!   When Sonia was very young, Mercedes began taking her to Puerto Rico for vacations. Sonia loved those trips. She never forgot the clear blue water of the ocean and the white sandy beaches of Puerto Rico.   Sonia’s father was a sweet man. He took Sonia on picnics, to the beach, and to Yankees games. But he drank too much. Her parents fought a lot because of this.   When Sonia’s father lost his job, Celina worked nights and weekends to support the family. She also worked to pay for Sonia and Junior to go to a Catholic school. Celina thought education was the most important thing in the world.   But Sonia didn’t like her school. It was called Blessed Sacrament. The nuns were very strict. They slapped kids who didn’t behave.   Sonia had other troubles as well. When she was almost eight years old, she fainted in church. And this was not the first sign of a problem. Sonia often had no energy. She was thirsty all the time. She was losing weight. Celina took Sonia to the doctor right away.   The doctor sent Sonia to Prospect Hospital in the Bronx for some tests. Celina worked at Prospect Hospital, so Sonia wasn’t afraid at first. But when the tests were done, the doctor had bad news. Sonia had type I diabetes. Sonia had never seen her mother cry until that moment.   Sonia was scared. She had to stay in the hospital for a week. When she got home from the hospital, Sonia felt better. But there was another problem. As Sonia explained in her book, her parents were nervous about giving her insulin shots. Celina was a nurse, but she hated the idea of hurting Sonia. Her parents started fighting about it.   Sonia was always a girl who wanted to solve problems herself. So she climbed up on a chair near the stove to boil water for sterilizing the needle. (Sterilizing means getting rid of germs.)   At first her mother was worried. Should she really let a young girl use the stove and handle a needle? Nearly all parents would say absolutely not. But Celina decided to trust her child. From that day on, Sonia gave herself shots of insulin every day.   Now that her disease was under control, she had more energy.   But the very next year, her world changed again. Her father died suddenly of a heart attack. He was only forty-two years old.   Sonia and Junior were very sad, but their mother seemed overcome by grief. Years later, Sonia wrote that her mother wouldn’t come out of her room at night. How was a nine-year-old girl supposed to have a happy childhood with so much misery around her?

All of the books in this series are fabulous! I am a 5th grade reading teacher and I have about 100 of the books in this series. Kids at this age don't typically like reading biographies. These are perfect! They have all the important information about the person, landmark, event. And, we always love looking at the adorable, sometimes funny cover photos!

I bought this book for a former student. It was an excellent source for her book report, but unfortunately, the reading level was a bit high for my little third grader. It provided more detail than the other one I purchased.

I like this series for my kids but they need more people of color in their series.

Excellent content, quality and price point. We would highly recommend!
