As Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command from July 2000 through July 2003, Tommy Franks led the American and Coalition forces to victory in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Unsurprisingly, the portions of American Soldier covering these wars are the most interesting because they combine military maneuvers, political wrangling, and lots of action and commentary. This does not mean, however, that the rest of his autobiography is dull. General Franks's writing is clear and engaging and his insider's perspective is informative and interesting, particularly when he explains how the military moved into the 21st century by emphasizing speed, agility, and better cooperation among the various branches--a significant shift from the first Persian Gulf war just a decade earlier. In addition to his years as a war general, his memoir also covers his childhood, his early years in the Army, his tours of Vietnam, and how he contemplated retirement before being called up as commander of Central Command, "the most diverse, strategically vital—and unstable—region of the planet." Ever the diplomat, General Franks offers insights, but little criticism of individuals. Other than expressing admiration for his own staff and for President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in particular, he is tight-lipped about any conflict within the administration that may have occurred regarding policy issues. (The one exception is counterterrorism specialist Richard Clarke. "I never received a single operational recommendation, or a single page of actionable intelligence, from Richard Clarke," he writes). He also writes that he was surprised by the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and that no WMDs were used against American troops. Still, the invasion of Iraq was justified in his eyes: "While we may not have found actual WMD stockpiles, what the Coalition discovered was the equivalent of a disassembled pistol, lying on a table beside neatly arranged trays of bullets." About the Author
General Tommy Franks retired from the Army on August 1, 2003. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1967 as a distinguished graduate of the Artillery Officer Candidate School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam. He also served as an Assistant Division Commander during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. General Franks has been awarded three Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Distinguished Service Medals, and four Legion of Merit awards. His other decorations include three Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, an Air Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal -- all with "V" for valor. In 2004 he was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. General Franks lives with his wife, Cathy, in Tampa, Florida.

General Franks is truly one of our great, practical, brilliant Generals. His book describes how he saw at an early age in the military that common sense isn't all that common. When he started buying off the shelf walky-talky's (because the military would not provide a method of instant communications) so he could quickly adjust his units artillery to defeat the enemy and to save the foot soldiers lives it was clear that here was-is a guy who gets it and who truly cares about his soldiers. He went on to a truly brilliant career and we should all salute him again for his phenomenal success as the commanding general in our ground war in Afghanistan et all. His description of his "political" battles to keep the "joint chiefs" out of his hair had me jumping up and down with appreciation. His relationship with Sec Def Rumsfeld was fascinating also. Tough but full of admiration by both of them for each other. General Franks has to be one of the really great American generals because of his concern for the average grunt. Thank you General Franks for your great service to our country and to your soldiers. Loved it............Cal
I wish this story had a happier ending as the struggle for Iraq continues to this day. General Franks certainly did his part and I believe he did it for all the right reasons. Perhaps it is naïve to think we (America) can solve the problems of this area that have existed thousands of years but with the world shrinking because of modern transportation and communication I believe we do have a stake in events in this part of the world. I have read several books on the events leading up to the war in Iraq and continue to be confused by the opposite sides taken by the pros and cons of this war. This book certainly details all the inner workings of the lead up and execution of war in this technological age. The references he has to his personal life with his wife and daughter shows a person can be tough as nails when necessary and still have a very human soft side.
Well written. Flows nicely. Interestingly covers his entire distinguished career from Vietnam to Iraq. His was a non typical path for a four star general beginning not at West Point but as an enlisted private after flunking out of college. It is an illustration of the old saw that anything is possible in America with hard work, talent, brains and luck. As for his role as the architect of the Iraq invasion, I began with some skepticism having read Cobra II by Michael Gordon. But General Franks put it all in context and ably defended his war planning and tactics. Although he didn't make the decision to attack Iraq he had the Caesarian task of planning the invasion. He makes it understandable why he would trust in his own judgement as a war planner rather than that of the armchair Generals of the Pentagon. He should have been given the same latitude in the aftermath of the actual invasion as things might have been different. The great Generals of the past would be proud of Tommy Franks as should America.
A very informative and interesting account of General Frank's time in the military. Much tactical information, which I found quite interesting. Also, a lot of personal information about the General's upbringing and his career. A very smart man, obviously, who served his country well. I enjoyed it. I never thought I would be so caught up in the mechanics of war, but I have read seventy plus non-fiction books on all wars from WWI on, and found it all so interesting. I can't even begin to tell how much I have learned, and will always be glad that I did. Thank you for you service General.
I am not usually interested in autobiographies, however I began to hear good things about this one to the point where I dedcided that for the purpose of my education, if nothing else, I should read it. I am delighted that I did and very rewarded. General Tommy Franks certainly did not start out in life to be the man he has become. Being a soldier was not even on his radar screen until his interest in fast cars, the opposite sex and alcohol superceded his interest in studying at the University of Texas and was advised by the authorities that he would not be readmitted after being on academic probation for a year. He could reapply in six months. As Franks himself puts it, "I was too spoiled, unfocused and immature to get much out of college. I had a lot of growing up to do." Enlisting in the Army, he started the process of growing up and finding himself. His story of going from an enlisted man to Officer Candidate School and rising through the ranks is both interesting and inspiring. His story gets most interesting as he recounts his adventures as Commander of Central Command (CENCOM) and the waging of the War on Terrorisim in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is told from the point of view of a man who does not suffer fools well and who has seen the problems that can occur when politicians and generals try to micromanage a war. He fought in a war like that also - Viet Nam. Lessons were learned and remembered. Franks gives the reader insights into many of the names in the headlines and also how the media misreports what is happening on the battlefield and in the area of the war. He holds strong opinions and he is willing to share them. This is not your usual autobiography. It speaks to the reader, it educates, it inspires and it puts matters into focus. Focus is something we all need in these times. In reponse to the question he is frequently asked, i.e. is the price America is paying in blood in the war on terrorisim worth it, he has an answer that we should all listen to. "Of course." he says. "I defer to no man in my love of troopers. I consider myself a soldier. But it has often been necessary in our nation's history to fight for our freedoms, and it's never been more necessary than today. It seems to me that fighting terrorisim has more to do with our kids and grandkids than with us."Interviewers sometimes ask the question, "If you could have a meal with anyone in the world, who would you pick?" General Franks would be on my short list. This is an important book, written by a serious and principled man. It is worth your time to read it.
This book made me cry, laugh and just be so proud of our military. Tommy Franks is a great American. I hope and pray that there are more like him and that our government lets them do their jobs.
