Today's news reporting and book literature is slowly reflecting the emerging cancer research and treatment landscape - targeted, specific and narrowly effective. The first book I read that described this new cancer universe was "Her-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer."In "Philadelphia Chromosome," author Jessica Wapner describes how chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) went from a painful and fairly rapid death sentence to a largely chronic condition managed through Gleevec, an orally-administered drug that targets cancer at its genetic level.Wapner writes a gripping, yet restrained, tale that recognizes both the promise and limits of this new approach to the age-old problem of cancer. She profiles Brian Drucker, the doctor who championed the development of the drug, as saying, "if I told you I could give you a pill that was going to put your cancer in remission with no side effects, would you believe it?"For the 5,000 patients diagnosed each year with CML in the U.S., the answer happily is, "yes." And given the devastating side effects and oftentimes futile results from the mainline cytotoxic cancer treatments, the answer desperately needs to be "yes." Wisely, though, as tempting as it is to extrapolate the miraculous success of Gleevec to larger arenas in which the cancer fight is still taking place, Wapner doesn't overreach. For this reason, besides the outstanding reporting that narrates the personalities, forces and science that unraveled this complex disease and discovered its one-of-a-kind cure, Wapner's book gets 5 stars.

This book was well written and understandable to a non-scientist, such as myself. That is not to say, however, that I wasn't sometimes confused about how all the different people whose discoveries came together to lead to the discovery of Gleevec fit together. The author jumps back and forth a bit and there were a lot of names and patients to keep track of, and I had to stop and try to recall who we were talking about. And I'm not a biochemist and since my chemistry in high school days are long gone, I had to look up a bunch on wikipedia to refresh my recollection of cellular processes. Although, I'm not saying that this book isn't well written. Far from it. The author uses good analogies to help the reader understand the cellular processes. Without that help, I would have been lost. The Philadelphia chromosome has had an unfortunate effect on my family. I have had a 3rd cousin die from leukemia who had received a bone marrow transplant, a first cousin die from cml with the philadelphia chromosome, and a nephew with ALL with the philadelphia chromosome survive because he got to take Gleevec. My first cousin with CML went into blast stage a short couple of months after Gleevec was featured on the news and he was unable to get the medicine that would have saved his life. So, this topic is very real and personal one to me and this book helped me to understand the process of the disease and the miracle of the discovery this book speaks of. I just wish the 3 years of stalling on the beginning of trials had not existed, because those were the 3 years that my cousin could have got on the trial and lived. He left four children and a wife. He was the sole support and comfort of his family. I miss him.

This really was a great book for me to read. I loved doing research in med school. But I've been teaching for several years premed and nursing students. I had heard about the Philadelphia Chromosome in all of my textbooks, but they don't say as much about it as they could have...so I absolutely needed to read this book. I don't think people realize the amount of time and work it takes from having an inkling about something going strange in the human body, and taking it to a conclusion that will possibly help people. USually it takes decades and many, many groups and people involved in figuring several different pathways to the same ending to finally decode where the problem lies.Chronic myelogenous leukemia is one of the nastier cancers out there. I knew people who got this and died from it. There was almost nothing to treat it. It was like pancreatic cancer is now...we would kind of shake our heads, and cry...because it was a death sentence. But there was someone who really observed what was happening between two chromosomes. Usually when we copy chromosomes they don't have a problem, but every once in a while, a chromosome will delete something or invert something...and what gets made by that chromosome (DNA goes to RNA goes to proteins) gets made wrong. In this case, it was an enzyme...and that enzyme led towards cancer. CML is usually an older person's disease. Why? Because as we get older, our ability to repair mistakes in our cells get significantly less. This book follows the many great people and corporations who worked on this problem, in order to find something that would heal this disease. I'm impressed with the story, impressed with the people. And I was impressed with the wriiting of the author. A much needed to book for people who know nothing about doing research. REsearchers do not get the fame they should ever...but they should!Having said all this about this being a great book...I didn't like the ending of the book because it sounded like a shill for the pharmaceutical companies. Most research is done by universities, and the pharmaceutical companies usually get the end of the research and make money off of it. I do admit the corporations here did a lot more than many of them do...but it really makes me wonder if this book was paid for originally by the companies pushing this particular drug. It saves lives, but to me this smacked of a book that was subsidized to make Big Pharma look good, when currently they do way too many things wrong.
