I loved this book.

REALLY GREAT READ! Very interesting book for teachers and non-teachers alike. Enlightening and really makes you think about your practices. I recommend for any person to read this!

This book provides real accounts of an urban classroom. The curriculum and instruction insight is incredible. Definitely a must read.

It was an easy read and useful for my Urban Ed class assignment.

We are reading this book as our book club selection. The project Brian created is incredible. We know that most schools would not tolerate his break from regular curriculum. We also know that his kids learned more than they ever would have by following prescribed curriculum. I was a unique situation with someone who could imagine something better. I hope we hear from his kids as writers and researchers down the road.

This was a required textbook for a grad class I took. It is very inspirational about how teachers can change the way we look at curriculum. Gives some good suggestions if you're trying to bring in problem-based learning or student-centered curriculum.

I haven't read the book yet because it's for a class I'm taking over the summer. It came super fast and was in great condition. I've had a few teachers recommend it.

This book is great for beginning teachers or teachers that have been in the field for years. It will inspire anyone to want to teach in a better way.

At first glance, I have to say that this book is definitely a step in the right direction, but I wouldn’t call this a complete guide. In the areas of Daz Studio that Mr. Ciccone does cover, he does a good job of going over the material. However, Chapters 10 and 11 are devoted entirely to the Reality Plugin(Not a part of Daz studio, but a plugin that you can purchase –the key point being it’s not Daz Studio.) and Modo(A 3D modeling /animation package in its own right –also not a part of Daz Studio.) That’s sixty six pages out of 316 pages total of text that’s devoted to other programs and not Daz Studio. While in the meantime, there were parts of the program that were not covered at all, like D-Formers and ERC –which are key elements of working within Daz Studio if you’re ever going to go beyond simply posing and hitting the render button. The only other negative thing I observed that he works in the Apple operating environment and was very good at showing the Apple commands and working out what to do on an Apple computer. However, if you don’t own a Mac, that makes all of that effort pretty much useless.With that being said –I don’t look at this as a negative review. There is a lot of useful information contained in this book. If you’re brand new to Daz Studio, reading this book will give you a lot more knowledge than you had when you started. I like the fact that Mr. Ciccone took the time to explain Specular, Diffuse and other material types. A lot of books don’t cover that in a lot of detail –they just expect everyone to know it. I liked the fact that he also takes you to the Major sites for finding Daz Studio content like Runtime DNA, Renderosity and Sharecg. There are some great pointers for workflow that would have helped me out a lot in the beginning if I’d known that to begin with. He discusses setting up cameras and gives a little bit of insight into lighting and using cameras vs. the perspective view to setup your renders, and why it’s important. He discusses the genesis platform in detail, including a bit on using the dials to create a morph of the genesis character, which I think was long overdue. Beyond that, he uses an example that is not based on the much overused –Firey Genesis (I can’t tell you how much I hate that scene. People use it to death when they talk about teaching Daz Studio…).I’m still going over the book in detail, but a couple of final thoughts come to mind. The pictures need to be in color. You can only illustrate so much about the application with grey scale, and it makes it impossible to see the accents he’s trying to point out on certain parts of Daz Studio because the lines are so fine. In order for me to call it a complete guide –there would have needed to be a chapter devoted to 3delight render –which is the native render of Daz Studio. This book is a good start, but there are several omissions of key components that prevent me from personally calling it a "Complete Guide". It would have been far better to name this volume “The Beginner’s Guide to Daz Studio.”

In what folder would you put the poser content for your DAZ Studio? The DAZ content? If you don't know, you shouldn't but you will be asked as you install the program for the first time. The Developers at DAZ not only ignore, but seem openly hostile to the basic programming concept of the Naïve User; simply put never expect your user to know something they have no reason to know.Which is why this book is invaluable, Paolo does a wonderful job of guiding the Naïve user through getting the most out of this often user hostile program; For Naïve users, the use of the Rotation tool is often much easier than the use of the "Universal Tool" with its inverse kinematics; which can guide the model into a more natural pose, or make it look like the mangled final panel of a Beatle Baily cartoon; but the Universal tool is the programs default tool; again would you expect the lighting of the initial loading environment to be inadequate for rendering; I doubt it; but again the Dev's cannot resist the opportunity to set the user up for failure.I could have saved a good many man hours futilely searching for Genesis content on the web if I had read his discussion of why it is much better to search for Victoria 4 content first. Paolo also recommends some good free sources for content; for while DAZ Studio is free, the initial content provided is purposefully nerfed; the flesh tones provided are awful, the only hair available is way to short, and the wardrobe provided is very limited; and the user could soon find themselves paying hundreds of dollars on content if they are unaware of the free resources on the web; this book will more than pay for itself right just for resources presented in the content chapter alone; which will guide you to quickly turn Genesis into a more useful visually acceptable model.As a traditional Artist my major interest is in using the Genesis/Victoria figures that come with DAZ as Virtual artist models; and IMHO for that purpose the DAZ figures and environment are the best of a bad lot; Anyone who has tried to Draw with a traditional artists model can appreciate the idea behind the original poser program; a Virtual model can hold any pose indefinitely, and be juxtaposed with any number of other models; can be viewed from any angle and any virtual distance. Of course artists soon realized they need not draw at all, but could use the image created directly in Photoshop, or any other program as the basis a fully rendered work. This book is a well organized, well presented, user friendly guide to a program that often is not any of these things.IMHO This is guide is the manual that should have come with DAZ studio, If you own DAZ, or are interested in getting started in 3D art, you want this guide at your finger tips; the time and money it will save you; this manual will pay for itself time and time again.

It's quite easy to have chit-chat style (although some paragraphs are redundant such as "As described in Chapter 3..." and repeat the procedures again)In Chapter 4, instead of going into the details of morphs, the author ask his readers to buy a product and wastes many pages to illustrate it.In Chapter 11, instead of introducing free stuff like Sculptris, the author ask his readers to buy Modo.I don't know. I give 4 stars because I recommend this book to my fellow beginners. But I don't like the way the author has done his way. He expresses his opinion how he dislikes DAZ UI. I wish he would listen to what I don't like, too.

A beginners guide would be a more appropriate title. I am not sure this qualifies as a complete guide. That being said, it is an easy read, and would be good for a beginner.

I have had DAZ Studio 4 for a long time but I use Poser for my 3d modeling. But more and more is going to DAZ Studio 4 so Ibought this book to help me learn DAZ Studio 4. I think it is a very good book.

Lately I have been reading a number of books on creating and publishing non-fiction books on Kindle. Most of them give pretty much the same advice, some longer, some shorter. This book is well-written, more opinionated, more complete, and the best I’ve read so far.If you’re reading this, you know what Kindle editions are. Createspace is also owned by Amazon and produces paperback books by “print on demand” technology. The result is that if you are also published through Createspace you can sell paper versions of your Kindle e-book. The author points out that to publish first on Kindle, then Createspace, is harder than adjusting your book and uploading to Createspace first, and then, from there, generating the Kindle edition.The author’s main theme is that you should try to produce a book for Createspace and Kindle at the same time. Doing a Createspace book makes the Kindle edition follow on very easily and naturally. A friend of mine has tried this and even a year after publishing he says he gets about 50% of sales from each source. Incidentally, this works for fiction as well as non-fiction although the author of this book has experience only with non-fiction.On balance the author’s theme is very persuasive. Moreover, he gives lots of tools, perhaps too many. He gives advice running the gamut from picking a chair in which to write all the way to preparation of your cover and manuscript and uploading it. I tend, in the absence of experimentation, to believe his experience and reasoning.The advice appears to be very sound, and is just enough different from some of the prevailing conventional wisdom to be provocative. The result is that this book helps you think through all the stages of publishing your book and the choices you can make. It should be in your writer’s library along with some of its competitors.If I have any criticism, it is that certain portions of his book are TOO detailed and complete. It is sneakily encyclopedic. For instance, he covers how to format and upload your book to Createspace (and Kindle too) in immense detail, and this is right after telling you how you might come up with a topic and set yourself up to write. Obviously, this book is also a reference and would be read several times, at least in part, as you progress with your project.One very nice feature is the author’s including lots of links and references to useful web sites that most of the authors of similar books have not included. And, he lists some neat tools for writing which most do not mention such as a program called “Evernote.”So far I have not seen a book on self-publishing through Amazon which is as complete and useful as a permanent reference as well as an introduction to the entire process from wish to royalty.

The burgeoning sub-genre of How To Guides for independent authors has a welcome new addition in author Rick Smith's handy book detailing the ins and outs of self-publishing to Amazon's KDP platform. At 200 pages plus this is one of the more substantial titles and Mr. Smith knows his stuff. Yes, there is a lot of free information on line for novices but nothing beats having so much of it in one place. There is a lot of unique knowledge here. I especially liked the section on formatting - my least favorite chore as a KDP author. This book is perfect for people new to KDP who are serious about presenting their work in the best way possible. For this purpose, I wholeheartedly recommend this guide. A solid 5 Stars.

Nothing about formatting something that won't look like it's a word processing file that's been slapped into a book (with the attendant odd spacing, etc.). The penultimate book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series shares all the features that have made this series such a pleasure to read. It has imaginative modernization of classical mythology, likable and capable protagonists, wonderful humor mixed with doses of tragedy and pathos, all told in the sardonic first person by Percy Jackson. In addition we have the Labyrinth itself - virtually alive and as much a gripping and interesting character as any flesh and blood mortal, monster, god, or demigod. The action sequences are well choreographed and the overreaching plot and subplots that run through the entire series are pushed towards what promises to be an page turning climax.After I finished this book I immediately ordered the Last Olympian and some other Riordan titles. This is a juvenile series but I'm thinking there are plenty of adults like me that are having a blast following this fun series. Highly recommended.

My 11 yr old daughter loves this series and asked me to read it with her. I found myself reluctantly enjoying these books. I like the hidden morality lessons and the mythological component, which has inspired her to learn about the Greek gods independently. There is a romantic component between the characters which I could do without, but it's all PG and nothing too hot and heavy. Violence is a component of the books but it is limited and not graphic at all.

This books keep getting better and better, don't they?I want to make this brief and spoiler free, just in case someone who hasn't read the book reads it.I am 13 years old and hard to please in the reading department, really, the books that have always caught my attention are those of adventure and fantasy (for example Harry Potter) and this book has it.After reading The Titan's Curse I believed the books couldn't get any better, and I was proved wrong.The Battle of the Labyrinth is amazing, it has a lot of fighting, some interesting things about Greek mythology that I never knew about, a little romance (We all know we're just waiting for Percy's and Annabeth's friendship to evolve into something bigger!), funny stuff and much more!!We get to see more of characters that had disappeared (*cough* Nico *cough*) and meet very interesting new people!I highly recommend this, and if you're reading this then there's two things you can do:1. If you haven't read the book then what the hell are you waiting for? Go get it!2. If you have read this book then buy the next one! It's what I'm gonna do right now!

Well, this book was definitely a penultimate book. I think it ranks #4 of the 5 books in this series for me, mainly due to so much of it feeling like build up to what’s coming in the last book.The characters were all great and consistent to themselves which is always important, and there was nothing inherently wrong in the plot of this book but it just failed to launch for me. There wasn’t really any stakes or any moments I didn’t feel like things weren’t just being prepared for The Last Olympian.I do wish Riordan would slow his writing down though. I’m fully aware this is a middle grade book but that doesn’t mean you have to skimp in detail. There was such little detail a lot of the time in favor of skipping from one thing to the next to the next. It doesn’t ruin the story by any means but it sure does make it feel more shallow than necessary.Those are really my two main gripes. I think the Percy Jackson series is incredibly fun though, and I can’t wait to see where it’s going in the final book. 3 stars.

Each new book that I read in this series is better than the last one. This is probably because I'm getting to know the characters a little more each time, and I have some back stories about them to reflect on from the previous books. As usual I'll try to keep my thoughts spoiler free.Rick Riordan has once again cleverly entwined the mythical world of demigods into the modern world in such a great way. I really liked the concept in this book. The Labyrinth is an amazing setting and is so mysterious. It's a place that has so many possibilities and potential for adventure, that I hope we haven't seen the last of it.Percy is once again on a mission that is full of danger and humour, to stop the baddies from passing through the Labyrinth and into Camp Half-Blood. Aside from the main characters, a number of others have carried over from the previous books. They have added some interesting new sub-plots to keep an eye on and I'm guessing that these characters will have pivotal roles in the next book. I have to say, that I found Nico quite annoying, but I put that down to clever writing that has created a character that is triggering my emotions. No doubt, the next book will build on his story and I will hopefully understand why he is like he is, and why he annoys me so much. Privately, I'm also suspicious of one/more character/s, but I'll let the next book prove me either right or wrong.The Battle of the Labyrinth is another great instalment in the Percy Jackson series. I'm keen to get straight into the next and final book to see if everything turns to rotten eggs, or if the world will survive. I'm confident I know which ending it will be, but it's the journey that fills the books that we love to read, not just the ending.

Urrrrrrgggg!!!!!!! I am rereading this series, and because I know what will happen, I am so frustrated that some things did not happen in this book!!!!! This book was great, and I loved it, and I almost CRIED when I finished it because it ended on a cliffhanger!!! Then I remembered that I had already bought the last book and I was okay again! This book is a must read, and if you have not read the beginning of the series yet, drop everything you are doing right now and START READING!!!!!!! I recommend this book and this series to anyone who can deal with suspense, loves a good action novel, and can enjoys modern Greek mythology. SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!!!

This was a gift for my son and he is currently reading it and is loving it. He's engrossed and doesn't want to stop reading, when it's time for bed, or a meal.
