My son is taking a programming class in high school and wasn't quite getting it. We bought this as a supplement to his class and it has completely replaced it. He is ahead of everyone in his class as during his study halls he reads this book. He is quite pleased with it and wants to learn another programming language and we will definitely look at this publisher for that one too!

If you want to learn Java, this is the book for you. Herbert Schildt takes you through basic to more advanced topics, ecerything is nicely explained without complicated jargon. This is the seventh edition and covers the new released Java 9. Also, this is a great book as reference for more experienced programmers who wants to keep updated on the new features of Java 9.

Don't be fooled by the subtitle. Along with beginners, experienced JAVA programmers, or programmers coming back to Java after a few years away may also find this volume useful, along with the "Complete Guide". I fall into the latter category, and found it to be a good refresher of the language and a good introduction to the latest version of the SDK. It provides a lot of "Hey, I remember this from a previous version" type Q&A dialogs that help explain what has changed, and why. A great learning and reference tool.

This author has a long and successful history in writing great tutorials for the beginners. I just purchased this title to learn Java as I am a beginner to the language. The book is very detailed and truly is for the patient and serious learner. My main issue is that the entire book focuses on the command line and not an IDE. The author does state this early on but I wish Amazon had placed the same comment in the book description.Learning with the command line really gives you a fantastic grasp of the language, but it makes the process of learning much more difficult. With GUI being the norm and with so many IDEs out there, I am not sure why Oracle chose to go with a command-line only book. The book is all about reading and practice...which is great. But we really do not have many visual examples...again...because of command line. I am returning my copy to find another that makes learning Java a bit less daunting.

This book is really helping me get to grips with Java. I have bought a ton of books for a degree course I am undertaking. They all pale in comparison to this one. YMMV but this one works for me.

So far by what I've read, I have found this book very useful in learning Java, I've tried learning Java through online guides and forums but I've been learning Java a lot better through this book. this book truly starts from the very beginning it'll tell you some of the histories of Java also as an introduction which was very interesting to me.UPDATE: I do think Herbert could do a better job at defining certain words then help enforce the terms but that isn't worth taking a star away just a simple Google search here and there isn't a big deal. I also think some things can get a carried out a little too far and could be explained more simply and I also think some things can be a little bit more explained.But the book does have a way to just make you love it when that eureka moment hits it makes you wanna just keep going also it's a pretty good feeling.

What I didn’t realize was how appropriate it would be for this season of my life. All of us travel along rocky paths once in a while, but sometimes there are periods when it seems as though we are in the middle of a gale with a vicious onslaught that seems unrelenting. We love the mountaintop experiences we have with God, and although we do not often choose to also walk through the valleys, it is during those low treks that we learn the most. As we come to cling closer to the Lord, we come to know His lovingkindness and provision more deeply.Indeed, “[t]he compass that will lead you out of the storm is your ability to recount the miracles God has done for you and others in the past. The miraculous God of the land who provides for us in abundance is also the God of the seas who preserves our lives in times of peril.” The truth is, we are jaded. We have become desensitized and far too often can’t see the forest for the trees. There are so many miracles all around us each day that we don’t even acknowledge, let alone the miracles of healing and protection that the Lord grants. God has always been in the miracle business, and He still is! This is one of the points that struck me early on in this book; McLeod posits that when Jesus appeared to His disciples on the Sea of Galilee during a terrible storm, Peter asked if it was Jesus because he knew that if it was, then something even more miraculous was about to happen. We are safe in the Savior’s arms!In keeping with the nautical theme, McLeod shares that her anchors for the storms of life are the Word of God, worship, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. With this combination, there is no storm that can defeat us. God protected Noah and his family during the flood, after which He made a covenant promise to never again destroy all living beings while the earth remains. Noah’s story brought up two tidbits that snagged my attention: God wept over the flood, and he had given the people of the earth 120 years while Noah was building the ark to turn to Him, but they did not and so they perished. We have the same option today, and while we may not be facing a worldwide flood, what is at stake is our eternity.Likewise, McLeod’s section on Job’s story is enlightening. Job teaches us to worship while grieving and while waiting. Worship should always be our response, no matter what our circumstances. If Job, who lived before the redeeming power of Jesus set us free, could worship through his devastation, how much more should we! One of my favorite quotations from this book is that “Satan is still roaming the earth, but he no longer has the same power depicted in the book of Job because Calvary changed everything, for all of eternity. And you, my friend, have been given the authority and power of heaven to defeat him!” I am sorry to say that at times I give the adversary more power than is due him when I should be focusing on the unlimited and all-surpassing power of the Lord of heaven and earth, power that we have access to 24/7!“Storm Proof” is a thought-provoking, engaging read that packs plenty of punch and insight into its 256 pages. If this book had a soundtrack, it would be “Praise You In This Storm” by Casting Crowns. The Biblical stories and characters may be familiar, but McLeod offers a fresh perspective on their experiences and on how and what we can learn from them. Also interspersed throughout are some of her own personal recollections, which indicate that she has first-hand knowledge of life’s storms. Don’t we all? It was just as showen on the web site,beautiful pictures of horses. I am very pleased with it,numbers big enough for old weak eyes,a pleasure to look at,love horses.Thank you for beautiful calendar.Smoky

Calendar is nice enough but it was shoved in a mailer that was too small and it's bent. Not happy with a folded, bent calendar that takes away from the pictures...

This is a gift for my 84 year old uncle who has horses and he still loves horses he will love it

STOCKINGS AND SPELLS is a standalone read with a VERY satisfying ending. Lucy, the owner of Cardinal Woodley's knit shop, inherited from her Gran in Oxford, England is at it again. Lucy seems to always be in the middle of some adventure every time someone is found murdered. I LOVED this story. The whole time I was reading my stomach was rolling waiting to see what happens next and wanting them to get on with so I could find out who did it!! It is a great read, I think the best so far for this series.Lucy makes a new friend at the local Christmas market. The market is pretty much like the craft fairs we have around Christmas time. The young woman is clearly keeping a secret. She is not real open and at peace. Unfortunately, before they can become very close the woman is found in her booth where she was strangled. Lucy goes into PI mode and is determined to find out who tried to kill her friend and why. The plot thickens as an ex-boyfriend puts in an appearance and he too acts rather strange. The plot thickens even more when a local author, very famous for his fantasy novels he put out almost twenty years ago, (reminds you of Harry Potter) comes into the story.This story kept me riveted. I could not put it down. Nancy has done herself proud. This is a truly great story with a very satisfactory end. HEA in a way. It is not a love story but there are a couple of very interesting males that have shown an interest in Lucy. One is a vampire, Rafe, so we don't know how far that can go. He is hundreds of years old and Lucy is human and 27. The other is a detective for the local police. Ian is definitely interested but he moves rather slow!! Could be a British thing. Lucy has a big adventure in all the books. They can be read as standalone or read the series starting with book one to see how it all began. I definitely recommend all the books in this series. A very good series.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 11/29/18 LOVED IT.

Nancy Warren is back, with her latest entry in her Cozy Mystery series, the Vampire Knitting Club.Neophyte witch Lucy is still working hard on getting a handle on her witchy powers, when her vampire buds announce to her that they want to take part in the annual Oxford Christmas craft fair.....And guess who's going to be their go-between? As if she didn't have enough on her plate trying to deal with the day to day of running Cardinal Woolsey's and keeping hold of an assistant who didn't turn out to be a complete psychopath. But she's going to manage Timeless Treasures as best she can, without getting drawn into.....Oh, no! The sweet girl running the bath and body products stall across from her was just strangled. She's still alive, but will she stay that way? And who the heck could have done such a dastardly deed? Was it her nutty boyfriend that she just broke up with? Could it possibly be an ex-colleague of her father's, who insists her father plagiarized his work many years ago. Could it maybe have actually been her father, in the throes of a drunken rage? Join Lucy, Rafe and the rest of the gang as they race to discover who tried to murder Lucy's new friend Gamma before they return and finish the job! A wonderful, spooky good Christmas read sure to keep you guessing till the end.

I just finished the this fourth book in the series and all I can say is wow. I'm not usually a Vampire person but I love The Vampire Knitting Club. All three books are worth the read. I didn't notice any editing errors so if there were any they were minor. The main characters are engaging and very likable. The story plots are refreshing and new. I would recommend these books to anyone who like fun, mysteries, with a little drama. Too much drama turns me off. I'm so excited that book 5 is due in February.

I was hooked from the first chapter. Who knew vampires could not only knit at warp speed (which I would love veg to see), but be so generous with their talents. It wasn’t until the very end that I started to suspect who done it. From stolen manuscripts and false claims to who was the actual writer. To a stalker ex boyfriend. This tale had more drama than you could ever believe. The description of the market and the surroundings made me wish I could be there. I loved it!

I'm not a cozy expert but this series has gripped me completely. It's a wonderful mystery with multiple deaths, mayhem and unanswered questions. Delightful. Nancy weaves her world of vampires and woolens well. A fun read that would stand on its own even without prior knowledge of the Oxford circus she has created.

A successful booth selling stockings(knit by crafty vampires) in the Christmas market and a new friend. What could go wrong?So much!! But Lucy and her friends are on it.They'll solve that mystery and more.Love this series so much. Read them all!

This is the first vampire series that I have ever read. I avoid any book that includes them. However, I couldn't resist the idea of the Knitting Club. I am entertained and have been reading each book in order. It is lightweight and cozy, just what I enjoy.

I love this new mystery series that combines two of my favorite subject - vampires and knitting! This is a holiday story with fun characters. This was a nice Christmas gift from me to me.
