First of all, I am thrilled with the NASB translation, because of its modern english word usage. It’s easy to read and more natural to absorb. The MacArthur study format is breathtakingly helpful in giving a better understanding of overall context of the printed word. In hardcopy, this would be my favorite bible. However, I purchased the Kindle version, and if I were using it on my Kindle Keyboard or Paperwhite, I would say it was awful. As other reviewers have noted, it has a tendency to crash on these platforms. However, I use it with the Kindle application on both my iPad and my iPhone, and it is hands down the most wonderful Bible reading experience ever. With all the reference points in the MacArthur Study Bible, you are bounced from one end of the Bible and back. On the iPad, the Kindle application makes it a snap to bounce from one place to the other and back where you started with the touch of a finger. The experience is seemless and effortless. I am 59 years old, and the MacArthur Study Bible, paired with the Kindle Application on my iPad or iPhone, makes Bible Study the most joyfully satisfying and rewarding Bible Study experience of my life. I could not be more thrilled.

Awesome Bible. Really Great buy. John MacArthur is one of the Best Bible Preachers out there, and he has put together a really awesome Study Bible here. In the past I used to stay away from Study Bibles, because some of them they add all kinds of unnecessary information or they add too much and take up too much on the pages and it becomes more of a lot of unneeded stuff and not enough of Gods Word. Well not here. The Word of God is very well presented here, and the information that MacArthur has added is in little foot notes and his comments on the chapters are very enlightening and very helpful for any person to help get greater understanding of The Word. This is a great Bible. BUT my only complaint is that the Font size is a little small. That is the only thing I do not like. If they had made the font sizes bigger it would be a perfect Bible. The small size fonts make it hard to read without reading glasses.

Have had the bible 6 months and the binding is coming apart. The first 3 pages have come out all at once. If the bible was older and the binding was coming out more towards the middle I might say it is because of extreme usage, but the first 3 pages, I call that a defect. When I purchased this bible I was hoping to get at least a couple of years of use from it, as it is I am hoping it lasts at least a year. Have learned my lesson, either get an electronic copy of this bible or get it at a local bookstore that will honor a replacement for such a short time of usage.

This is a very good bible to have as far as the study features and notes. It comes in the English Standard Version; New King James and the New American Standard versions. The bible I received is stamped "Genuine leather"; the publication information so states and the box also shows that it is genuine leather. The ISBN also shows it as genuine leather. However, the feel of it leads me to think it is "bonded leather". There is really no confidence that it is anything else. Many might think that "bonded leather" is okay that it is still leather. Actually this is not true. Bonded leather has no durability. It is made from leather shavings glued together and pressed into sheets and is then stamped with a grain-like appearance (sometimes not). Everything about the binding tells me that this one is bonded and not genuine leather. I fully expect to have the need to re-bind it later.

Got a really good deal on this book and was excited to read it. Unfortunately every time i tried to download it my kindle would reboot. I called amazon customer support but they were unable to help me. I had to delete this book so my kindle (7th Generation) would work properly. It's such a shame I paid for something I was unable to read.

my favorite Bible. I've gone through quite a few Bibles, since I love giving them as gifts. This one is by far my favorite. I use a Greek/Hebrew concordance/lexicon when I study and this English translation is really word for word spot on to the original text. And to top the greatness off, it has study notes, commentaries maps and so much more to go real deep.I love Johnny Mac! My all time favorite teacher (out of many great ones) I would definitely consider him a mentor and thank God for him and his ministry. Between this Bible and the Grace to you app (gty) i have been able to go so much deeper into my studies and grow so much in the Lord. Can't wait to start teaching the awesome knowledge I've been blessed with for God's glory!If you're considering this Bible, Get it! You won't regret it and chances are you'll love it so much also!

It's about time a book like this was made. It's a nice little hard cover book packed with obscure information, stories, and theories. It covers Monsters, Myths, and Legends from every culture you can think of and every time period. I find this sort of stuff interesting as someone who loves to write fiction. It's over 384 pages long, it has a few illustrations in black and white nothing too fancy but also nothing that one would consider childish. A lot of the illustrations seem to be scans from other time periods so they are probably legit.This book will make for great bathroom reading or as a little something to entertain yourself with if you have some time to kill. It's broken up into little sections so you can jump around any page on whatever chapter you are and start reading about something else right away. It looks great on a shelf and is a fine addition to any old school adventurer library. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

One of my family members took an online quiz about what monster they are and got Mothman. They wondered about the creature and I was able to use this book as a source of info to help them. I like how it give the myth parts and it give some real life sources of the mythos behind some of them.

This book is so cool. It's fun to read and tell people these random pieces of history,tales and mysteries. Excellent conversation starters this as well as Brevertons Nautical curiosities sit next to my couch on a end table. Just the covers and titles alone make guests I have pick them up to check them out! Love love love! You won't b disappointed!

This little book is chock full of information on beasts and monsters, but I was a little disappointed because I thought the book would be bigger and that there would be color pictures. I should have read the description a little closer. It's a cute little encyclopedia-like book on monsters, great for your reference shelf.

I bought this for my kid for Christmas. My 11 year old is really into monsters - from movie monsters to dinosaurs and cryptids. So he really buried his nose in this book even if it might be written for more advanced readers.

This book is very good. It covers mythical creatures to unusual stories of famous and not so famous people in history. It definitely a good read, I'm pretty sure the information given is fairly accurate as well according to the sources used. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who like a good factbook/history of the mythical and mysterious.

Among other things, Oren claims that the need for the fledging United States to build a navy to defend against the Barbary Pirates was the impetus for the Constitution, and there is a lengthy section on Lawrence Arabia, even though the only connection to America is that Lowell Thomas wrote a book about it. After his detailed review of the war against the pirates, little happens other than an endless litany of Christian missionaries starting in the early 1800's, until British and Americans discovered oil in Arabia in the 20th century.

A full comprehensive, and very interesting account that truly brings the current IS involvement in the Middle East in perspective. Long, sometimes too long in certain discussions, not necessarily always an easy read. But definitely recommended for anyone who wants a good understanding of this often convoluted history and fractured relationship between the US and Middle Eastern societies.

Oren does an excellent job going over the history and bringing events together in a natural way, but Oren really centers his efforts on the founding of Israel and the frustrations of American presidents after that founding in balancing the, often contradictory, interests of oil, fighting the Commies, defense of Israel, and still promoting democracy and human rights in the region (usually in that order).What I found most interesting was the extent of American travels in the region and our general prestige in the area to a certain extent. The history of educational institutions founded by Americans and the relatively good natured religious missionary presence goes much longer back, essentially to the late 1700s, than I would have thought.The frequency of minor military excursions into the region I also found fascinating, and was a different aspect of seeing them all compiled in the same book as opposed to reading about them separately. Also interestingly, it is astonishing how quickly the animosity is shifted from the British/French/Imperialists is turned toward the US following the end of WWII and founding of Israel. This is common knowledge almost now, but actually remarkable given our 'footprint' in the region compared to hundred years ago (imagine, a US army occupying Egypt now). While US has certainly had its adventures in the region, they are nothing compared to the European incursions as late as 50 years ago (except Iraq, as it turns out).I did find the book to be frustrating on some topics though. For example, following the Holocaust there were floods of refugees trying to leave Germany. Oren discusses the challenges in finding homes for them all, but doesn't discuss why the US, considered a favored spot for many Jewish refugees (second only to Palestine), was still under immigration quotas and only allowed in a trickle of all displaced persons needing a new home. This is a big point, and one must wonder what would become of the Zionist movement, and the founding of Israel in particular, if the US were more willing to welcome Jewish displaced persons.Maps were oddly lacking for a book on the Middle East. There were only 2-3 in the first few pages as reference, and were quickly forgotten. For a region that sees considerable changes in territory and control, sometimes differing from year to year, it was frustrating to not be able to follow changes as closely as I would have liked.The book largely focuses around Israel, and the founding of it is really seen as a changing point and climax for the book, or at least the event where everything pivots. While not necessarily a bad thing, to title the book "America in the Middle East," and then focus so much on the Zionist movement and Israel, I had to change my expectations for the book. On buying the book, I was hoping to learn more about American involvement in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc. There was some of this in there, but it seemed to be of secondary importance to Israel.In the end, it really is a fantastic book, but left some minor questions that should have been explored by the author but for some reason weren't. But to say it covers all the Middle East is not entirely accurate. There is some discussion, and the last chapters go president by president in interactions with the Mid East, but not in depth (which, come to think of it, even the author admits in the opening chapter).

Michael Oren does a good job in two fronts:1. Fills a vacuum in history for most Americans and for that matter, and particularly, for most Muslims.2. As a historian, needed to respect facts over entertainment, I think he achieves both goals fairly well.If asked, most people would date the relations between Americans and the Middle East to the last few decades. As Oren explains, nothing is farther from the truth. The relationship has certainly changed, but it has always been there. Initially through missionaries, merchants and explorers, and lately diplomatically and militarily.This relationship, according to Oren has quite often been one-sided. After failing to convert Muslims, Americans established Universities and institutions that helped Middle Easterners integrate to modern life, often with great success.In many ways, some aspects of this relationship has not changed. While the UK was paying "protection" money to the Barbary states so they would not attack their ships, when America became independent, its commercial ships became targets of the same pirates. The decision of whether to pay or fight was not an easy one, and in many ways reflects similar more recent situations. In any event, few people know that Tripoli (the Barbary States) was the first entity to declare war to America back in 1801.Oren uses three elements to explain this relationship: Power, Faith and Fantasy. The increased power that America wielded is obviously a factor that plays a central role, but very different from the one wielded by the Europeans, who always saw in the Middle East a source for their resources. It can be said that more often than not, the US applied force was to rescue or improve the lives of Muslims.Faith also played a central role in two ways. On one hand, missionaries risked everything to spread their faith and saw in the Holy Land a place whose rightful owner were the Jews. At the state level, Oren describes the decision making process of several US presidents, who often had to find a balance between pragmatism and beliefs.The aspect that can arguably explain the US-Middle East relationship is what Oren calls Fantasy, represented in literature, movies and initially in international expositions. Oren argues that art reflects the perception that Americans have of the Middle East. Initially remote and sensuous, and more recently, permeated with fanaticism and terror. One can argue that a movie about terrorism as a historic document doesn't have much value, but Oren is out there to put some "salt" on something that has been cooked already with facts, and that makes it more interesting.Perhaps where the book is not as objective is in the more recent history. The author over-emphasizes the importance Arabs give to the presence of Israel in the Middle East as a source of many of the grievances. Since it was written before the "Arab Spring," it is clear to many that the biggest problems of Arabs and Muslims is not external, that their sufferings are often self-inflicted, and that they have forgotten what Americans have done for them in over 200 years.All in all, it's an easy reading for people interested in understanding a region that like it or not, in our time has become our virtual neighbor.

This book absolutely blew me away from the first line. It draws you in so well, it feels like you’re a part of the story (and you kind of are!) I don’t want to give too much away, since I really think it’s best to go in knowing as little as possible; so please bear with my extremely vague review. (Maybe I’ll do a book talk soon so I can talk in detail?)I really loved how we got to see through multiple POVs that were seemingly unconnected until the end! The way everything tied together made so much sense and I liked that it wasn’t something that was easy to figure out sooner.The characters and world building in this book are absolutely amazing! Everyone is well fleshed out and it really feels like you’re living through them. When you can feel the same emotions as characters and envision the world clearly, how could you not fall in love?There is also TONS of diversity as well as strong female characters; what more could you want?For some reason I thought the little extras and hints were printing errors in the beginning and I honestly feel so ridiculous for thinking it, haha. First I saw a fingerprint on one of the pages and was like, “wow, that’s a really big error for a Penguin book.” Then, about 100 pages in, I noticed the words on the bottom of the pages and finally realized that I was missing out on all kinds of clues and hints.I did some reasearch and found that the author said there were 10+ hidden messages! I am not perceptive enough to find them all, even after going through the book twice; so if anyone else has found more than two please tell me. I need to know!Overall, I really loved this book. It’s been a while since a book completely blew me away and this really did it for me. I’m absolutely amazed that this is a debut novel, since it was written so well! Also, the books are absolutely gorgeous!

Let me start off by saying I absolutely love this book! I had been hearing so many good things about it on Twitter, that I finally bought a copy so I could read. When I got approved for The Speaker on Edelweiss (review coming!), I dove into this book. I was not disappointed. From the first page, I was so intrigued by this world where books were magic! Sefia is an amazing character to follow. She’s had so many bad things happen to her, that you can’t help but root for her. Along the way we meet characters like Captain Cannek Reed (my new book boyfriend!), Archer, and the rest of the crew of the Current of Faith. If you like adventure, a great library, books that are magical, and a bit of mystery this is the book for you! I can’t go into too much detail without spoiling anything, so I’ll stop here. Pick up this book!

A friend of over 50 years insisted that I plunge into Traci Chee's work. When I mentioned it to my niece who's a high school English teacher, enthusiastically agreed with him... so I did a test run with The Reader. I was not at all sure at first because the book ignores chronological time lines and/or conventional sequencing. About 1/3 of the way in, I found myself making time to get to and thru the book. I whipped thru the rest of it and immediately plunged into The Speaker, the next book in the trilogy. Be warned that Chee is brutal in the treatment of her characters and unsparing in her description of violence and its results. It is also a YA novel so there's a serious measure of post-adolescent longing and misunderstanding, but it's handled in a way that doesn't provoke eye-rolling in adults.

This book was like opening a treasure box. It was full of believable people with intersecting lives and little jeweled bits of surprises and even one puzzle that it took me half of the book to notice. I was delighted NOT to see the same old cliches that are in fantasy, but the clear original idea that reading is magic. And it is. You pick up some bound pages with black marks and live somebody's life. Magic. I tend to stay away from series until all the books are written because I hate waiting years for the next one but I can solve that problem. Traci Chee! Hurry up and write the next book! There. Took care of that problem.

I read a lot. I read across all genres and (sadly) a huge range of quality gradients. Track Chee is special. If you are looking for a good writer who has the gift of writing in a way that brings fantasy alive, Chee will not disappoint.Perfection? A dream come true? A readers ideal writer? Nope - none of that.What she is is a writer working hard at constantly challenging herself to find ever better ways to improve at what she does.What she is is inspiring. Reading her writing reminds me of Steve Prefontaine and what he said he was trying to do as a runner: "some people create with words, or with music, or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run. I like to make people stop and say, 'I've never seen anyone run like that before'. It's more than just a race, it's style. It's doing something better than everyone else. It's being creative."Traci Chee is inspiringly creative. Her writing is, to me, as wonderful an example of creativity in the written word as I have seen in a very long time.Read her. Buy her. Encourage her. She is an example of what working to perfect your craft and make something beautiful is all about, and beauty is something our world always needs more of.

I was completely captivated by this debut fantasy novel. A world where there are no books and no one that knows how to read... the idea completely intrigued me. But wait! Books and reading DO EXIST — at least if you are part of the secret hidden society. Then you know all about these mysterious things that hold such immense power in the world. There were so many characters revealed in this story... but it added to, not distracted from the story. In Sephia's interactions in the world at large, it only makes sense that she would encounter so many different people while she goes about her adventures. I truly enjoyed the way the story is told with excerpts from The Book intertwined. I can't wait to read the next!

There aren't many princess books centered around a person of color, and fewer still that aren't overtly sexist. This book bucks the trend and is a healthy way to indulge your child's desire to be a princess without perpetuating negative stereotypes. That said, the story is somewhat weak. I'm glad to have purchased the book, but mostly because there aren't too many alternatives.

This is the best African America book that I ever read. They don't say "I'm black this or because I am black". this book is like or white counterparts that talk about being a beautiful princess and not bringing up race. It is ok to bring up race sometimes but not in a fairytale book.children can sense something wrong when you keep bringing up race. The princess has beautiful black rich friends and she has a handsome father and a beautiful mother and a cute baby brother. I love this book!

My daughter is really into princesses right now so of course I went looking for everything princess. Its difficult to find books that show girls of color and its even harder to find something besides the one AA Disney princess that we all know (even though I love Tiana!) so I was thrilled to come across this book. It has a great message, the illustrations are excellent and my daughter loves it! The only thing that would make it better is if it came in a hardcover!

This book is a "little flimsy" for the price and the story is a little lacking.

It's hard finding books that will help with self esteem. I have a niece that is 3 and I got the book for her birthday. Everytime she comes to visit she asks me to read the book. I'm so happy she is in love with the book.

I've bought so many copies and will continue to do so. Every little girl (brown girls especially) should have a copy of this book. It's great to see brown girls depicted as pretty and princesses!!! This book provides a great start for those people doing a wedding on a tight budget. It gives sound advice that can help the bride & groom put together a wedding that is original yet affordable.The strongest feature is the author's discussions of specific weddings. Each wedding highlighted provides a detailed list of all the wedding expenses and the total wedding cost. The weddings also run from a little under $2000 to almost $5000, so it does give a wider, more practical array than other similar books. It gives indepth information on specific items, how they saved money on some items and what they did to make their wedding special.The author also points out how important it is to set priorities in your budget. She gives samples and this notes you should focus your budget accordingly on the items that are most important to you. May seem simple, but it is key to success.Overall, the books is a good starting point for planning the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank.I would also suggest "How to Have an Elegant Wedding for $5000 (or Less)" as it has some more practical suggestions as well.

Excellent advice for creating a great experience without breaking the bank.

The book is called Priceless Weddings not Perfect Weddings. The book is for realistic brides that dont expect to have everything that they want and expect this book will tell you some secret formula.The book gives great ideas to make your wedding unique and makes great suggestions on finding friends of friends or family that will give you a discount. There is nothing wrong with using connections to get a great deal. I had a wedding with over 100 people, it was professionally catered, a professional photographer, a professional florist, a huge professionally made wedding cake, a professional DJ, and it was all under $5000. Friends and family said we must have spent a fortune and said it was one of the greatest weddings that they had ever attended.

Was concerned at first that this book would be outdated, but found many ideas and tips that are still VERY practical. Loved how it included real weddings and how they saved $. Perfectly describes step-by-step how to come up with a budget and stick to it. This was very useful!

This book was a total waste of money. The elegant weddings cost so little because the brides have family or friends who provide food, liquor, photos, reception sites, etc. If you have an aunt who is a professional wedding photographer, you probably don't need to spend money on a book that tells you to ask her to take your photos. If you don't have family who can provide these services, or you don't want to ask your friends to provide a dish for a potluck reception, then do yourself a favor and save the money you planned to spend on this book for your wedding itself. It should receive zero stars.

This book was a helpful tool for staying within my budget. There were lots of ideas and alternatives to the traditional $25,000 wedding budgets.

While the day is not yet upon us, I know it won't be long before my daughter will be planning the day of her dreams. While I want her to have a day that she will remember forever because of how special it made her feel, we will definitely be on a budget and can in no way complete with all the wedding shows she faithfully watches when she has school breaks on TV! Nor do I want to feel pressured to "keep up with the Joneses". But is it possible to have the "day of your dreams" for under $5000? I am still going to have to wait to see if my daughter jumps on board with the idea but Priceless Weddings for Under $5000 by Kathleen Kennedy has given me the tools to at least consider options rather than my daughter having to work for years to pay off her wedding just like many work to pay off school loans. Perhaps she will be able to work within the budget we allow her?I loved the testimonials in the beginning of the book. So many "how to" books are theory so it is wonderful to know that someone has actually made this work. You may not be able to have a wedding that will be written up in the Post or featured on Four Weddings but I think if you follow the guidelines and prioritize what you really do want, a budget of $5,000 could be enough. The key, as usual, is who you know. Do you know someone who can make your wedding cake? Take photos? Alter your dress? Is spending thousands on a dress a priority for you or is something more affordable an option?I guess some of the suggestions just won't work for many people but weddings used to be a time when friends and family all worked together to make it happen and be such a special day. If that time has passed, perhaps you won't find much use for several of the ideas. However, personally, I would like to see those days return. Even if you don't have family and friends ready to roll up their sleeves and help with your day, I think reading through the book offers a bride and her family much to consider and covers all the areas of planning the day of your dreams. You won't discover any magical formula but you will find wise options in one place with advice and thoughts given by someone who has more experience that I or anyone else I have access to.I did receive this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and am in no way obligated to write a positive one.
