Even though the book contains dozens of mathematical or "quant" strategies, perhaps its most useful recommendation is always emphasizing that playing daily fantasy sports is a combination of both "science" and "art", and continuously reminding the reader to "not to lose sight of the forest for the proverbial mathematical trees," as the book convincingly points out success will always involve a combination of both.If there is one small shortcoming, it's that the author doesn't make available a download version (in Excel perhaps) of all the formulas used in the book. However, this criticism is very minor as the formulas are very straightforward and should be simple for anyone with even the most basic understanding of Excel or other spreadsheets to easily replicate for personal use.To conclude, I highly recommend this book and if the author is reading this review hope to see a follow-up to this book containing more advanced strategies!!

Incredible book that covers the overall view of fantasy sports and down to the nuts and bolts. It includes strategies for baseball, basketball, football and hockey. Good stuff!

Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books.On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for Kindle and in a rash moment, purchased them all.I devoured Rose Cottage and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid

I read Mary Stewart's books years ago and would look for them as soon as they were published. A while ago the books came out in e-books and I want to read them again. I found two that I have not read this one of them. This is a feel-good novel which I thoroughly enjoyed.The story takes place shortly after World War 2. Kate Herrick was married and widow during the war. Kathy grew up in Rose Cottage. It belongs to the Hall and her Grandparents were gifted to the tenancy by the Lord. Her grandfather was the estate gardener and her Grandmother was the cook. Kathy work at the estate on special occasions. Her Gran went North with the family. Her Mother left when Kathy was six years and later died in Ireland. Kate's Grans has decided to stay in Scotland and ask Kate to return to Rose Cottage and ship her belongs to Scotland. Kate has list items and is told about a wall safe with the family papers. The papers are missing and the neighbors tell her that her Mother with gipsy has been seen around the house. Kate and Dave found the hole that was dug near the cottage. There is a major twist to the tale. Who has been around the area? Are the gossips correct? Who put the roses on Aunt Bessie's grave? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Like others of her later works, this is a gentle story with a strong sense of place and a basic view that most people are good. I purchased it on Kindle for a trip and very much enjoyed reading it. Our main character is sent by her Gran back to the house where she grew up to remove some papers and family heirlooms, only to find they are gone. There is a mystery she has lived with her whole life--who is her father?--and now there is another mystery as to who would have taken these things, which are of only minor intrinsic value. You may figure out one of the mysteries before Kate/Kathy does, but you'll enjoy roses and simple friendship along the way.

Rural England in the 1940's. A young woman inherits a picturesque cottage from her aunt. The aunt was known as the local witch. Not a pointy hat, black dress wearing witch with a wart on the end of her nose, but a herbalist and naturalist. The cottage, gardens and neighbors begin to work their strange magic on the young woman and she finds herself assuming the position her aunt held in the community. A gentle, old fashioned romance set in a lovely, magic place.

As a teen and young adult I had enjoyed reading Mary Stewart's books, but hadn't seen any for several years. Rose Cottage is the last one she wrote before she passed away. It has good characters, but no real problem for the plot to solve, other than reuniting the main character, who is now an adult woman, with her mother. Naturally, she finds her own love while she's at it, but there is no real action towards this result. It is a very sweet book about going home to find her roots and childhood memories, and the odd characters in her old home town. It's not the author's best book, but it is a comfortable bedtime read.

The first book I looked for when I first received my Kindle was a Mary Stewart book. I was so disappointed to find only her Merlin trilogy. Now I am delighted to see that they are all now available. I bought them all!! I 've read her books several times over the years and I'm never disappointed. Rose Cottage is a lovely read, and you won't want to put it down. There are several typos in the editing that need to be corrected..

It's all about how you tell a story ... and Mary Stewart is a masterful storyteller. A different sort of mystery from her more suspenseful stories, but it's hard not to enjoy the telling of it...

The year is 1947. Kate Herrick is a young World War II widow. She barely knew her husband, but that hasn't stopped others from paying their respects. She has sought a new life in London. But then her grandmother calls one day. Could Kate go to the Rose Cottage and retrieve some papers? Kate remembers the Rose Cottage. It is one of the cottages at the English estate where her grandparents and aunt worked as servants. The Brandons, the estate owners, have always trusted her grandmother and have let her keep the cottage. Now Gran is in the hospital, nothing serious, or so she says, but is adamant about getting some documents from the cottage. There is just one problem: the documents are missing. The search for those papers unveils a web of lies, secrets, and all of sorts of sinister twists that Kate could have never envisaged. At least there is tall and handsome Davey to help her uncover the mysteries around her...Published in 1997, this is one of Mary Stewart's final efforts. The Rose Cottage isn't quite as good as The Ivy Tree or Nine Coaches Waiting, but it is a wonderful romantic suspense novel full of the atmospheric gothic elements that I enjoy and that could be expected from this author. It is a fast read, in first-person narrative and good historical aspects centered on post-war England. The secondary characters are great. The heroine is Stewart's special brand of courageous and naïve found in all of the novels I've read so far. Davey is also Stewart's standard alpha male. The twists and turns are well woven and developed -- better than most romantic suspense novels written by today's authors. All in all, The Rose Cottage is an enjoyable read. However, I'll stick to Stewart's older efforts from now on. I still have My Brother Michael and look forward to reading it soon.

This tiny book packs a powerful punch within the realm of self-help books. Camilla Sacre-Dallerup's writing is approachable and comprehendible without being degrading or dismissive to the reader. So often, books of this nature will make the reader feel as if he/she has done something wrong to be in a position to need/want to change their lives and only the author can "save them."Not so with Sacre-Dallerup, she has been where the reader is - realizing her life was not what she wanted and trying to figure out what to do and how to do it. She is a comrade in the reader's journey; telling her own story while explaining how to reinvent oneself even when there is no clue as to what is wanted - only the knowledge that change has to happen because what is currently in place no longer works and results in unhappiness.Of course not everything Sacre-Dallerup presents is applicable to every reader, such is always the case with self-help books, but her approach is thoughtful and useful. A simple outline of the word "reinvent" is her road map and she takes these eight key points and weaves them into a guide for improvement. There is an extensive “Further Reading” list full of excellent recommendations by many outstanding writers. Reinvent Me is not overwhelming nor is it minuscule in nature - it is solid and insightful and definitely worth the time to read. Sacre-Dallerup offers a positive, inspirational and highly motivated viewpoint to an universal issue faced by everyone at some point in time during their lives.

I just finished Camilla’s book and found it to be lovely. Even though I have already been through a successful reinvention, I still wanted to give the book a read since I have been enjoying taking her meditation classes in LA. Her book was extremely inspiring, straightforward, and uncomplicated. She outlined a complete plan that covers all the bases towards a successful reinvention. As I had suffered through a burnout and major career change, I know firsthand that it can be done and it doesn't have to be difficult. Camilla made it the book easily comprehensible for all levels with a guide of exercises and personal anecdotes at the end of each section, making the book very practical. My favorite parts of the book were reading the stories about others successful reinventions, one of my personal favorite success stories was Suze’s story about creating the unplug meditation studio as a pioneer in her field. Her story really resonated with me as I am creating a business that is unique and off the beaten path, many people tell me it can’t be done. I love hearing about brave individuals that go running towards their dreams! I’d highly recommend this book to anyone that is feeling stuck in their career or personal life and is looking for a simple, step-by-step plan to making changes actually happen. Camilla has a wonderful energy and it shines through the pages in this book, she is truly an inspiration!

One of the best books ever. I had the privilege to meet Orson Scott Card in a book signing once. I brought the Women of Genesis books (all 3) to be signed. He whispered to me, "The Women of Genesis is my most proudest work." Which is amazing considering he is famous for Ender's Game...but once you read this series you can understand why. It is so brilliant and really makes these Bible stories come alive.

A beautiful story from the Bible, given the depth and life it deserves.Orson Scott Card is a master of the twist, and there were several in this book I didn't see coming. It was a delight to read scenes from this story, knowing the conclusion but wondering how the characters would come to it. Card paints ancient Egypt in a light I've never considered before, brings honor and reverence to the shepherd life of Abram, and brings a level of realism to the debauchery of Sodom and the story of Lot's wife.As with many other stories from Card, I found the internal monologue of Sarai a bit much at times—I remember feeling similarly when reading 'Ender's Shadow' years ago. This didn't make the book any less intriguing, and I enjoyed the story and the characters from start to finish.

Orson Scott Card is well-known for his science fiction novels, especially Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1). Now he ventures into the stories of women of the Bible. Card himself states, "Women did not show up much in historical records."The book is a retelling of the biblical story of Sarah, wife of Abram. The setting is in the Middle East during ancient times. At the age of ten, Sarah meets Abram and falls in love at first sight. He pledges to come back and marry her and within ten years, he does. Card portrays Sarai as a courageous Hebrew woman from the house of Ur, always devoted to her husband, the patriarch, Abram. She deals with desert life, barrenness and jealousy. Their marriage takes her from Ur, a city on the banks of the Euphrates River in ancient Sumeria, to Canaan, Pharaoh's palace in Egypt, and back again.We can't possibly know if the real Sarai acted and reacted as Card writes her because the Biblical account of her is sketchy. In this book, she is a living, breathing, complex woman. Cultural and social details are there (not plentiful), but the overriding subject is Sarah and her relationships. She admirably tolerates her ever-complaining sister, Qira.I found it refreshing to read about Abram through the eyes of his wife.In this fictional account, the author combines historical and archeological details, the Genesis account and his imagination to bring Sarai to life. If you can accept that certain details are changed to suit the author's pen, you will enjoy this sensitive recreation of Sarai, wife of Abraham. Some of the male/female dynamics are not quite accurate due to the male dominated hierarchy of the time but they add zest to the story.I admire the author (male) for going out on a limb to recreate a biblical character (female). I wanted to like this book more than I did. I was somewhat put off because it was heavy on dialogue that sounded very modern.Reviewed by Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont

One of Card's remarkable talents is the ability to craft a character that thoroughly engages the reader's interest while remaining persistently unrealistic. His characters all seem so alive and fascinating to me that it startled me to remember that no one I know would think or behave in the ways he describes. And yet I like his characters so much, at least at first, that sometimes I wish I had a friend like them.This Bible story has many weird events that imply strong, complex players, a situation Card handles without many surprises. Lot doesn't really make an appearance whereas his wife is one of Card's stupid bullies. Perhaps Card's interest in having babies (Bean was my favorite of Card's creations before he inevitably became another outlet for Card's obsession with reproduction) helps him handle the handmaiden breeding issue with aplomb in this book. I'd often viewed Hagar's story as kind of puzzling but Card's spin is believable without sacrificing the integrity of any of the personalities.I really like both Card and the Bible, and this is well written and does bear Card's stamp of the occasional psychological showdown so I'm happy with this work overall, but in some ways I'd wanted to see something riskier and more surprising. Maybe it would be too blasphemous for Card to write the personality of God and have him debate strategy with Abraham the way he likes his child-warriors to do in other books, but that's what I would really pay a lot to see.

I love Biblical fiction. I love Orson Scott Card. I love this series. Of course, as Scott Card himself warns, if you believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, you'll be a bit bothered by some of the choices he makes. But, obviously, you can't read Biblical fiction expecting complete accuracy. I felt that Scott Card did a beautiful job bringing Sarah and Abraham and their adventures to life.

Having been through consciousness-raising in the late 60's around discrimination against women, I know how it feels to have the blindfold ripped off and to see things clearly that were completely invisible before. That is what this awesome book did for me around age discrimination. It's highly readable and meticulously researched while at the same time being trenchant and funny.In the days since I finished reading it, I've been observing my own attitudes and the things that happen around me in a whole new way. I see ageism EVERYWHERE, and not least between my own ears. Many of my own actions are motivated by the desire not to appear "old", and I need to work on that.If you hope to get old someday, read this book. If enough people do, and then take action, there might just be a chance that the world will be "older-friendly" by the time you get there.

I found this author through a New York Times editorial and was led to her website and blog, which I so thoroughly enjoyed. Is Ageism the "Last Acceptible Prejudice?" I've heard that said about casual anti-Semitism ("Jew him down"), casual homophobia ("that's so Gay!"), but jokes about "I've fallen and I can't get up are endemic without a second look. In my practice, I see long-term employees with good evaluations over a long period of time, suddenly deemed incompetent. I even, in one case, collected the data from the entire Board of Education of New York City and learned that statistically, teachers over 40 were more likely to be charged with incompetence than those under - and with each ten-year increase in age, the chances went up. The Court rejected the evidence because an arbitrator had accepted the testimony of the principal - a rule rejected by another part of the country. I took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, and my brief got some notice, but was not accepted for argument. Later, the Supreme Court made it harder for aggrieved employees to sue. Local laws, like those in New York City lessen the burden, but "out with the old in with the new" is presumptively accepted in the workplace, and the employer will find a way to get rid of an employee for some reason or another. People in my position must hunt for clues - like statistical evidence - and statements and negative treatment that will allow a jury to infer ageism. This author's book gave me so many insights (and now citations) to inferences to be made from statements and actions and I'm so glad I was surfing the web and found this wonderful and important book about fundamental human rights.

Many of you reading the word ageism will probably have a reaction similar to mine. Among the many negative -isms, racism, sexism, jingoism, authoritarianism--ageism was a barely perceptible blip on my radar. Ashton Applewhite's recently published book, This Chair Rocks--A Manifesto against Ageism--beautifully describes why we should care and, almost as importantly, why we should combat ageism. It is both a well researched treatise on ageism and its consequences and engaging personal story of a journey to understand why and how ageism is so prevalent in our society. Ageism is a wonderful example of the adage "We have met the enemy and he is us." What we all should remember is that the ageist of today is the elder of tomorrow. It is a challenging and important book and I hope you will all buy it and read it.

Ashton Applewhite presents a compelling way to view aging-along with descriptions (sometimes surprising, at least to me) of what ageism is. The book gives comfort to those of us dealing actively with leaving middle age (whatever that is, exactly) behind and entering new ground. Applewhite deals realistically with the challenges of aging while pointing out the many ways in which we can continue to evolve and contribute-to ourselves and the world.One point that particularly struck home was the fact that we are all, always, aging and that in rejecting older people, younger people are in fact rejecting their future selves. Our society has created an unrealistic box in which we place "the old" and everyone looks for ways to avoid being in this artificial box (while, of course, continuing to stay alive). Applewhite dispels many of the frightening myths about aging (for example, the idea of most people ending up as a burden only applies to a small percentage) and explores its many gifts.My only complaint about this book came from the Kindle edition I bought. In several places it was missing pages that made it hard to follow the book's progress. This is a sad fault that mars the reading experience of an excellent work.

A thousand lightbulb moments is the best way to describe this book. As you turn the pages you will think "yes, I noticed that and it made me wonder." As boomers get older there has been a glut of books on aging and most have focused on adapting to cultural stereotypes - slowing down, retiring, medical challenges - this is a shining gem in that stack because it is about debunking the myths related to aging, she backs up this premise with studies and facts, and she encourages people of all ages to raise our awareness of ageist behavior and call it out and question it.. Applewhite encourages you to not be defined by stereotypes - to live your life as you see fit. That might mean slowing down but it also might mean speeding up. As she notes we become more individualistic as we get older because we get to know ourselves better so why should we be influenced by a one size fits all definition of aging. The word "manifesto" is included here because it encourages activism and she gives you a toolbox full of ways to go within and to share with others. As for me she may have created a monster because as I got older I noticed more and more that the "standard definition" and stock photos of greying elders looking into the sunset had nothing to do with my life and I started to overtly question overt ageist content across media and culture in general and our profit generating obsession with "youth." I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Whether you are 12 or 102 this should be on your mandatory reading list.

I thought I would buy this book after Whitey was killed in prison to understand the biggest name in Boston crime and politics in the past last couple of decades. Not only did it reinforce what a ruthless and heartless family the Bulgers were but I learned many things I did not realize that had happened even though I grew up in Massachusetts. Howie does a great job detailing the paths of both brothers with a lot of detail. A good read and you will be astonished at what you learn. Highly recommended!!!!

I read this book after enjoying the movie, "The Departed." Howie Carr has certainly mastered the art of delivering a fast paced story, one that wraps inuendo around facts, dates, and personalities. He knows his subject matter, the Bulger Brothers, like a butcher knows a steer, and, he carves it up to a fare-the-well.The narrative opens with Billy, the politician brother, testifying before a congressional committee where he doesn't come off well taking the 5th. His brother Whitey, meanwhile, tops the FBI list of America's most wanted criminals spawning a cottage industry of global Whitey spottings over the last decade. Howie Carr clearly doesn't think much of Billy's lifetime of political fixings and seeks to tie him to his psycho criminal brother in the Bostonian version of a politico-fandango, true or otherwise. It's in a way too bad as Billy has risen from the shanty Irish mean streets of "southie" to be president of the state senate followed by a stint as president of UMass. Alas, his life of political corruption, shades of J.M. Curley's era, catches up to him, but not before he receives a handsome pension to ease his retiring years.Whitey, on the other hand, comes across for what he apparently is which is a pretty scary guy. He murders well over 50 people after getting out of Alcatraz in his early 20's. Carr leads the reader thru the various killings and maimings with the added feature of FBI corruption thrown in. Whitey was an FBI informant which made for a bad ending if you were his competitor in crime, and this is where Carr ties Billy to Whitey with the corrupted FBI agent fitting neatly into the mix, all a part of an all-star criminal class out of the southie end of Boston. And what a story it is as it reads like an endlessly repeating drive-by killing spree all juxtaposed with Billy's political operations shades of the Kennedy machine - ipso the Irish mob of Nicholson in the Departed marries the life of Danial Drew, he of Days of Erie fame. Nothing has changed, just the names.I'd recommend a book entitled, "the Bosses" to frame out the Billy side and perhaps Vinnie Teresa's, "My life in the mob" for the Whitey side. In any event it's a page turner which I looked forward to reading again after each time I had to put it down. All the Mass-politico names are there including Barney, Ted and J.F. Kerry. What a bunch!

If it wasn't for Howie Carr these two would have kept their undeserved reputations.......to a point. HOWIE IS the only one in the public eye that wasn't afraid to tell the real story. He also deserves respect as a lone voice in Boston against all the other corruption that continues to this day. This is the definitive book about the Brothers and their path of destruction whether it was mafia style murder or legalized laundering (Billy Bulger). I'm going Togo out on a limb and guess that Whiteys trial will be a fiasco similar to O.J. Simpson or something similar. As always Howie will be on the case and on the radio...great book Howie!

An extremely interesting book about two terrible individuals, Whitey Bulger was a ruthless killer who thankfully will now DIE in prison, but his brother who has escaped justice is also a reprehensible figure who played the system to his full advantage, and is a great example of institutional corruption. Sadly he has escaped Justice, but at least they got Whitey. Hopefully Howie Carr is writing the latest version which will include the just completed Trial of Whitey Bulger.

Howie Carr has captured the essence the evil of Whitey Bulger and the complicity of his brother, Billy. As someone who lived in Southie during that period he gives vivid testimony that South Boston is not a place, its a state of mind!!Brilliant descriptive narrative. He joins Elmore Leonard and Tom Wolfe in the pantheon of American novelists that understand the difference between the real and the apparent in the human spirit. His "Hard Knocks" is a must read sequel.

Being from New Hampshire I couldn't care less about mass corruption. The whole state is a nightmare and always will be. I bought this book to get a clue about what Howie is always talking about with these Bulger people. And now that I've read it, I suggest that every Howie Carr devotee read it, just so you know what the heck he is so obsessed with (no offense Howie but nobody really cares about this stuff since 911). You will be amazed though at how many FBI and cops were/are on the take. This stuff is only supposed to happen in the movies. Old movies! I wish you success with the book Howie. I can listen to you online down here in Miami but it's not the same.

Easy fast exciting read.Howie carr is the best.
