Wide Awake: A Buddhist Guide for Teens, by Diana Winston

From Publishers Weekly

One of the recent trends in Buddhist publishing has been a subtle generation shift: we are now seeing second-generation Buddhists' memoirs as well as introductory books for teenagers and young adults. Into this latter category falls Diana Winston's Wide Awake: A Buddhist Guide for Teens, a well-written and basic primer for Gen-Ys who are asking Big Questions. Introducing concepts such as meditation, enlightenment, metta (lovingkindness), karma, the four noble truths and the eight worldly conditions, Winston writes accessibly but doesn't try overly hard to sound cool or relevant. Teens will appreciate the way she gives the dharma to them straight, while many adults will also benefit from this lucid manual. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-10. Switching between anecdotes of her own journey in Buddhism and advice on how teens can apply the Buddha's teachings to their lives, Winston offers a personal and thoughtful introduction to Buddhist thought and practice. The fundamental tenets of Buddhism are introduced through the lens of adolescence: finding karma at a high-school basketball game or promising that metta (loving-kindness) can free teens from anger toward siblings and parents (a miracle, indeed). Winston frequently quotes from teens she has met in her work at a Buddhist center in California, showing what they have learned from Buddhism on such subjects as skipping school. The writing doesn't rely on slang that will go out of style, but Winston's retellings of Buddhist sutras and stories are delightfully colloquial ("I want to understand life," the Buddha tells his father at one point. "I can't stay cooped up in this castle"), and her celebration of inquisitiveness and doubt will appeal to readers. Give this, along with Franz Metcalf's Buddha in Your Backpack (2002), to spiritual seekers intrigued by Buddhism. John GreenCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I Got this book at the library about 2 years ago and I couldn't stop thinking about it and eventually decided I wanted it to be a part of my library. I love this book so much. The only thing I would change is the title because I don't believe this is just for teens. In fact, I let my 14 year old sister read it and she read the first chapter and didn't like it. I think she's too young for it. I first read this when I was like 20 and I loved it. I also think it's more about spirituality than it is a guide to Buddhism. This book put so many things into perspective for me and I go back to it constantly. This is probably one of my favorite books that I've ever read and I recommend you read it with an open mind and without any expectations. There are great life lessons in this book that I have incorporated into my lifestyle. This book educated me and it also saved me

So far as I know, all available Christian guides for teens are written from a fundamentalist perspective. So, until someone of us writes one from a Christian Resurgence perspective I suggest this book as a useful spirit guide for Christian teens. The advantage of the Christian Resurgence perspective is its openness to learn from spirit resources of all traditions. Winston's experience as a Buddhist nun (for a year in Burma), in teaching meditation to young people for ten years in the U.S. and India (she inserts many comments from her students), and in founding and directing the Buddhist Alliance for Social Engagement, as well as her relative youth (under 40), enables her to understand teens as well as speak with the wisdom of experience. The book is a basic primer of Buddhism, including instructions for meditation. I particularly appreciated her explanation of the difference between discernment and judgment, the section on choosing friends wisely, and the chapters on finding right livelihood. She also covers the hot topics of dealing with emotions, sex, and intoxicants.

I bought this for my son. He didn't read it. I did read it and it is a great starter book. If you have basic questions on buddha, this is a great place to start.

My girlfriends son was having a lot of anxiety and was acting out. I forced him to read a chapter with us together as a family and to my surprise it really reached him. Afterwards he thanked me for making him read it. It was the first real breakthrough we had with him.

I bought this book for my eleven year old daughter over the summer. In two weeks she read it and it has already begun to transform her mind and thinking in an incredibly positive way. I’d recommend for every parent who would like their child to be self-aware and mindful.

As an adult beginning a study of Buddhism, I felt this book very approachable. Though it's written for teens, it still is very useful for older people seeking awakening.

My fourteen years old child really enjoy this book. He though it is boring but once he starts to read, he really enjoy it since it is written for teenagers.

My 13 year old son absolutely loves this book. Checked it out 3 times from the library before purchasing. Highly recommend.

For all of you snowflakes, wuzzies, pc cowards, crybabies, justice warrior idiots and all of the rest. You may not want to read this without a "trigger warning" or whatever you call it. This book would never be allowed on any college campus because it's not pc and doesn't coincide with the profs opinions. No profs, all people aren't exactly the same. Not everybody has the exact same mindset. Not everybody is a wonderful, lovely, harmless person who can't dare to hear a word that they don't agree with. How about the person who just would like to kill you for the fun of it? Ever thought of that? There are millions on the street. That's right. Not thousands, millions. Varg cuts through the bs most martial arts and firearm instructor training instructors teach. That's the notion that if I just have my gun "I'll be OK." Or, if I get this black belt, I can take on any of these thugs on the street and make quick work of them. Ha. You'd better rethink. They'll hand you something and it won't be your elbow. I relate to the crappy neighborhood he grew up in. Mine was full of thugs, dirtbags, outlaw motorcycle gangs, felons, drug traffickers, murderers, robbers and even some serial killers thrown in for good measure. You'd better have more than a AMEX card when you left home. That's all I've known since I was old enough to walk. I grew up in one of the largest cities in the US. I was shipped into the hood as a white kid in the late 60's. It was a wonderful experience (sarcasm for gosh sakes). Every day was a potential for life and death fighting with multiple opponents. I was kicked out of every school I went to. Why? Because I was attacked by armed thugs and defended myself and destroyed their posteriors so the school staff said it was my fault. Hmmm. I thought there was something illegal about threatening to kill somebody with a weapon if they didn't give you their money. I digress. I can say I have a good clue as to what the hell he's talking about. Been around much of it. As a former cop in one of the biggest cities of America, I went on to be federal agent for a major federal LE agency and conducted extensive covert operations in the US and was involved in many cases involving OC, firearms trafficking, narcotics trafficking, murder for hire, murders, bombings, serial bombings, arsons, hostage situations, etc. I've also done extensive work with POTUS/VPOTUS protection details with the USSS as part of my assignments. I do know what the hell I'm talking about. I make no apologies. I had 50,000 to 60,000 hours on the streets as a cop and agent. Not parking my butt behind a desk. That doesn't count all of the years growing up. Varg is on the money. I couldn't care less if you agree or not. If you take a bs ccw class and think you're ready to defend yourself on the street you're insane and that's nicest thing I can say. Get a WHOLE bunch of advanced training after that class. Thinking you're ready for a major, lowlight fight to the death with multiple opponents is insanity. Either get better or have lots of health and life insurance paid in advance. Yes, I've been in multiple shoot outs and sniper attacks. Not fun. Result. I'm still here running my mouth. That should tell you something. I still train with the best firearms instructors in the country and am currently finding a new KM school. I completed SWAT team school three years ago at Ft. McClelland, AL after being retired for several years. I'm in my 60's now. Keep training. Never stop. Mindset is the FIRST step in survival. If you actually learn what he's trying to tell you, you'll be light years ahead of 99% of other civilians. I don't tell most people these things because they think you're insane. They think "Oh, that guys just so negative" or "Oh, he's just making that stuff up. How ridiculous. That many people who would kill me? No way. The GOVT would protect me and not let that happen". Buy the danged book. Once you actually understand the message, your on your way to the transformation that MUST occur before you can ever be really safe and really learn what "mindset" is. I dare Amazon to publish this without editing it.

This book is top shelf. I was very surprised how much I like what this man has to say. I am a recently retired cop trying to get my head around concealed carry without a badge. This may be the best book I've read on the principles of violence. Think of Col. Grossman or de Becker 's works then distill and filter the bs and add a Carolina reaper for flavor. Thank you for passing on your hard won wisdom . I would recommend this book to anyone with a ccw, in fact it should be required reading in the police academy.

This is not a typical "self-defense" or "martial arts book. It is much more, because it teaches the mental aspect of real fighting. No amount of work in the dojo or gym can develop the mental attitude required to prevail in real world violent confrontations. Read this book, practice to develop the skills, and you will see what you must do.

This book is wisdom. Every paragraph is full of useful and practical knowledge that you can put to use right now in the real world. The book is the most well written book I have read and clearly demonstrates that the author KNOWS what he is talking about. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who carries or plans to carry any weapon or to anyone who has any skills or ability to harm anyone else in self defense or otherwise. This is inside knowledge about violence. The author clearly understands the violent criminal mindset so well and he writes in a way that anyone reading the book will have a very well informed understanding into that mindset. I have read many books in this category and nothing comes close to even a quarter of the knowledge contained in this book.I can't recommend the book enough. You wont regret reading it.

If you conceal carry to defend the life of yourself and loved ones this is a must read. This book really opens your eyes to what violence truly is and what you will be facing if that day ever comes (which hopefully you will not have to face that). The book gives great insight into criminal violence but is described in a way that is easy to understand. VOM covers things that most people or instructors don't tell you such as dealing with the judicial system and the aftermath you face from an extreme violence encounter . This book makes you realize how much of a fight is mental and how much is actually physical. I have a new outlook on training, a good instructor, and how to go about my daily life. Great book!

Life is a funny but blessed opportunity to find out what and defend what you care about. Wolves, predators, sheep, and sheepdogs. Every responsible self-defender should read this book, among others. Studying for your life is not a bad choice, combined with practice. Raised by dogs, I mean this in the most loving way, I grew up into a wolf. Not a predator but a hunter. Through self-reflection and study, to include this book, among many others, I have found peace of mind. I strongly recommend that you read this work. I agreed with 99% of what the author says. The last chapters were like he was writing about my personal experiences, philosophies, and desires to think, train, and live.

I figured this book was another like many before it that preached self-defense, applications of and how to prepare for those ugly situations. But this book was so much more. I can definitely relate to some of the contents, the rest of it was a real eye opener into the mind of a wolf. I should have bought the hard copy in the beginning, now I have to buy it to have it to read again in the future.

The Confession: A Novel, by John Grisham

From Publishers Weekly

Grisham's recent slump continues with another subpar effort whose plot and characters, none of whom are painted in shades of gray, aren't able to support an earnest protest against the death penalty. In 2007, almost on the eve of the execution of Donté Drumm, an African-American college football star, for the 1998 murder of a white cheerleader whose body was never found, Travis Boyette, a creepy multiple sex offender, confesses that he's guilty of the crime to Kansas minister Keith Schroeder. With Drumm's legal options dwindling fast and with the threat of civil unrest in his Texas hometown if the execution proceeds, Schroeder battles to convince Boyette to go public with the truth--and to persuade the condemned man's attorney that Boyette's story needs to be taken seriously. While the action progresses with a certain grim realism, Schroeder's superficial responses to the issues raised undercut the impact. As with The Appeal, the author's passionate views on serious flaws in the justice system don't translate well into fiction. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Quick John Grisham read--- one of three novels he has written that have sports as a setting (as far as I know). Story of a fallen NFL football player who finds himself playing in a lower-level Italian American-style football league held interest. Liked watching the main character grow as a person and realize sports is secondary to relationships. My mother was Sicilian--- so I enjoyed the Italy travelogue and cultural references. Definitely a light read--- his other two sports-related books (Calico Joe | baseball and Bleachers | Football both have a more serious theme). I recommend Playing for Pizze to football fans--- but others should look for another John Grisham book (he has many). I enjoyed both Cocalico Joe and Bleachers--- would recommend you read them. Which one? Go by the sport you prefer. Not a sport fan? I'd go with Cocalico Joe.

A blatant political attack on Capital punishment from an emotional rather than rational view point.Drags the reader through multiple, lengthy, repetitive word drizzles [I was going to stay word storm, but too boring too qualify] of unnecessary verbiage. His treatment of themother of the victim was shameful at best. Should have researched the structure of the LCMS. Thechurch body has neither a bishop or nor a very hierarchical structure.I skipped through huge parts of this book - it could perhaps have been an acceptable short story or novella.I expected more from John Grisham.

Timely, terrifying, realistic and gripping, "The Confession" takes the reader through the often questionable processes of the criminal and judicial systems, aptly demonstrating that "criminal justice" is often a misnomer and an oxymoron. Grisham deftly weaves current events and recognizable characters into this tale of process and people sacrificed on the altar of expediency, ambition, politics, and personal gain. Literally and figuratively, "ripped from the headlines," the story provides thought-provoking questions to those who struggle with issues of good and evil, retribution and understanding, and the ethics of state-sanctioned murder. A good read, I recommend this book.

I have read most of Grisham's books. This was merely a treatise on capital punishment. Grisham is clearly opposed to it,which is neither here nor there. I found myself flipping unread pages to get to the storyline. I was extremely disappointed to have to MAKE myself finish this book.

It was a typical Grisham page-turner, so I enjoyed it in that sense. However, it was definitely written with a political agenda in mind. I don't want to give away the book, but the agenda definitely drove the entire story, and the ending was a bit anti-climatic because of it. Since it was fiction, I would have written the ending to be a little bit more sensational, but that wouldn't have served the agenda well.In summary, the agenda was not so distracting that it wasn't a good book, but it was noticeable enough that I could tell that he started with wanting to make a point and built the story around it.

The Confession is the latest legal thriller from accomplished author John Grisham. I've read many of Grisham's books and have enjoyed almost all of them. In this book I found that in some ways I was more engrossed and captivated by the story than any other Grisham book I've read, and at the same time, very much turned off by Grisham's blatant political agenda in the book. The basic premise of the book is that a white girl in a small Texas town goes missing. After no evidence is found, the police receive a `tip' that it was a young black classmate of the girl. During the interrogation the detectives manage to force a confession out of the boy, who is subsequently convicted and sentenced to the death penalty.Meanwhile, the real killer is free. Days before the scheduled execution, the real killer begins to come forward with his own confession... The bulk of the book takes place during these tense last hours. From this standpoint, I was enthralled by the tension and the storyline (I don't want to give away anymore details, as it may ruin some of the tension for potential readers of the book). However, it is clear that Grisham is trying to blast the ethics of capital punishment... along the way, he uses the most common arguments put forth by liberals: the fallibility of the criminal justice system, "excessive" governmental power, the insufficiency of revenge as a motive, and most predominantly in the book - the possibility of executing an innocent person.Various Christians and pastors are predominant throughout the book - and as a pastor myself, I was intrigued to see how their views were represented. Sadly, Grisham does a very poor job on this crucial element of his book.In this entry, I do not have the time or space to give a more balanced, thoughtful, and in-depth view of this sensitive issue. However, for anyone interested, I would highly recommend J. Daryl Charles article "The Ethics of Capital Punishment" found here: […]
