I just got into this manga (and INCOMING ANIME) this week... and I'm already hooked for life. It is just so fun to read and laugh at the situations "Darling" is put through with these sexy and funny extraspecies ladies... YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS!It is light hearted, so don't really expect any insane complex world threatening plot or anything of that sort. However, it can lay claim to having a really interesting lore and setting, with possible implied messages regarding acceptance of people with special needs and different characteristics, rather putting good emphasis on the need to respect and love these people just like any family member. Also, I KNEW THE CREATOR was from PIXIV, this screams like something already cool that got so popular (rightfully so) that it evolved into manga form, and in July 2015 will debut as an anime...Let's hope the anime isn't dumbed down or changed completely from the manga.Final Verdict: BUY THIS, and the previous volumes. Already got the next volume pre-ordered, I wish it was already available.

I just love this book series monster Museum I'm almost through volume 6. Waiting for volume 7 to be release. During the course of the series, we meet, among other things, a harpy, a centaur, a mermaid, and many more monster girls who fall for Kimihito and wish to win him anyway possible. I would encourage this for all adult fans who enjoy comedy manga, harem manga and slice of life stories

Just when Kimihito thought he survivied his latest adventure, a wicked scythe is held to his throat - at least until he turns around and sees a headless body searching for its missing head. He takes her home and recruits the other girls to assist in locating the missing part, there he meets Lala the Dullahan - a messenger of Death with a message that Kimihito is in mortal peril and his soul is to be reaped. Can the girls save their beloved human from this new character? Then Kimihito realizes that the food budget has been stressed and with Miia's cooking has no food left, how can he feed his growing harem of monster cuties? Can the girls help with this, and did Smith-san forget another important part of being a host family? Then the mail comes with a letter for Rachnea from her first family who wants to bring her back, is the most debauched member of their family about to leave their home or will Kimihito put his foot down? And what horrors wait for him when his first three ladies announce that they are getting visitors from home?I LOVE THIS SERIES......It has been non-stop entertainment, even when it gets serious. Major warning - Suu is on a rampage in this one, so the Ecchii level has been upped again. I can not wait until August for the next volume to see what happens next and if our poor hapless human can survive the next challenge. And now that the anime has been announced, the fun has been expanded.

This is a cute, fun story, and definitely not for kids. It's heavy on the fanservice, which is part of the story. If it was just tossed in it'd be very annoying, but since it's part of the story and the whole theme of the manga, I don't find it disruptive or of place. I will say the puns the translators use are unnecessary, unamusing, and annoying, as were the changes of the nicknames the characters use for each other. In those two areas, the online fan translations were much, much better. Still, I like the manga so I decided to buy it in order to support the author.

I thought that this was going to be a wrap up to the current story line but something got missed? Near the end of 1 chapter he actually professed his feelings for one of the girls, but by the beginning of the next chapter, that major piece of the plot was completely ignored or overlooked. I heard recently that they have licensed this for an anime run.

A beautifully constructed book, with an easy, readable history of cataloging and card catalogs, with interspersed images of library cards from the Library of Congress and a images of the corresponding book. It is quite informative and interesting, if you like the history of books.I am just barely old enough to remember, in the late 1980s and early 1990s: being taught about the card catalogs by the ancient-looking, spinsterish librarians; the ponderous-looking drawers of wood with metal facings; thumbing through the subject cards, author cards, and title cards; the text on the differently colored cards in any number of typewriting and handwriting styles; jotting down call numbers on slips of paper with short pencils; finding the book.If you're nostalgic for the old cards, you'll find this a perfectly fun book. An excellent look at a lost form of information cataloging, indexing, and presentation.4.5 of 5 stars.

I am a retired history teacher and lifelong bibliophile. As a young boy one of my favorite haunts was the library. My first after school job in high school was working as a page in a public library. Suffice it to say, I found this book to be an absolute delight! It is a well written history of how libraries through the ages have tackled the formidable task of cataloging the books in their collections. The illustrations are beautiful and could easily stand alone without any text to make this book a treasure for any book lover.

I discovered in college just what a treat using the library card catalog could be: Subjects in the card catalog lead to other previously unconsidered subjects, which increased the depth and width of knowledge about and around the initial subject. This book rekindles that thrill.

Terrific historical account of the beloved card catalog, and includes wonderful photos of original cards and furniture and libraries. I'm a librarian who gave this as a gift to a retiring caloging librarian friend. She loves it! And she said her husband was fascinated, too.

What a fun book! I got this book for my bookworm husband and he loves it. Card catalogs have so much history- the librarians, the patrons who checked them out, and the time an older book was popular. It has a little more than just a coffee table book, but it does look beautiful on the shelf too. I recommend this to all bookworm or someone who loves the printed word, they'll appreciate the history, not just the novelty.

The authorship of the book is credited to The Library of Congress in general, though it does include a brief introduction by the current Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. I purchased the ebook edition of this title when it came up as a Kindle deal, so that’s what I’m reviewing here. The book is probably more successful as a print volume, however, because even on a large screen the Kindle app doesn’t display the photos very large and doesn’t allow zooming.I am a recent library school graduate with a particular interest in cataloging and classification, so I’m about as close to the intended audience for this book as you can get, though it does make an attempt to appeal to a broader readership of general book lovers. This book succinctly explains, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the continuous struggle to make an ever-expanding inventory of library materials findable and accessible. It is essentially a historical overview of the development of pre-digital metadata used to catalog library collections, beginning with ancient and medieval libraries and then progressing to the modern American library. Along the way, the reader also gains a lot of insight into the broader history of the Library of Congress—its origins, its transformation from a legislators’ reference library to a national public treasure, and its initiation as the bestower of copyright in America. After developing its own card catalog, the Library of Congress instituted its Cataloging Distribution Service, which sent copies of its cards to libraries all across the country, thereby influencing the development of library operations nationwide.The entire book can be read in about two hours, so it is by no means a comprehensive, authoritative overview on its subject, yet it provides much more information than one would expect from a coffee-table illustrated volume. The book doesn’t go into detail about the Library of Congress’s digital methods of cataloging because the book is primarily a nostalgic love letter to the physical, many-drawered oak cabinets full of 3 x 5 inch index cards.This fondness for the tactile card catalog many of us grew up with is evident in the illustrations as well. The book features many historical photos of The Library of Congress—its building, its directors, and its operations. The majority of the illustrations, however, consist of cover images and title pages of classic books coupled with their corresponding cards plucked from the Library’s actual cabinets. Some are handwritten, some typed; some contain annotations and corrections. As a book lover, I could look at pictures of old books all day, and this book contains a lot of beautiful images, but the pictures of the cards really didn’t interest or surprise me much. The overall card catalog system is a monumental achievement, but I didn’t feel the fondness for each individual card that the compilers of this book hoped I would.Any librarian will definitely enjoy this book. For the general book lover, it’s hard to say, as the text is more about book cataloging than the books themselves. Though the ebook version is a great bargain, the printed volume no doubt provides a far superior reading and viewing experience.

This beautifully produced book will delight lovers of books and libraries. The history of book description and classification at the Library of Congress is interspersed with illustrations and books and cards from the massive LC catalog. As a librarian and user of card catalogs for many years, I found the history fascinating and the illustrations delightful. Every library and library lover should have this book!

I had really high hopes for this book, and I'm sorry to say there isn't much about it I thought was done well. The idea was great, a white family adopts a the black child of their now-deceased nanny, and had a lot of potential to say something really meaningful about race. However, all we really learn is that motherhood is a lot of work. I found the characters boring, their relationships shallow, the writing too bogged down in details, the dialogue inane and overly detailed (simple chit-chat conversations go on for pages and substantive conversations don't resolve anything), and the dealbreaker that any conflict is resolved literally by the start of the next chapter. Nothing builds. Any good plot development fizzles or is dropped entirely within a few pages, never to be brought up again.

I purchased multiple copies of this book after hearing it be reviewed by critics on The Today Show. I bought copies for all the moms in my family and invited them all to a Mother’s Day book club gathering. Guess I should have read it for myself first. No one in my family got the point of this book. There was no climax. No resolution. Just a lot of arbitrary. As I was reading, I kept anticipating where the author was going, and when it was over, my anticipations were the most exciting parts. Just didn’t live up to the hype. I wouldn’t waste my time reading this one.

I wavered between rating this fine book a 4 or 5. The beginning began slowly. I know the author was trying to develop characters, so I was patient and then it took off. This story is about a reality of today. The black child adopted into today’s family. It is a well thought out story and certainly gives one food for thought. I really got into the story and felt I understood all the characters. I don’t think the ratings it has gotten are totally fair. People should examine any prejudices they might have and keep an open mind. I liked the ending. It will be interesting to see how his future writings develop.

I had such high hopes! Sadly, the writer got in the way of his own story telling. The unending prose became a quagmire that held character and plot line beneath the surface. I was hopeful each time the story ventured away from self-absorbed Rebecca and toward the substantial reality of race relations, but each time I was frustratingly disappointed. The writer was much more interested in Rebecca than I could bring myself to be. Hard pass.

I tried. I really did. I wanted to like it, but it fell completely flat. As noted in other reviews, there were glimpses of what could be a really powerful story, but they are never developed to their potential. I even came back to re-read the ending to see if I had missed something. I hadn't. There are other books that deal with issues of race, adoption, and family. Skip this one.

I read this book on a couple of recommendations of normally reliable sources. This book causes me to question my own judgement. I could never really feel anything for the characters. I wanted a more emotionally engaging story and I wanted to care about Rebecca and company, however, I could not find a lot to like.

This book is a waste of time and money. It is incredibly boring and if there was a plot I sure couldn’t find it. It was so bad it gave me headaches! The best part about this book is that I am done and can start something way better.

I never really figured what point the author was trying to make. Every time it seemed there was going to be a message the book wandered off in another direction. I do not recommend investing time in this book.

Is good. Pretty much what I expected. First entry is "Aatxe" of Basque mythology. Last is Zuzeca of North American Lakota. It is a listing of ghosts and a their legends/lore from folklore around the world. If u r really into ghosts legends/lore u will like this. Contains more common entries such as: Grim(church grim), Galley Beggar, Banshee, Will-O'-the Wisp, Djinn, Familiar spirit, Unicorn, Jack o lantern, kachina, just to name a few. And lots of stuff u have never heard of. Is an interesting good reference book. If u have a collection of ghost books this will fit right in. Is good as a casual read, or for reference.

A few months ago, I received a book from McFarland & Company, Inc. for review, courtesy of the book’s author and my good friend, Theresa Bane. Theresa and I have been corresponding for a few years now, and she is an absolute delight to speak to and interact with. In addition, Theresa is a renowned vampirologist and an expert on the Undead. She has written two books about vampires and a number of others about demons, giants, faeries, monsters, haunted places, folklore, and ghosts. It is the last one that the book in question covers, and it is entitled Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits in World Mythology (McFarland & Company, 2016).Like most of Theresa’s books, the encyclopedia is an academic work, and every type of ghost and spirit gets an entry of its own in an A-Z format. Theresa’s research is painstakingly thorough, and the bibliography is one of the longest and the most extensive that I’ve ever seen. Some of the book’s entries are long and very detailed, while others consist of only a single sentence and only give a brief description. However, most of the entries fall somewhere in between the two. And after each entry, Theresa gives her sources. And for a book of only 169 pages, that’s a lot of information!As for the book’s entries, they contain information on every conceivable type of ghost and spirit, including appearance, habits, powers, what part of the world they’re found in, how to protect oneself and, in some instances, how to destroy them. This book contains a number of different spirit types, including spirits of the dead (ghosts), nature spirits, faeries, yōkai, demonic spirits, household spirits, elementals, ancestral spirits, vampiric spirits, genii loci (spirits attached to a place), guardian spirits, monsters, different types of djinn, and a great deal more. The entries feature all kinds of entities, from the Banshee (and all variations thereof) to the Ghoul, from the Acheri to the Grey Lady, and a host of others in alphabetical order, from the Aatxe to the Zuzeca. And since this book deals with ghosts and spirits that are found in cultures all over the world, you won’t find any information pertaining to haunted places of any kind. There are literally thousands of books on that subject available for your perusal.Overall, Theresa’s book is well-written, neatly organized, free of flaws, and a veritable treasure trove of information. Her research is incredibly thorough and detailed, with an index for quickly locating specific entries and an extensive bibliography for further reading and research. Whether you’re a serious researcher or just curious, this book is an incredible read. I am truly thankful that McFarland & Company and Theresa have given me the opportunity to review this title, and I hope to review more of their titles in the near future. I heartily recommend this title to all of my friends.

The author is very detached and shows little respect for the subjects she is treating in her books (and it shows badly - see my review of her vampire encyclopedia). Then, why writing about these matters??

I'm a grad student in landscape architecture and I have a masters in planning and community design, as well. I also have a well-rounded education in restoring and rehabing many different habitats. In short, I've read A LOT of literature on ecological design as it relates to ecological restoration.This has been a very expensive endeavor and I still didn't learn as much from all those courses as I did from reading this book. I read it cover to cover without skipping around and found it to be written at a really relateable level for people new to ecological design and those of us exposed to extensive theory. It builds concepts nicely and discusses them in the context of case studies, but it feel more like story telling - if stories were based in science. Beck lays concepts out at a nice speed and links them together with discussions of the seminal writings in ecology that everyone working in this field should know and reference in their own work. Beck discusses more very important - must know - theory and application in less than 300 pages than I learned in 7 or 8 various ecology courses over several years. If you are just getting into ecological design this is an excellent read and reference book. If you just finished an interdisciplinary scramble of high level ecology and need a key to fit all those puzzle pieces together - this is your book. I'm very happy with it.

One of my favorite books exploring practical, sustainable, ecological design methods and philosophy for the future. Not for the novice, but certainly bridges the expert and intermediate.

 TRAVIS BECK DID A GREAT JOB. This is a well documented progression of ecological design and its structure in our landscapes. Key points reinforce the importance of understanding the niche, climate, and ecological conditions to design a naturally sustained landscape.

This book gives a good background in ecology and then points out ways of using the kind of thinking that ecology excels at, and directs the landscape designer in using that mode of analysis.

I am reading this cover to cover and while a lot of it is familiar from diffeent courses it is helpfulto have it all under one cover. There are also a number of ideas that I had not considered before.

I highly recommend this book. It is extremely comprehensive and will certainly be beneficial for anyone who reads it. It should be required reading for many university classes.

Would get 5 stars if it had color pictures. I have print and kindle edition, both are in black and white. It's near impossible to pick out plant species from a landscape b&w scenic photo. Captions imply the book was once printed in color.
