Before Buddha Was Buddha: Learning from the Jataka Tales, by Rafe Martin

Review

“Storyteller and Zen teacher, Rafe Martin, offers a fresh set of stories to contemplate – and what stories they are! These amazing old tales enter the heart directly and prepare our minds for the wisdom of the author’s contemporary commentary. His deeply felt connection to these ancient Buddhist tales enhances his message to all of us, and integrates traditional teachings with our lives today. Before Buddha Was Buddha is a pleasure to read. Plus a close reading reveals not only wise teachings but also valuable insights into ancient metaphors and symbols.” (Pat Enkyo O’Hara Roshi, Abbot of the Village Zendo NYC, Founding Teacher of the Zen Peacemaker Family)“Before Buddha Was Buddha is a most welcome addition to contemporary Zen Tradition – Zen in the Art of the Jatakas! It offers us a source of inspiration and courage when we must face the “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,” seeing them not as interruptions or obstacles, but as the Way itself. With this book, Rafe Martin has made it possible for us to go directly to the Big Boss, (the Buddha himself), before his supreme awakening, and learn how he, too, struggled to find his way when he was swamped by the “the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.” An excellent and most useful book!" (Danan Henry Roshi, Founding Teacher, Zen Center of Denver)"Before Buddha Was Buddha is clearly the result of decades of practice and insight. Written by a very mature teacher, it can help spiritual practitioners deepen their understanding of the nature of Mind. As a lifelong student of Zen Buddhism, I am personally impressed and inspired by it!" (Hogen Bays Roshi, Co-Abbot Great Vow Zen Monastery and Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple Portland, Oregon)“As a teacher of Eastern philosophy to diverse students, I’ve struggled with how to present the abstract, challenging, and sometimes counter-intuitive concepts that Buddhism presents in a way that brings them to life in a classroom. Karma, impermanence, dependent co-arising and the rest, can feel colorless without narratives to ground them. Rafe Martin’s illuminating, thoughtful, and inspiring new book on the wisdom of the ancient Jataka tales does just that: reveals how the core ideas of Buddhism actually play out in the realities of our lives. This is just the book my students need to put flesh on the Buddhist bones. I recommend it enthusiastically!” (Dr. Abigail Levin, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Niagara University)"This is a delightful book—read it for the stories as well as the gift of life it presents. Rafe Martin reveals a way of play as well as fully exploring the deepest corners of our human hearts."  (James Ishmael Ford, author of Introduction to Zen Koans)“The Long Maturation, in which we align our behavior, speech and thought with what we realize in our ongoing Zen practice, is a vital yet so often ignored aspect of that practice. With Before Buddha Was Buddha, Rafe Martín Sensei gives us rare and valuable guidance in this process, using the examples of the Buddha’s previous lives as told through the Jataka Tales. An important book for anyone doing spiritual training!”   (Mitra Bishop Roshi, founding teacher of Mountain Gate-Sanmonji)"Before Buddha Was Buddha is an alarm clock for the soul. Its words wake you up and lead you out into bright daylight. Its clarity and maturity brings Buddhism down from the realm of the gods and makes the profundity of this Path an actual lived reality. Thank you so much!" (Richard Wehrman, poet, artist, author of Talking To The Wind and Light Was Everywhere)“Rafe Martin offers a book that exactly meets the needs of modern Buddhist practitioners. Zen Master Dogen wrote that the enlightened ones of the past were like us and we will, in the future, be like them. But what were they like? With this book, Sensei Martin shows us that even the most supremely enlightened being, the Buddha himself, had difficult moments in former lives. He felt anger, loss of faith in himself, fear, lust. He made errors and lacked courage. He was, in other words, human—just like us. But he also had tremendous resilience, and a determination to keep practicing through whatever hardship and pain might come his way.  This is deeply affirming of our own humanity and is also something we desperately need to hear in these trying times. Whether you are a Buddhist or not, Before Buddha Was Buddha is an uplifting, important book.”   (Sunyana Graef Roshi, founding teacher and spiritual director of Vermont Zen Center, as well as spiritual director of Casa Zen, Costa Rica.)“Compelling, charming, and often surprising, the gem-like stories found in Before Buddha Was Buddha: Learning from the Jataka Tales, alongside Rafe Martin’s excellent commentary, offer a welcome window into the teaching of Buddhism and the oral tradition that shaped it over many centuries.  A valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding.” (Dinty W. Moore, author of The Mindful Writer)"Those who thought the jatakas were just morality tales for another age should, given Before Buddha Was Buddha, take a fresh look. Rafe Martin draws upon his insight, his knowledge of the jatakas, and his long immersion in the Dharma to create, through these stories and commentaries, vivid constellations we can use to navigate our own dark times." (Bodhin Kjolhede Roshi, Abbot and Spiritual Director, Rochester Zen Center)

This book just arrived and I'm already halfway through - and enthralled! Rafe Martin is a master storyteller (truly - he's received numerous awards and accolades for his oral storytelling) and a well-seasoned hand in Zen practice. Now a Zen teacher, Rafe brings his insight and compassionate outlook to an explanation of these ancient stories (Jataka Tales) of the Buddha in his prior lifetimes (as "The Bodhisattva") - making them clear and pertinent to practitioners (like me) in the 21st Century West.Rafe, uniquely, has led numerous "Jataka sesshins" where he has delivered a daily dharma talk on any one of these several hundred Tales in the Buddhist canon. His interest in these stories is decades-old, and his grasp of the many essential teaching points is inspiring. Easy to read (I'm starting to read the book aloud with a friend) and fun to explore, this book will be a helpful companion to anyone on a spiritual path or just trying to live a better, more human, life. Highly recommended!

I have known Rafe for over 35 years, since before he set up the Oxcart Bookstore in the 1970's. In that time I have witnessed his burgeoning fascination, involvement, and (positively meant) obsession with the Jataka Tales. The Jatakas are the stories of the Buddha "before he was Buddha," living through many lives of development, overcoming obstacles, reborn in various forms, struggling and meeting adverse circumstances. "The Buddhas and ancestors were like us; in the future we shall become Buddhas and ancestors." This is Rafe's third long-book treatment of the Jatakas. The first was The Hungry Tigress (1990); then Endless Path (2010); finally the present volume (2018). In the course of these years he received dharma transmission from Danan Henry Roshi as an independent Zen teacher in the Kapleau and Aitken branches of the Harada-Yasutani lineage. The evolution of Rafe's writing from book to book is quite notable. The Hungry Tigress was rather careful and stiff; Before Buddha Was Buddha is much more wide-ranging, confident, sensitive, deeper, and especially freer--more and more individuated. Rafe has always been a serious writer, and this gradual change in voice is certainly a manifestation of what Torei Zenji called the Long Maturation--the deepening integration and actualization of insight in daily life and work--as unmistakable as the refinement of calligraphy throughout the life of a long-lived teacher, steadily growing more skilled, natural, confident, deft, and playful.

This is an important book for Buddhist practice and a great help for practitioners. These stories show the Buddha in difficult life circumstances, not unlike our own. The Buddha, in these tales, could be blinded by the same sticky everyday habits that we have. But he also always pressed forward and that is an inspiration to us all. These stories and Rafe Martin's penetrating commentary, show us that our failings are not absolute and that grappling with them is in actuality what Buddhist practice is about. Highly recommended!

Rafe Martin does something marvelous in this short book of commentaries on 16 Jataka Tales (and 1 koan). In his lucid and colloquial prose, Martin introduces us to an extraordinarily human Bodhisattva prior to his enlightenment as the Buddha—human even when he incarnates as a deer, a quail, a monkey or a parrot. Each tale illuminates the difficulty of the path, the many setbacks he encountered, and his drive to learn from each experience until all learning was extinguished. But in doing so, Martin reveals how much our own issues are of the same substance as the Buddha’s, and how the Buddha’s path is one not that dissimilar from our own. Out of that arises a profound inspiration to continue, to practice, to fully engage in our lives. Martin’s writing is down to earth, and his commentaries illuminating, subtle and yet easy to grasp. He has brought these ancient tales to life, making them relevant to all today, whether you are Buddhist or not.

I have read many books on Buddhism, zen, religion and philosophy. This was the first book, however, that I have read on the Jataka Tales. From what I have read I would imagine that these stories would speak to different people, young and old, the neophyte and adept, those seeking and those otherwise engaged. I have found this book to be insightful and inspiring, written with perspective, clarity and depth. I hope these stories find their way to broader society, as they have clear applicability and value outside of "Buddhism".

The reviewer Hogen Bays, co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery says on the back jacket, “Clearly the result of decades of practice and insight, written by a very mature teacher.” With that I would whole heartedly agree. However, it also is written by someone with the insight of, to quote a lyric from David Bowie, “An absolute beginner”. Therein lies the beauty and intimacy of this book. Rafe Martin shares these jataka tales of the Buddha’s past lives and shows us a Buddha to be beginning again and again, face to face with challenges similar to those many of us must deal with (or not) in our own lives. The tales are amazing, their relevance to us a thousand or two thousand years’ later spot on. But what helps to really bring them home is Rafe Martin’s commentary and his ability to connect these ancient yet timeless jatakas to a host of other classic and contemporary writers and events. The works of William Blake, Leonard Cohen, James Joyce, Bob Dylan and the Brothers Grimm etc. are all quoted and infuse the tales with a language that speaks from multiple sources across the ages. Quite simply; simple, profound and beautiful.

Rich, inspiring tales creatively told. Deserves to be read and re-read. For Buddhists, non-Buddhists and anyone with a glimmer of curiosity about what life's all about -- this one, the last one and the many to come.

This book has traveled thousands of miles with me and helped me to locate and collect a lot of rough. It is a most usefull book to say the least. When I was in the author's home town, I would have gladly shook his hand.If you are going to MT and want to find minerals, buy this book.

A good resource. But, be sure to get the current version, both of the last two editions are still in print. We used this for a long rockhounding trip and were quite satisfied. As rockhounders know, many rockhounding books simply recycle well known sites and don't add much, if any, value. This book is worth a read.

Given the time period this was written, Lost Light is an excellent book. The summary of Kuhn's work in this book is that the Bible and all its stories - from beginning to end - describe the death of the soul, or incarnation into the physical world. When death is described or referred to in the Bible, it is speaking of the death of the soul (incarnation into the physical body) and not our normal use of "death" as that of the physical body itself. This throws a new light on the scriptures and is a welcomed insight. Really...I don't think I will ever read Paul or John's Revelation quite the same way again!Like Kuhn's other works, this one makes the argument that ancient Egypt had the original esoteric wisdom that other later religious traditions (including Christianity) copied but described using different stories. Although Kuhn's knowledge is obviously extensive in this area, his presentation of parallel concepts between Egyptian and Christian symbolism suffers from lots of detail. He assumes that the reader has a grasp of some fundamentals of ancient Egyptian gods, goddesses, and their stories. Because of that, a reader can get a little lost in understanding what he is trying to point out at times. It would help the reader if he/she has some basic understanding of ancient Egyptian gods/goddesses and their stories. However, one can still glean a lot out of these areas if you have the patience to work through it and do some homework. It is worth it!Kuhn's use of language is incredible. I don't think I've read another author who is quite as prolific in language style than him. It even borders on being poetic at times. That said though, be prepared to look up many words. This is not a quick read. Personally, I like his sophisticated style. However, one reviewer commented how he gets into long introductions and goes into meanderings at times. This is true. I too got annoyed sometimes and wanted him to get on with his main point, but that didn't deter me from the great gems of intelligence that await in other areas. This work takes a decidedly positive view on Plato. The Timaeus is quoted often and other philosophers such as Plotinus, Thomas Taylor, and Edward Carpenter are used as helpful commentary. It also makes many references to Hermetic texts. The Egyptian Book of the Dead is quoted often too. I have never read it but want to now that I've read this text. This is an esoteric work; meaning, it will give the reader an inner or symbolic reading of the scriptures rather than a literal one. If you tend to view scriptural stories, events, and characters as symbolic and not historical, then you're in for a treat. But if you take your Bible as completely literal, then this book will more than challenge that view. Kuhn is no friend of orthodox Christianity and will take issue with a literal view of reading the scriptures at every turn. His view of Bible events and characters are decidedly mythological; much along the lines of Joseph Campbell, John G. Jackson, and Acharya S. That said though, he will vehemently argue for the inner esoteric truth and wisdom of what those Biblical stories teach. If you can't literally believe in the Bible's stories but know there is inner meaning in them, then you'll love Kuhn!My favorite items of insight were how Kuhn makes the sayings of Paul come alive with new inner meaning. Also, his discussions on baptism, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Ark in the story of Noah, among many others, are also excellent. I particularly enjoyed his discussions on reincarnation, which are seldom discussed and frowned upon in the Christian community. What you read about is not your normal Christianity: I think it is a LOT better. It is hard to find writers that provide esoteric views of Bible stories in as much detail as Kuhn. However, if you are looking for other writers besides him, I would highly recommend Inner Christianity by Richard Smoley. This is also a top-notch work but Smoley will have a slightly different twist than Kuhn. Tom Harpur's books, The Pagan Christ and Water Into Wine, will also provides more modern insights that parallel Kuhn's ideas. Harpur readily admits he got most of his material from Kuhn; however, I still think Kuhn does that best job. Finally, I would recommend that you read everything that you can get your hands on by Kuhn. He will provide you with a wealth of ideas. Even if you don't agree with them all, it will show alternative roads that you didn't know were there.

The book goes through the universal myths found around the world and unlocks their unitary message. If you read sacred scriptures as literal historical truth, this book will destroy your faith in the beliefs you've held. If you are courageous and want to think for yourself by having all available information, you will be enlightened. You ahould go on to read A Rebirth of Christianity by Kuhn and Gnosticism by Hoeller.

This book did not have any paragraphs. it has about 500 pages and while the content in some parts made since about similarities in Egyptian culture believing in God, it kept repeating it and other items. Boring. A waste.

The hand of destiny must have led me to this book.It is about the journey of the immortal soul: how it comes into matter, its trials and tribulations, and its goal of regaining its lost divinity. The divine soul is "the persistent traveller on the highways of heaven." Its story is at the core of religion.Kuhn studies many ancient scriptures, particularly those of ancient Egypt, to make his case.He convincingly shows that Christian scriptures also tell of the soul's journey. His starting point is that all scriptures are written in symbolic language, and are not to be taken literally, otherwise confusion will reign. He shows that Christianity is a re-telling of the age old wisdom which is common to all humankind. The Bible is a much misunderstood book, but Kuhn provides the keys to unlock its secrets. As a carrier of a divine soul, every human has a stupendous role to play in the cosmic drama, as explained by Kuhn. Those few who are ready for this book will will get a truly mind blowing experience from it.

In his book "Lost Light: An Interpretation of Ancient Scriptures" the reader is introduced to the true understanding and interpretation of the Christian bible, by recognising its ancient Egyptian source. As the Prologue tells the reader:"If theology is to be rescued from its forlorn state of intellectual disrepute into which not its enemies but its friends have precipitated it through an unconscionable perversion of its original significance to gross repulsiveness, the errors abd distortions perpetrated upon it by those of its own household must be ruthlessly dismantled."The true meaning of much of the Bible can only be understood by its allagorical interpretation, not by an literal/historical interpretation, which has been the teaching of the Christian church since 300 AD.

Dr. Kuhn may be the most profound author ever (in my opinion). This work is tremendous. The command of the languages that Dr. Kuhn has is second to none.

Great book well spring of knowledge to interpret can be a little wordy , but still offers up nuggets to supplement knowledge gained or bring to "Light" knowledge not know

No home library should be without. No college religious department should be without it.No college philosophy department should be without it.i have read"Lost Light" twice, and each time, it sets you off on a course of self discovery through the exploration of comparative study in the effort to keep up with its text.I am so thankful to see it in hardcover, thus i must have this edition for posterity's sake, and for my children's children.Thank you Alvin Boyd Kuhn for being, and challenging us with your intellect.Bless you.

Amazon.com Review

"My eyes see. His eyes see. I see him. And he sees me." With text as simple as simple can be, Theo. LeSieg (a.k.a. Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) uses humor and rhythm to encourage the very youngest children to discover the joy of reading. A big-eyed boy and a pink-eyed rabbit cavort through the book, seeing everything there is to see: a girl, a horse, an old tin can, the sun, the moon--even pink underpants (which makes them both blush). Rhyming objects give the brief "story" a lilting, happy cadence, and Joe Mathieu's cartoonish colorful pictures provide easy clues to the text. This is a friendly introduction to the wide, wondrous world of seeing and reading. An offspring of the world-famous Beginner Books, Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners are designed for an even younger age group. Even preschoolers will be inspired to learn to read with these witty, appealing picture books. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

This series of books is one of our LO's favorite. He'll cycle through handing me the Eye Book, Nose Book and the Ear Book and stay engaged through the whole thing. Fun book to read with your LO. I plan to add the Foot Book soon as well as others.

My great nephew loved it. Just like my grandchildren did. It makes it easy for kids to point and learn to say a word. I'm sure I'll buy more of this particular book, as another niece is expecting, and I wouldn't want her to be without it when she starts reading to the baby.

Great little book! Perfect for bedtime reading and compact enough to travel with. We've been reading this book to our daughter since she was under 1. She's almost 2.5 now and still loves it.

Fun book for 1.5 y/o. She enjoys the rhyme and repetition. Minus one star for "pink eye, pink eye." There are so many better adjectives that could have been used!!

Great size for little hands. I’m an optician so what better book for my grandson!

Great book for preschoolers!Dr. Seuss books are great teaching tools!

Product arrived in less than ideal shape. Luckily was purchasing for myself and not as a gift.

My husband was excited to get this for our new grandaughter! He loves to read to babies!

These guys are on a roll! Amazing books amazing show. I have been reading these far before the show was even conceptionalized. These follow A DIFFERENT PATH FROM THE SHOW! Same characters, different ends (somewhat). A good read and a wonderful addition to your library

I love the walking dead show so I decided to read the comics but instead of getting volume 1-4 I got volume 1, 8, 9, and 13??

enjoying the reading.

I purchased these books for my son who is a big Walking Dead fan. He loves them, and we will probably be purchasing more in the future.

This is not your typical Zombie horror story. It is more a story of survival and what one needs to do in order to survive. It is probably one of the best comics I have read in a long time. It is definitely the best zombie comic out there.

They were a gift for my grandson, he loved them. They were a bit pricey in my estimation, but I'm not into comics.

In the introduction of the first collected volume, Kirkman discusses the idea behind the series - it is so simple and obvious that all other comic creators who are fans of the zombie genre (and yes - zombie have a genre all their own) should have slapped their foreheads when they read it.We enjoy the zombie movies - but the best part is lost when the movie ends:What happens next? This series attempts to answer the question. The first couple of arcs lack great writing and artwork - its alright, but nothing brilliant or original - but it is improving, both the writer and the artist (a fellow I used to feel severly handicapped the X-Files comics) are greatly improving with each installation. With the third collection they are flying high - and I'm more anxious to see the series continue with every new issue. There have been a couple of missteps - but for the most part I feel that Mr. Kirkman is truly living up to his intentions to give the zombie fan what they have always wanted. If you thought holing up in a mall was promising - wait until you get to prison!

There are a lot of Zombie books and mags around, but most of it is not that good. This series makes up some of the better of the zombie genre. Portions of the story are not particularly original but the various arcs are both interesting and original. The details of the lives of the few survivors, how they deal with the zombies and each other make for a very good read. I am really interested in picking up volume 5 when it finally comes out.
