In the interest of full disclosure, I must share at the outset that:1. I have known the author, Gerald Eades Bentley Jr. (Jerry) for most of my life. He was like a second father to me,2. I am mentioned in the book, and3. I grew up hearing many of the stories he has shared in this book. They fascinated me each time Jerry or his wife Beth told them to us.Most of Jerry’s writing has been academic – he was a teacher, a Blake scholar and a collector. But those of us who knew him personally, loved him and enjoyed listening to his stories of adventures in England, Algeria, France, India, China and other places, had been asking him for years to record them. I am delighted he finally did.Jerry passed away unexpectedly in August 2017 and his daughters were determined to publish his memoir posthumously. Having the book to read now is like having Jerry nearby. When I flip through the pages of Boondoggles: Travels of a Restless Professor, it is almost as if we are sitting together on the porch of his summer cottage at Lake Michigan – Jerry’s deep voice is telling me a story with his unique turn of phrase and sense of humor. In the pages of Boondoggles I see his unique storytelling style, his ease at engaging with people of any age and any background, and I experience all over again those adventures with polar bears, long boats, kangaroos and protest marches, that regaled me throughout my childhood.The kind of traveling Jerry and Beth, and often their daughters, Sarah and Julia, did cannot happen any more because the world has changed irrevocably. This makes Boondoggles a precious document of a bygone era. Jerry and Beth met in 1950 in a pub in Wales, then by chance that same summer on a bridge in Venice, and finally, a few weeks later in Paris, after which they realized they knew whom they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with – each other. That could have been the end of the traveling, as it is for many. Jerry could have gone on to be an academic and settled down to work and married life with Beth in a university town. Instead he became an academic, they made a base in Toronto where he taught at the university, and Beth also made it possible for them to travel frequently. They taught and lectured, exploring the world along the way. Often they were in a new country for a year at a time, and frequently that was the starting point of other expeditions to far-flung parts of the world. From bicycling in France on their honeymoon while the Tour de France was in progress – Beth cycled along with competitors for a bit – to living in a houseboat on Kashmir’s Dal Lake years later, the Bentleys did it all. As Jerry writes, “For 59 years, Beth managed my life firmly and inconspicuously. Hurricanes, revolutions, poverty, respectability – nothing fazed her. Beth could always manage.”You will learn more about Beth, and Jerry, as you travel through Boondoggles but you do not have to know them personally to start this book and enjoy it. So, I loved this whole series, although for some reason the second book was my favorite. I've waited a few days to review this one because I wanted to make sure I had my thoughts in order. Book two really focused on the relationships between the characters, and I think that is why it surpassed the other two. Rachel Marks has such a talent for that, for connecting characters and getting into their heads. While there was story progression in book 2, it focused more on the characters coming together, on the romance between Rebecca and Connor (who I totally shipped). In this one, the relationships continued to develop, but the focus returned to stopping Ava and there was something a bit off to me with the pacing. It seemed to read like a story that would require a fourth book, but it all wrapped up at the end of this one, but there's still, well, powers. That's all I'm saying. Maybe Marks is leaving a door open for more stories in this world?Anyway, this is a series I will likely read again. The characterization is top notch, the story world rich and plausible, the descriptions and voice wonderful.

I am sorely in need of a continuation of this series. Like seriously, how can I just stop reading about these characters I have fallen in love with?! It's not fair this is only a trilogy and I hope at some point Marks writes more. I still can't get these characters and this remarkable story out of my head. You don't understand. I have searched and searched for a book to hold my interest like these did-grab it and not let go-and I was overjoyed to find this series that I could just soak up for days on end. I haven't read that fast or that hard in ages. LOVE LOVE LOVED it. This book and all three. I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!

There was a lot I liked about this series finale. It was great to see Rebecca come into her own, and I found the way everything resolved very satisfying. My main complaint is I wish we could've seen more of Aidan's "lights" individual talents come through, since even by the end some of them never really seemed necessary. But I'll definitely miss this cast of characters after going through so much with them!

I have had the great privilege of reading all three of these books and was so excited to get my hands on the last installment. Marks does an incredible job tying up the ends. Aiden's struggle to save his sister and the lengths to which he has to go are thrilling and heart wrenching. Rebecca's story is also a big focus of this book and shows another edge to the world that Marks has created. I highly recommend checking out this series. It's a great series for people who love books by authors like Cassandra Clare and Holly Black.

Love the whole set!I got the first book for free from amazon and couldn't put it down, so I ended up buying the other two. It was well worth it! The story is so colorfull. The characters are all very well developed.The story line takes you through many turns and twists. Many many surprises.I feel very satisfied with the ending of the book. The author didn't try to please everyone. She made it real, with tragedy and happiness mixed in.Will be keeping an eye on other books by this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series, the angst off the young adults/teens was real and believable. The mythology was refreshingly close to how I imagine it could be if angels and demons were running around today, and who knows, maybe they are. the only thing is, the end is abrupt and uh, I wasn't ready for that, considering how the characters were built, it seemed simplified compared to the rest of the story. A fun read and I would give it a go, again.

This is a great conclusion to the trilogy of the hero and heroine. The third book is definitely in faster pace than the previous two books and wrapped up the main characters while opening up possible sequel or spin-off series for the supporting characters. While dancing on the fine line of PG-13, the author nicely pushed the storyline along to the finish line, with great epilogues for the main characters.

The darkness series involves super-powers, angels, demons, blood and guts - and even a fortune teller. The story starts fast and hooks you into wanting to read more in first chaper (book 1). Each book is a continuation as the stakes elevate - and through the series, escalates to a battle for good/evil dominating the universe. Was surprised that the characters were well developed, and weren't entirely predictable.

This item arrived with a broken leg and chips knocked off it so you could see the white resin underneath. I am not returning it since that would be more trouble than it is worth. I colored the white spots with a sharpie. That being said I do like the little thing and if it is not handled too much you can't tell the leg is broken. I don't consider it a bargain when an item arrives needing fixing.

Way too simple. Can't even see the 3rd eye. Not worth more than $5 IMO. Still nice if you are a collector though.

Terribly disappointing. The third eye is nothing more than a little bump and is not recognizable as an eye. Does not compare to TV image.

This is the best Banksy book out there, not just because it has the best photographs of his work but because this book was created by banks and not some one else.I bought this and "Banksy you are an acceptable level of threat." I GREATLY prefer this book over "acceptable level of threat." This is not just full of amazing photographs of his work but it has actual commentary by banksy himself! Its full of his witty and clever sayings that will have you rolling on the floor laughing.But most importantly it contains his philosphy behind art and why he does what he does. Its in his own words and not write by some outside source who "researched" his work.If you love street art and banksy more so, then you NEED TO BUY THIS BOOK!!! Out of the dozens of Banksy books, this is by far the best. After all it was created by Banksy himself.

I am a born & bred New Yorker and I am also an artist. Banksy is no vandal, he is a true artistic genius. I used to write graffiti when I was younger and those that write just "tags" are vandals. Banksy does beautiful work, transforms environments, and is very clever. He is now one of my favorite artists.To Mayor Bloomberg: You're an idiot...you want the NYPD to catch Banksy because you said he is a vandal? Get your priorities straight Bloomy....we have reckless motorcycle gangs terrorizing motorists, etc. Banksy is no threat.To my Ghetto neighbors...i.e. Bed-Sty, East NY, etc...some of you are on YouTube being shown harrassing people for taking pictures of Banksy's works on "your" walls and intimidating them for money....first off they are not "your" walls, secondly go get a job if you need money that bad instead of hanging on the street corner all day.Lastly, to my fellow artists bad mouthing Banksy as a cheat off Le Rat whatever his name is in France....everyone pioneers something and then there are the people that "carry the torch"....Banksy is that guy.Buy this book. It's awesome.

This was purchased as a present for my freshman college son, who had seen it in the bookstore during visits. I should say that he does already have familiarity with Banksy's work. He loves it. It's well made, very sturdy, nice binding (hardcover bought). Had terrific pictures and graphics. Lot's of captioning, some longer writing about pieces, periods, etc. Very dense, perfect for browsing thru bits at a time. And it's a real conversation piece in the dorm, helping to strike up conversations with other people who are interested in Banksy, art, street culture, you name it. Plus, my son isn't normally too interested in visual art, but here he is appreciating the medium in a very subversive way - that sneaky Banksy!

Banksy is probably the best known stencil artist and in my estimation, he's definitely the best. With a distinctly global view and wicked sense of humor he slams the status-quo all over the world and at the same time creates memorable art that is critical of the worst in human nature. But also celebrates the best of us too.I have enjoyed watching street art and creative graffiti grow over the last 30 years (I'm a 60 year old grandma). Banksy has raised the bar so much higher. His earlier work was strongly English, with commentary on uniquely British foibles, but every year it has expanded to lambast ridiculousness everywhere. I especially loved his rat series, which was brilliant.This book has a smidgen of his history with just enough details to give us a view into Banksy's perspective and goals, but not enough to identify him. And that's fine with me; I love the mystery of who he might be. He gets to remain "everyman" or any man and speak truth to power on our behalf. This book is a wonderful introduction to his work if you haven't seen "Exit Through the Gift Shop" or heard of him. And, if you're a big fan, it's a delight!

If anyone supposes they have a sense of humor and a little bit of irreverence, or is it reverence, for the human condition.... this book will sure to make that anyone a banksy fan. As you flip through the pages you might find yourself claiming each work as your favorite. I highly recommend watching his movie too. It feels to be a continuation of the story he tells... right when you were wishing you had a banksy piece on your wall he throws you a curve ball.. hilarious. It's not a race!

In this book is an excerpt from a letter in which a young man asks Banksy to stop stenciling his childhood neighborhood because it makes the area seem hip and Yuppies are moving in, raising housing prices such that this young man cannot buy a house here. Banksy's book is filled with inspiring, hilarious, and very intelligent statements accompanied by witty captions, but his work is the kind that speaks 1000 words by themselves. A true public artist, Bansky also offers his tips on how to take a town by storm in only one night. The art in this book is a response often times to public advertising; it is essentially a way for the public to respond to the ads that we are forced to see. A great and intriguing book.

Banksy's book, Wall and Piece, is truly something that could be appreciated on many different levels. Captured in vibrant color in the pages of this hard cover book, Banksy's art evokes many feelings. Whether it be a chuckle at the Mona Lisa holding an RPG, awe at the modified oil paintings placed in various museums, or appreciation of the clever detail of his urban rats, this book has images that will make you laugh, think, and wonder "Is Banksy 'just' a graffiti artist or, more likely, a super-talented commentariat that uses spray paint as his primary medium?" I think anybody who appreciates art in general could appreciate this book and it's contents.

This is my go-to book for my friends who hide their eccentricities. You know the type of people, the ones who have excitement in them but decorate their homes in pretty cookie cuttered decor. This book brings some life to the otherwise not so interesting and cliche coffee table.
