When I first heard about this book coming out, I got very excited. I first saw Back to the Future in the local theater when I was 9 years old, and since then, I have been a huge fan. Over the years, I have gotten the various behind-the-scenes books, and incarnations of the movies. I now have them on Blu-ray and have about 10 various DeLorean time machine models.I received the book via UPS yesterday afternoon and started reading it right away. By the time I realized it, it was 3 AM. It's an excellent book and delves into many known and unknown facts, which I appreciate greatly. Gaines has tapped into the BTTF universe and I highly recommend this book to any true fan.

As one of many big fans of the Back to the Future: The Complete Adventures - Limited Edition , I knew I had to get this book and read all about the behind the scene situations in relation to this series of movies. Its a quick read for the most part surprisingly with it going in chronological order in the history of how things happened during the making of and filming of each of the movies of the iconic trilogy. The author went through various interviews, research sessions and data collecting to get every bit of information he could on all the subjects that are related to the trilogy. The technology, the actors, the movie studio (Universal), the Delorean, Hoverboards and all the people who were involved with its creation. (Most notably Director, Robert Zemekis and writer, Bob Gale.)And it does a good job of trying to fill in those little extras that are mentioned in commentaries and are just well known by now by fans of the now over 30 year series that started way back in 1985 as a script that no studio wanted any part of.The book is very heavily focused on the first film of the series that started it all, Back to the Future. With Part II getting less focus and Part III almost nothing at all. That is probably the biggest problem with the book itself. Also a bit of a problem is, there really isn't that much to talk about in relation to the series of films and the related that isn't already well known, especially with the sequels. The first movie is so iconic and everything that went behind the scenes in relation to it is actually quite interesting. But again any true Back to the Future fan should know most of these stories. For instance how Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly and only later did Michael J. Fox (MJF) become available to do the movie, even after filming started. And the book focuses a lot on the situation involving the replacement of said actor. As that probably is the biggest story line of the first movie, as how many movies start filming weeks in and decide they don't like the lead actor and have to replace him and do it all over again? And it really delves into everything in relation to the first movie. A lot of MJF facts without actually getting much from MJF himself which was odd. The book seemed very Lea Thompson quote filled but not much with the star himself. But at least you do get your fill of stories and knowledge when it comes to the movie that started it all. You will definitely feel like you have taken a trip from the start of the movie's creation to its conclusion. Focusing on the stars, vehicles, people behind the camera, how the movie did, the effect it had, the filming of. Everything is there and in great details. But when we get to Part II and beyond it becomes more brief and choppy. The book will focus on Back to the Future Part II in the later part of it, and the main focus, (as again any true fan of the trilogy should know) is the fact that Crispin Glover, who played George McFly from the first movie wouldn't come back due to a disagreement between he and the powers that be. (The actual reason still in dispute with both parties blaming the other over why he didn't come back even after this books tries to delve into it) As well as the bitterness of Jefferey Weissman who played the part of George in the movies as a replacement and his role being heavily reduced due to their trying to cover up the fact that its not Crispin Glover. And of course a lot on the hoverboard focus and how they did those effects using 1989 limitations (including an injury with a stuntwoman during one of the hoverboard scenes). As the book comes to an end they throw in a quick chapter on Back to the Future Part III and it doesn't really focus around much. It has mentions of Mary Steenburgen and talks about the marketing behind not just the third movie but all the movies, which was odd to be talking about suddenly instead of the third movie itself. But that's really it. I was actually quite disappointed as we learn so much about the first movie and get some interesting information in relation to the second but then the third movie is like the forgotten child that we have to be nice to and make mentions of but not really delve into it as if there was nothing important to say on it.So that's why this book is far from the most informative and must have book when in relation to the movie. You learn more about things from the bonus discs of the film itself and the commentary then you do here with a lot of the interesting facts in relation to the trilogy. The first movie he probably goes on for a bit too much talking about details that didn't matter then he gets to the other films and he doesn't give it that same in depth focus that one would like after reading all we did about the first movie as we are going through the book. But what this book will do well is teach those who are either new to the trilogy or not the die hard fans who know all about the little details that this book talks about and will be learning about for the first time as they read it. This came off great for that purpose. I again wish he focused more on the sequels, cartoon series, ride and video game then he does here. He makes mentions of all but it seemed like as the book went on he talked less and less about things in the same great detail as when he started.Still was a worthwhile read and a nice attempt to get it all into one book. But its far from the most complete or informative book that could have and should have been made here. This is heavy.(I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 if we could do half stars here as its close but not quite there as it should have been.)

There was not enough new, never-before- known information in this book. The first 60 pages are okay. A few things are interesting, such as what the studio bosses wanted changed, what the first draft was like, and what a pain Crispen Glover was. But after that the book seems padded. There was a healthy section on a stunt that badly injured a stunt woman. I felt bad for her, but this story was so long that I skipped over much of it. The parts on 2 and 3 were not all that interesting. If you are 14 years old and have just watched the movie for the first time, maybe you'd find this book interesting. I've had 33 years to hear most of the stories that are in this book, so I regret the purchase.

As a huge BTTF fan I didnt know what to expect going in and what new stories I could possible find out. Having said that, I started the book and blew through it within a week because its an easy read but also I couldn;t wait to read what was coming next. Caseen really puts you in the era and its like you are in the room of when the action is taking place. Did I read some stories I read before? Yea but I also found out some new ones! This book isnt proclaiming it to be brand new never before heard stuff, but its a fun read that takes you back and gives you some insight to how the movies were made and its only like 10 bucks! I cant NOT recommend this. GET IT before time runs out!

We Don't Need Roads is a collection of details from (what I consider) the greatest trilogy of all time. Any fan of the Back to the Future series owes it to themselves to own this book. It's an amazingly engaging read, discussing elements well known as the hiring and firing of Eric Stolz in the lead role, as well as items not well known such as a horrifying hoverboard stunt gone wrong in Back to the Future Part II. Author Caseen Gaines points out so many different behind the scenes that one wonders if more is left to be uncovered. For the time being, this novel will satisfy the thirst of any lover of Back to the Future. Buy it!

This was a fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the making of the Back To The Future trilogy. The book contains little-known facts about the casting (and miscasting) of the films as well as insights into the development of the stories and what it took to bring them to life. My only quibble about the book is that it spends more time than I would have liked discussing the impact of the films on the global culture and on events that have occurred around the world over the last thirty years, probably at the expense of more details about the movies themselves. Still, I highly recommend it for fans of the films.

From the Inside Flap

TAI CHI / AGES 4-8 Tai Chi is fun for children because they can imagine they are playing with birds, tigers, monkeys, and dragons. They can even pretend they are flying. However, children also reap the many health, learning, and social benefits of Tai Chi--focused attention, enhanced creativity, and improved balance, circulation, and overall health--through the eight simple exercises introduced in Tai Chi for Kids. Inspired by his own son’s excitement with Tai Chi at the age of only three, master teacher Stuart Olson appeals to the innate imagination and playfulness of children to teach them the eight basic forms of a Tai Chi practice. Children will love imitating the animals shown in the colorful and playful illustrations, and the photographs of Olson’s 7-year-old son, Lee Jin, provide the perfect guide to each of the postures. Olson uses the language of a storyteller, wonderful animal metaphors that invite children to pretend, and easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions so that every child can enjoy such exercises as “Chasing the Monkeys Away,” and “White Crane Cools Its Wings.” The book is designed for children and parents to use together or for independent learning by older children. The book also includes an informative teaching tale of how Tai Chi first began. Tai Chi for Kids introduces children to a lifetime of physical fitness and good health. STUART ALVE OLSON has studied Tai Chi, meditation, and Chinese language for more than twenty-five years. Considered one of the leading authorities on Tai Chi, Stuart has published a number of books on the subject and has taught classes and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. He presently lives in northern California. GREGORY CRAWFORD is a self-taught artist who has made his living as an illustrator and designer for more than thirty-five years. He has worked in advertising, magazine and book illustration, film, and television. He is also active in community theater and is a passionate amateur stonemason. Gregory lives in Vermont with his wife, Jacki, and their German shepherd, Athena.

I have been teaching my 2 year old grandson some Tai Chi moves. I bought this book for when he gets older and might want to try some of the real poses. It is a wonderful book with great instructions that are easy to follow.

This book was a great help in teaching young children. The illustrations are beautiful. There are short paragraphs that go with the 'animal' movements. Children loved the book as much as learning the movements.

Enjoyable animal movements. I teach Tai Chi to Seniors, not kids.

The illustrations are fantastic. This is a great way to teach children the different movements of tai chi.

This book has wonderful, playful information to teach children tai chi. The illustrations and the pictures are wonderful. My grand daughter and I read about one animal at a time and she was very interested in seeing how each of the steps completed the move. The moves are fairly easy and after a little practice, she was doing the moves like she had been doing tai chi for years.

I bought it for my 4 yr old grand son. He loves it. He does Tai Chi almost everyday. He puts the book on the floor, turns the pages as he follows the moves. I do Tai Chi also and he seemed interested. I am 74 yrs old and I am very excited about this.

This book has been fun for both the children and adults in learning about Tai Chi and the movements of the animals.

made it easier understand.

I loved this book! I can't wait for the next one! Happy with the end. I did think Dayna was alive when Allete thought she has died. I'm glad Torben and Allete married in this book. Idk if I could have lasted to the next book for them to get together. I am dying to see them go after everyone. I want to see if she goes and finds the white witch to train her. I felt like that chapter was a setup for possibly a spin off book? I am also curious as to what is happening to her family. We didn't get up updates through this book on them after Torben and his men set out to reque Allete and Clan Hakon, thought Allete did a good job of making her way back to him.

Thank you Quinn for another great book.I don’t write long about the book like others because those that write and write give the book away. I like to ask questions to see if you know or are enough for you to read.Death, sorrow, happiness and conclusion. Well fitting.Toben and Brent can sense the need for their royal princesses. Now, they are all separated and what can be done? Can they get back to one another? Will the loss effect them with good or evil?

I really enjoyed the storyline throughout both books. However, I felt the writing and humor was a little immature for adults. I also found many of the main characters reactions to situations unrealistic and even unrelatable to their own character. I enjoyed the casual/hip language spoken throughout both books however in a few spots it seemed awkward. I also became confused as we flipped between the character perspectives...there were a few places where private events or conversations happened between 2 people, but then you switched to a 3rd perspective and that person was aware of the events even though they weren't involved or told about it. I found myself wanting to flip back and figure out what I missed several times.

This second book in the Clan Hakon series is a seriously great read! I couldn't put it down. I re-read the first one to familiarize myself with the characters again and was so happy to get to continue reading. Such a gifted imagination Quinn has! There was a constant intensity, sprinkled with witty dialogue. The sweet love story is gripping. And the fight scenes were magnificent! Quinn Loftis is a gifted story teller and you won't be disappointed. All her books are amazing! Read this one now!

A wonderful addition to the Clan Harkin series. The characters are well developed and are growing. The plot is intriguing with so many different paths. It has another book following it so things are not wrapped up in a bow, but the series is well worth reading.

I am not a fan of darkness, of pain. While life holds dark moments, I prefer the fantasy of struggle and victory. The Viking's Captive had a few dark moments that I prefer to ignore, but I am now looking forward to Book Three. Saucy, witty women who are ultimately victorious are my daydreams.

This book start where the first one finish. The separation between our main character, our viking and princess, will make you want to continue reading until the end. Amazing story of love, loyalty, honor, and family will make you love this story.

I will admit there were a few mistakes but promise nothing that would take away the enjoyment of reading this books. Torben and Brent's struggles to get there women back was heart warming and at times hilarious. Alleges struggles to protect those dear to her made my heart bleed for her. The story is enthralling and will with hitched on every word. I couldn't finish this book fast enough, but when I did it felt all to soon. I loved Quinn's books, I have since Prince of Wolves and I still do after Viking's Captive. The story was yet another work of art.

**spoiler alert** Who should benefit from the coming power of AI? The author paints two pictures: the first a nightmare scenario where the vast majority of citizens are, as soon as their inevitable obsolescence by the machines, warehoused and forgotten, leaving the elite few ownership class to reap the rewards of the automation while the rest wallow in tedium and obscurity, the second a seemingly utopian alternative where the machines augment people's abilities instead of replace them, where the collective benefits of the machines are shared. What I found most interesting was that in both scenarios the author presented a seemingly inevitability of loss of personal liberties. While in scenario 2 the citizens lived in luxury, in the process they also gave up a not small part of their humanity or even free will (in the process taking a deep turn into science fiction territory), leaving a reader to question which would be more insidious: living in a box with your actions monitored and controlled externally, or living with augmentations but at a price of your humanity. I think it would be easy to dismiss this parable as anti-capitalist, but I speculate that the author is more interested in directions of innovation instead of governance or economy - demonstrating the outcomes when the machines are designed to either usurp or augment.

I fell that the technical plausibility and technical detail of this work was spot-on, and that the dystopia presented in the first half of the book was both believable and enlightening. I think the writing and the storytelling were better in the opening chapters and degraded slightly over the course of the book. I finished the first chapter thinking that I could probably write the software for a research-grade prototype of a system like "Manna" and I finished the second chapter well-aware of the very plausible dangers of such a system.I was less impressed with the second half of the book and feel that, from a storytelling perspective, this book's Utopia should have had a clearer dark side. I think the author left hooks in the book where such a thing could have been developed further, even while leaving a twisted utopia that was better than the world presented in the first half of the book. It could even have been written in such a way as to make the main character unaware of the negative aspects of his newfound Paradise while leaving them clear for the reader (perhaps the book was attempting to do exactly this and I missed it).I encourage the author of this work to write another book with basically the same premise, but more refined writing and more nuanced storytelling. I also encourage the reading of this book at technology-oriented book clubs, as it seems likely to produce a heated debate over ideas.

This book sure is something else.I've been digging into the whole 'post-scarcity economy' thing for years after having first been introduced to the concept by Jacques Fresco of The Venus Project [...], James P. Hogan's "Voyage from Yesteryear" and The Culture Series from Ian Banks. I've seen the dystopian version from The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson and Counting Heads by David Marusek. But this book Manna, drives the science fiction into the harsh limelight of the soon-to-be future. It doesn't even require real AI or advanced nanotechnology to achieve it. It all starts with a desktop computer in a back office and radio headset like they wear at the fast food restaurants. After reading this book, you'll never look at those employees wearing those headsets the same way again. After reading this book, you'll be wanting to find out where you can sign up for the post-scarcity civilization as how it should be.The book is simple, told in a narrative style by the protagonist much in the same style as Jules Verne, in my view. But that's the point: The plot is only supposed to be the vehicle to show you what is coming and how we can adapt to it as a new phase of civilization dawns on humanity.Certain details get overlooked in the process, such as how some of the things the expert software system MANNA tells/does to the employees that would get that employer in hot water with the lawyers (especially in California). But then again those details don't really matter, as the reader becomes convinced that the paradigm shift of robots taking away 90% of human jobs will happen no matter what kind of obstacles are placed in its way.For 99 cents and only 79 pages of reading time, this book is worth its weight in gold.

A very engaging little work somewhere between a short story and a novella. I found the dystopian side a bit more plausible, given what has been revealed to us about human nature over the last 5,000 years or so and that part of the story is develped in a nice cinematic trajectory from the initial spare and foreboding sentence gathering momentum from its own internal logic. Brain extends several tendencies already extant and builds a fairly coherent cautionary tale of where automation, corporate control and the surveillance state could easily lead us.The utopian side is fun but slightly unconvincing- kind of like a super optimistic techno/futuristic TED talk on steroids- from complete common ownership of ALL resources and ubiquitous robotic means of production through direct brain/cyber interface all the way to a Matrix-like (though cheerfully non-judgemental) dissociation of humans from their pesky bodies...except, of course, for the all important brain, floating in a rack of tanks somewhere...a little creepy. Definitely someone else's utopia. So, the slightly creepy (to me) technological singularity parts aside, all in all, a quick and entertaining ride.
