Perfect book for kids who enjoy reading about how things work. My son now points out robots when out in the car.

Great comic, lots of stuff packed in.

My son enjoyed

It was over my child’s head who is 13 he had a hard time with it.

The Science Comics series of non-fiction educational graphic novels is usually outstanding, but I found Robots and Drones a rare misfire for the line. I didn’t find this installment as entertaining, informative, or frankly, good as many of the others. It’s narrated by Pouli, a mechanical bird and “the first machine that ever flew”. But we don’t see how he worked, and his personality is non-existent as he walks through a catalog of things that can be considered robots, including:A coffee makerA vacuumA tea-serving doll in 1960s JapanA bomb-disposal robotExplorer dronesThe Mars RoverEarly on, the book tackles the idea of what a robot is (and isn’t — for example, a remote-control car, since it can’t respond to its environment). There are brief mentions of historical automatons, but I found these mentions superficial and unconnected to the main content, because they aren’t given sufficient space to be explained or described. Some of the items mentioned I only knew were relevant because of knowledge I already brought to the text (such as what cams are or why punch cards are historically important).Later topics include how robots and humans can work together, with each having different strengths, and how to build and program a robot. The latter is a great introduction to logical thinking and breaking down a task, but it seems to have wandered in from another book, particularly once we start delving into robot parts and how resistors work. There’s a lack of topic coherence here; instead, it feels like a grab bag of “concepts related to robots in some way”. I missed the stronger structures or even stories I’ve read in other Science Comics.Chabot does a terrific job with both the machines and people using them, though. I’m impressed by his animated sense of movement. I also liked the short section on robots in fiction, including Asimov’s Laws, and the resulting ethical questions robot development may raise. But again, there wasn’t enough space given, so the debate is raised and quickly dropped.There’s a final section, “25 Robots You Should Know!”, that I’d rather have read a lot more about than the one- or two-sentence descriptions given. Perhaps this would have been a better structure for the book overall. There’s good information here, but I felt as though a lot of space was wasted on irrelevant information, leaving me confused as to just what the purpose and message of the book was. This volume is part of the "Science Comics" series. The series started with some predictable topics - dinosaurs, volcanoes, and so on - but it seems to be expanding to cover less obvious and more "scientific" topics. Upcoming titles address rockets, sharks, and trees, (not all in one book of course, although that could be a good book), which seems to cast the net fairly wide. I mention the series mostly because this "Robots and Drones" book was intriguing and rewarding enough to make the entire series potentially interesting.This book struck me as awfully ambitious. It isn't just photos, drawings and snappy patter. Unusual for a book like this, it has serious and substantive content first and jokey asides later. The tone is an engaging combination of earnest, gung-ho, and into-the-future!, which makes the book, (intentionally I think), both informative and inspirational.The layout is comic book style. There are generally three to six full color panels per page. Drawings are comics/realistic and usually illustrate or act out whatever fact or principle is being introduced. Our host/narrator is a bird named Pouli that is modeled after an ancient mechanical bird circa 350 BCE. This amiable guide leads the reader through the history of robotics and drones. Along the way we define what a "robot" is, (which is trickier and more subtle than you might imagine). We look at early robots, simple robots from day-to-day life, (i.e., arguably your coffeemaker and certainly your Roomba vacuum cleaner). We consider the differences among a remote controlled toy car, a computer, and a true robot.From there we take a side trip to simple machines of which a robot is constructed, (screw, lever, pulley), and consider automata, (say, the Jacquard loom). This is fairly sophisticated stuff, but it is presented and illustrated clearly. And so it goes - functional components, on-board intelligence, even different levels of programming and language are addressed. Artificial intelligence, robots in popular culture, do-it-yourself robot building, drone racing, "intelligent" houses, Asimov's rules of robotics - the list of topics goes on and on.It seems to me that any kid interested in robots, computers, engineering, drones, and the like would find a lot to like in this book. It is kid friendly, what with cheerful Pouli and its clear narrative, but the book is never patronizing. Some jokey/Dummies-style books can be overloaded with dumb jokes and puns and the like, but this book just has occasional "funny" bits that the reader can take or leave depending on his or her taste.So, this book was instructive, accessible, and entertaining, and covered a topic that you usually don't see that much, (compared to, say, sharks). Well, I'm hooked on Riordan's books, although I prefer the Greek/Roman world to the Egyptian and Norse series. It takes a writer of Riordan's skill to make me interested in following the adventures of Apollo as a human, since he's about the least admirable, most dislikable Olympian in my eyes. Anyway, I enjoyed this, which sets the stage for Apollo's redemption after getting tossed out on his ear, and sets up another new villain for Percy and hopefully, Jason, to join forces with the gods and Save The World - again!

I’m happy about the release of this book, back to Camp Half Blood, and I admit the trip into Norse mythology was fun for a bit, but I’ve grown quite fond of our past protagonists and it was nice to have them back. One thing I would recommend, this book could be read on its own, without reading the others that have come before it, but I wouldn’t. There are some brief summaries of Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, but it talks about the outcome of those events. Also, the book takes place at the start of Riordian’s last book Magnus Chase, and you know that based on what Annabeth is doing, she’s in Boston.The book has Percy for a bit in it, but then it is primarily focused on Apollo and a new demi-god Meg. Like many of Riordian’s past books, the origins of Meg are a bit of a mystery. Uh, I really have to say, there are some hysterical reference in the book that are not entirely based on the knowledge of children in the normal YA range. Shout-out to a Rocky Horror mention! Anyway, the book is enjoyable to read as all the others and is quick.Apollo is on earth as a mortal, the oracles have stopped prophesizing and there are a lot of tie-in’s to other stories that will emerge in the future, in particular Leo. I was worried that Apollo would annoy me, but his arrogance is amusing, and he has some pretty interesting narratives on his fatherhood, especially being proud of his children’s vanity. As a condition of his time on earth he must serve a demi-God, which is an enjoyable paring to read about and the character of Meg is unique and very strong. There’s still more to learn about her background though, which I am excited for in the future.I don’t want to give too much away, but the new threat is a bit different from the past and pertains to historical figures, not simply the Gods and Goddesses in the traditional sense. The entire story is told from Apollo’s perspective and it’s kind of nice to have on-going pop-culture references, even as recent as Alabama Shakes.I highly recommend it! However, wait to read this after you’ve read the other Percy Jackson books!

I am a fan of Riordan. I enjoy how he takes ancient mythology and relates it to the modern world in a way that intrigues young and older minds alike and inspires kids to learn more about ancient histories and civilizations. This first book of the new Apollo series was much anticipated by both myself and my son (age 12). That anticipation may have been a disservice, however, as the story did not quite meet the high expectations. While the Percy Jackson and the subsequent books brought the reader into this mythological cross-section with relatable characters, Apollo falls short of establishing this relationship. He is frequently far too depressed and, for lack of a better description, whines too much in self pity. While I realize this is an internal struggle for Apollo, it is not so dissimilar to the feelings of inadequacy Percy often felt, yet because of better development, the reader was drawn into Percy's feelings rather than just being annoyed by them. It is never a good thing for the reader to find your main character annoying. I did finish the book and I am hoping Apollo's inner whine struggle will abate, or at least be relatable n the future installments. My son did not finish the book. And that is saying something, as he is an avid reader and huge fan. He easily reads two books a week and loves all the Percy Jackson, Olympian, Roman, Egyptian and Nordic books by Riordan. He was greatly disappointed and would probably disagree with my giving the book three stars. However, I stand by the three stars, admitting this is not Riordan's best work, but the research is excellent, the plot moves sufficiently, he did create characters I care about and he did provide adequate conflict, even if the resolutions were sometimes over simplified. It is an okay read if you are patient enough to get past Apollo being a little too Apollo. I do hope the next book is better, but this one does not leave me in a rush to pre-order it.

This is one of the best books I have read. It was great that Rick kept Apollos arrogance but still made him realize that he had faults. I'm going to be real here and say that I was in tears on multiple occasions.It was also great that he decided to let people like Leo and Calypso have the spot light instead of Percy and Annabeth. I was laughing so hard and some parts, I almost fell off the chair I was sitting on.This is a book that you are going to want to read and will keep you on the edge of your toes waiting for the next one.

The story started a little slow but picked up as it went on. Definitely for younger readers and not that long of a read. Builds on the last story which had a little better plot than this one but still worth the read if you liked the first book.

Too much "Harry Potter" kind of stuff. Requires too great,suspension of disbelief. Not nearly up to the Hangman's Daughter series. I do not know to whom I might recommend this yarn.Oliver Potzsch is, nonetheless, an excellent writer.

I gave this a 4-star rating, just because I'm not so much into the "magical" aspect of the story. I love this author's depth in the historical aspects of his stories. I went onto Google Earth to look at the places he referenced and looked into the history of those places. It's stories like his that make me interested enough to look further into the history of what he writes about.

Oliver P. Writes great books, wonderful imafry, excellent characters, great dialogue. Thus book is no exception. A winderful addition to the Black Musketeers series, and I hope the next book is published soon.

I LOVE any books by Oliver Potzsch. He is absolutely my most favorite author. I love how he weaves actual historical facts into a wonderful, hard-to put-down book. The story is a great read and it always amazes me how he can create a very believable, thrilling, suspenseful story around fact. I only wish I could send him a personal note telling him how much I enjoy his work! Thanks Oliver!

I love this author. If you are in the mood for knights in shining armor combined with a dash of magic and a damsel in distress you will like this book.

I'm a big Oliver Poetsch fan. His Hangman daughter series is fantastic. I enjoyed the Black Musketeers and the Sword of Power was okay. I think this one suffered a little in translation and also trying to appeal to a broader audience.

This is well-written young-adult fiction. The context is engaging. This is a good fun-read for adults as well. It is worth the time spent.

Interesting story. I bought all the Amazon books, then started reading the translation at GravityTales and finally read the machine translated version to the end.I enjoyed the story overall, but a few arcs did drag out.The only big downer for me was the ending. I won't spoil it, but it was rather confusing and did not do an effective job of tying everything up for me.It would cost a fortune to get all these books for the entire series if/when it gets fully translated and released, but it could be engaging enough to make that worthwhile, so consider that before starting down the story path.

This is not my first time reading this. I have read the unpublished translated copies from Gravity. I prefer the book version. It is easier to read. Many of the mistaken, were taken care of. It was just better all together. The story itself is great. It you typical change of fate rise to power story. The MC is not instantly super powerful and he still has to work. However he does get a helping hand that changes his fate.

Adjusted to the writer's style, or the translation after a few pages. The story and world building is great and the writer keeps the story fast-paced, never a dull moment. Unlike some authors who feel it's interesting for us poor readers to read chapter after chapter about some "Hero", killing bunnies with a tally sheet appearing before him as he or she grows in power with an amazing amount of SLOW. Ended with a bit of a cliff hanger, nothing silly about the ending as one rater implies. Looking forward to # two.

Story was brilliant and you follow well with the feng but the ending is terrible I couldn't believe it ends like that I'm very sure that the chapter was cut in half for the book to have a end and for the 2nd book to have a carry over straight away instead of a build up or jump in time begining. But rest of the story was good and well written

This guy goes from nobody to top dog real quick! Almost too overpowered if you ask me. Would give this a five star if there more than him always winning, or having everything handed to him. Aside from that it's all good, will buy next book

I am a bit conflicted on this book. It reads like a poor translation of a manga, so it was a bit frustrating to read. The other half of the equation was I ended up being caught up in the story line. Oh well, I will probably buy the next book

The novel in general is good and interesting. It does have some mistakes but in my opinion these errors are not as bad to destroy the story. I hope gravity tales publishes book two of king of gods quickly.

About half of the book are examples and that is where you will learn the most, actually.This isn't just for beginners, I would say that it can be very useful for more experienced in Ruby too. Anybody can refresh their knowledge and brush up on Ruby with this book. I really like it, recommended.
