My son made his first dish today: Minestrone soup! It was delicious! We did unhealthified it quite a bit, but a bit of sugar & salt for taste.. My son is 8, & the directions were clear. I still needed to be there to keep him on track, & make sure he's following it correctly, but he did an awesome job! He's excited to try a few more dishes!Update 3/8 Made the pancakes before seeing the other reviewabout a pancake error, & we completely agree. They must've mixed the crepes on the page before the pancakes. Way too much buttermilk & extremely thin pancakes, so we overloaded our pancakes with maple syrup! :)

The recipes are ones my gradkids (7 and 10) are interested in making. However, there is a problem with the proofreading - there are errors in the recipes. The first thing my grandkids wanted to make were the Buttermilk Pancakes. I didn't have buttermilk, so we made a substitution with vinegar and milk. When the pancakes didn't turn out right, I thought it was our substitution. The next morning we used real buttermilk and they still didn't turn out right. Looked at my cookbook and noticed that the amount of buttermilk is wrong - should be 1 cup, not 2 1/2 cups. We had a similar problem with the S'mores Cupcakes - the frosting was runny. The Biscuit-wrapped Hot Dogs recipe worked out better that an other two. I recommend double checking the recipe amounts before making these recipes with your kids.

AWESOME cookbook for kids. Easy to follow recipes for good readers. Just had a 'chopped challenge' with two 8 year olds and a 9 year old and they made recipes independently (and LOVED it). The recipes are things our family would actually want to eat at a meal and not the typical lame kids recipes I found in most other kid cookbooks. It's something your little chef can grow with. I'll use some of the recipes myself. Most recipes have photos, but some (like a smoothie or ranch dressing) don't, which aren't necessary anyways. It has a great variety of recipes like: pizza dough, white bread, biscuits, pie dough, butterscotch sauce, kettle corn, fruit crisp, brownies, chocolate swirl cake, sloppy joes, french toast, eggs in a hole, yogurt pops, heart shaped scones, fruit and granola bars, guacamole, sesame noodles, fish tacos, tortellini alfredo, and many more! I went back and bought another book for a gift along with the kids chef knife set. This book exceeded my expectations for kids cookbooks. I like that kids actually will COOK with it, not assemble. It's great!

This book caused a cooking revolution in our house! My 3 children were fighting over who was going to make the next meal. The steps are really easy for the children (ages 11, 9 and 7) to follow. My only complaint is that there are only a handful of really healthy choices. Although we most certainly got them to buy in to enjoy cooking with the fattier recipes, I would like the next book to more some healthier options.

I bought this for an 8 year old boy. In the past he has shown an interest for cooking. It was awesome, I so scored getting my grandson this. It was for birthday not Xmas. He spent easily an hour going thru it looking at the great pictures and then at the chapter info in the front. He was reading cooking instructions and kept exclaiming "I can do this" By the time they went home he had a dozen things he wanted to make right away. It does have a spiral binding so lays flat on the counter and the pages seem like you could wipe them off with a damp cloth without damaging them. Of course he's 8 so somethings going to get damaged. In the meantime I am the coolest Grandma

I got this for my son who has been showing an interest in learning to cook. He absolutely loved it. Some recipes are simple enough for him to do on his own (he is 8) and some we need to do together. The recipes are not too hard and don't seem to include any obscure ingredients.

My 10 year old opened this among electronics, fashion, toys and games this Christmas morning. This book has so far gotten the most use! She right away volunteered to find a recipe to contribute to family breakfast, and we all enjoyed made-to-order crepes courtesy of the recipe here. She was very proud to do it with very little assistance (except stove supervision), and asked if we could start a new Christmas tradition of crepes for breakfast. They turned out great, and everyone was impressed. Now we're approaching dinner time and she is combing through the book for a contribution to make as a side item.In her words, other kid cookbooks she has looked at claim to be "expert" level but only go as far as the very basic food items with no challenge or feeling of accomplishment. This one made her feel like she was actually cooking (and she was!).It's pretty early to give a full review, but based on these initial experiences and excitement, I'd say this book is a winner.

My granddaughter (age 10) loved her new cook book and promptly made a recipe from it. She was quite proud of the meal she prepared for her Dad. The recipes in the cook book are easy and quick, just right for a young cook to starting learning how to cook.

I bought this for my 11 year old grandson. Mom is having each kid cook dinner once a week this summer. I asked him for his opinion about the cook book. His main negative comment was that there was no dinner category. He has prepared two of the recipes listed under Lunches for dinner and the rest of the family liked it.. He liked the pictures. One of Mom's objectives is to show two children how difficult it is to come up with meals that everyone likes, i.e., one kid loves cheese, one won't eat cheese. Some of the recipes are very simple, not much cooking involved.
