I was a bit confused for two reasons:1. The book I received from Amazon had a different cover than the one on the product page. Both, however, seem to be the same 1999 edition;2. My guide in Kenya, as luck would have it -- the trip was organized by my travel companion -- an absolute bird lover, carried a 1999 Helm Field Guides edition called, imagine this, "Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania" with him at all times. As unfortunately my book arrived late and I went to Kenya without it, I used the guide's guide (!) a lot. When I returned, I looked at my copy and it was identical to his. One is a Princeton edition, the other a Helm one. Perhaps because the former is a US edition and the latter a UK one.Confusion aside, and no matter if it's Princeton or Helm, anyone who goes to Kenya and looks at treetops / sky as well as the savannah needs one. The illustrations are precise (although nothing can be precise enough to allow for ID of Cisticolas in the field!) and complete; the texts are concise and, as far as I can tell, accurate. As a field guide the Princeton is quite heavy -- paper quality is good and, thus, so are the print colors -- and hefty, but you deserve that if you go birdwatching in a country with around 1,300 species. My one gripe with the guide is how the contents are organized. The page numbers listed refer to the species accounts -- pages 269 to 563 --, not the color plates. Let's say you're looking for a Hornbill. The family's account is on pg. 397. Go there to find out its color plate number. You must first visit the species account pages and from there flip back to the beginning of the book and one of the 124 color plates. Not exactly practical when you're trying to ID a strange bird in the field.Talking of Hornbills specifically...The family is divided between "Large Ground Birds", plate 30, where the editors seem to have dumped five small genera, and the family itself, plate 63.One word of advice: although several of the higher-end hotels in the parks carry the 2005 updated Helm edition, get your copy before departing to Kenya. In Amazon.com it costs $23 and in Amazon.co.uk it sells for £18. At the Kenyan hotel gift shops the price tag is around $50! And, according to my Kenyan guide, the 2005 edition is no diferent from the 1999 one, with the same illustrations and info. The van Berlo Kenyan birds guide some other gift shops there offer is less expensive but admittedly incomplete, so not enough if you're a hard-core birdwatcher.

This was the field guide I used for a short birding visit to Kenya, July 2015. I was relatively inexperienced with this avifauna, but I was able to identify just about all the birds I encountered, with the help of this book--and that of a superb local expert, Brian Finch. Without Mr. Finch, my birding partner and I would have spent much more time paging through our field guides. My friend had a copy of Stevenson and Fanshawe. It was helpful to have two books on hand, but I much preferred the Zimmerman book, since it covers only Kenya and a tiny slice of Tanzania, rather than East Africa in its entirety. Excellent as it is, the Zimmerman book does suffer from one shortcoming. Not having the range maps on the same page as the picture and text is a nuisance. I made up for that by marking up the book in pencil before the trip; I drew a little box beside the name of any of the species expected in the area where I planned to bird on this trip. Thus I would not waste time in the field looking at species from areas away from Nairobi. The pictures on the plates are numbered, rather than having the bird's name next to each picture; I pencilled in the names of all the likely species right next to their pictures, so that I would not waste time trying to figure out what bird was depicted on Plate 84, "5b." Since this book is now over 15 years old, I also found it useful to update the names of the birds. This is something I do before any international trip anyway, but in this case, there were many, many name changes to pencil in here and there. For example, that "5b" on Plate 84 is no longer the Common Fiscal--it is the Northern Fiscal. New visitors to Kenya might find it confusing to use this book if they have not boned up on the taxonomy before the trip, since so many splits and renamings have occurred. All in all, I found this to be a very good bird book, albeit one dating from a previous generation in the evolving history of birding field guides. In my opinion, all new birding field guides, and all subsequent revisions of existing ones, should follow the best possible format. That format has existed since the 1960's, when it appeared, I believe, in the old Chandler S. Robbins "Golden Guide" for North America. This format is used in the Sibley field guides, as well as in the wonderful Mullarney et al. The text and map for a given species should be on the left of the spread, with the pictures on the right. The name of each bird should be printed next to the picture. Period.

This guide is extremely comprehensive and nicely illustrated. However, the older, used copy I bought is VERY heavy (paperback, but.. ). I don't think I'll be traveling with it, but I'll try to absorb some basics ahead of my trip to these areas.

Another great guide to this part of the world's avifauna and very helpful in conjunction with the other available Princeton Field guide "The Birds of East Africa: Kenya. Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.

Excellent reference book for birdwatchers casual and serious. The only reason I don't give it all 5 stars is that the Index only has scientific names, not common names. The book would have been much easier to use if I could lookup a bird by its common name.

The book is exactly what I had in mind for an upcoming trip to Kenya and Tanzania to check out the wildlife. Highly recommended.

I bought "Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania" and "Birds of East Africa" (which focuses on the same region) in anticipation of an upcoming trip. Both books are much larger and heavier than I expected, especially for the price, but that just reflects the wealth of knowledge and page after page of color plates.Because both are so heavy, now I need to decide which of the two to take. Because "Birds of East Africa" has range maps printed opposite the color plates, I think it will be the more useful book to have in the field. When I get home, I'll update my review.

Was disappointed in the quality and colors of the illustrations and that the descriptions are not side-by-side.

Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you. I will also include a few sample photos of designs pages from the book as well.I reviewed the UK version of this book here on Amazon in May of this year. At the end of this review, I will discuss the differences between the two versions. The video and photos on this review will be of the US version only, except for the one which I will show comparing the two versions paper color.Once again, rather than discuss how this coloring book is like or different from TV series or to compare any of the Dr. Who actors and casts, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.As with the first Dr. Who coloring book, I really like the illustrations. I have found that I actually like these designs in this book even a little better than the first book. This is because I found these scenes to be a little more interesting and fun to color. The designs are by the same team of illustrators who were responsible for the first book, namely: James Newman Gray, Lee Teng Chew, and Jan Smith. There are 45 designs (even more if you count the title and preface pages.)The episodes included are from 1964 through 2015, so the range of Dr. Who's represented is good. This time the designs focus on Dr. Who in various time periods – including Vikings, ancient Egypt, the Battle of Hastings, with Winston Churchill and even with Shakespeare among many others. The designs are well drawn with clean black lines though it is easy to see that these designs are hand-drawn for the most part as the lines are not perfectly straight. Some designs are fairly open and easy to color while others are more intricate and will be a little more challenging but still a lot of fun.The book is well made once again. The designs are printed on one side of deep cream colored non-perforated paper. On the back of each page is a thumbnail version of the design along with a quote that is applicable to the design, the name of the episode and the year it was filmed and, in some cases, which Dr. Who it pertains to. The cover can be colored as well and has deep red foil touches which enhance it. The publisher once again missed an opportunity by not providing designs on the inside of the fold-out, attached cover; however, there are two flaps you can color if you wish where the printing is white on red background. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so removing pages is a matter of snipping threads. A good number of designs merge into the binding area so snipping threads may be the way to go if you decide to remove pages. This is what I found in coloring in and testing medium on this book:45 Dr. Who Time Travel DesignsPrinted on one side of the pagePaper is heavyweight, deep cream color, very smooth, and non-perforated.Sewn BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through the page. I recommend a blotter page be used under your working page to keep the page below free of seeping ink.Water-based markers bled through in the tiniest of spots except for Tombows brush end markers which did not bleed through at all.I recommend a blotter page be used under your working page to keep the page below free of seeping ink.India ink markers left shadows on the back of the page.Gel pens did not bleed through but needed extra drying time.My colored pencils were a little mixed. I was able to get good color and layer the same color and mixed colors well with both oil and wax based pencils. I had a little trouble with blending (using a pencil style blender stick.) The color smeared a tiny bit more than I am used to and that is probably because the paper is very smooth. The pencil did blend but not as well as it did with the British release of this book.My comparison of the US and UK version is fairly short. They weighed the same and are the same size. They contain the same designs. The differences are slight. The cover of the US version is slightly lighter with slightly darker red foil. The US paper is a much deeper cream tone. Both bindings are sewn but are sewn together on different pages. The biggest differences is in the feel of the paper. The US version paper is much smoother.I am happy with both but if I planned on doing a lot of blending of pencil or if I wanted lighter paper, I would opt for the UK version. Otherwise, I like both versions.

This was a gift for a friend who loves Doctor Who. She really loved it!It's a nice coloring book with plenty of pages to color. The pages are thick, so you could probably use markers, along with colored pencils. The scenes span all 12 Doctors, including Hartnell, Baker, Eccleston, Tennant, and beyond. There are companions included in many, if not most, of the scenes. I was especially tickled to note the presence of Captain Jack Harkness alongside Nine and Rose. On the back side of each page, there's a quote from the illustrated episode, along with a miniature version of the illustration. I'm not sure why they needed to include a "mini-me" version of each scene, way too small to actually color, but there you go.The scenes are a bit . . . well, almost psychedelic in nature. Lots of abstract imagery, with swirling lines and highly stylized portraits of the characters. It works if you enjoy coloring tiny, random shapes---which a lot of people do. I'm told it's relaxing, though I haven't tried it personally. In any case, this coloring book makes a great gift for any Doctor Who fan. Five stars and highly recommended for any dedicated Whovian, or sci-fi fan who enjoys adult coloring books. I suppose it could work for a child, but they might have trouble with the complexity of the images, I dunno.

My husband and I have been longtime Doctor Who fans. I received the previous "blue" Doctor Who Coloring Book as a birthday present - I was simply delighted. Now that it's almost all completed, it was time for the second "red" Doctor Who Travels in Time book. There are different artists who have different art styles portraying the life of Doctor Who, his companions and the hideous enemies. The Daleks and Davros are my favorites to color and watch on TV. I recommend colored pencils for shading but I also mix glitter pens and regular pens into the mix. So many TARDIS' to color, so little time. I use my imagination - no two of my blue police boxes are exactly the same.

Like the previous, Doctor Who Coloring Book, this book is sewn together and the pages are not perforated. If you want to take the pages out to color you’ll probably have to cut the threads apart instead of using an x-acto knife or the like. Some of the illustrations go all the way to the binding, which was really annoying because I couldn’t finished the full picture. Also like the previous, the opposite side of each page is mostly blank with only a quote from the show and a small picture of the reverse page. The pages are off-white and thick- but if you want to use markers or pens that bleed, such as sharpies, I’d still use a piece of craft or construction paper to make sure it doesn’t get on the next page. The illustrations in this book are better than the previous book in my opinion. The scenes are more dynamic and there are less ‘filler’ pages than the last book. There are still pages where parts of the illustrations are way too small to color for my liking. It’s hard to see and even harder to keep in the lines and get the picture how I want. For the old-school Doctor Who fans, this book contains many more of the classic Doctors which made me happy. Overall, a great coloring book for Whovians.

This is a must for any Whovian fan out there, whether you color or not. If you're particular about the details, this might not be the book for you. While the images depicted are true to the storyline, it's the characterization that might be a bit of a tickler to you. Some of the characters, while close to their real-life counterparts, aren't quite as realistic looking as the current book. Still, that being said, some of my favorite images are in this book and I haven't put it down since I got it!

WOW this is truly a "beautiful" book - full of tips and techniques. I do have almost all of Terry's Books, and this is the best one yet to date! It's perfect also for those just beginning to work with watercolor, and great for those old talented soles! It's just jam packed full of wonderful paintings (that you can do) and will want to do.The way Terry uses color really does come through in this beautiful book. I have "a lot" of "How To Watercolor" books and have to say that this one is by far worth the investment. I have made the mistake of buying a Watercolor book based on the few pages shown here and there and not read the reviews that other's are leaving, maybe had I read the reviews I would have saved money (a lot of money). You won't come away disapointed with this one. I like Terry's style of painting because although he leaves enough finished work for you to use your own imagination yet it's not so sloppy as to make one wonder if "an artist" even had an imagination at the time they put their Art and Instruction into print. As in just about anything in the world "Art" is truly in the eye of the beholder, for me Terry's style works and he teaches technique's that are easy for me to follow. I have to say I like Terry's style I have learned so much from him. I love this book it is "beautiful" and easy to learn how to follow what he is doing here..I know that you're going to really like this one it is beautiful and informative!

This book is chock full of tips, list of supplies, and step by step instructions along with color photos. I have to admit, though, I can't draw for beans and the addition of drawings would have been a BIG plus. So what I've done is trace the finished painting in the book using tracing paper and transfer that onto a piece of copy paper. I then take it to the UPS store and they blow it up for me on a 11 x 17 sheet to fit 1/4 imperial. Granted it's labor intensive, but it works! So, this book can be for beginners or any level IMO. Give this book a try, you won't be disappointed. You'l be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Not happy with this book and I ordered two different books of Terry Harrion. They both are nearly the same. I am keeping one and giving the other away as I don't need two of the same thing. This was crazy! I should have sent them both back to Amazon.

Love this book

Terry's done it again with clear directions, sumptious photos, and demonstrations that you will want to duplicate for practice and mastery. This book could easily be a painting course all by itself. I recommend anyone interested in mastering watercolor use it to advance your skills.

Really enjoyed this book and the wonderful examples of how he creates his effects. It is a visual treat to look at, and he explains many of the things you would want to know. Wished it were much longer as I would have been quite happy to continue exploring his world.

This book is amazing for bigginers or advanced learners

This is a great painting book. I am advanced painter and use it often to help me get that look that I want from my paintings.

Don't even think about starting to collect classic commemoratives without spending the money on this book by one of numismatics genuine true masters. Dave Bowers has written so many wonderful books on areas of numismatics that it is hard to tell you which is the best. While I don't think this is his best book (not that it isn't great...but Dave has written some seriously wonderful books about some very difficult topics in numismatics) it is an absolute must for anyone collecting commemoratives. I have to specify that I only collect Classic Commems....so I've spent no time on the modern ones in the book, but I can tell you that any information you want to know about the classics is in this book, including what to look for in terms of strike, condition and which grades he feels are the best values.Great addition to any numismatic library.

This is a great book on U.S. gold and silver commemorative coins. Anything by written by Q. David Bowers on coins is a fun read. The book covers both the classic era (1892-1954) and the modern era. Today, a type set of the classic 50 coin silver commemoratives would run approximately $30,000 in Mint State 64 condition, $60,000 in MS65, and $140,000 in MS66. Slightly less than double those figures would be needed if you wanted to have a complete classic 144 silver commemorative coin collection. If you aspire to collect classic U.S. commemorative coins, you must buy this book.Dave Bowers discusses the statistics, background, and key to collecting each coin. Time and time again, Dave explains that coins laden with abrasions and bagmarks were the result of the original planchet surfaces not striking up fully at the mint or that the coins were simply mishandled at the mint. And he encourages you to keep looking for a finer specimen. Critical information for those looking for exceptional coins. Given that the book is published on glossy paper and the pictures are in color, the book would have benefited from having the pictures in 2X size to show the detailing in each coin.Dave uses the Lafayette Dollar as an example of how the price increases as you go up the grade ladder. He also advises what grades he thinks are getting the best value for the money; he likes MS64 ($4,000) and MS65 ($12,000). A triple increase in the price of the Lafayette (or $8,000) for one step up in grade is a big difference! It would have been appreciated if Dave had gone a step further and explained what you actually get for the money, beyond the "label," when you go from a MS63 to MS64 to MS65 to MS66. Perhaps it would be overkill to do it for every coin; but, an example could have been made using the 1928 Hawaiian. I was delighted to learn that undipped Hawaiians often have a yellowish tint; I thought the yellow was the result of overdipping or a bad bath!!! How many coin dealers know that the inner "circle" or "line" often found near the obverse rim of the Panama-Pacific half dollar is due to die characteristics? Some readers may be disappointed that there isn't more of an emphasis on investing; but, Q. David Bowers is above all, a smart coin dealer. He knows that emphasizing investment isn't what sustains the coin collecting hobby; especially, with the roller coaster pricing of commemoratives. It's the collector that sustains the hobby and Dave is always trying to encourage the collector side of us.

I only give this three stars for a few reasons. As a price guide, this book is lacking:1) Someone else commented that the pictures are too small. Agreed, but unlike the same publisher's (Whitman) 'Red Book' which also depicts the coins in actual size (which has its advantages), this Commemorative book has no magnified insets showing close-ups of interesting features, the presence or lack of which affect the coin's value. Also, I think the picture quality is overall inferior to that of the 'Red Book', as if they were shot with a lower resolution or they're copies of copies of copies or something2) For the Modern Commemoratives, in the "Keys to Collecting" section he says the same thing over and over again: some variation of, "Superb gems are easily found in the marketplace." C'mon, is that really the best you can do or were you just saving time?3) There is *NO* information on the the myriad sets and special collector issues which the Mint has produced for nearly every Modern Commemorative. Really? The author *might* mention something like "there were 15 pre-ordering options" and then give you a low-to-high price range, but if you want to know the initial price and current value of your 2 or 3-coin Proof Set, you're out of luck with this book. Even the 'Red Book' has a section for that, and unlike this book it is NOT a book solely on US CommemorativesWhat it's good at is giving you the pure history and - more often than not - politics that are behind every Commemorative. Very interesting reading.BTW, there's a just-released book on Modern (only) Commemoratives: Modern Commemorative Coins: Invest Today - Profit Tomorrow. I pre-ordered but don't have it yet.

An excellent resource from a renown author. Great information in an enjoyable format. The price guidelines and census reports are from 2007 so bear that in mind. Prices have dropped dramatically on many classic commemorative coins. This is great news for those looking to start or expand a collection. Not so good for those who purchased them at higher prices.

You just have to tip your hat to Bowers, no one comes close to the knowledge and when you read you learn. As Bowers says, before you buy the coin, buy the book and read it. Well worth it if you are just learning or you are collecting, either way a good book to read even if you just want the stories behind the commems.

Good book, lots of info. No complains.

This book contains a wealth of good information but there is at least one glaring error that I found. On pages 200 and 201 the Bill of Rights half dollar is referred to as clad when in reality it is 90% silver.

Excellent guide
