Inky crows wheel over spindle-fingered pollards; jackdaws pepper the ocher grainfields; and a magpie, flashing black and white, drags a long, iridescent tail through the damp air. These are the 16th-century landscapes of Pieter Bruegel the Elder — stained-glass planes in sepia tones, leaded by black branches, crooked spires, dark-frozen streams.And these, too, are the 20th-century landscapes of Belgium and Luxembourg — a wedge of northern Europe squeezed between the massive and ancient kingdoms of France and Germany, bounded by the harsh North Sea to the northwest, defined by the rough, high forests of the Ardennes to the southeast. No wonder so much of their appeal, past and present, is interior — their weather-beaten cultures have turned inward over the centuries, toward the hearth. Indoors, Bruegel's otherwise sepia scenes warm subtly with color —earthy browns, berry reds, loden greens, muted indigos, coral cheeks. So it is today: the Flemish nurse goblets of mahogany beer by candlelight in dark-beamed halls, a scarlet splash of paisley runner thrown over the pine tabletop; red-vested Walloons — French-speaking Belgians — read the newspaper in high-back oak banquettes polished blue-black by generations of rough tweed. In Luxembourg, the glass of light beer and of eau-de-vie go down behind the candy-color leaded glass of spare, brightly lit or pubs, where village life finds its social focus, day in, day out. In these small northern lands, so often lashed by winter rain, soaked by drizzle, wrapped in fog, the people live out the rich-hued interior scenes of the Old Masters.Yet the skies do clear, come spring. Then the real pleasure begins — an intense appreciation that residents of more moderate climates would be hard-put to understand. As if the people's gratitude took physical form, it manifests itself in flowers, a frenzy of color spilling from every windowsill, over rose trellises, through wisteria-woven archways. Fruit trees explode like fireworks, and whole orchards shimmer pink. Chestnut branches sag under the weight of their leaves and the heavy, grapelike clusters of blossom that thrust upward, defying gravity. In the midst of this orgy of scent and color, Flemish farmers in blue overalls open their half-doors and bask, and the international bankers of Luxembourg swing their Versace suit coats over their shoulders and head for the benches in the green Pétrusse Valley.Then café society, and home life with it, moves outdoors to bask in the warmth. Terrace cafés on the Grote Markts and Grand'Places rival any piazza in Italy. And when there's no café around, the family simply sets out a cluster of folding chairs, perhaps a checkered-cloth-covered card table, whether smack on the sidewalk or behind the barn door, to make the most of fine weather. A suntan remains (as it does in sun-starved North Germany) the most sought-after of status symbols — doubly prestigious if flaunted in midwinter, as northerners, once pale and prune-skinned, return from the ski slopes of the Alps or the beaches of the Canary Islands. The shared climate, from inexorable gray to luxurious sun, may form a common bond, but Belgium and Luxembourg sustain distinct identities.Belgium is a country torn in half, split by two tongues and two cultures. The division between Wallonia and Flanders traces back to Merov ingian times, and the Walloon patois and Belgian French represent the last northward wave of the Roman Empire and its lingual residue. Twice in this century Flemish citizens (and possibly a king) were known to collaborate with German invaders, allying themselves against what they saw as French-speaking domination. In turn, francophone Belgians, made powerful by their region's blossoming heavy industry, looked down upon their Flemish countrymen: the country's constitution was not translated into Dutch until 1961. Today the bickering over bilingual rights — which leaves Brussels a no-man's-land, with extra-wide enamel signs naming every street and alley in two tongues — is especially acute. Many intellectuals believe politicians on both sides are whipping up national sentiment, when they should be looking at urgent matters like reform of the police and justice system.The cultures are as different as their languages: the Flemish are proud and tidy, their homes filled with the exterior light that pours in through tall, multipaned windows; a spare, avant-garde current in fashion, film, and literature shows their Dutch leanings. The Walloons, on the other hand, remain more laissez-faire, their homes often dark, cozy, and cluttered with knickknacks and lace. A women's clothing shop in Gent is likely to include progressive, trendy, severe clothing, while the equivalent in Liège will show cardigans, A-line skirts, and fussy floral prints. These two separate worlds share a Catholic culture that, beyond the spiritual realm, finds expression in a shared appreciation of the good things in life, such as the pleasures of the table.While Belgium is a picture of inner conflict, the natives of little Luxembourg present a solid front to the outside, interacting in French, German, or English, but maintaining their private world in their own native (Luxembourgish). Thus, having survived centuries of conquest and occupation, they can open their country to European Union "Eurocrats" and more than a hundred international banks, and still keep to themselves. Luxembourg sustains two parallel cultures, with some cafés catering to trendy, international, or tourist crowds and others reserved for the loden-coated locals, who may greet an aberrant visitor with stunned silence as thick as the cigarette smoke that fills the air.Belgium and Luxembourg, having been conquered and economically dwarfed for generations by their larger neighbors, felt compelled in 1958 to join with the Netherlands in an economic alliance that served as a foundation for the European Union. So far it's awesome!!!I've had it since Sunday and used it to reference words in my medical terminology textbook. It was really helpful because frankly, my textbook stinks! Monday I took a test on the two chapters we studied and I got a 90%. I don't think I would have done as well if I hadn't used it to study.PSI'm using this for nursing school

This dictionary is super helpful! I take medical coding classes and I don't know how I survived them without this dictionary. It has every definition that you can think of and it also has abbreviations in the appendix. It also includes pictures and it has an anatomy section in the middle of the book. I definitely recommend this dictionary to anyone in the healthcare field!

I recommend this book for anyone who is taking an CCS exam from AHIMA. There were questions on this exam that nurses would know. What drug would be used to treat gout? What test would be ordered to check for cancer? The info in the back of this book helped me so much. After I finish the test I went back and corrected the answers I wasn't sure about and corrected them using the info in the back of this book. I passed the exam. I say buy this book if taking those exams.

I'm in nursing school and I'm one to look up things as I come across them. I've used it several times already. Great for a quick definition.

I am working towards a Medical Assistant degree and found this book to be helpful. I can look up prefixes for medical words and this book has pictures too that help with understanding. It is easy to follow and easy to read. It also has a bonus CD rom and a free 1 year subscription to Stedman's Online. Glad I bought it!

Had to use it for a medical terminology class I took, and it was very helpful! For quite a few words it had accompanying pictures, which was a nice touch. Even though I switched out of the nursing program I was in, it's still very interesting to look through, and extremely user-friendly!

An excellent introduction to Thomism. Feser's familiarity with modern analytical philosophy allows him to respond to the most common, and probably the best objections, raised against Thomistic metaphysics and Thomism in general.An important caution: this is not a "beginner's guide" in the sense that it is for those who have absolutely no prior exposure to philosophy or rigorous argument. I can say this because, prior to this book, I myself had no prior exposure to philosophy or rigorous argument. I had many questions and had to get answers elsewhere. This is no fault of Feser; my questions did not have to do with the validity of his reasoning or the clarity of his terms – I simply was not well acquainted with philosophy, having never even taking philosophy 101 in college. For anyone else who is in my position, you are in luck! Feser runs an excellent blog at edwardfeser.blogspot.com. I picked up a habit of googling "Edward Feser [insert topic of confusion]" and it's allowed to me better grasp the content of this book.The chapter on metaphysics is difficult but critical and it sets up the rest of the book. If you're not getting it, moving on is, in my humble opinion, futile. Once you do get it, however, the rest of the book will not be as difficult.For atheists, the chapter on Natural Theology will be of most interest. Again, if you are unfamiliar with Aristotletian or Thomistic metaphysics, you won't do yourself any favors by jumping into the chapter on Natural Theology. This isn't pop philosophy a la Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens, or Dennett; you have to actually do intellectual work to meet Aquinas and Thomism halfway. If you do do this work, this chapter just may change your life (who needs self-help books when you have a disciplined pursuit of Truth?). Feser goes through Aquinas' 5 Ways to proving the existence of God and defends them rather exhaustively against various objections.The remaining two chapters, on Psychology and on Ethics, are also excellent. The section on natural law, while short, is deep.My only criticism of the book is that I wish Feser dwelt more on the objections of many naturalist philosophers to the claim that biological inquiry rests on a teleological foundation. I did not come away convinced by Feser's argument from this book, but after reading Feser's other work on teleology, I was convinced of Feser's argument. In the book, however, the section is too short.My last comment is on the quality of writing. When I was an atheist, I thought nobody could write better than Christopher Hitchens (you can tell I am very well read). I was wrong. Edward Feser writes better than Christopher Hitchens. Far better. Not only that, unlike Hitchens, Feser isn't mostly flash; his arguments have bite and depth to them.

There are two questions which any Christian who has struggled with doubt and who cares about having an intellectually rigorous worldview will have asked:1. What is the scope of fundamental Christian convictions?2. How confident can we be in the truth of those convictions?It seems that in our time the answers most commonly given to those questions are 'very small' and 'not very'. To elaborate, many Christians seem to accept that modern science has unique, nearly exclusive authority to describe the world we live in and that scientific reasoning is the gold standard of rationality. It follows that theology is more a matter of hope than knowledge and that the best we can do is show that at least some, often greatly truncated, Christian truth claims are compatible with modern science. Modern Christian theology is an asthmatic, 90 pound weakling with heart trouble in the boxing ring of truth.Enter the doctor: Edward Feser's Aquinas (and by extension Aquinas himself) is a blast of fresh air in those wheezing lungs, a jolt of current through that palpitating heart, and an injection of growth hormone into those wimpy muscles. Starting in Chapter 2 with an exposition of basic Aristotelian and Thomistic metaphysical concepts, including act and potency, form and matter, the four causes, essence and existence, and the nature of the transcendentals (like being, truth and goodness), Feser painstakingly demonstrates how these concepts explain the world we inhabit remarkably well, and remain plausible and defensible despite their development alongside erroneous scientific views. Not only that, but since science in any age rests upon (sometimes unexamined) metaphysical foundations (see the classic The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Science), Aquinas' metaphysics presents itself as a particularly attractive set of foundations for the contemporary study of nature.Up to this point, the book would be of interest not just to readers interested in the history of ideas but also readers interested in formulating a comprehensive philosophy of nature. But the implications of this philosophy of nature for theology are astounding: as Dr. Feser shows in chapter 3, the observed reality of change, the distinction between essence and existence in contingent objects and the reality of final causation all inescapably imply the existence of God as understood by the great philosophical minds of all the major theistic religious traditions: the absolutely unique, simple, unconditioned, omnipotent Reality that grounds the existence and intelligibility of the world of our experience, and is itself perfect goodness, beauty and truth. Contrary to popular perception, Aquinas' Five Ways of demonstrating God's existence are sound and compelling once placed in their proper context of Aristotelian metaphysics, and once their conclusions are thoroughly analyzed they are seen to imply the attributes classically attributed to God. Since the reality of change, final causation and the distinction between essence and existence are readily observable, even to unbelievers, the existence and nature of God (at least to a certain extent) can be inferred on non-religious grounds, making Aquinas' project a particularly compelling example of natural theology.In the remaining two chapters Dr. Feser explicates Thomistic views of human nature and ethics, which again are fairly straightforward applications of the Aristotelian metaphysical principles laid out in chapter 2. The Thomistic understanding of the soul is an alternative to both Cartesian dualism, which posits the existence of two distinct substances to explain mind-body interactions, and materialism, which reduces all mental activity to brain physiology. Thomistic ethics is premised upon human beings have a real nature, which identifies the good for humans as those actions which fulfil the ends intrinsic to that nature.When I reviewed Dr. Feser's The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheism, I remarked that his exposition had almost persuaded me to become a Thomist, but that I still had some reservations. Aquinas has now pushed me all the way into that camp. I am now convinced that Thomism is the most promising metaphysical system for articulating the rationality of the Christian worldview, and that it gets the furniture of the world more nearly right than any other system. I look forward to digging deeper into Aquinas' thought, to fill in the details of my newfound worldview.

My daughter and I read this together. I grew up in Massachusetts, and was steeped in the Pilgrim story early. This book really brought it to life. Although a fictional account of historical people, I had know trouble accepting the characters actually relating to each other, and to the challenges they faced as believable. A very good story with just the right amount of "faith" written in. The Pilgrims were a devote, Christian people. To tell this story without highlighting this fact would be intellectually dishonest.

Wholesome book, based on true account. I bought this for a history unit, but my daughter read the whole book in 2 nights.

Loved reading thisBook to my kids and brought to life the people of the Mayflower. So much better than reading about it in a history book.

I gave this book to my 11 yr old granddaughter as part of her birthday gift. It happens to be the story of her 12th great grandmother. She was thrilled to receive it. I love Amazon Books!

I love that I found this and got it for my mom as a gift because after years and years of tracking our ancestry, she discovered that we are direct descendants of Mary Chilton. I believe she is my great x10 grandmother!

I really liked how this book told me about things I didn't know before; how bad things actually were (and how extreme!) I also liked that it had a dictionary in the back! (I think about dutch words) Overall it was an amazing book for all ages, especially fifth and sixth grade!

It's an excellent, historically accurate story based on a real child that sailed on the Mayflower! It made for a dramatic read-aloud for my nine year old daughter and reinforced what we have been learning about the hardships that the Pilgrims endured during and after their voyage to the New World. It might be harder to understand for younger children since it is narrated in Old English, but my daughter enjoyed it and actually applied the Old English style to her own journaling! The story is wonderfully inspiring and it emphasizes and reveals God's faithfulness in the midst of our human struggles.

I am 13 and I thoroughly enjoyed it.Wendy G Lawton captured Mary's thought's and all VERY well.It was so hards to put down the book.

This book is GORGEOUS! If you're the type to buy cookbooks as eye candy, then this is for you. I also think the ideas are brilliant and even though some of the segmenting seems a little arbitrary (Why are preserved lemons for a happy occasion while salty maple butter is for a sad one?) and some recipes that are supposed to be gifts say they're to be consumed fresh from the oven (they also have instructions of reheating them if you need to, so that's not a real quibble), I unequivocally recommend this book.The recipes seem solid so far, but I'll be making more as we head into the gift season. The "extras" are fun and include flow charts, collections, and beautiful packaging ideas. This definitely isn't one that will sit on the shelf unused.

I gave quite a few handmade, homemade Christmas gifts this year, and this book really helped me create some unique and special items. The graham cracker toffee and peanut butter balls were huge hits, and so easy to make. This is a book I know I'll use over and over again. A variety of recipes and personal observations make this book not only practical, but enjoyable to read, as well.

This is one of the best books I have in my cook book collection. The recipes are delicious and the instructions are easy to follow - I enjoy curling up with this book and reading through the recipes, stories and deciding what to create next! I think this book is way under-rated and I believe this book would be a great gift in itself! I can't wait for her to write a volume 2! I assure you, you will enjoy reading this book as much as you will preparing recipes from its' pages! I have the Kindle version so I can always take it with me wherever I go.....it's quite a little treasure!

This book enables anyone to make and gift all sorts of tasty treats. Recipes are approachable, understandable and include ingredients you've heard of all put together with a twist. Packaging ideas abound and the photos show how easy it is to be a maker. Give it a go or give it to a friend/loved one etc and benefit from the yumminess inside.I have tackled candied ginger, ginger syrup, spice rubs and jams so far with great results. I know what I'll be doing this winter when i am snowed in.

I was severely disappointed in this book because it is just a regurgitation of protocols espoused in the early '80's. Restrict calories, eat 6 small meals a day, drink a gallon of water a day, lift focusing only on negative reps. While this protocol will cause you to loose fat, it is known to be unsustainable by the public at large due to its method of caloric restriction. 1,400 calories per day for a healthy, active male becomes psychologically difficult to maintain over the long term. The 6 small meal a day protocol has been debunked as unhealthy, leading to prolonged elevated blood sugar levels and decreased insulin sensitivity; the opposite of what you want for maintaining fat loss. "Superhydration" from drinking a gallon of cold water a day... no medical basis for this. I would also caution any practitioners to not overdo the negative focused weight lifting. While negatives are better for adding muscle mass, negative only lifting can create proprioception issues. His 30/10/30 protocol does avoid this by including the 10 "normal" reps, but because it is still so negative focused I would be wary. This is one book I can say I received zero value from.

I've followed Darden since the early 80s and his materials are a welcome breath of real results and real science in a falsified marketing society. What I find so interesting is as a trainer I am able to duplicate his results real world with my own clientele. This is another win win book. With that said, much of the material is simple and very much like his other reads with slight differences. It is beyond most trainers ability to fathom. I tell all my clients until you have tried it 100% as written yourself, reserve comment. Do it, log your results (properly) and then comment. I have used this specific protocol he teaches here with results. Dr Darden is the real deal! Great read, 2 thumbs up.

Darden is a PhD who knows how to conduct studies and report the results. Since the death of his mentor, Arthur Jones, in 2007, Darden has progressively tested and developed his own ideas about negative-accentuated exercise. He uses small, self-selected groups and includes far too much anecdotal material. This isn't hard science, but it is valuable information. Anyone who follows the admittedly demanding instructions should expect good results. The emphasis is on weight loss, but guidance is included for those already lean who want to add muscle. The book needs refinement and much more rigorous editing, but the bottom line is Darden's negative-accentuated exercise protocols work

I saw the article in T-Nation and thought I would give it try. I had been stalled out with Keto and Paleo variants and was surprised on the higher carb requirement this diet recommended. I made some modifications to the recommendations-slightly higher calories and cold showers instead of cold baths. I also have a hard time sleeping so getting the recommended sleep was not possible. I did lose 15 pounds in 19 days and felt great. I then had hernia surgery and have come back using a modified weight lifting routine (BFR) due to my weight lifting restrictions. I have continued to lose at a slightly slower rate (0.5 lbs/day), but I am getting close to my goal and am currently at approximately 20% body fat so I would expect a slowdown. I am extremely happy to have discovered this technique for weight loss and will always be able to implement if I start to gain weight again.

If you read and follow the information in this book you will get rid of fat, build muscle and feel a whole lot better. I'm 62 and have so far have lost about 25 lbs. of fat and put on a few pounds of muscle. I think the 30-10-30 strength training protocol is very effective and efficient. Including the warm up and cool down I'm at the gym no more than 40 minutes. The 30-10-30 allows about 90 seconds of time under tension per set and 2/3 of that time is in the eccentric portion of the movement. Couldn't be happier with the results so far and this is something that can be sustained over the long term.

this book is a great read and the instructions are easy to follow, the negative workouts are brutal and it works for weight loss as I lost 5 lbs in 10 days...….the only issues I have with the methods is the consumption of processed foods, I would prefer using whole foods as a guide towards health, the other issue I have is I am not so sure the 30-10-30 is for bodybuilding....I lost 5 lbs but I am not sure it was fat loss or muscle losshowever, the book is very easy to follow, I would recommend to anyone that wants to lose weight

My daughter wanted a cookbook that she could make recipies on her own. These are way too complicated. Too many ingredients. Too many steps. Even simple pankcakes has them using a blender, and the oven, as well as the griddle. These are cute dishes to make for kids, but not for kids to make on their own.

Receipies way too complicated n too many spices. A disappointment for me n grandson

My daughter loves this book! The recipes are very healthy. Pancakes are made with bananas instead of flour and sugar :) but the ideas and designs are perfect. We just tweak them a bit to suit our taste buds.I love that it is food, dessert and drinks :)

This says it’s a kids cookbook, and maybe there are kids in this world who would eat the foods in this book. I’ve just never met them. No way are any of the kids I know going to eat half the foods in this book. I, on the other hand, plan to make most of these recipes for myself! I would enjoy almost all of them.

My kids are enjoying this cookbook, wish there were more photos to go with the recipes.

Gave as a gift and my nephew who is autistic loves it and easy for him to use and he is cooking!

JOANNE FLUKE'S LAKE EDEN COOKBOOK by Joanne FlukeLove Joanne Fluke books and just thought this would be a recipe book but I was wrong. There is a story in thereabout the cookie swap they have. It's easy to keep track of everybody over the years and I love these series.Book also includes a hard copy of a recipe along with all the recipes from the Cookie Jar which Hannah runs in Lake Eden.Love how the recipes give you not only tips on how to make them but other most useful tips on brands, measurements and how to serve-hot or cold and anything else she feels might be needed. I can't wait to try some of the ones in this book.Love hand drawn pictures of different vegetables, dishes, etc. I wish this book was spiral bound so the print would be bigger and it'd fit on my recipe holder better.Can't wait to make the Angel Kiss Cookies. Love the tip about the size of baking pans!Loved hearing all the stories they shared while feasting at the cookie swap. The stories brought a smile to my face!Love end result of the charity.I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest review

Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook is short on story but long on recipes. It has all the recipes from the first eight or nine Hannah Swenson books with a little bit of a story thrown in to make it interesting. I am working my way through most of her cookie recipes so it is nice to have them in one place. Even if you are not a murder/mystery buff like myself this little cookbook is delightful. And it is not just cookie recipes. There are several casserole dishes included but in Minnesota they are called Hot Dishes.

I purchased this book as a gift. Of course, I read it before gifting it. I was really surprised by this book. It was a fun read. There is actually a story interspersed throughout the recipes. I enjoyed it so much that I might actually purchase another copy for myself.

Wonderful cookbook that contains all of Hannah Swenson's famous Cookie Jar dessert recipes. Would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is a fan of the Hannah Swenson series, and who is gifted in the art of baking, or just loves her recipes (to make or just admire!).The only problem I have with this product is that I wish it was laid out in cookbook form; as in, if it was larger and perhaps would lay better. I have the Mass Market Paperback version which is very difficult to read and refer to when in the kitchen.

Contains all recipes from (I believe) the first 17 Hannah Swensen books. Also included are recipes that aren't in her books. I was able to highlight and make comments on the recipes (I have the Kindle version). Once I try a recipe, I highlight the recipe's name. Then if I want to remember a hint or remember a change I made, I just leave a comment by the recipe name.

I love this series and was so excited to see the recipes in a cookbook. It's only a few of the books recipes but they are all in there. Amazing and fun recipes. Every time I make anything from this everyone asks for my recipe. I hope they keep making more recipe books! Maybe for Christmas this year??

I enjoy J. Fluke's stories and recipes. The cook book content met my expectations based on the novels I read and bought. However this cookbook had been on back order and I don't know if they rushed a reprint or what but this is the worst book I have ever seen or held in my hands. The pages are stiff and tend to clump and the edge cuts are anything but uniform. They turn okay and I can use it as is, but I will not be giving this book as a gift

If you enjoy the Hannah Swensen series by Joanne Fluke or even the Murder, She Baked movies, and you enjoy baking and eating yummy cookies, then this cookbook is for you. I have only read one of her books, as I just discovered the series, and I am enjoying it. This cookbook is a great tie in with stories and tons of recipes, mostly cookies. I have made three recipes so far and they have each turned out delicious! There are no pictures in this book, only a few drawings, and I usually want photos in my cookbooks, but for this book it does not matter.

(even though I am about on par with Andrea in terms of cooking abilities--who knew that you had to take the innards out before cooking a chicken, or that there was even such a thing as a $100 cooking pan/dish/thingy you could so terribly scorch in the course of making Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that it would be ruined...)Seriously though, somehow I expected this to be the Lake Eden cookbook that was getting put together by Hannah for publication during the last few books. I expected, well a cookbook, including recipes that made enough sense that I might be able to do them (or convince my more kitchen-savvy husband to try). Reading the Hannah books always make my mouth water and I was looking forward to having the recipes in one place to wave under my husband's nose.Instead this is a series of recipes from the books (like I wanted) organized by type but located in between little snippets featuring the local residents (and yes, Andrea had yet another funny cooking attempt story). A bit of a Lake Eden bonus it turns out.Oh, and I read the Kindle version...and I was happy to see the footnotes were hyperlinked. In the regular books there would be asterisks and it was not intuitive for me to find the comments as all the asterisks were lumped together at the end (or was it the beginning) of the book in one section. Ultimately you could figure out the nut comment went with the recipe containing nuts, but it was not a simplified process. This book has numbered footnotes and they jump you right to the appropriate comment and, with a touch of the back button, you are where you left off. Much improved formatting!All I can say right now is mmmm....cooooookies...Highly Recommended!JTG
