Even books for Dummies expects the dummy (me) to know all the computer functions. Regrettably much if the book was beyond my understanding. Sob

The book probably works for someone more learned in the Computer Jargon than I am. It's very thorough and well written, but I need someone to look over my shoulder and verbally help me figure out how to use Google Chrome to its fullest. Fine book for those who can use it.

it is ok, but did not help me for what I wanted to know

This book is not too well organized with "how to do" but is extremely informative although it is "not a book for dummies." It is a book for an intelligent person who feels dumb when it comes to figuring out a new product, such as Chrome Books.

Not a lot of new information that you can't find online at the Google site.

no comment

fair

The book covered a lot of silly stuff that I'm not interested in and very little of the important things. It's also somewhat dated and the material doesn't quite match the latest software so there is some guessing and trial and error involved. e.g. I was trying to install and synchronize chrome on 3 different devices - desktop, laptop and tablet. This important topic is not covered. I did an online search and came up with a few clues. I eventually figured it out on my own by trial and error. I've looked through the books at Amazon and I haven't found an up to date no nonsense one that adequately covers the subject. I guess there aren't too many authors interested in the subject since Google is constantly changing and there material is outdated before it goes to press.

The Sign and the Seal: The Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant, by Graham Hancock

From Kirkus Reviews

English journalist Hancock retells the circumstances and thoughts that led to his discovery that the Lost Ark of the Covenant really exists. (Note that the subtitle is not How Indy and I Raided the Lost Ark.) Hancock was in Ethiopia in 1983, having been hired by the Ethiopian government to write and produce a coffee-table book extolling that country. He was greatly surprised when told that Ethiopia's Falasha Jews did not exist, and that many people could land in jail, or worse, if he went around photographing such nonexistents. Even so, off he went to Axum, deep in the desert, to see the temples and statuary of the Black Jews of Ethiopia. What he found was a sect that claimed to have the original Ark of the Covenant. Refused entrance to the sanctuary of the jealously guarded Ark, Hancock went home--and saw Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, which inspired him to investigate the history of the Ark. Built at the foot of Mount Sinai, Hancock tells us, it ``was deposited [around 955 B.C.] by Solomon in the Holy of Holies of the First Temple.'' Later, Hancock says, it was stolen by Solomon's outcast son and carried south to Ethiopia and kept there for 800 years by a Judaic cult. Then it apparently was seized by the Knights Templar, who thought that it was the Holy Grail. The Knights converted the Jews, who kept the Ark in a great church. And to protect the Ark, all of the churches in the cult have their own replicas of the Ark: The original is never seen, even on the holiest days of the year. In 1991, during the Gulf War, Hancock returned to Axum to see the Ark--and was refused. Not as much fun as might be hoped as Hancock digs through literary and bibical texts while convincing himself that the Ark exists. (Sixteen pp. of b&w photographs--not seen.) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

My second reading: 2017.I first read this in 1994, and I thought it was grand. That it made a good case too. Since then, however, author Graham Hancock has sort of one off the deep end. So, with my second reading, what would I find?I find Hancock's travelogues interesting. I find his analysis of sculpture at Chartres, his exegesis of the grail literature, and his reading of history reasonable, supportable, and interesting. I don't think he makes any logical leap too far. Is it a far-fetched theory? Sure. (But this is a book about an object most people would today consider a myth. Hancock himself thinks it's a magic box made with some unknown civilization's technology by Moses.)Spoiler. The theory is: (a) the Ark was spirited out of the Temple in the reign of evil Manasseh; (b) righteous priests took it to Elephantine Island in the Nile in Egypt, where a number of Jews were already living; (c) Josiah reorganizes Judaism and cleanses the Temple, asking the priests to return the Ark, but Jeremiah hints that it is gone; (d) in the 400s BC, the native Egyptians expelled the Jews from Elephantine, so the Ark was moved southward to the Lake Tana region of Ethiopia, where some Jews may already have migrated; (e) these Jews were the ancestors of the Falasha (black Jews) of Ethiopia, and later would influence the Judaic character of Ethiopian Christianity; (f) eventually, after some movements, the Ark ended up in Axum under Christian protection; (g) Knights Templar in Jerusalem, looking perhaps for the Ark, made contact with Ethiopian Christians, and traveled there to help the Christians fight Muslim invaders; (h) the Templars left Templar crosses across parts of Ethiopia, and left clues to the location of the Ark in the Grail literature of Wolfram von Eschenbach and Chrétien de Troyes. That, in some twists and turns, is the book. It makes good sense. The late Stuart Munro-Hay in The Quest for the Ark of the Covenant take some issue with Hancock's research and conclusions, but he does not offer a point-by-point demolition of Hancock's book. Like Munro-Hay, others in the scholarly community call it drivel, but Hancock does make some points that need consideration. For instance, the Templar–Ethiopia connection, the Grail–Ark connection, the Jerusalem–Elephantine–Falasha connection deserve more attention. I think, in most places, Hancock makes a good case. Some caveats. If you believe in the literal truth of the Bible, Hancock does not. He thinks the Ark is a magic box done with ancient technological trickery. (He doesn't come out and say it, but perhaps radioactive trickery.) You see the birth in this book of Hancock's later works. Hancock posits that Moses, as architect of the Ark (not God), was the inheritor of some advanced ancient wisdom from a lost civilization. Here he places it some place equidistant from Egypt and Mesopotamia and in the distant past. Later, beginning with Fingerprints of the Gods, he conjures up some Atlantis-like fallen civilization (first in Antarctica, and later elsewhere).A great page-turner for a non-fiction book, and well worth the cheap price you can probably find copies for.

I really liked this book, since I learned a ton of stuff. It is like a historical treasure hunt. There is a lot to say, but one thing that really stands out to me for modern implications is his commentary about what happened to the Templars. In fact, I sent this next paragraph to my friend after reading it:My Comment (to be read after the article...amazon wont allow links, but do an internet search for "Modern-Physics-and-the-Shamir.htm" and check the link on chabad dot org, then read the paragraph below):How was the Shamir utilized if it was alpha radiation? Meaning, the builders could not just hold it, right? Seems like they would have needed to construct a holder of lead or something. Because if you held it directly in order to cut stone, it would go right through your fingers...right?I have heard that the Knights Templar had the Shamir when they built the stone churches at Lalibela, Ethiopia in 1185-1209. See pages 155, 369-370 of "Sign and the Seal" by Graham Hancock. Since the Scottish Freemasons and Portuguese Order of Christ inherited anything left of the Templars (ibid, page 167), I suggest that one of these two groups (or both) may even today possess the Shamir. Maybe they are waiting for the appointed time to share this with the true builders of the Third Temple (T3).Also, check out "Temple" by Robert Cornuke for compelling reasons to suspect that T3 will not be on the Temple Mount, but in the City of David...where he believes T1 and T2 actually stood. This has stunning implications.

I first read "The Sign and the Seal" back in the really 90's and was just blown away. As an Orthodox Christian I knew roughly what Graham Hancock was talking about, but it was't until I read his book that my general understanding about the Journey of the Ark of the Covenant was clarified and a much bigger and clearer story of it's journey was established. Mr. Hancock presents a facts based evidence driven account of how the Ark of the Covenant went from Jerusalem, to Egypt and finally down to Ethiopia, and is currently revered and protected by the Holy Ethiopian Orthodox Church. I strongly recommend "The Sign and the Seal" for all who are interested in this story of of the Ark's journey, and the Providential Hard of God in protecting His Ark and placing it in the hands of Humble and Faithful servants down in Ethiopia.

This book was recommended to me prior to a trip to Axum, Ethiopia. To be precise, a senior executive of a successful Ethiopian business recommended it to me, saying: "If you read that book you will understand us." That was perhaps too optimistic, given how complex Ethiopian society is, but the book does explain a great deal about Ethiopia and some key aspects of Ethiopian identity.Meanwhile, archeology has moved on and some of Hancock's key assumptions -- most important that there was no advanced civilization in Ethiopia at the time of Solomon -- have been cast in doubt. Modern scholars now believe that the Sabean culture moved north from Ethiopia to Yemen, not the other way around. At all events, the great obelisks at Axum have been carbon dated to around 1,000 BC -- the age of Solomon. So there may be very much more to the Ethiopian legend than even Hancock suggests. The strengths of this book are Hancock's ability to describe Ethiopia -- its landscape, people and legends. For anyone interested in that fascinating country, it is well worth the read, and the entire search for the Ark of the Covenant becomes secondary.

I Am Invited to a Party! (An Elephant and Piggie Book), by Mo Willems

Review

The ever-exuberant Piggie is invited to a party, but it is the more circumspect Gerald the elephant who knows his way around parties and insists that they must prepare. Under Gerald's guidance, the pair dresses for a fancy party, a pool party, and a costume party cumulatively, layering their garb into truly eccentric fashion statements. Willems executes a fresh take on the cumulative tale in this fourth installment in his easy reader series starring Piggie and Gerald, introducing an updated set of survival words and sentence structures for new readers, as well as str4essing the importance of reading pictures as well as words for a more comprehensive approach to contemporary literacy. Humor emanates from Gerald's calm assurance of his expertise ("I know parties," the pachyderm proudly asserts) counterpoised against Piggie's skepticism, which is expressed through wry glances and direct addresses to the reader. She's merrily compliant, though, and the payoff is surprising and witty. These books will easily take their place alongside Seuss and Eastman as classics in the beginning-reader genre. BCCB"Beginning readers familiar with Willems's books will recognize his distinctive humor and illustrative style in these stories. When Piggie receives her first invitation to a party, she asks Gerald to join her and relies on his advice because he "knows" parties in order to prepare for the big event. The elephant, however, has a tendency to overanalyze, so he prepares them both for any contingency a fancy/pool/costume party. Piggie's expressive features show her questions about their attire, but the friends set off bedecked in flippers, masks, top hat, pearl earrings, cowboy hat, and evening dress. Imagine her surprise when they find all the other guests as lavishly overdressed as they are. In the second title, Gerald learns that there are worse things than a bird on your head, namely, two love birds, a nest, and three hatchlings. With the help of Piggie, he is finally able to ask them to move, but, as the final page reveals, they have become her problem. Both books use speech bubbles gray ones for Gerald, pink for Piggie to tell the entire story. This feature is a nice touch that facilitates paired/choral readings. The conversation between the friends flows smoothly and allows beginning readers to practice expression as they read. These appealing titles will tickle the funny bones of children and are sure to become favorites. SLJ"From easy reader and chapter book series to epic fantasies, favorite characters, settings and story lines reemerge in new additions. Young readers will welcome the return of Mo Willems's pessimistic pachyderm and spirited pig. In There Is a Bird on Your Head! Gerald the elephant despairs over a family of birds that nests atop his cranium, while Piggie is delighted. And in I Am Invited to a Party! party expert Gerald helps Piggie prepare for all possibilities, as they get dressed for a fancy party, pool party and costume party-all at the same time. PW"It helps to have a best friend when you run into trouble, whether it's the what-to-wear-to-a-party kind or the wildlife-on-your-head variety. Like the first two entries in this beginning reader series (My Friend Is Sad and Today I Will Fly!, rev. 5/07), each of these books features a simple story told entirely through speech balloons and Willems's emotive pig and elephant characters. The animated illustrations will help new readers decode tone and meaning while the spare dialogue enhances the pictures' slapstick humor. High-spirited Piggie has never been to a party; when she receives her first invitation, neurotic Gerald takes charge of their attire. "I know parties," he claims, but Piggie and young readers may have doubts about that when Gerald insists they dress for "a fancy pool costume party." In the end, Gerald proves to be savvier than he and Piggie look. In the second book, two "love birds" make a nest on Gerald's head. Cause enough for panic, but when their three eggs hatch (in record gestation time), hysteria ensues. Luckily, Piggie has a good head on her shoulders. The minimalism of both the text and the uncluttered pictures focuses readers' attention and moves the stories forward. Party on, Elephant & Piggie! Horn Book"

Just be warned once you buy your child one of these books, you will eventually have to get the whole set!Not sure what it is about these books, but my daughter is obsessed. I work in education, so I can say that it's very common. Once one of my students reads one book, they cannot wait to read the rest of the series! These are simple easy books with simple graphics. My daughter is a 2nd grader who reads at about a 5-6 level, and she absolutely loves these books. She reads them over and over, and it takes her about 2 minutes to read one full book. Each of these books has a subliminal life lesson as well. They focus on feelings, without making feelings an awkward subject. Highly recommend them, even if your child is an advanced reader...they will still love these.I initally felt like they were a waste of money because they're so easy for my daugter to read, but after I saw how much she genuinely loves them, they were worth every penny. She especially loves reading them to her little cousins and friends. They have a lot of expression (yelling, excited, ALL CAP WORDS, sighing, sadness, etc.) So they help my daughter practice her expressional reading where she reads without trying to speed read or sounding like a monotone robot! :)

Mo Willems does a great job addressing children's feelings, relationships and dilemmas from their perspective. (In this case, Piggy's invitation to a party. What about Gerald?) These are acknowledged and validated while Gerald and Piggy sort things out and come to a satisfactory solution. Enables discussions on many age appropriate levels. The graphics and/or story appeals to my grandchildren aged 18 months to 5 years. My 11 year old granddaughter enjoys reading them to siblings and cousins. However, our discussions on a more nuanced and insightful level.

I absolutely adore Mo Willems' books. I guess you could say I adore Mo Willems. Tell him not to worry about me as I am an elderly lady who has no evil intentions. This book is hilarious. Children and old folks love it. It tickles me to death to read this book to little children. I have read it to so many little ones and it never gets old. Please, if you haven't you should buy this book

This book is one of many in the series. The stories, characters and illustrations are very sweet and very considerate of the needs of beginning readers. My kindergarten granddaughter loves them and is building a beginning reader library that she loves to read and reread, building her fluency and acquisition of high frequency words. The illustrations are highly supportive of predicting unfamiliar words.

My 5 yo can read the whole thing, it's my favorite thing to watch. I use the line "we must be ready!" All the time now when we have to get ready for something.

My 6 year old loves this series! This book is adorable and fun, we made a project of elephant from this book and had fun reading and creating. It’s a great book to build reading confidence in newer readers! Highly recommend the whole series.

This is my girls favorite book series. They hit major moral life issues in a fun easy way to understand for little kids. They are a quick read all done in speech between the two main animals. They are fun engaging books.

Elephant and Piggie delight my preschool class. This one is another hit. Elephant and Piggie have BIG emotions, and the way they show how the Big Emotions works is so helpful to some of the children in my preschool. They learn to say what their emotions are

Suzanne Collins (All About the Author), by Diane Bailey

From Booklist

Suzanne Collins went from being the popular author of the Underland Chronicles to the superstar author of the Hunger Games trilogy. Bailey, working primarily from several different source interviews, does an excellent job of tracing Collins’ life and showing how her experiences—as army brat, television writer, and devoted reader—shaped her writing. Though most of the focus is on the Hunger Games series and movies, this entry in the All About the Author series also discusses the origins of her books (her father’s experience in Vietnam was pivotal), the underlying messages, and how she approaches writing. The sidebars (e.g., the role of a TV series writer) extend the text well. Full-page photos vary in relevancy (a poster of Poe, an author Collins read as a child, seems an odd way to start the book), and there are no movie stills. Still, Collins’ many fans will relish this, and learn a lot, too. Grades 6-9. --Ilene Cooper

#14,457 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have read and own all the Child/Preston books, plus most of their individually-written books, in my personal home library. I've eagerly looked forward to each Child/Preston book as a chance to go on an often strange and always thrilling ride through the past, subterreanea, the supernatural, great horror, wonderful mystery, and more.I'ver enjoyed them all before this one because the richness and intricacy of their character and plot development, especially that of Pendergast, has been superbly crafted and made the books very special and exciting.Sadly, City of Endless Night completely misses the mark in all respects. It is, in essence, boring. Everyone seems to be sleep-walking through the book; there is no energy, even during the climactic action at the end of the book. And D'agosta has gotten colossally dumb somehow for a veteran street cop. This is, without a doubt, the worst book Child/Preston have ever added their name to. Before you criticize, remember, I have in my collection every single one of their volumes both collectively and individually so I think I have the reading creds to back my comments up.Perhaps the worst critique I can offer is that for the very first time with a Child/Preston book, I could not remember what was happening as I picked up the book again to continue reading. It seems I just did not care enough to vividly remember the story.I strongly suspect this was ghost-written like more and more authors are doing today. I just cannot believe that my contemporary literary idols Child and Preston, who individually now write such exciting and fascinating books, could have collaborated on this colossal waste of time and money.I shall investigate much deeper, and avoid pre-ordering before I plunk down my hard-earned loot for another Child/Preston book. From here on, if you want to read some still exciting page-turning books in the same vein, I highly recommend James Rollins as your author of choice. Rollins still writes like Child/Preston used to.Note to Child and Preston - I hope you get back on the roller coaster/scary house thrill ride you used to provide with your next (if there is one) book. I'm a devoted fan who would like to be able to believe in you again.

I've been a Preston & Child fan since "Cabinet of Curiosities." City of Endless Night does not even read like their work. Pendergast is somnolent--when he bothers to involve himself at all. The cops make stupid assumptions and mistakes--so out of character! Pages upon pages spent on a stupid chase, and the plot is juvenile with gratuitous violence. I spent over $15 for an ebook copy and it was money wasted. It's sad when you follow the work of two great authors only to see them deteriorate over time. The last few books have been awful and this one is the worst.

City of Endless Night is Preston and Child's 16th Agent Pendergast book and I have read them all at least twice. In most of them, the authors answer, in a Q & A section, the inquiry of whether their books have to read in order, or can they stand alone? I seem to recall that they recommend some books to be read in order, but they generally aim for the stories to stand on their own, independent merits. Well, I have to say, for the first time, that this has not happened. City of Endless Night is the first Pendergast novel that seems to be sketchily, hastily written, with flat characters, more than a little predictability—and it's just plain...dull. There are no hints of the bizarre and sometimes supernatural touches this time around—it's a straight murder mystery. Pendergast appears bored and listless and comes up with little that's new, prompting NY detective Vincent D'Agosta to exclaim over and over “Typical Pendergast! Classic Pendergast!” because it's the same old bag of tricks. D'Agosta himself is frustrated and angry from the first page to the last, quickly becoming tiresome and falling too easily into the killer's trap. None of the victims are likable—in fact, pompous New York Post reporter Bryce Harriman writes in several articles that they deserved to die! A silly subplot about a penniless preacher who's determined to save the sinners in a Central Park demonstration (already done in Pendergast #5, Brimstone) goes nowhere. At least we are spared the cold, insufferably snobbish presence of Constance Greene this time around, but if you haven't read the previous Pendergast books, parts of City of Endless Night will not make sense, and if this is your first Pendergast novel, there's likely nothing in it that will inspire readers to backtrack and explore the previous 15.

I have read every one of Preston and Child's Pendergast series. And while I have not always agreed with their direction (the silly, almost childishly slapstick murder of William Smithback) I have always enjoyed the books. Not every book in the series qualifies as one you cannot put down, but enough of them do to keep me coming back for more. While City of Endless night is not horrible, it simply seems not to be the authors' best effort. The pace is slow and halting through much of it, and even the endgame chase is not what I would call a page-turner. I was interrupted right in the middle of Pendergast's final battle with the villain and, rather than holding up a finger to plead for another moment in which to finish the chapter I found myself more than capable of putting the book down. Will I read the next Pendergast novel? Most assuredly. Will I be hoping and praying that the authors take some time to rediscover what has made this a beloved series, and perhaps rekindle their own excitement in the project so we avoid another lackluster effort? Definitely.

I agree with the other reviews. It was just lacking and not up to par. The ending was not believable. The sub plots so so. The epilogue was excellent. All in all, disappointing

A very weak effort.it was a disappointment after much anticipation. Not much of a plot.
