You definitely can tell that the author read the books by Self and specially Cordell, since many of the designs are direct applications of those books. That being said, the book delivers what it promises which is a good introduction to several audio projects and the ready-made circuits for the audio enthusiast. The major gripe I have with this and the other books of Mr. Slone, is that the pcb masks are printed on the book rather that providing a CD with the mask files, this means that in order to build the circuits at the end of the book you cant just photocopy a page without taking the book apart, you have to either cut the page or open the book so much that the spine breaks and only then you are able to photocopy the entire page properly without cutting it, the editor should consider including a CD or offer a plastic/metal comb version of the book so you can easily open the book and photocopy the circuits you want to build.

This is a reasonable source book for the beginning or intermediate builder. The included circuits are common place and not of particular interest to advanced Audiophiles. The information is sound, apart from a couple of errors, but is probably not adequate to fully understand the circuits.Unfortunately, this kindle version continues the underwhelming trend to include illegible graphics in electronic texts. Many of the schematics are barely legible, with some component values very difficult to read. To be fair, I also see this in some traditional books on technical subjects as well.If you are serious about learning audio circuits, I recommend Douglas Self's series, although at considerably greater cost. If you just want a cookbook of common circuits, this will do.

Although this book took a quite circuitous route to get here (Colorado Springs/Utah/Nevada/back to Colorado Springs) I have already dabbled with a couple of the projects and found them well thought out and presented. I would, however, avoid the Kindle version simply because the schematics are too small to read.

Randy Slone has provided a book to live on for his readers to learn from his vast knowledg and experience base building amps and electronic projects for his work and hobby. I read and read this volume for knowledge and entertainment. This is not exclusive information, but here it is presented so the expermenter or hobbiest can follow along, build and experment with his own projects. I don't know where one first learns what Randy Slone knew about audio electronics, but if you know the basics of electronics you can gain alot from his writhing. I highly recommend this book for study and just good reading.

Comprehensive coverage of audio system basic components and clear instructions on how to build them, including making your own circuit board (if you so desire). The preamble describing how the circuits work is also very educational and helps me with making informed decisions in selecting type of circuit, modifying the circuits or troubleshooting problems. My only disappointment is that there isn't any projects for building equipment to create sound effects such as hall, delay, echo or distortion effects, which are commonly incorporated with sound systems and find occasional use.

The book itself is fantastic. Has many interesting designs and works to dispel lingering myths about Audio Devices. I have -0- complaints about the book itself. Do yourself a huge favor and buy a physical copy for your workbench.OTOH: The Kindle Edition sucks big time. About 50% of the schematics are unreadable! You cannot zoom in or see the various components at a useful detail level to determine values or part numbers, making the whole book (on kindle) useless for constructing the projects within. I have excellent vision, and my computers (3 Macs, 4 PCs) are equipped with excellent Monitors, but none of them (nor my phone or kindle) displays these troubled schematics adequately. This is flat ridiculous... I am running the latest Kindle software on both my PCs and Macs. It is offensive to me that Amazon will not add this critical and easily coded function into the software. They may think it's clever to leave it out so people will buy a physical Kindle (which CAN zoom), but its going to cost them in the end, I am already buying more books second-hand and will be avoiding ANY and ALL kindle books in the future until the Zoom functions are added to the Mac and PC versions of the software. As a result of my warnings and comments 5 other people will not be buying kindle books or devices until this is corrected, if at all. 3 of them are constantly buying books and technology... figure it out Amazon.Update about Kindle Zoom: 03/06/2011 - I upgraded my copy of Kindle for Android (For my Droid Mk. 1) and now I can zoom in on my PHONE... Still NO change on the zoom on PC or Mac, despite 2 software updates since.

Slone covers a wide range of audio projects in this book: amplifiers, preamplifiers, filters, and protection circuits. The reader is assumed to understand basic electronics terminology, but everything else is explained point by point. An easy-to-read format supplies just enough theory for understanding the circuit, then goes right to the practical application. Slone even provides 1:1 scale artwork of numerous designs for those who want to etch their own circuit boards. For those wanting to go deeper into amplifier theory than what is presented here, this book is an execllent companion for Slone's in-depth treatment of the subject, the High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual.

I read through this book and it gives a lot of sound advice about building amps. Even though, I haven't built any of the projects in the book (I have no interest in making circuit boards). It has given me the courage to build some really good amps from kits and save a lot of money doing so.

About the Author

Allan D. Pierce was born in 1936 and spent his early years in Iowa, Kansas, and New Mexico. After receiving a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT, he was employed by RAND (1961-1963) and Avco (1963-1966). His work during these years was concerned primarily with the analysis of infrasonic waveforms generated by thermonuclear explosions, and this broadened into a life-long interest in all aspects of physical acoustics, applied mechanics, vibrations, and wave physics. From 1966 to 2012 he held a succession of professorial appointments â€• at MIT (1966-1973), Georgia Tech (1973-1988), Penn State (1988-1993), and Boston University (1993-2012). He retired from BU in 2012, and founded the Cape Cod Institute for Science and Engineering in 2017. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and is a recipient of the ASA Silver Medal in Physical Acoustics and the ASA Gold Medal, the ASME Per Bruel Gold Medal, the Rossing Prize for Acoustics Education, and the Gold Medal of the Acoustical Foundation of India. Over the years he has had many editorial positions, including being the founding co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Computational Acoustics and the Editor-in-Chief of the Acoustical Society of America. It is not intellectually loaded like Winter's _Still Bored_, and it is not a poetic masterpiece like Weight of Glory or Manalive -- it is just a good, solid, straight-shooting book talking about some problems Christians can have after a while, where life just seems to always be the same old thing with no magic or sparkle, and some ideas on how to get wonder back, viz. by being grateful, immersing oneself in Christ's love, and practicing some spiritual disciplines.Zacharias` writing style is very good and pious, and the stories he shares exude love for Christ, which was very nice and uplifiting in an ordinary sweet sort of way. However, I was hoping for content that was a little more magical, with longing and wonder encased in poetic phrasing and literary suspense. Perhaps Zacharias' gift is more along the lines of straightforward prose -- I don't know, as this is the first Ravi book I've read. Just make sure you read this book for what it is, and enjoy it where it's good.

Ravi has a gift for bringing something down to a level of understanding without diminishing the exercise of the mind. He won't disappoint anyone who has enjoyed his other books. Out of This World: Across the Himalayas to Forbidden Tibet, Lowell Thomas, Jr. I read this book about 60 years ago, as a young lad, and enjoyed it thoroughly at the time. LT, Jr. was also a lad at the time he wrote the book. The book was thoroughly enjoyable , fascinating and highly exciting. When I noticed that a Kindle version was available, I decided that I might enjoy re-reading this delightful book. Though out-dated by world events, the book is still a great read, and I recommend it to all those seeking to read true adventure books.Nate Lerner

Interesting book, but more info than I needed - still worth the read. Does illustrate the sad end to Tibetan independence.

Have only made it 1/2 way through this book, but it's fascinating! The 2 Thomas's descriptions are well done and I keep wondering what challenges they will meet next.

The material that the Thomas's give the reader in this book is perhaps out-of-date, but most fascinating at the least! It gives us the description of what Tibet was like in the middle of the 20th century . . . and perhaps help us understand the situation that Tibet is in today. Certainly a good read!

I've only received the Lowell Thomas book. It's just as good as when I first read it years ago. It was in excellent condition

The book was recommended in "Seven Years Across Tibet". I am enjoying learning through Lowell Thomas' eyes.

About the Author

Bill Sweetenham was the coaching force behind Australia's success at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. He was voted Australian Coach of the Year three times and has coached 63 swimmers in international competitions to 27 medals in four Olympics and seven World Championships. He spent more than 20 years coaching Australian swimmers to success before accepting the position of head coach of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (1991 to 1994). He then returned to Australia as the national youth coach to prepare up-and-coming swimmers for the 2000 Olympics. To date, he says he's most proud of placing nine swimmers on the 1989 Australian Pan Pacific Team who scored a 100% strike rate for improved heats to final performances and a 100% personal best strike rate. Sweetenham was named Great Britain's national performance director in November 2000, a position he currently holds. The rebuilding of Great Britain's team didn't take long: They posted their best results since 1975 at the 2001 World Championships in Japan. In addition to taking national teams to the height of international success, Sweetenham continues to lecture, publish, and conduct clinics all over the world. John Atkinson returned to his homeland and joined Sweetenham in Great Britain as the national youth coach with British Swimming in November 2000. Born in the United Kingdom, where he swam competitively before starting a coaching career in 1985, Atkinson was a team coach at the national and club level in Australia from 1995 to 2000. While in Australia, he coached at the Elizabeth Aquatic Club; was team coach with the Australian team at the Oceania Championships in 1997; national youth camp coach in 1997; and head coach for the successful Tip Top program in 1998, where he first had the opportunity to work with Sweetenham. Atkinson has worked with teams from Australia, Japan, India, and the Republic of South Africa national youth team. He currently resides in Lancashire, England, with his wife, Victoria.

Covers everything from drills, workout ideas, season planing and evaluation, dryland training ideas. Tips and ideas for junior squads all the way to Masters. A great investment for Swim coaches at all levels.

I am a swim coach for Triathletes. This book certainly expanded my ability to refine my coaching and the program I have set up for them. Even though this book is not specifically for Triathletes, the information can me tailored to any swim program. Great asset to my swim books!

This book is the bible of competitive swimming. There is so much information there is absolutely no reason why any swim coach should not be able to put together a successful training programme.

I do not have a weight problem but was feeling rather crappy/tired/hungry even after an hour or so of eating. Couldn't figure it out. After reading this book I believe the connection between caffeine and insulin & insulin resistance, higher cortisol levels and reduced muscle mass has been a likely contributor to my downhill spiral. Over time I had noticed an overall feeling of fatigue and also my upper legs felt very tired while hiking and I wondered why as other than drinking coffee I thought I was living a fairly healthy life. I began to see not only the connection to caffeine but what & how I was eating in relation to it that most likely has been an important factor as well. The info on tea, fluoride and the thyroid was very interesting to me as a few years ago I began drinking a lot of green tea. So far I have switched from 4 or more cups of tea per day to a cup or two (max) instant coffee while changing my eating habits and already am beginning to feel better. The next step is to wean off the instant. Wish me luck! When one realizes how much havoc caffeine can wreck on the bodily systems it is a real eye opener. Another great book is Caffeine Blues which I am now reading.

I have had a difficult time losing weight and I also crave my coffee mocha, chocolate and salty sweet snacks. I started the Whole 30 4 days ago and also ran across this book. I'm now also cutting out caffeine for my next 26 days. I'm so grateful to have found the information that this book provides.

I had been an avid coffee drinker for 40+ years and noticed many years afterwards that drinking coffee with food does kicks up my appetite; however, a cup in the morning on an empty stomach does not. So, the author gets a star for that. About 5 yrs ago, I changed my caffeine habit to 1 cup in the morning (no breakfast) and decaf for the rest of the day. Middle age female hormones changed and weight loss has been very difficult so I've been tweaking different habits to effect a change. I have been focusing on diet and exercise and nothing earth-shattering is happening so I thought I'd get this freebie book a look.Different people have different reactions to every substance ingested or not. The thought that caffeine could affect so many areas of our body is a bit shocking. Even some teas are not good because of the little bit of caffeine and flouride? Flouride is in water too. I've switched to bottled water years ago but I can't get too paranoid not to take a swig of tap water to down my vitamins. Nor will I get so paranoid about every substance that someone comes out with that is not good for you. Especially since there is as many opposite viewpoints depending on what book you read and what website you come across. Confusing and overwhelming really. But a conspiracy theory on why the world wants us to consume caffeine is a far stretch for me.I'll stop the all day de-caf coffee and keep up my 1 cup caf when I awaken and see if I even need the caf coffee at all in the mornings. It won't kill me to give this a try though I'm doing the gradual method. I've already eliminated caffinated soda, only occassionally have de-caf diet soda, rarely eat chocolate and only drink herbal tea anyway. We'll see if that helps my hormones and helps with my weight loss efforts.His advice on Vitamin D I think is reinforcing but mainstream now and pretty much a household supplement to get on board with. Since I live in the North, I do take a Vitamin D twice a week. I've had my blood levels checked for Vitamin D before taking them and ironically my results were good. But I take it 2x a week and my doctor agrees with that.While reading the book, I couldn't help but be reminded that (no offense men) that when men have some weight to lose, they modify one thing and off comes the weight! Women are a different story. So, I'll be interested to see if woman (especially peri or menopausal woman) respond to this method with reported weight loss.

I read just about every affordable diet and fitness book that comes out. So I almost know what some books are going to say before even reading them. But, I hope to get a few new bits of information that will help me understand all the incrediable fatness I see everywhere. (Including my extra 20 to 30 lbs.)Wow, what an eye opener! Yes I really believe caffeine is a big contributor. Years ago I lost 40 lbs. on Atkins. Over several years I gained it back. (Atkins says...no caffeine.) My first time on Atkins, I followed the program and lost the weight.. The second, third and fourth times I did ok with Atkins but never returned to my original success. Now I think I know the reason. Only on my first Atkins diet did I follow the no caffeine rule. I just thought..."Coffee has no calories, I like it, I'll drink it." Big mistake and now I think the reason Atkins worked so well the first time.I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a big coffee or soda drinker and have tried just about everything to lose that extra 20 to 60 extra pounds.

This book really motivated me to get off caffeine. I'm on day five without coffee, tea or cola and I found it helps to use a massager in the morning to wake me up, and take Royal Jelly for energy, it's the food of the queen bee. If you're a guy you may want to take Gotu Kola instead- it gives energy, but is an androgen. This book has important information about what can cause diabetes and how to prevent it. It gives the truth. Society tells you coffee is good for you, but the anti-oxydants are in the aroma only, and it is just a little bit.

Eugene Wells has written a must read book debunking many of the myths associated with caffeine. His sections on how caffeine affects our hormones including cortisol, thyroid, testosterone, and insulin are easy to read/understand and all backed by scientific literature. I especially enjoyed his sections on green tea and flouride and the dangers of de-caffeinated products. Overall this book is an excellent read loaded with great information!

I love coffee but also have suspected it was a contributing factor to weight gain.....contrary to other things I've read that coffee helps you lose weight. So i was happy to find this book.....it is well written and informative....and has inspired me to try and give up my coffee if only to test the theory.
