This book is a powerful story of a visionary leader of a people whose way of life was doomed as the story begins. Crazy Horse had a role thrust upon him, a role he seems not to have chosen himself although he accepted it, which led him through tragedy and into a dark future for his people. The book tells a story of the Lakota and other Indians that shows their divisions and betrayals as partly the cause of their own fate. It tells a story of the veniality of the white men who sought to take the way of life from the Indian as they took his land, white men who were equally divided in their loyalties and motives. It tells the story of a spiritual way of life manifest in certain figures such as Crazy Horse and his father, but a spiritual way that all too often was not fully internalized even by other Indians. That spiritual tragedy might be a lesson still to all too many Christians and others who continue to fail to internalize the values and vision of their own civilization.This book is a jewel of a story, told in a way that brings alive the Indian perception, modes of speech, and ways that could not be done equally well as a mere modern history. One feels oneself, in reading, inside the Indian encampments and lodges. Mari Sandoz did a masterful job of conveying this in the way she uses language, and one can sense her commitment to communicating something that could not be experienced otherwise from the outside, as most history attempts.At the same time the writing often is very difficult to follow. A sentence may have to be read over twice and it still may be unclear what it is trying to say. The detail is immense and commendable, but events and persons and objects of the Lakota world begin to overwhelm the reader, and without a glossary or a dramatis personnae the reader can get lost in the detail. There are notes that detail some of her sources at the end, but these are inadequate to fill in the questionable areas of the story. And one feels somewhat deprived at the end of the tragedy, as Crazy Horse dies, not to have some kind of epilogue telling the fate of his people, a people for whom he gave his life.We are fortunate that this (1942) volume has been preserved, and it is well worth a careful, sensitive reading. At the time of its writing and indeed far beyond that in time the way of the Indian was shrouded in misunderstanding and prejudice, and it is amazing that this book could have been written as sensitively as it was. It continues to exemplify the halting attempts we humans make to understand one another, and it continues to provide a valuable window into the Lakota culture which survives but as endangered.

Little is known about Crazy Horse in comparison to other legendary chiefs, warriors and heroes due to the quiet-spoken and solitude-seeking nature he possessed. Indeed, Crazy Horse was considered "strange" due to standing true to his ideals and who he really was, instead of the conventional ways of others no matter how traditional. Born of lighter hair and skin, young Curly stood out as different from the beginning of his days. Most humble and purely strong and good-hearted, Crazy Horse grew to be the truest and most brilliant leader of the Lakotas. Self-sacrificing even to the bitter end, Crazy Horse earned his place of honor as a hero to be respected.Combining interview information of Eleanor Hinman with survivors who knew Crazy Horse, with Mari Sandoz's meticulous research, gives "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of The Oglalas" clout in accuracy of detail and fact in the day and time of Crazy Horse. I very highly recommend this book.

The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.

Bought this for my brother in law and he's a HUGE marvel fan. He was so excited to get the book and when he received it, it was bigger than expected. He finished the entire thing in one day and immediately asked if we could purchase the next copy. Deff recommend this. Great read and awesome pictures. thank you!

 Not happy. Package came and the comic was bent and beat up on the cover and spine. Black marks across the top. Water warped in a couple of places. Very unhappy with this purchase. Would not recommend.

Awesome! I read it in one night (about 4-6 hours) and it was just amazing! It is also my first comic book purchase, but this is definitively worth it especially if you like The Walking Dead. The plot was well done, I had no questions about it and no feeling of regret! Well done Mark Miller!

I thought it would contain the Army of Darkness Crossover because its very important to the beginning of the story but I was wrong.Still what is there is a good read.

Excellent Resource

I found BizTalk 2013 EDI for Health Care to be an excellent resource to help explain how BizTalk could benefit our organization, using a real-world process as an example. The writing style and content was very business-user friendly, not bloated with technical jargon. It is not a BizTalk "cookbook", but fit my needs perfectly.

The author, Mark Beckner has an excellent way of exploring real world situations. Adapting his examples to my tasks has proven to be extremely helpful. The value received from this book is worth the price. I would recommend any of Mark's books.

See my other review for the supply chain management. It's a very small book and I did not know that before I had my employer buy it

This is a gem of a book! Wonderful recipes with stunning presentation ideas. The nougat recipe in here is fantastic! I subbed pistachios for the almonds and they were adored! The nougat has a really good set and they weren't at all finicky to make--I've added them to my Christmas baking list for this year! The Chile and Garlic Mustard recipe is good as well. I feel like it can be really hard to find scratch-made mustard recipes, but this book has three! The only other recipe I've made from this book so far, is the Poppy and Sesame Seed Crackers, and they were incredible! They were light and crumbly with great flavor and a homemade look that was positively charming.There are some real show-stopping ideas in here, including a vanilla infused vodka with glittering flecks of gold leaf, which I know will leave my vodka loving friends speechless this Christmas.This book has gift ideas for the whole year and, though the recipes do lean heavier toward the sweet side, there is a smaller section devoted to savory gifts. For cooks who love to give gifts of food, this is a must-have!

A very interesting story of the British battlecruisers constructed between 1906 and 1920. The book contains much information on life aboard the ships and how they were deployed, mostly during World War I. There is an adequate summary of the technical aspects and historical development of the designs, accompanied by a few line drawings, but there are now much more thorough books available on these aspects of the ships (this book was originally published in 1983).Unfortunately, the book is marred by several minor but irritating technical errors:Page 7: it is stated that the German armored cruiser Blucher carried eight 210 mm guns as main armament. This is incorrect: the main armament was twelve 210 mm guns in six twin turrets. The turrets were arranged hexagonally on the hull such that a broadside was eight guns.Page 10: it is stated that the main armament of the German battlecruiser Von der Tann was ten 11-inch guns. This is also incorrect: the main armament was eight 11-inch guns. The succeeding three ships, the Moltke, Goeben, and Seydlitz, were armed with ten 11-inch guns.Page 147: it is stated that “… the Admiralty had become aware that Germany was planning a series of battlecruisers … mounting eight 15-inch guns, later identified as Mackensen, Graf Spee, Eitel Friedrich, and Furst Bismarck.” This is not quite correct. British intelligence may have thought that these four ships were to mount 15-inch guns, but in fact they were to be armed with 350 mm (13.78-inch) guns. A subsequent group of three more ships were to be armed with 15-inch guns, but construction was never even started.Page 149: while discussing the three 18-inch guns constructed for the light battlecruiser Furious, the author states (Note 2) that “These guns were later taken to Singapore. In 1946 the author stumbled on them, half buried, overgrown with grass, and with their muzzles fractured, on the island of Blakang Mati, just off Singapore where they probably still are.” This is impossible. I cite the book “The Big Guns” by Peter Hodges (1981), page 83: “There is a popular misconception that the three 18-inch guns were sent to Singapore but, although this may indeed have been mooted at some time, they did not, in fact, leave Great Britain.” Hodges then goes on to describe exactly what happened to each of the three guns. Ultimately, two of the guns were sold for scrap in 1933 and the third was sold for scrap in 1947. Bassett may have seen one or more of the 15-inch guns at Singapore, of which five were installed, but it would not have been at Blakang Mati as all five of them were installed on the Singapore main island. According to the book “The Fatal Fortress” by Clements (2016), Pages 116 and 167, the three guns installed on Blakang Mati were 9.2-inch.These errors should not have occurred with even a minimal effort at investigation of sources on the ships of the Imperial German Navy and Royal Navy armaments.Page 88: it is stated that the initial bombardments of the outer forts at the Dardanelles began on March 19, 1915 with additional bombardments on March 25. The author is off by a month: the initial bombardments began in February, not March.For those of you who really thrive on battlecruiser histories (as I do!), I heartily recommend the following more up-to-date books, especially regarding technical aspects of their designs: “Battlecruisers” by John Roberts (1997); “British and German Battlecruisers: Their Development and Operations” by Cosentino and Stanglini (2016); “German Battlecruisers of World War I” by Gary Staff (2014): “Clydebank Battlecruisers: Forgotten Photographs from John Brown’s Shipyard” by Ian Johnston (2011).

I've read many books on naval matters as part of my university studies leading to a BA in History, and served in the USN during the final years of our involvement in Vietnam, so I am always on the lookout for detailed, well documented facts, the ability to assemble and relate them in an engaging manner, and am especially appreciative of histories that tell both the perspective of the commanders and the men who serve under them. Bassett does an excellent job in satisfying all three criteria, in a way sensitive but not smarmy, and minute but always mindful of his topic and its limits. His frequent reflections on the effects of the incidents he relates are both wise and sensitively told; his compassion and understanding come through as genuine and are never gratuitous or maudlin, as is too often the case in more recent writings. Strange, almost, to find these qualities in a book focused on a rather narrow subject - which is no criticism, just a recognition of the book's scope, which Bassett several times recognizes as well. Indeed, there were times that I found his sentiments, which never obscure or overpower his writing, giving me a few minutes pause while I considered not just them but the quality of their expression before going on. This is a book that just doesn't make you stop and think; it leads you to stop and feel. Highest recommendation, and not just for history buffs: this book is a model of good writing that will improve any writer's style. Highest recommendation and I'm looking forward to reading Bassett's other works.

Very well written book. Not only includes lots of good design, technical info but really really well written operational histories and battles.To be honest, one of the best warship books I have read! I highly recommend.The writing quality is excellent, battle stories gripping, and a really good dose of humour/commentary which makes it really enjoyable reading.Great stuff!

Bassett's book is a very thorough history of the battle-cruiser type. His writing is excellent enough for me to try some of his naval fiction. I especially liked his technical detail, battle descriptions, and opinions on how the ship type was used, or misused, in battle. If you are a reader of naval history, this book should be in your library.

The author does a good job of explaining what a battle cruiser is and is not, as well as how they were deployed in WW I and II. Included are many first person accounts of battles and incidents including the cheese and sinking of the Bismarck.

Exciting, entertaining and informative. The stories of sinking the Bismarck & loss of the Hood & sinking of Repulse & prince of Wales have been told elsewhere not not before has the story of the development and times of the battle cruises been written. Here Thais done well.

It would have been better if it looked at battlecruisers beyond those of Great Britain but otherwise a great read & hard to put down
