BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME by M. William Phelps is a well written true crime account of the murder of Jeanne Dominico by her adolescent daughter and 17-year old boyfriend. As another reviewer has already noted, the seemingly unending accolades about the victim's perfection and goodness become grating, because they persevere from beginning to end. Jeanne obviously had weaknesses as well, one of which was a lack of emotional intelligence.I found her responses to Billy and Nicole's perceived feelings for one another to be dismissive and sarcastic. Yes, young love often blows over and the two people couple with others eventually. But that thinking comes from experience and maturity--neither of which Billy and Nicole possessed.Jeanne never once sat down and tried to talk through the issues with the two while honoring the feelings. However, that in no way means her gruesome death was deserved. Rather it is in hindsight that it is easier to recognize how such a perfect storm could perhaps have been prevented. In addition, not only does the motivation for killing seem obsurd and lacking in understanding, it is also not clear who led who into murder--Billy or Nicole--as they both appear to be lacking in conscience or remorse.Yet, the writing and captivating storyline make this a great read even if some of the characters' choices and behaviors remain perplexing.

Book was so intent on proving the guilt of the parties who committed the murders, that it didn't explore the medical condition or consider the mental health of the perpetrators. It ignored the fact that this was not a cold killer sbut the actions of a teenager that had been in and out of mental health facilities all of his life and remained undiagnosed. The killer was currently and previously experimentally used by incompetent mental health providers for years. For the most part it presented a view of a saint the victim (while a good person nobody is that angelically perfect). It became repetitious and presented only the side of the victim. The verdict was not a surprise...there were no surprises in the book.

I'm on my 4th book in a row by this author, & I'm yet to be disappointed in the slightest. Each book tells the tale in a way which offers respect to those affected by the crime, but also in a way that keeps you turning pages to see what happens next, pure brilliance in every way, even if you've heard of the crime, you'll get so much more out of reading it through Mr Phelps books. I just wish that someone could tell me what to do when I run out of back catalogues of his work !

Jeanne Dominico is Perfect, loved by everyone except her daughter who conspires with a mentally unstable boyfriend for him to bludgeon and stab Jeanne to death. Except her son who is constantly fighting with his mother to the extent that he was at first considered a possible suspect. Except her ex-husband who "terrifies" Jeanne which, later in the book, appears to be a serious exaggeration of his character. Everyone loved her except those closest to her, her children and ex who best knew her.I am not vilifying the victim in this review; what happened to Jeanne Dominco is beyond excuse nor can any portion of the crime be attributed to her actions. But I am saying that the author presented a far from realistic black and white description of the murder and everyone involved in it. The world, its inhabitants and almost every crime committed are nuanced in shades of gray. I would've much preferred to know the real Jeanne Dominico, warts and all, rather than Saint Jeanne the Martyr.Even more so, I'd like to get inside the head of her daughter Nicole Kasinskas who casually reads a teen magazine while her boyfriend Billy Sullivan is beating and stabbing Jeanne to death less than a block away, then marches into the family home and steps over her mother's bloody body to retrieve evidence. When Nicole says she doesn't want to enter the house because she can't bear to see what happened, my initial response is that she's smart enough to not want to leave her own physical evidence at the crime scene.Billy Sullivan killed Jeanne Dominico, and without doubt he is a danger society. Being imprisoned for the rest of his life so he can't kill anyone else is where he belongs. Mental illness is no excuse for murder; but digging deeper into this young man's childhood trauma, genetics and psychological profile would allow the reader to better understand the demons that haunted him and how badly the system may have failed him as a child. As for Nicole, the dominant view is that she was controlled by Billy. However, in the end, she made the final decision to allow her mother to be brutally murdered. She read a magazine while the crime was committed. And when the s*** came down she casually sold out Billy for a reduced plea and 35 years instead of life.Check out her interview on YouYube conducted eight years later. I am left wondering who the real psychopath is...or perhaps who they really are. William Phelps should've spent a lot more time delving into these two criminal minds and a lot less time canonizing the victim.

sad story, but well written. First book I've read by this author, although I'm not unfamiliar with his work (Deadly Women) and was looking forward to reading his work, due to his enthusiasm in that series. Took me awhile to get used to the style of writing, present and past information in the same paragraph for example, but didn't hinder my understanding. Tragedy strikes in even the most "normal" of families. We can try as parents to do the best we can, but some events are almost impossible to prevent. It's difficult to comprehend how Nicole didn't inherit, at least by example, her mother's love and compassion.

Teenage girls need to read this book. I have read of several murders with similar circumstances.Basically, you have a teen girl who falls for a boy and becomes convinced that he is the love of her life. He's older, and the parent doesn't think the relationship is appropriate or healthy. So, the lovebirds kill the parent. This teen girl and her older boyfriend murdered her mom to be together. Only later did she discover that her prince had lied to her, misrepresented himself, and had another girlfriend.
