It feels honest. I'm not done with it yet, but I want to finish it. It is an interesting glimpse into a world I simply do not know.

Alastair Henry’s story begins with a recurring dream of a path littered with obstacles. When he speaks to a carnival fortune teller, she imparts, “The road is your future, your destiny. You will have many obstacles to overcome in life, but you will overcome them through patience, persistence, and plodding! I see a lot of travel in your future, mostly by yourself. You will never settle down in one place for a long time.”This of course is the story of his journey. Henry begins with his family in England, as they grew up in a time of changes (the author himself was born three days after D Day). His father cut cloth for a furniture manufacturer and his mother worked part time at a cotton mill making and serving tea. The children all shared a single beat-up tricycle. He adds, “We sensed we were the most important part of their lives, but their severe Victorian upbringing had conditioned them to regard any show of emotion as a sign of weakness.”With an adult perspective, Henry considers the rigid teachings of church and his struggle through adolescence, constrained by the strict morals of the time. He describes surprising adventures, such as crossing the world for love at just age eighteen.Henry goes on to consider his anxiety and dissatisfaction around age forty. Some time after, he found himself eyeing the Northern Territories of Canada, above the 60th parallel. At last, he moved to the small community of Lutsel K’e to live in the aboriginal community. There he describes culture shock and “awakening” as he meets the locals and tries sled excursions in the real frozen wilderness. These blend humor, adventure, and pathos as Henry has real escapades far from civilization. Finally the local children (of whom there are only twelve) play pranks that spiral out of hand and lead to a great feeling of violation and betrayal from the otherwise warm community. Nonetheless, he perseveres and uses his optimistic philosophy to put the incident in context and rise beyond it.Family photos dot the narrative and provide context. Throughout, Henry’s vivid details of daily life paint a clear picture for readers. It’s very expressive and also reflective on what his experiences have meant to him. While his dedication attests that this is for his family, memoir lovers will delight in this poignant and well-thought out tale of personal growth and the search for meaning in a far-off land.

I was pleasantly surprised by this memoir. It was a page turner and speaks to all man.In it we follow the fortunes of a man from an underprivileged background and with a repressive mother who has very little confidence, but manages to overcome it. Determined to better his family's life (and his own), he studies while working at a job, and he then scales the ladder of the commercial world.However, approaching fifty, having gone through a divorce and feeling somewhat disillusioned with his life, he goes to work in the Northwest. There,he encounters an entirely different world and has to make great adjustments to an altogether different society in order to do his job and fit into his new community . This is the main part of the book, and in it we are shown the strange, laid-back and fascinating world of the Nene, who although a splendidly,resilient people, have several flaws. The author, however does not simply describe their ways - each story he tells shows how they are. This is instructive story-telling at it's best.Some of the stories are hair-raising, some are humorous and some are tragic, and although you might tell from the writing (simple and clear) that the writer was an accountant in his former life, rather than a literary figure, all is very crisply described, and it reads with a flow. Fortunately for the reader, he does not dwell on the break-up his various relationships, and unlike many other memoir writers; these are simply mentioned and not dwelt upon.Through what he writes, we see how his view of the world is changed, and how he ends up reading Buddhist writings, and eventually goes off to work on aid projects. (Then that's covered in his next book which I' haven't yet read.)An altogether illuminating book about one man's odyssey/leaning curve and finding a final equilibrium.

I'm not part of this book's target audience (Boomers) so I admit to having some initial reservations (was I gonna get anything out of this book or was it going to be a boring read?) but those were all dispelled within the first few pages."Awakening In The Northwest Territories" follows one man's life from growing up in a strict English household to his move to Canada to his retirement to his subsequent search for fulfillment. It's an engrossing read, you will learn a lot about the Dene culture (he takes great pains to describe them and their way of life) and the various challenges they face. I found myself wondering how to let them keep their own culture (and not only them, other people like them) while helping them harvest the benefits of ours (Like: how do you keep them living in the moment while also bringing in the benefits of planning for tomorrow? Still haven't figured it out.).I also found myself reflecting on my own life, this book will definitely encourage you to do so as well. Although Mr. Henry and I are at opposite ends of the spectrum (He retired and me just beginning my career) I too have wondered why we strive so hard for money when there's much more to life. What things are the most important in the long run?To sum it up: this is a thought-provoking memoir and I highly recommend it to all ages. You will not be disappointed you picked it up.Note: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
