This bite-sized book is a good reminder of the importance of a positive-sum, altruistic focus in business. The lessons and “Laws†presented in this book hold value and are likely embodied by most entrepreneurs who have built successful businesses.I’d recommend this book to someone who is looking for a super-quick and light read on mindsets, perspectives, and motivation behind achieving success in business. This is a good book to have in your tool belt when you need some motivation or want to reevaluate how you approach business.I cannot give this book more than three stars because of its over-simplicity, particularly in relation to the absolutism of the language used to support the book’s ideas.I particularly don’t appreciate how the authors’ had Pindar use the word “Law†to describe his lessons. It devalues what otherwise are helpful and very positive lessons to live by. The authors cleverly divert the need to provide a lick of supporting evidence while still getting away with calling their ideas “Laws†by presenting their ideas through a parable. The story fails to adequately provide support for its confident assertions for success. Not to mention Pindar’s prophetic promise of “stratospheric successes†to come from following the laws. If you’re going to dub something a “Law of Stratospheric Successâ€, far more justification is necessary than a mere short story.Yes this is only a story, but their “Law†clearly is intended to be applied to life and a Law implies causation. If the authors had accurately dubbed them the “Principles of Stratospheric Successâ€, I’d have far fewer issues with this story.I don’t doubt the legitimacy in the inherent lessons proposed in this book. But I feel obliged to add that, like many motivational / self-improvement books that I’ve read: the tone is grandiose and flirts with omniscience, the messages are oversimplified, the teachings promise gargantuan levels of success, and therefore this book must be taken with a healthy dose of realistic thinking, trial-and-error via application in your own life, and skepticism.
As a story, this little novel is fairly entertaining. As business advice and life advice, it hits a home run. I have a feeling that the more jaded among us might see it as a threat to their world view. How can it possibly work to seek to give to others and expect that to return? But it does. And it does in spades. The more we all focus on helping others succeed, we can reap more reward ourselves. I have seen it in my own business for sure. Whenever I lose sight of why I do what I do, my business suffers, or I have to compromise my ethics. This book gives 5 simple rules for success, and they are awesome. Great reminders of how to be successful, and where to keep the aim of what you do. I highly recommend this book.
The concepts explained in this book should be mandatory reading in all the schools in the country. They apply to business but also in all that we do in our personal lives. If we all started to give and to cooperate, to collaborate extensively, and to put the others before us, all would change for the good. I would encourage everyone to give these theories a try and get back to the authors of the book with sensitive evidence of the results. Thank you, Bob!!!
A very short, easy read that's in story format. A young man, Joe, goes to a known mentor with one idea in mind and walks away with much more. It reminds me of "Give a man fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Joe learned to fish using these five "laws":1. THE LAW OF VALUE - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.2. THE LAW OF COMPENSATION - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.3. THE LAW OF INFLUENCE - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.4. THE LAW OF AUTHENTICITY - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.5. THE LAW OF RECEPTIVITY - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.Certainly work reading because it is a good reminder that success depends on helping others first.
