Very disappointed in this coloring book. I had preordered it based on the Fairies in Dreamland book...which I loved. The images are blown up so much that they look like something a six year old might want to color. There are a lot of pages with just a "filler" image. Don't waste your money.
I admit to being a fan of Denyse Klette's artwork before finding her coloring books. I loved the first coloring book, “Fairies in Dreamland†and looked forward to and preordered this book. My only issue with the book (besides wishing the pages were perforated) is that the title might more accurately have been “Mermaid and Friends in Paradiseâ€. While most of the designs include mermaids or mermaid related items, a good number are of the cute little pig from the prior book, birds, fish and other assorted sea creatures (really cute octopus.) As there are 64 designs in this book, the fact that the designs are not all of mermaids doesn't trouble me too much.The book has 64 design pages (including the title and presentation pages which have designs on them as well.) Ms. Klette's signature style female form is long and thin with beautiful big eyes. Her mermaids such this to perfection (though I did like that a couple of the mermaids were a little more curvy.) Her animal creatures are cute and fun with great expressions.I love that she worked in a Princess and the Pea image into this book as in the last one (this time a mermaid sleeping in an oversize shell with a kind of large pearl below. I especially like the last design in the book which is of a mermaid holding a cute little fairy in her hand – it brings the two coloring books together in a great way.The designs are detailed and some are quite intricate with lots of tiny details to color. To color some of the tiny detail, I will need to use extra fine nib pens or extremely sharp pointed pencils. Otherwise, regular color medium works great.This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing it with my coloring medium.64 Cute and Fun Mermaid and Friends Designs by Denyse Klette (includes title and presentation page.)Printed one side of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly rough and non-perforatedGlue BoundMost designs merge into the binding area; however, nothing integral to the design is lostI can get the book to lay fairly flat with some effort (it is a thick book); however, coloring into the binding area will take some maneuvering (how I wish this book had perforated pages!)Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quicklyWater-based markers and India ink pens leave shadows (some showing the color) on the back of the pageGel pens do not bleed through but some larger nib pens required additional drying time. I suggest testing your pens to be sure they won't accidentally smear.Colored pencils did well with this paper. I tested various types of oil and wax-based pencils and they all performed well with multiple layers of the same color for deeper pigment, multiple layers of different colors, and blended easily with a blender stick.I am using and suggest the use of a blotter page under your working page. I use card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper. This will keep seeping ink from getting to the pages below.
Mermaids in Paradise is an adult coloring book. The Whimsical mermaids are beautifully drawn by Denyse Klette. There are 64 pages of great pictures to color.The paper is excellent quality. The pictures are single sided.My favorite book by the artist is Fairies in Paradise, Fairies in Paradise the pictures look like they are more for adults. The mermaids pictures are nice but look more like a book for the younger group.
I have the Fairy coloring book and it is just exquisite! I'm so disappointed in the Mermaids coloring book.SO many pages of tikis without mermaids on the page.SO many pages of fish without mermaids on the page.Alot of the Mermaids are wearing glasses.Alot of the Mermaids have drinking glasses with fish in them, like cocktails.I was expecting the same quality as the Fairy coloring book, and it's not.There's about 6 or 7 pages that i sort of like.Maybe I'm too serious about my mermaids and fairies, or I'm just a big baby, but I'm not happy with it.
I absolutely loved Denyse Klette's previous coloring book Fairies in Dreamland so much so that I bought it twice. I was counting down the days to when I could purchase her new book, this book Mermaids in Paradise and I have to say with a heavy heart that it is not nearly as good as her first although I do like this coloring book as well it just doesn't seem to have the variety that her previous book did the pictures seem to feel as though they are a lot alike and make me feel as though I am looking at the same images repeatedly they are still good but I just wish that it had much more of a variety and I just didn't get that feel with this book this time that is why I took off one star. I am hoping that her next coloring book will have more of a feel of Fairies in Dreamland and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next because I really do enjoy her work.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! I first purchased her fairies in Dreamland book and spent days using my gel pens and pencils! I waited for this one for awhile and it is even more fun!!!! The pictures while just as intricate, are a little larger and just as addictive!!!! The paper quality is lovely as well. I don't like to color on the crappy create space paper. My extensive collection of only high end pencils deserve good paper!! I will be jumping on any other books this artist brings out!!!! Just. Fantastic in every level!!!
One of my favorite coloring book artists. Designs are printed on one side, I like this because I frame my work and give as gifts to family and friends. The paper quality is excellent. I use a lot of glitter gel pens with her books because her designs are whimsical! Give her books a try, you will be entertained by her illustrations!
Denyse Klette's talent is extraordinary. I adored her first coloring book "Fairies in Dreamland" and she has outdone herself with "Mermaids in Paradise". The paper is very good quality, single-sided and not perforated. The only issue I have is that the images go into the binding.The book is whimsical and so much fun to color. I use good artist grade pencils so I can't speak to how the paper reacts to any other medium. "I highly recommend Mermaids in Paradise"; because it is simply one of the best.
Fun and well done. Most of the pictures cover the full page, which is a major bonus these days in coloring books. 4 stars for that.This review is getting 3 stars due to the poor paper quality. Yes the paper is a nice and thick, but it has no tooth. My Prisma's started tearing up the paper even when applied lightly. Any type of blending media was a nightmare. Yet, I still like the book and would recommend it because of the content.
