Having just finished reading Doug Waterman's book IT ONLY HURTS WHEN I SIT DOWN, I'm going to do something very rare...read it again. It is that good! If you would like to participate in an exciting outdoor adventure vicariously, without any of the dangers, discomforts or frustrations of actually being there, then this is a story I would highly recommend. Doug has a very appealing writing style and an obvious grasp of the history of America's famous Route 66. He makes you feel that you would have enjoyed accompanying him on his journey visiting the forgotten and abandoned businesses as well as those still struggling to survive. However, you may not have chosen the same transportation. Doug opted for a 30 pound bicycle loaded down with about 46 pounds of camping gear, etc. He used his 155 lb. body to propel this for 30 days and 2300 miles from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois. I am also an avid bicyclist and once did a cross country trip from Los Angeles to Boston. However, it was with a company that provided sag wagons if needed and moved all gear from motel to motel. All I had to do was peddle my 18 lb. bike and enjoy the camaraderie of about 30 like minded friends. Doug had no such luxuries. Mr. Waterman, you have my respect and thanks for sharing your voyage of discovery.

I confess: I am a prisoner of a happy childhood and a devoted slave to nostalgia. I am also old enough to remember Route 66 as it was in the early 1960s, when cars were big, gas was cheap, and half the month of August hadn’t yet been appropriated by the local school district. Like countless other American families, mine would pile into the station wagon and head west, bound for California, land of golden sunshine, the easy life, and Walt Disney, before he packed up and headed east to stake his claim amidst the orange groves of central Florida.Doug Waterman’s book, It Only Hurts When I Sit Down, allows me to once again recall those halcyon days from the comfort of my easy chair. Wheras my raucous trips west were taken in the company of my loving parents and eight brothers and sisters, Waterman’s trip east on old 66 was an introspective and spiritually fulfilling solo experience of almost unimaginable physical taxation—in the Spring of 2005, he rode his bicycle from Santa Monica to Chicago in a thirty-day time span. Wheras my trips were taken in my childhood, and Waterman was aged 66 at the time of his Herculean journey, our respective experiences share a common, timeless thread—family. This is a travelogue very much about self, and yet the omnipresent, overarching theme is familial love and the strength that that love conveys to Waterman along his marathon journey to Chicago. Indeed, for the lonely rider, familial love is sustenance itself, as much as the eggs, toast, hash browns, sopapillas, trail mix, bananas, V-8, and eggs “fried hard.” I had to chuckle at the author’s description of delicious sopapillas; I remember my family’s wonderment at this exotic, delicious, heretofore unknown foodstuff that we encountered in Santa Fe in 1962. (The most delicious food we had ever eaten til we got to the Seattle World’s Fair and had the Belgian waffles!)It Only Hurts When I Sit Down will appeal to anyone who is interested in travel, especially along old Route 66. It will appeal to anyone who is interested in biking and anyone who is interested in what is now called “third-age living.” The fact that Waterman set, and achieved, such a daunting personal goal at age 66 is truly remarkable. The author has an easy-to-read, unpretentious, descriptive and insightful writing style and a heckuva story to tell. Since I met Waterman on his stop in Springfield, Illinois, back in ’05, I have become a weekend ‘warrior’ on my bike, riding the Springfield-to-Rochester trail on Sunday mornings. It’s five miles out and five miles back, and after a hot shower and my platter of eggs (over easy, thank you), I’m ready for a solid hour-long nap on the softness of my couch. Suffice it to say that I have an appreciation for what he accomplished that I didn’t have back when we met during his “66 on 66” adventure.Full disclosure: Doug bought my coffee that day we met and sent me a copy of the book recently, and so I hereunto declaim my influence has been bought and paid for, in full! This is a great book that appeals to a range of interests. Informative for anyone insane enough to want to cycle for thousands of miles, nostalgic for those of us that remember Highway 66 and great details for those who love human interest stories. While this is a wonderful adventure fraught with challenges and meeting interesting people along the way, Doug doesn't leave out the loneliness and anxiety that accompany the joy and fun. This story is real and a delight to read!

This book is a great read! The journey is retold with such vivid detail I felt like I was taking the 2,300 mile journey along with the author. Not only does he exhibit the courage and determination necessary to undertake and complete such a challenging solo journey, but relates the adventure with humor and poignant personal insights gained along the way, and of course with lots of historical tidbits of Route 66 and small town Americana woven throughout. this book is seriously GR8. that pic is literally after I read like the very first few pages, super rough but this book really teaches you the basics in a very easy to learn and fun way! I absolutely love this book and highly reccomend it to anybody who loves anime and wants to have some fun creating some super cute characters ヾ( ＾ω＾)ﾉ

Bought it for my granddaughter for Christmas and she has mentioned several times how helpful it's been. She's shared it with her sister and cousins -- and one of the cousins recently won an art award from skills she learned from this book.

My daughter adores this drawing book and has been coming back to it again and again since I bought it. Do you want your house covered in adorable creatures? OF COURSE YOU DO. Buy this for your kids.

This book is not just a drawing book, but also has a lot of Japanese folklore, and information in it. This is the second time I've purchased it, as the first book was stolen from my classroom.

Overall there was a lot of information in the book. I would of preferred to see a lot more picture illustrating the steps. The pictures that are there are rather small even when enlarged in my kindle. as I said there was a great deal of useful information and I'm sure that using it in conjunction with other books I have bought will help immensely.

Illustrations for all sorts of animals? Yes. Fantasy, normal, even full-size despite being a book on chibis. You cannot, on any platform, fault this book for lack of illustration. The only things to really complain about are probably incredibly common complaints--lack of instruction. The diagrams are simple to follow and understand, but diagrams alone can't tell you all you need to know (unless you fly that way, in which case I would be jealous.) The written instructions are lacking enough to leave a bit of a roadblock, so if you're not confident in your ability to "Look, copy, draw", then I don't really recommend this. If you are confident however, this is a great reference piece; aside from normal animals, instead of going for the typical western creatures, we have the eastern demons--includes the eastern Dragon, Kirin, Phoenix, Bakeneko, Kitsune, Tengu, and lots of other animals and creatures related to Japan and it's mythology.If you compare content with instruction, its slightly off-balance; still, this book receives a minimum of 3 stars from me.

My daughter recently became interested in manga, and drawing manga. She showed a propensity for it, so we got her this book. Her skills have improved, and she loves all of the cool new characters she can create!

Love it! Good illustrations and we'll explained.

Keith J Karren, PhD has taught, researched, and published in the Health Sciences for four decades. He earned his PhD in Health Sciences at Oregon State University in 1975 and spent 39 years as a professor and department chair of Health Science at Brigham Young University. He is the author or co-author of several leading textbooks including Mind/Body Health, Prehospital Emergency Care, and First Aid for Colleges and Universities.   N. Lee Smith, MD, is co-founder of the Center for MindBody Health in in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also Director of Stress Medicine at the Omega Interventional Pain Clinic, and an investigator at Lifetree Clinical Research there. He created the Stress Medicine Clinic at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, where he has been Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and received student teaching awards. Dr. Smith received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Absolutely amazing book; I am so happy I was introduced to this topic through my master's program. If you want to learn more about our mind-body connection and how we can help heal ourselves and others, this is a must read. I am often annoyed with textbooks because they're boring to read or filled with grammatical errors. This book is definitely one of a kind in the psychology world. Love, love, love!

The pages are falling out. Some are falling out. the ones that are still attached to the spine are barely hanging on.

The book is not in acceptable condition. Some of the pages were out of the book and the spine of the book is broke so more pages keep falling out as you read.

I like the book because it is really gave indepth explanation of every topic outline. It a met its requirements as recommended textbook for my course.

Really interesting content but some chapters get redundant.

RACHELLE DOORLEY is an arts educator, community builder, and founder of the popular creativity blog Tinkerlab. She studied costume design at the University of California, Los Angeles, and worked on Hollywood films before finding her true calling as an arts educator. After teaching art in Los Angeles schools, Rachelle earned a master’s in arts education from Harvard, and then oversaw docent and education programs at the San Jose Museum of Art. Rachelle lives with her husband and her two curious daughters in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, where she leads workshops on visual thinking and hands-on creativity. I have somewhat followed the authors blog for a while now, but when I decided to purchase this book I thought it would just be a simple 55 projects. It is much more than that. With several variation to each of those 55 projects which appeal to young children as well as teen-age boys and adults, I was so very impressed as I read it cover to cover in one day. As an early childhood educator I feel it is difficult to find fabulous books such as this one, which has lots of appeal and some very creative projects with some unique spins on the variations. My seven year old is fascinated, as is my 22 year old son. Lots of great ideas for everything from making marks with crayons and markers but also delves into simple machines, robotics, electronics and some really unique hands on art experiences that are not widely published in the typical make and do books. Love the drawing machine that kids can construct with a simple motor, tape and markers, the geodes inside egg shells, the lava lamp, the photography ideas and the ideas to make art in nature (Which doesn't have to be permanent, still respectful, and fun even for others to enjoy after you're gone). My 7 year old's first project was the straw rockets, and he was hooked on this book. Fabulous ideas for the tiniest of tots to teachers who are not easily impressed, such as me. If I could give it 6 stars I would have. Beautiful photography and simple guidelines throughout the book make this the go to for many hours of fun, unplugged creativity well worth the cost of this great find! Well Done Tinkerlab!

This book gives me ideas for how to give my kids a fun childhood, and as we do the projects, I feel like I'm back in my own childhood!Cloud dough! Who would have thought it would feel SO good to play with oil and flour? Adding the essential oil in it is an extra bonus that will someday be a trigger for the memory. We'll smell lavender in 15 years and my son will say, "remember when we used to make cloud dough and I spilled it all over the floor and then dumped out even more when you went to get a towel?" Yes, I remember.

You’ve probably seen the pictures on Pinterest and maybe other social media, but perhaps didn’t realize the activities were Tinkerlab. What is Tinkerlab? Maybe you have heard about Tinkerlab classes or activity events in your area. What is the difference between Tinkerlab and loose parts? Minnesota even has Teen Tinker Lab events, and I’m sure events and classes are available in many states. If you want to know more, this book will make it easy to set up this kind of learning in your own home or classroom as a special event for for indoor recess. The book has 55 activities for children to explore their world with creative experiments with easy to find materials.

This book is AMAZING and has transformed my home into a child-friendly place to create and tinker. I tentatively set up a Tinkerlab in an area in my kitchen, and even though it takes up space, it is space well-used. What a valuable asset this is to our home! I like things to be tidy and organized, so I had to find a way to make this creative space work for my personality. I bought a three-tiered turquoise cart on wheels from IKEA, a customizable 3-door cabinet/TV stand from IKEA, and a variety of "Coloration" containers from the Container Store to house the materials. I also got a couple TV trays from IKEA to periodically set out "invitations" in a contained space. My kids (and I) are now constantly creating, and it looks neat and tidy after our project is complete.

This book is absolutely fabulous! I started integrating Tinkerlab activities into my kindergarten classroom this fall and I am loving the creativity this is inspiring in my students! Rachelle Doorley is such an inspiration! The ideas in the book are well laid out and easy to follow. I have gifted this book to a few friends also to use at home with their 3-6 year-olds and they have also been enjoying it. A great find and a lovely way to get kids thinking in creative ways regularly!

Tinkerlab is one of the first blogs I followed and it remains a constant source of inspiration. I'm thrilled to see Tinkerlab in print! The projects in this book cover a wide variety of subjects but the guiding premise, that kids should make and create, remains strong and clear. I love how Rachelle Doorley walks you through how to set up your home for creative success. I also enjoyed reading the essays from seasoned professionals in the educational and professional world. This book is not to be missed for kids and grown-ups who love to create and tinker!

Great little book with all sorts of creative ideas to keep toddlers busy! I love all the beautiful pictures, as well, though it makes me wish I had a more artistic eye and space in my house for these kinds of activities. =) There are suggested adjustments to the "experiments" for the younger toddler crowd, and my 2½ year old daughter has been enjoying various projects from this book for the last 6 months since I bought it!

I love this book. There are instructions for specific activities to set up and do with your children, but more valuable to me are the general guidelines and encouragement offered on how to create a home where creativity can happen authentically and spontaneously.

More times that I want to remember I had tough questions that I didn't knew how to answer them, and I lost the opportunity to get a great job.I was frustrated, upset because I didn't knew how to prepare myself ahead of my interview so I could answer in a natural way these kind of questions.If you want to get your dream job, take the time to read this book, it will help you to know how to answer the hardest questions in an honest way so you can get the job that you want.

Most of the "tough" questions did not apply to me so it was kind of a waste for half of it. It is clear that she is knowledgeable on the subject but I disagree with some of her answers. Still, if you have some rough items on your resume' or job application, like being fired on your last job for misconduct or having a conviction on your record this can be a big help to you.

I notice that she repeated quite a few interview questions in this book. These particular questions were worded the same as the original question. Other than that, I learns that the questions were geared toward my professional behavior, how I react to stressful situations, and how well I get along with other people.

Awesome approach to interviewing that takes so much guess work out of this exhausting and tedious process. The author gives solid advice that is transferable.

It's a very good book which explains what the employer really means asking different personal/behavioral questions. I think this book alone might be sufficient to prepare for personal/behavioral interview questions. I read some online resources before reading this book, so I cannot tell for sure, but it definitely covers most possible questions.

Eye opener for me. I should have read this before but better late than never! It explains how the questioner is thinking so you say what he/she is looking to hear.

I highly recommend this book. It has a multitude of helpful suggestions for the interviewer. I used this book to prepare for face to face interviews. After reading the book I felt truly prepared for any type of interview question. I understood what information the interviewer was trying to gather from the question and how to to respond to present myself in the best possible manner. I landed a job using this book and I will refer back to it throughout my career. Great resource!
