1. high-powerROCKETSYour finger hovers over the red button, and you move the microphone close to your mouth. You test the public-address system and are relieved to find that it works: When you speak, your voice is clearly heard all over the firing range.Several hundred feet away is the launch pad, and on it stands the culmination of many hundreds of hours of labor and many thousands of dollars of your hard-earned discretionary income. It is your rocket, a 15-foot-tall accurate scale model of an American early 1960s solid-fuel Pershing I nuclear ballistic missile. It is a machine that you designed and built from scratch.Your rocket is loaded with two stages of powerful chemical engines. Like the original Pershing, your motive power comes from two stages of precisely packed chemical fuel arranged in solid form. Each rocket engine is designed such that after it ignites, the gas from the burning chemicals will issue rearward in a high-velocity, high-temperature stream from the ceramic nozzle and propel the rocket up toward the stratosphere. Your rocket will reach empyreal heights, tens of thousands of feet--if all goes well. You pay rigid attention to the preflight checklist. So far, everything looks like a go. There are small indicator lamps on the firing controls that signal launch status, and the ignition lamp shows green. This means that you have a working circuit, and so when the Fire button is pushed, enough current will be sent through the thin metal wire rammed into the motor to heat it red hot and thereby initiate the self-sustaining chemical reaction that occurs within the main motor's combustion chamber. The countdown begins. Ten. Nine. Eight . . . At zero, you push the button and instantly great plumes of white smoke surround the base of the rocket. For a moment, the rocket doesn't move, and you too hold your breath. Then suddenly it leaps toward the sky with neck-jerking acceleration. The noise from the launch comes a split second after you see it leave, and when the noise does come, it is nearly deafening. The rocket climbs 100, 200, 500, 1,000 feet, its speed escalating logarithmically as it ascends. It climbs and climbs, and it becomes difficult, then nearly impossible, and then totally impossible to see the rocket itself, although the smoke and nozzle fire remain visible.Everyone congratulates you on a successful launch. There is applause and backslapping, high fives all around. But the celebration is cut short by the sound of the range safety officer's warning horn: Whoop! Whoop! Whoop! The RSO's voice is plainly heard over the public-address system. "Attention! Look up! Look up! We have a rocket coming in hot!" This is not good for you. This is not good for anybody. In fact, this is trouble with a capital T.What has happened is this: your rocket has two stages. The first stage consists of several large chemical rocket engines that lift the entire rocket for the initial or "booster" phase of the flight. When expended, the booster rocket falls away, and a second engine, mounted above it, is supposed to automatically ignite and continue powering the remaining components upward. But the second stage, powered by its own very large engine, has ignited later than it was supposed to. In fact, it ignited after the rocket reached apogee and had already turned and begun to head back to earth. So the engine is not powering the rocket to fly up higher. Your rocket is being driven back down to earth not only by gravity, but also by the second-stage engine. There is a real danger that the rocket will reach the ground and your launch area before this engine is burned out and triggers the timed ejection charge that deploys the recovery parachutes. The current situation is this: There is a very large and heavy rocket coming your way on an unpredictable descent path, and not just in free fall, but pushed by the thrust of a high-impulse, high-velocity, solid-fuel rocket engine.>>>This is LDRS, the country's--and probably the world's--largest annual gathering of high-power amateur rocket enthusiasts. From all over the world, eager rocketeers come for a long weekend's worth of home-brewed acceleration and conversations about rocketry.LDRS is an acronym for Large Dangerous Rocket Ships. It's the place where the people who started out as boys and girls experimenting with Estes and Centuri model rockets go when they want to build really, really big rockets of their own.LDRS is sponsored by a group called Tripoli, which is the largest organization of high-power rocket makers. There are scores of local chapters or "prefects" in locations across the world. This year, Tripoli has chosen the Panhandle of Texas Rocketry Prefect to host the big event. The local leadership has been busy for months turning a large patch of cow pasture into the nation's most active rocket launching area.Rocketeers both need and love wide-open spaces--the wider the better. Amateur rocket builders, especially those who specialize in building the largest and most powerful rockets, want only a couple of things: a lot of flat, open, unpopulated land in which to recover their rockets after flight, and clear, sunny skies. This makes places such as Texas, Kansas, and the Canadian prairie provinces ideal spots for LDRS gatherings. The launch site is south of Amarillo, straight down the Interstate to the tiny hamlet of Happy, Texas. At that point, the route to LDRS follows Texas Ranch Road 287 east, a long, straight, and uncrowded chunk of pavement that goes through territory so flat you can practically see the curvature of the earth. At the end of the long drive is the LDRS launch site, a sprawling temporary compound of tents, launch pads, electronics, and people. The level, open venue is perfect for facilitating the retrieval of the hundreds of rockets that will eventually drift back to earth during the event, attached by elastic shock cords to large white parachutes. This particular site has the additional and highly valued quality of being well outside all commercial air lanes, so the airspace above it has no scheduled flights. Even so, the Tripoli organizers had to apply for a certificate of special clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing very-high-altitude rocket flights during the three days of the event.Central Texas can be brutally hot and bright in July, and the tents and E-Z Ups set up by the rocketeers and vendors provide the only shade. This meet has the air of a large crafts fair, except that the vendor booths contain recovery chutes, rocket engine casings, altimeters, and launch towers instead of decorated ceramic pots and fabric wall hangings. The east side of the area is dominated by rows and rows of missile launching pads.In this heat, people are not inclined to exert themselves if they can help it, so most simply wander around the dusty field, working on their projects, talking to one another, and pointing. Spectators at a large-scale high-power rocket launch do a lot of pointing--always toward the sky, arms extended at about 70 degrees to the horizon. Their fingers trace out the rocket's acceleration skyward and then fall back down to their sides as they watch it float down on the end of a parachute or two.Temperature notwithstanding, for a few days the formerly sleepy area becomes an energetic beehive of activity: smoke plumes and contrails constantly hanging like puffy ropes over the ranch, rockets roaring up, then silently floating down. The great number of participants keeps several launching pads active. The pads with the biggest rockets are placed the farthest away from people, for it is not unusual for a rocket to blow up, or in rocket lingo, "CATO," on the pad, producing a shrapnel rainstorm.*On the afternoon of the second day, a really big rocket, two and a half stories tall, stands erect on the far launch pad. It is a gracefully proportioned and aerodynamically shaped rocket and it is beautiful, at least to a high-power rocket enthusiast. Spectators and rocketeers alike press toward the safety fence to get into position for the best view. This is the Athos II rocket, built by the Gates brothers of California. Athos II is a very large rocket with high-specific-impulse engines and will likely attain great heights. This launch is obviously going to involve significant velocity, complexity, and power. Athos's launch has been anticipated for quite some time, so the crowd near the safety fence is thick. People reach for their binoculars and position their cameras on tripods. Over the facility's loudspeaker, the launch control officer begins the countdown for one of the highlights of LDRS-21.THE TECHNOLOGY OFHIGH-POWER AMATEUR ROCKETRYIn the typical solid-fuel rocket, the rocket maker builds a fiberglass shell that houses the motor, the recovery system, and whatever sensors, cameras, or other payload is placed within.* But the bulk of the rocket's weight is contained in its powerful chemical engines. In and of themselves, rocket engines are marvelous things. Their most basic form goes back to first-millennium China, when crude black powder was stuffed into bamboo rockets and used to frighten the enemy's horses. A simple rocket engine is straightforward and easy to understand. There is chemical propellant packed inside a metal casing. The chemicals inside the motor burn, and as they do so, hot, expanding gas is produced. This gas rushes out the back of the motor through a nozzle and, as described in Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion, the backward gush of the gas results in an equal and opposite forward thrust of the rocket body. Simple, yes. But hey, this is rocket science, and things get complicated quickly.Small, commercially available model rocket motors consist of black-powder propellant pressed under tons of pressure into a hard, dense matrix called "grain." When the grain is ignited, the motor starts burning linearly, like a very fast-burning cigarette, from its back to its front. As it does so, it pushes hot gas out through a clay nozzle, and the rocket zips forward until the propellant is all burned up.The world of high-power rocketry is different and much more complicated. Instead of using a simple black-powder chemical rocket motor, the experienced flyers most often use engines made out of "composite propellant"--a combination of an oxidizer chemical such as ammonium perchlorate (AP) and a synthetic rubber binder material to hold the oxidizer in a desired shape and provide fuel. In addition, the rocket engine maker may mix in plasticizers, catalysts, and crosslinkers, all of which can make the propellant burn stronger, longer, slower, or hotter, depending on the goals of the rocket designer. Composite motors are formed into various shapes with voids and holes precisely designed into the motor in order to shape the direction and velocity of the exiting gas. Such complex contours and figures are complicated to fabricate, requiring great quantities of heating, molding, curing, machining, and, above all, attention to detail. The most extreme rocket makers spend days on end experimenting with rocket designs and motor formulations. There are so many variables that the maker can adjust to affect the performance of the rocket. A quick list of their concerns includes the shape of the rocket body, fin design, the shape of the nozzle, the geometry of the motor's core, the combination of various chemicals that make up the propellant mixture, the rate of burn, and the ignition method. It takes a lot of scientific, mechanical, and seemingly alchemical knowledge to become a really good rocket maker. There is also an element of danger working with toxic and flammable chemicals such as ammonium perchlorate, potassium nitrate, and liquid oxygen.*> > >What rocket makers care about most is the physics quantity called "total impulse." Total impulse is the product of the force acting on a rocket (the thrust) multiplied by the amount of time the thrust is applied. Expressed mathematically, it is:Total Impulse = Average Thrust ´ Burn TimeAn engine that applies a lot of thrust, for a long period of time, is a high-performance engine. To a rocket engine maker, the goal is lots and lots of impulse. The size of a rocket motor and the amount of total impulse it produces are described by assigning the motor a letter of the alphabet. The smallest rocket motor is an A and is commonly sold in hobby stores without need for a permit. The B motor is twice as big as an A, and a C is twice as big as a B. Each increase in letter size denotes a doubling of the engine's rocket-lifting ability, or total impulse. The total impulse of an A-motor is about 2.5 newton-seconds (N-s), which is enough to lift a small rocket a few hundred feet. A B-motor provides 5 N-s, C-motors provide 10 N-s, and so on. The largest commercially produced rocket motor available to certified amateur flyers, the mammoth N motor, provides a muscular 41,000 N-s. Custom engines are available from a number of boutique rocket engine designers. Some of these go into the O and P range and even beyond. They are large and energetic enough to power a half-ton rocket to jet-fighter altitudes. (Using this scale, the NASA space shuttle's 8.3 million Newton-second booster rockets are about two letters beyond a Z-motor.)Although there are many variations in the design and construction of homemade rocket engines, one of the clearest differentiating factors is the type of chemicals used to provide the energy and hence the impulse. The two most common general categories of chemicals are those involving variations of black powder and those that use composite propellant. Composite engines are, pound for pound, significantly more powerful than black-powder engines, that is, they have a higher specific impulse.Every rocket engine, from black powder to solid fuel composite to liquid fuel to hybrid systems, works in similar fashion and is subject to the same basic physical laws: The propellant is ignited. It burns. Hot and expanding gases are produced and then stream out of a nozzle. Thrust is produced and the rocket and whatever is attached to it goes forward.*The force produced by the gas issuing out of the nozzle is called "momentum thrust." Imagine that a rocket engine builder constructs an engine with a burn rate of 10 pounds of fuel per second. Now further assume that the builder's rocket engine handbook tells him that his choice of rocket fuels will result in the gases leaving the rocket nozzle at a velocity of around 3,000 feet per second. The thrust produced is equal to the propellant burn rate multiplied by the exhaust velocity. So the momentum thrust is:Momentum Thrust = Propellant Burn Rate ´ Exhaust Gas VelocitySo, in the example above,Thrust = (10 lbs/sec) ´ (3,000 ft/sec)/(32.2 ft/sec2)*Momentum Thrust = 932 pounds of forceSo far, so good. But momentum thrust is only part of the reason rockets go up. The other reason is pressure thrust.Inside a rocket engine, there are unbalanced forces at work. The rocket engine has an open end (the nozzle where the gases come out) and a closed end. During the burn time, the combustion of rocket engine chemicals results in a pressure buildup inside the engine. But since one end is closed and one end is open through the exit nozzle, there is a net force pushing against the closed end.

First, this book is not something you can let your kids read unsupervised--> There is a section on some seriously questionable behavior at the burning man ("Camp Pump" and vacuum enhancement). I guess that is why I am giving it a couple of stars less than max. Although the book can function as light reading for an adult, I was hoping to give it to my kids. Also "Camp Pump" didn't really add anything to the book for me, and could have been omitted. I am not a prude, its just that I don't consider those 5 pages to be that relevant to the technology underground. I would have rather seen a section on land speed records, or computer piloted land vehicles. The reason that I wanted to give it to my kids is because the book is written at the 'primer' level in regards to the topics is covers. The diagrams are great for the middle school level, and the writing is also 5th-9th grade or so. Most of the material in the book can be found on the web (in more depth), but the book is a nice way to bring a bunch of the topics together and relate them as components in the technology underground. Not to mention that, on the web, the more 'fringy' the website, the more likely it will be that there are links leading to places you don't want your kid going. On the other hand, I want my kids to be excited about science and technology, to feel like there is some fun stuff there, instead of just endless number crunching. This book would certainly generate the interest and 'how do I' questions that lead to true learning. I feel as if school in the US is getting increasingly watered down and topics that have some of the most interest to kids ( topics that are the "coolest") are strangled due to the focus on political correctness. Even science fairs seem to be super-carefully controlled to over-emphasize safety and stay 'in the box'.There is a section on pulse jets squarely in the middle of the 'Camp Pump' section, so it may be hard to take a sharpie to the book and 'redact' the material I am less-then-thrilled-with and leave the pulse jets intact. I will probably try that and let my kids have a look at it afterwards.

I found this book on a shelf in my high school library half a decade ago, and it inspired me to become the engineer I am today. I'm buying a copy now out of nostalgia. When you read the negative reviews about this book I urge you to consider the average intelligence of the lay person today and why they are dissatisfied... People should READ the title! The cover says "adventure" and not "instruction," since most 3 syllable words perplex folks these days..."rumination" is defined as a deep thought(as in the author's inner most thoughts on the tech). If someone expected there to be detailed schematics with specific build instructions...they're horribly wrong(they should use what brain power they do have and realize the legal/liability issues). This book was meant to inspire, and it'll likely do so with an intellectual whom has an interest and open mind.

I've enjoyed all of William Gurstelle's books so far and ordered "Adventures from the Technology Underground" as soon as it popped up on my radar. In the last week I've read the book a couple of times and give it a hearty recommendation. In a society that is frequently more and more out of touch with an enterprising spirit of scientific exploration this book makes it clear that all is not lost yet. (Who would have guessed that the Virginia Military Institute may be the foremost seat of siege warfare in the modern world?) It's best to sum this up as a celebration of ingenuity, curiosity and the limitless imagination of the human mind.I agree that some of the topics in the book aren't for the youngest of the curious and scientific but the book certainly isn't aimed at a younger audience. This is more of an introduction to topics that may or may not have crossed the path of the casual reader, not the hardcore enthusiast. With handy links and references the truly curious will easily be able to follow up on what the book offers. The mildly entertained will simply "wow" their friends at the next neighborhood block picnic or office water cooler round up.A great book by any practical measure.

I really wanted to like this book, but it's written in such a simplistic and unfocused way as to leave me very disappointed. The author barely scratches the surface of the many technologies/projects/events he covers, and I always felt cheated after finishing each chapter... thinking "That's IT?!"Underground tech IS a very cool subject to write about, but the lack of information about the inner motivations and passions of these "garage warriors" leaves a glaring hole in the text. If you have a short attention span and hate to read long books, this book is easily absorbed in a few hours. This is NOT a deep exposition on underground tech; it is a quick overview for newbies. Considering that the audience for this subject would be (I assume) more literate that the national average, it's a shame that the writing seems to be limited to what a sixth-grader could easily digest.I notice now that the price has now dropped to 10 bucks. At that price, it's more in line with the quantity/quantity of content provided, and could now be considered an "okay" value... just don't set your expectations too high. I know this was a fairly harsh review, but I really was disappointed that the amateurish quality of the writing didn't live up to the slick cover design. Don't judge a book by it's cover!

If you're interested in information about "Catapults, Pulsejets, Rail Guns..." just Google the word, and you'll get far more information than this book contains...even in its "The technology of..." sections. If your current technology knowledge base doesn't exceed what is contained in this book, you've been living under a rock.So what's in this book? Stories of people who had their rockets explode upon takeoff, who lost their fingers building contraptions, and a gratuitous section on how a penis pump works. Wow. What a technology adventure. Why was this book written? In hopes of having schleps part with their money. Don't.

What a wonderful book! I’ve never read anything quite like it, although it reminded me quite a bit of various Hayao Miyazaki animated films I’ve seen in the past. “Totto-chan” is a memoir in the guise of a novel. The author’s childhood self is the main character and the events described actually took place while she attended a creative school called Tomoe Gakuen in pre-war Tokyo. This proves to be an interesting narrative device because the story is told from the emotional and experiential point of view of a child, but with the knowingness and articulateness of an adult. The obvious fondness or at least understanding of the author toward her younger self serves to enhance the overall sensation of empathy the story engenders, for that is the primary theme of the school and what the children were learning there.Led by the visionary headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi, the Tomoe school’s philosophy is built on trusting children to be themselves, “let nature lead” as Kobayashi put it. The story is filled with anecdotes of Totto-chan and her classmates being entrusted to figure things out for themselves, with adults and authority figures like the headmaster and parents simply listening and providing confidence that the children will succeed in coming up with workable solutions as they learn to navigate the world around them. Mistakes and slipups (such as Totto-chan falling into the school’s cesspool) are treated with dignity and patience. Instruction and structure come in the form of simple guidelines (for lunch, students were asked to bring “something from the hills and something from the sea”) with the belief that the children will be motivated to find their own solution with a limited amount of information. The effect on the children is a unique sensation of freedom and capability, of openness and consideration of themselves and the needs of others. Seemingly without encouragement, the school spontaneously forms a meaningful, interested sense of community and ownership by the students toward their school grounds, neighborhood and classmates. Left to pursue their studies and interests at their own pace, some students excel through deep study and careful focus of a particular subject while others enjoy sampling disparate bits of knowledge and experience without a plan. All students appear happy and enthusiastic about their lives, even those students who come to the school with severe developmental handicaps. As the author says, this liberty allowed a lot of children who were misfits in the standard schooling regime to find a sense of ease and belonging and to go on to live productive, independent and connected lives as adults. The story gives the reader a glimpse of an educational philosophy and pedagogical approach that is at once intuitive and mysterious: why shouldn’t every school demonstrate such empathy and concern for its students; and how DOES Mr. Kobayashi manage to have such patience and a sunny disposition toward the antics of small children that are considered so “obnoxious” by nearly everybody else? The epilogue of the story summarizes some of the research travel Kobayashi performed in Europe for several years leading up to the founding of the Tomoe school and it becomes clear that there is a dedicated, principled purposefulness to every single event in the story, which the author as an adult reflects upon in the present with a “Oh, so THAT must have been what Mr. Koboyashi was trying to teach us there…” To a cynical mind it may seem almost exploitative to be so cunning in one’s schemes, but if the ultimate goal of the approach is to develop in the students the maxim “Trust yourself”, how nefarious could this stratagem actually be?The school seems like a very “social” place and less like an academy– numerous field trips, “sports” days, music and exercise classes and camping overnights pepper the plot and while there is a library and scenes of students doing self-directed physics studies with alcohol burners and beakers, they always take place in Tomoe’s disused railroad cars-cum-classrooms. It’s a challenge only to those readers with a constricted view of what education and learning necessarily mean. For Kobayashi and his students, every experience brings teachable moments and the question begged and answered is why reading about flora and fauna in a textbook is a superior approach when one can go outside for a walk and study the variety of life up close. From the view of paranoid American parenting, the children disrobing with their teachers and swimming naked together in the school’s small pool will seem like a perfect opportunity for secret child abusers amongst the faculty to get their jollies. But the lesson here seems to be that every choice in life brings with it risks and if bathing suit-less swim time is a useful means for helping the children (especially the physically handicapped) to appreciate and accept their differences and similarities such that they can have confidence about who they are and act with kindness towards everyone else, the risk of something monstrous or mean-spirited in such an environment might be a better risk to take than watching certain individuals grow up feeling alienated from themselves and others for lack of such experiences.Indeed, those same paranoid parents would be wondering how a child could ever develop a moral sense without correction and punishment from adults. It is enjoyable, then, to witness the many moments when Totto-chan attempts to do something underhanded or less than honest (with herself, her parents or her friends) but recognizes the moral inconsistency of her actions on her own and eventually makes amends and moves on. It makes you think that children are capable of so much more than they are given credit for, typically, and that maybe the moral failings of children reflect not their immaturity, but the perverse incentives of the adults who guide them. This is a humorous book, as well. There were many moments when I couldn’t help but laugh out loud and recount a passage to someone nearby, they’re just too good not to share. And thankfully, there are moments of profound tragedy and despair. I say thankfully, because it is in these recollections that we are truly reminded of how precious life is and what a wonderful gift a school like Tomoe is.One of those tragedies is that the Tomoe school burned to the ground near the finale of the Pacific War as Tokyo came under increased firebombing by the US Air Force. It’s a stark reminder of the injudiciousness and unfairness of war, even though it is recounted without particular frustration or anger on the part of the author (a testament to the empathetic spirit of the school itself!) But there is also a lesson in the resilience of the creative spirit, as Kobayashi’s only response is to ask, “What kind of school shall we build next?”The good news is that we don’t have to suffer war or burn our schools down to ask that question ourselves.I think this book can be enjoyed by children, parents, families, teachers and social theorists and anyone concerned with building a more empathetic society built upon respect for the individual and the instinct of trusting oneself.5/5

Every time that I think I am finished with the topic of World War II (depressing, done to death), another book of movie comes along. This is the story of a young girl in Japan who attends an alternative school until it is forced to close due to the war. This is a children's chapter book, therefore an easy read for an adult, yet quite touching. Although it describes the war, it is appropriate for young readers. I would not have known about this book if someone in my book club had not chosen it. One thing I did not know until the end is that this book is based on the author's real experience.Teachers will like this book. It brings up an interesting point about education. Totto-chan is unsuccessful in her first school and is expelled. She thrives at the alternative school; I would surmise that schools such as this one were and are very rare in Japan. Totto-chan most certainly would be diagnosed as ADHD if she were to enroll in an American school today, yet she is delightful.

I purchased this book at the suggestion of some reading list. I found the story inspiring because in my former life I was a substitute teacher and that experience taught me that I have no business being around kids and two every kid learns differently and have passions about a subject that unfortunately the local public school I used to sub at doesn't allow freedom like that. It's a miracle if they even get decent books. But it opened my eyes and made me think about the state of education and how some kids just don't conform to standards. Well I don't have much to add but please purchase this book.

This book is the only book that I will recommend for anyone to read and re-read all over again. From time to time, perception towards something changes us. Whenever that happened and I will re-read it again, I find myself understand the child's mind even better. It is astonishing to realize such unique child education structure exists in Japan back in World War II. It is an impressive system to allow the child to grow without constraining their development and over conditions them. This book allow you to walk through a journey from the eye of a child. The overview concept of education system and why each child is unique of their own.Anyone should read this regardless if you're a new parent, an early childhood educator or someone who just enjoy having new perspective.

A delightful look into a different manner of education, so unlike what is common today. In addition to this fresh view of enjoyable learning, the book also allows a gentle peak into the world of a young Japanese girl during WW II. Don't skip the wonderful musings of the author in the Epilogue which sheds further light on the historical significance of this book, as well as lets the reader in on "Whatever happened to..." A worthwhile and enjoyable read for the young to the oldest.

A simple yet brilliant story that is very quiet and humble about the revolutionary power contained within. If more schools adopted some of the teaching policies within this book, I suspect our education system would become much more natural and human. Schools should adapt themselves to the needs of a child. Children should not have to adapt to the needs of the school.

Tetsuko is famous in Japan for her television shows. A couple of weeks ago I saw her on an old Johnny Carson rerun. She was very interesting and funny. She mentioned the book. I was happy to find it on Amazon. The book is a story about a little girl in the first grade in Japan. The little girl is actually Tetsuko herself and these are her memories.

The Book of Freedom (Mastery Trilogy/Paul Selig Series), by Paul Selig

Review

“The words spoken through Paul Selig in the Book of Freedom ring as true as any that have ever been written. Like a steady drumbeat drawing us toward our soul’s highest potential, this book is the crown jewel of the mastery trilogy—the most important spiritual work of our time. The message continues to unfold in a way that is deeply impactful for both a first time reader, or a long time follower of Paul’s work. The Book of Freedom has profoundly influenced my life and I am honored to help shout from the rooftops, ’we are free, we are free, we are free!’”—Aubrey Marcus, founder and CEO of Onnit, New York Times bestselling author of Own the Day, Own Your Life   “If you have not yet encountered the channeled teachings of Paul Selig, you are in for a treat. Rarely does one encounter spiritual teachings of such directness, lucidity, and relevance. In a world where there are many claims of higher consciousness and psychic insight, Paul is a profound and authentic voice. The teachings of the Guides ring true again and again. If you already know something of these teachings, you will find here a new wealth of insight into the stages of self-understanding that make it possible to live more fully from our awake and compassionate core. The Book of Freedom is a powerful manual on how to ‘walk the talk’ of authentic spiritual teaching—integrating our spiritual selves with our lived human lives. This a very welcome addition to the literature of work on consciousness.”—Russ Hudson, co-author of The Wisdom of the Enneagram   "The Book of Freedom calls us all into the same kingdom of heaven Jesus announced two thousand years ago—experienced through a radical shift in perception beyond the known world of judgment and prescription into the resonance of divinity in all. Finding freedom from the prisons that hold us captive to fear and unworthiness is like being re-born into a whole new world at the cost of everything we think about ourselves and the nature of reality. This awakening is the only journey that ultimately matters, and the Book of Freedom is a trumpet that guides us home. May we all have ears to hear the song of freedom sung to us in this beautiful offering of love."—Ted Dekker, New York Times bestselling author of Rise of the Mystics  Praise for the Mastery Trilogy "Paul's messages arrive from a consortium of unseen ‘Guides’ whose voices are deeply ethical, penetratingly insightful regarding the foibles of human nature, and unsparingly blunt about the possibilities and pitfalls facing us in the present era.  As an intellect, Paul, too, possesses these qualities and serves as a fine instrument—a kind of Stradivarius of the soul—through which the Guides can play their notes."—Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America, One Simple Idea and The Miracle Club

Please know that I am a former scientist trained at a national lab. I state that only because it might help you comprehend how mind blowing it is to an empirical, evidence based truth seeker to witness “external” things that are not supposed to be possible. At this point I am only part way through this text (experiencing it as an Audiobook, as read by Paul), though I have taken them all in from the very start. My initial decision to explore this material was based on observing many others who were stating similarly powerful phenomena (though generally “internal”) when they did the same. I am going to keep this semi-short and vague, for a very good reason: something remarkable, phenomenal, external, and beyond the known laws of physics (as they are normally understood) happened/was witnessed by my sons and I this evening while listening to this book on our drive home. I am sure not going to share it here, but suffice it to say that similar events (though less "impossible", according to conventional physics) have been occurring with each of these texts. All I can say is that if there is any doubt in your mind about the potential authenticity of Paul and the guides, and what Paul is so graciously continuing to show up for and deliver (& take a look at his travel schedule, then ask yourself if you could keep that up)-- simply try the scientific empirical/experiential approach and give them a read/listen (from the start, and don't skip around--i.e. follow the process in the way it is supposed to be taken in, if you truly want to see if it works). Talk about renewing one's faith. Although to be fair, when the things take place that I (and my sons) have observed, 'know' is a more appropriate term than 'faith'. The magnificent inner process that seems to be building within me as a result of exposure to these transformational texts is likely just the tip of the…’loveberg’? Sorry, but I am essentially at a loss for words…don’t take my or anyone’s admonishment about this, you MUST see for yourself. Feeling brave? Then be exposed to that which lifts beyond the realm of idealizations and into the space of direct experience and knowing. My outlook on life just raised several octaves. Grateful is an understatement. This is NOT TO BE MISSED!!! Fear will no longer dominate the seas of many inner oceans, it has been struck by something titanic, undeniable. BRAVO!!! MERCI!!! Words can not convey the wonder that has been birthed after what felt like lifetimes of rigorous but disappointing investigation. In a world exhausted by let-downs and failed pursuits, this pearl has been received at last, and we are lucky beyond belief. This WORD is our oyster friends. We deserve it & I hope many more come to know that. This 'book' is portal of living, liberating Truth, and it seems that some things are NOT 'too good to be true'. My heart is singing. Let Freedom ring.

This was easily the best of the trilogy... which I didn't think was possible considering how good the last books were.I had the pleasure of getting my question answered during his book release live stream, which solidified for me, the realness and authenticity of his gifts as a channeler. Despite being blown away by each one of his books, I'd still remained slightly skeptical about his abilities up until that point. The fact that Paul chose me randomly, and answered my question the way he did, was the exact experience I needed to verify that he is indeed the real deal.I initially believed myself to be "above" these types of books. I read all the time. "Why should I listen to some crazy channeler?!" I'd say to myself. Boy was I wrong. Out of my library of over 100+ books, I consider Paul's series to be the most important books I've ever read. Each book brings profound, yet simple teachings that are both timeless and applicable to all people. Even if you consider yourself to be atheist or skeptical of psychics, I can guarantee you that these books will still provide you with a well needed change in perspective.Paul, if you ever read this, words cannot describe the amount of gratitude I have for you. the Guides, and your work. It's truly been a blessing to experience. Thank you for all that you do. You've allowed me to climb out of the pit I was once in. You've allowed me to see the world in a new light. Thank you.

Somehow it happened a long time ago: we lost our True identity and became adepts of FEAR.Generation after generation we were teaching our children, what we believed ourselfs, that they are nothing more than small and FEARful beings. And so, no one tried to rise their head and look beyond that. We were living under the rule of collective social consciousness that was based on FEAR and separation.Like in prison(of our understandings), or like slaves of FEAR.Its time now to get free and to remember our True identity. To start a new era. We are Divine beings. We are of LOVE.We are free. We are free. We are free.Get on the boat! Read this book! But if you are new to this teaching - start from the previous ones, start from "I AM the Word".Share this with others. You are free. You are free. You are free.

The evolution of human consciousness is the most interesting subject in the world to me and my reading list has always been replete with works relating to spirituality, evolution, human potential, mental health and hygiene, etc. The Course In Miracles has long held the "most important book on my shelf" distinction, but this one just hit the reset button in a big way. ACIM was hard to read, but when you got there it's good stuff. This book just mainlines the good stuff into your psyche straightaway. I've read all 5 other of Mr. Selig's work, and that could be why it resonates so powerfully, but if you have any intention of contributing to the upliftment of humanity, this is the book to read now, next and probably dozens of times...

The Progression of Teachings from The Guides is the most relevant and significant thing that will ever happen to you . I FIRMLY suggest you start with Book One, I Am the Word, and read one "day" at a time and really apply and take in the teachings and attunements. Don't rush and skip. It is Life Changing.

I nearly finish reading the John MacCornick book and I must say it is an excellent written book. Everyone could recommends or excludes some of the algorithms that he describes --values are choices, they aren't properties of the algorithm themselves-- but no one could say that any of them are worthless or with no impact in actual computational systems. The author style approach readers with a moderate level of understanding in computation. That said to remark my astonishing look reading to some Computer Science professional reviewers alleging difficulties understand it. Even to an experience programmer as myself, this book is an enjoyable journey through one of the most fascinating and essential areas of Computer Science: algorithms.(Let me qualify myself. I'm an IT consultant with over 15 years of experience. I have two Microsoft certifications (MCDBA and MCSD, both VB6 and .NET), and a Master degree in Information Science. The discovery, invention and application of algorithms in Object-oriented programs with a dense use of design patterns is one of my lines of investigations.)

An algorithm is a well defined procedure for performing a task. A household example of an algorithm is a recipe -- for example, the list of ingredients together with the sequence of instructions needed to bake a pie. In order for a computer to perform a task, it needs ingredients -- the data -- and instructions -- the algorithm.Author John MacCormick, currently Professor of Computer Science at Dickinson College, has chosen nine important tasks performed by computers and explained the algorithms that are used. In a chapter devoted to each, he explains:* The development of search engines -- how to find information on the internet.* The PageRank process used by Google to produce highly relevant search results.* Public-key cryptography, enabling secure transmission of secret messages -- such as your credit card number -- over open communication channels.* Methods for detecting errors in data transmission and automatically correcting them.* Several pattern recognition techniques, illustrated by classifying handwritten numbers, facial recognition, and decision trees.* Data compression. Storing text, music, and images efficiently.* Databases. Storing and retrieving information efficiently. Techniques for modifying databases reliably, even when computers crash while the modification is in progress.* Digital signatures. How to be certain data is trustworthy.* Deciding what is computable.Even though the techniques that enable these algorithms are complex, Dr. MacCormick explains them in a clear and interesting manner using well constructed examples.I highly recommend this book for a fascinating and easily accessible look at the core of computer science and its application to everyday lives.

If you are already an Expert in any of the 9 Areas explored here. then this is probably not for you. For those who complain that more interesting algorithms are not discussed - the Author does an excellent job explaining his rationale for what he includes and excludes (and I agree with his thesis - it would be hard for me to explain how recursion or shell short changed the world, But public key encryption - not a problem). This explains the fundamental concepts and it does it in a clear way requiring no advanced mathematics etc. and for that I appreciate and applaud this book. I Have read Other explanations of these topic sand have not come aware with a clear an understanding as I obtained from reading this slim Volume. Many authors seem to be obsessed with showing you how clever they are and how well they understand a topic - rather than help you reach the same level of understanding. For this reason I would rate this Volume as Excellent.

I'm a computational biologist and a self-taught programmer, meaning that I'm always looking to improve my knowledge and understanding of computer science (CS) and how to apply it to my research. This book is a great introduction to general algorithms, although I've already encountered most of them in my studies, and the language is a bit too simple for my background. With that being said, I think it's really good for those who are either complete CS newbies, or those who are marginally interested in how the world of computers works without wanting to delve into technical language. I certainly would have gotten interested in CS long before I did if I had read this before college!

An excellent choice of algorithm that made great part of the word that we now live in. The book tries to present these ideas without assuming any programming or mathematical knowledge on part of the reader. As is to be expected, this becomes a bit awkward in the case of asymetric criptography but succeeds amazingly well in other cases. I am using this book for developing an introductory class for computer science and I am very satisfied with the book, because it gives me the material to explain what computer science really is instead of having me dig through the papers myself. The author chose to concentrate just on the algorithms and not on the economiceco-system in which software lives, so there is no real explanation why Altavista did not survive in the top three search engines, forexample. Considering on your view, this is a feature, not a bug. For the general reader, this book suffers from all the advantages and shortcomings of books that try to explain a feature of a science to people without the necessary aparatus. I remember reading a book by - I think - Dirac on quantum physics in high school and not making to much out of it, but as far as the genre goes, this is a really good book.

Pro: Decent quality, text is legible IMO, design is goodCon: While I didn’t expect this set to include all (CR 0-5) monsters from every supplement I did expect all the 5e (CR 0-5) monsters from the 5e Monster Manual to be included. You have to manually search for deck to see ones that the set includes too since there’s no “included monster” list either.

I absolutely love these and they make it so much easier to run the game at the table without having to have the monster manual or an app open. Each card shows all the stats found for each Monster Manual entry, with some of the stats simplified to fit on the cards (for example, only modifiers---not ability scores---are shown. My biggest complaint is the lack of animal cards, which would be super useful for druids, and NPCs like commoners, thugs, veterans, etc. There are also some cards missing, such as dragon wyrmlings and unicorns, inexplicably.Keep in mind when you buy these that they aren't all normal card sizes. Some are wider to fit all the information explained on them.

I love the idea and execution. I am disappointed with how many monsters/creatures/NPCs are missing. It's also frustrating to have the cards be different sizes. Makes it difficult to alphabetize them together rather than in two separate stacks.

These are high quality like the spell cards. The only reason I cannot give them 5 stars is because of the way I wanted to store them. The monsters that have more information of course come on bigger cards that don't fit in collector card sleeves pages, which is how I prefer to store the cards. (I understand the size difference is neccessary).

The card quality of the product is good and very useful for sessions. However, the cards are missing everything in the appendix of the monster manual. This includes many of the beasts and humans. Disappointing that some of the most used creatures are not included.

a great thing to have for in person play but limited to the base game. Items in campaigns are not included. Images are limited too.

Colorful and useful for gaming

Very happy with them, love all the cards you do. Please do a beast collection next! This is the perfect gift for any DM that uses classical monsters.
