Having been through consciousness-raising in the late 60's around discrimination against women, I know how it feels to have the blindfold ripped off and to see things clearly that were completely invisible before. That is what this awesome book did for me around age discrimination. It's highly readable and meticulously researched while at the same time being trenchant and funny. In the days since I finished reading it, I've been observing my own attitudes and the things that happen around me in a whole new way. I see ageism EVERYWHERE, and not least between my own ears. Many of my own actions are motivated by the desire not to appear "old", and I need to work on that.If you hope to get old someday, read this book. If enough people do, and then take action, there might just be a chance that the world will be "older-friendly" by the time you get there.

I found this author through a New York Times editorial and was led to her website and blog, which I so thoroughly enjoyed. Is Ageism the "Last Acceptible Prejudice?" I've heard that said about casual anti-Semitism ("Jew him down"), casual homophobia ("that's so Gay!"), but jokes about "I've fallen and I can't get up are endemic without a second look. In my practice, I see long-term employees with good evaluations over a long period of time, suddenly deemed incompetent. I even, in one case, collected the data from the entire Board of Education of New York City and learned that statistically, teachers over 40 were more likely to be charged with incompetence than those under - and with each ten-year increase in age, the chances went up. The Court rejected the evidence because an arbitrator had accepted the testimony of the principal - a rule rejected by another part of the country. I took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, and my brief got some notice, but was not accepted for argument. Later, the Supreme Court made it harder for aggrieved employees to sue. Local laws, like those in New York City lessen the burden, but "out with the old in with the new" is presumptively accepted in the workplace, and the employer will find a way to get rid of an employee for some reason or another. People in my position must hunt for clues - like statistical evidence - and statements and negative treatment that will allow a jury to infer ageism. This author's book gave me so many insights (and now citations) to inferences to be made from statements and actions and I'm so glad I was surfing the web and found this wonderful and important book about fundamental human rights.

Many of you reading the word ageism will probably have a reaction similar to mine. Among the many negative -isms, racism, sexism, jingoism, authoritarianism--ageism was a barely perceptible blip on my radar. Ashton Applewhite's recently published book, This Chair Rocks--A Manifesto against Ageism--beautifully describes why we should care and, almost as importantly, why we should combat ageism. It is both a well researched treatise on ageism and its consequences and engaging personal story of a journey to understand why and how ageism is so prevalent in our society. Ageism is a wonderful example of the adage "We have met the enemy and he is us." What we all should remember is that the ageist of today is the elder of tomorrow. It is a challenging and important book and I hope you will all buy it and read it.

Ashton Applewhite presents a compelling way to view aging-along with descriptions (sometimes surprising, at least to me) of what ageism is. The book gives comfort to those of us dealing actively with leaving middle age (whatever that is, exactly) behind and entering new ground. Applewhite deals realistically with the challenges of aging while pointing out the many ways in which we can continue to evolve and contribute-to ourselves and the world. One point that particularly struck home was the fact that we are all, always, aging and that in rejecting older people, younger people are in fact rejecting their future selves. Our society has created an unrealistic box in which we place "the old" and everyone looks for ways to avoid being in this artificial box (while, of course, continuing to stay alive). Applewhite dispels many of the frightening myths about aging (for example, the idea of most people ending up as a burden only applies to a small percentage) and explores its many gifts. My only complaint about this book came from the Kindle edition I bought. In several places it was missing pages that made it hard to follow the book's progress. This is a sad fault that mars the reading experience of an excellent work.

A thousand lightbulb moments is the best way to describe this book. As you turn the pages you will think "yes, I noticed that and it made me wonder." As boomers get older there has been a glut of books on aging and most have focused on adapting to cultural stereotypes - slowing down, retiring, medical challenges - this is a shining gem in that stack because it is about debunking the myths related to aging, she backs up this premise with studies and facts, and she encourages people of all ages to raise our awareness of ageist behavior and call it out and question it.. Applewhite encourages you to not be defined by stereotypes - to live your life as you see fit. That might mean slowing down but it also might mean speeding up. As she notes we become more individualistic as we get older because we get to know ourselves better so why should we be influenced by a one size fits all definition of aging. The word "manifesto" is included here because it encourages activism and she gives you a toolbox full of ways to go within and to share with others. As for me she may have created a monster because as I got older I noticed more and more that the "standard definition" and stock photos of greying elders looking into the sunset had nothing to do with my life and I started to overtly question overt ageist content across media and culture in general and our profit generating obsession with "youth." I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Whether you are 12 or 102 this should be on your mandatory reading list.

I thought I would buy this book after Whitey was killed in prison to understand the biggest name in Boston crime and politics in the past last couple of decades. Not only did it reinforce what a ruthless and heartless family the Bulgers were but I learned many things I did not realize that had happened even though I grew up in Massachusetts. Howie does a great job detailing the paths of both brothers with a lot of detail. A good read and you will be astonished at what you learn. Highly recommended!!!!

I read this book after enjoying the movie, "The Departed." Howie Carr has certainly mastered the art of delivering a fast paced story, one that wraps inuendo around facts, dates, and personalities. He knows his subject matter, the Bulger Brothers, like a butcher knows a steer, and, he carves it up to a fare-the-well.The narrative opens with Billy, the politician brother, testifying before a congressional committee where he doesn't come off well taking the 5th. His brother Whitey, meanwhile, tops the FBI list of America's most wanted criminals spawning a cottage industry of global Whitey spottings over the last decade. Howie Carr clearly doesn't think much of Billy's lifetime of political fixings and seeks to tie him to his psycho criminal brother in the Bostonian version of a politico-fandango, true or otherwise. It's in a way too bad as Billy has risen from the shanty Irish mean streets of "southie" to be president of the state senate followed by a stint as president of UMass. Alas, his life of political corruption, shades of J.M. Curley's era, catches up to him, but not before he receives a handsome pension to ease his retiring years.Whitey, on the other hand, comes across for what he apparently is which is a pretty scary guy. He murders well over 50 people after getting out of Alcatraz in his early 20's. Carr leads the reader thru the various killings and maimings with the added feature of FBI corruption thrown in. Whitey was an FBI informant which made for a bad ending if you were his competitor in crime, and this is where Carr ties Billy to Whitey with the corrupted FBI agent fitting neatly into the mix, all a part of an all-star criminal class out of the southie end of Boston. And what a story it is as it reads like an endlessly repeating drive-by killing spree all juxtaposed with Billy's political operations shades of the Kennedy machine - ipso the Irish mob of Nicholson in the Departed marries the life of Danial Drew, he of Days of Erie fame. Nothing has changed, just the names.I'd recommend a book entitled, "the Bosses" to frame out the Billy side and perhaps Vinnie Teresa's, "My life in the mob" for the Whitey side. In any event it's a page turner which I looked forward to reading again after each time I had to put it down. All the Mass-politico names are there including Barney, Ted and J.F. Kerry. What a bunch!

Product was in fine consideration great price but it was a horribly written shame on Howie Carr

If it wasn't for Howie Carr these two would have kept their undeserved reputations.......to a point. HOWIE IS the only one in the public eye that wasn't afraid to tell the real story. He also deserves respect as a lone voice in Boston against all the other corruption that continues to this day. This is the definitive book about the Brothers and their path of destruction whether it was mafia style murder or legalized laundering (Billy Bulger). I'm going Togo out on a limb and guess that Whiteys trial will be a fiasco similar to O.J. Simpson or something similar. As always Howie will be on the case and on the radio...great book Howie!

An extremely interesting book about two terrible individuals, Whitey Bulger was a ruthless killer who thankfully will now DIE in prison, but his brother who has escaped justice is also a reprehensible figure who played the system to his full advantage, and is a great example of institutional corruption. Sadly he has escaped Justice, but at least they got Whitey. Hopefully Howie Carr is writing the latest version which will include the just completed Trial of Whitey Bulger.

Howie Carr has captured the essence the evil of Whitey Bulger and the complicity of his brother, Billy. As someone who lived in Southie during that period he gives vivid testimony that South Boston is not a place, its a state of mind!!Brilliant descriptive narrative. He joins Elmore Leonard and Tom Wolfe in the pantheon of American novelists that understand the difference between the real and the apparent in the human spirit. His "Hard Knocks" is a must read sequel.

Being from New Hampshire I couldn't care less about mass corruption. The whole state is a nightmare and always will be. I bought this book to get a clue about what Howie is always talking about with these Bulger people. And now that I've read it, I suggest that every Howie Carr devotee read it, just so you know what the heck he is so obsessed with (no offense Howie but nobody really cares about this stuff since 911). You will be amazed though at how many FBI and cops were/are on the take. This stuff is only supposed to happen in the movies. Old movies! I wish you success with the book Howie. I can listen to you online down here in Miami but it's not the same.

Easy fast exciting read.Howie carr is the best.

Review

"The Sweet Flypaper of Life" is an incredible wonder that is so compact you can almost cradle it in your palm. A sense of humanity permeates the black-and-white photographs. (Nicole Herrington New York Times)“The Sweet Flypaper of Life” is an incredible wonder that is so compact you can almost cradle it in your palm. A sense of humanity permeates the black-and-white photographs...And DeCarava’s narrow range of deep tones breathes beautiful life into the black faces of the young and old. (Nicole Herrington New York Times)It is a book, then, that continues to fascinate, even more so, perhaps, in the current political climate. Its timely reissue will hopefully alert a new generation to a still undervalued master of intimate observation and his singular collaboration with a writer who instinctively understood his radical vision. (Sean O"Hagan The Guardian)Astonishing verisimilitude. (New York Times)The sensitivity of the photographs and the excellent blending of the pictures with the text... Bravo! (Henri Cartier Bresson)A mixture of the warm and stark, the tender and the slightly terrifying- in short, very like life itself. (The Village Voice)The subtle, the almost exquisite interplay of text and photographs. (Image Journal)A harmony more than poetry or photography alone, but its own kind of art... a delicate and lovely fiction-document of life in Harlem. (Lewis Gannett)

Roy DeCaravaOver the course of six decades, American artist Roy DeCarava (1919–2009) produced a singular collection of black-and-white photographs of modern life that combine formal acuity with an intimate and deeply human treatment of his subject matter. Grounded by a unified theory of the visual plane, his work displays a subtle mastery of tonal and spatial elements and devotion to the medium of photography as a means of artistic expression. DeCarava created images that carry an emotional impact in their immediate relationship to the viewer, while also revealing less-than-visible terrains. DeCarava’s pioneering work privileged the aesthetic qualities of the medium, carrying the ability to reach the viewer as a counterpoint to the view of photography as mere chronicle or document and helping it to gain acceptance as an art form in its own right.Langston HughesLangston Hughes (1902–1967) was a poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist. Known worldwide as a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes’s work has been significant in introducing black history and culture into the corpus of American cultural history as well as inspiring with his humanistic concerns, writers in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and South America. While living in Harlem, Hughes maintained close relationships with other writers working in and around the city―Aaron Douglas, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, and Wallace Thurman were all considered friends and they would frequently gather to discuss politics, writing, and literature. Together, this close group of writers was instrumental in giving voice to the communities that would not accept persecution and marginalization. Hughes’s dispatches for the New York newspapers raised quotidian reportage to an art, filing moving descriptions of the famed Harlem Brigade who were martyred during the Spanish Civil War. Later in his life Hughes turned toward collaboration, working with the German composer Kurt Weill on the 1947 opera Street Scene, with jazz musicians including Charles Mingus and with the photographer Roy DeCarava on The Sweet Flypaper of Life.Sherry Turner DeCaravaSherry Turner DeCarava is an art historian, curator, and independent scholar in the fields of traditional arts and contemporary American photography. She has taught or lectured extensively at universities and museums, including Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), Brooklyn Museum, and Rockefeller University. Serving as the executive director, the principal focus of her professional career has been the development of The DeCarava Archives, which supports exhibition and scholarly research projects related to the work of her late husband Roy DeCarava. She is the author of two definitive texts on his photography, including that in Roy DeCarava: A Retrospective published by The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1996) and in Roy DeCarava: Photographs, a monograph published by the Friends of Photography/Ansel Adams Trust (1981). Awarded the Prix de la Photographie by Les Rencontres de la Photographie, the Arles Center for Culture, in its annual survey of international photography, her 1981 text was lauded as the best photo/text collaboration of the year. In 2014 she initiated First Print Press, beginning a process to republish classic Roy DeCarava books, while bringing new photographic projects into print.

"The Sweet Flypaper of Life" is a classic volume. Langston Hughes storyline combined with the photography of Roy DeCarava's photography was groundbreaking in the 1950's and it is still relevant and worthy of praise today. My mediocre review is not based on the quality of Mr. Hughes writing or Mr. DeCarava's photographs, both of them being above reproach. What pretty much ruins this book for me is the small format of the book and the reproduction of the photographs.I have no idea what the original book looked like. This printing might be an attempt to recreate the original in size and print quality, however, the current book is crippled by the tiny size and dark, detail destroying reproduction of the photographs. Roy DeCarava's photographs document joy. The photos are alive with this joy but the dark, muddy printing conveys the exact opposite emotion. While Mr. Hughes' text continues to soar, Mr. DeCarava and his photographs deserve better. At some point in time, I hope a larger format edition of this book can be printed. With better reproduction. The pictures need to be presented larger with better detail that conveys the joyous subject matter. The book is still worth buying, especially at the low cover price, but I would have been willing to pay considerably more just to have a better presentation.

First published in 1955, The Sweet Flypaper of Life, is a deft depiction of life in Harlem as seen through the eyes of Sister Mary Bradley.Sympatheyically juxtaposed with stunning black & white photographs captured by master photographer Roy DeCarava, and astute text written by renowned poet Langston Hughes, it adroitly conveys the struggles, triumphs, and relationships of every day black people. The marriage of these two genres birthed a photo-story that has reached lengedary status amongst both photographers and poets alike. Being a first of its time collaboration, DeCarava and Hughes, elite masters of their craft, unapologetically affirmed a gentler side of Harlem life of which was scarcely or never before documented.Last re-printed in 1984, I wholeheartedly recommend you purchase a copy of this hard to find out of print masterpiece of if ever the chance arises. It is only then that you will truly appreciate what it means to be bathed fully by "The Sweet Flypaper of Life".Jamusu.

This is beautiful book. Langston Hudghes words, written after he viewed the fabulous photos by Roy DeCarava, are perfect. It's just a shame the books wasn't printed in a larger format. It's still absolutely worth purchasing.

Roy DeCarava is the master! This is a basic must read for serious students, and lovers of this genre in photography.

The love and respect that DeCarava and Hughes felt for Harlem and the people who lived there is on every page.

a classic!

So happy to have found the classic at a reasonable price!

Wonderful edition of this classic!

Just received the paperback. Did not realize it would be such a bad decision to get the paperback. The book is 6 3/4" x 4 1/8" and nearly 1 3/4" thick. The inside margin is only 1/8" which means you have to break the binding to read every page. There's no way this book is going to hold up. Getting the hardcover which is 6 3/4" x 9 1/2". Should eliminate the problem.

I grew up playing Scrabble and Upwords with my great aunts, and this was the Holy Grail - always out on the table during games and consulted often when I would try and get a word by them. If the word you played wasn't in the Scrabble dictionary, by heavens, it didn't count and no amount of arguing would help you.As I pass my love of playing board games onto my kids, I've noticed that I, too, insist upon deference to the Scrabble dictionary. My kids want to play words that I would argue are slang or abbreviations (E.g., "LOL, BTW, hot mess). This updated Scrabble dictionary takes the large generation gap into account and is updated to includes many of today's words, most of which I don't know (seriously, what is listicle??). I purchased the hard cover version based on the other reviews here, and thankfully, we did not have the printing errors that others mentioned.Another unintended benefit of using the Scrabble dictionary is having my kids look up the word in dispute - to this generation of 8 year olds - an actual dictionary is as arcane as a phone book, both of which caused great excitement when they showed up at the house.I look forward to this updated Holy Grail to be the final arbiter of our family Banagram and Scrabble disputes - in fact, I have already consulted it and told my daughters that "LOL" isn't a recognized "word" in the Scrabble dictionary, and therefore, doesn't count, ending such squabbles with a parental equivalent of a mic drop (also not a recognized word).

Excited to recieve my book as I play scrabble with an 90 year old resident. However after looking through book i noticed that the pages starting with m through p are not put together in numarical order. It starts the ms then goes to p then the rest of ms then rest of ps...kind of bummed

We received the jacketed hardcover just a few minutes ago and upon examining the book we noted that the contents was upside down and reversed from the outside cover. We have not seen that before. As far as we know that is the only issue. Too bad that we spent $25.95 for it. For now we just reversed the jacket just a shame that the printers got this thing messed up. Anyone else had that issue.?

My mom (who is 86) and I are avid Scrabble players. When I got my book, the first word I looked up was "zen" and it was in there! ...so was "vape." I also like the sections in the back that list the words with q not followed by u, and 2- to 7- letter words with no AEIOU vowels; however, the latter would have been more helpful (and succinct) with no AEIOUY letters. I hope someone prints a list of just the new words (about 6,500) so we can familiarize ourselves with those, regardless of how "ridic" they are. I remember when we discovered XI and QI - it did a world of good to our score.

Presumably the primary purpose of this dictionary is to determine the validity of specific words. In the previous edition, you simply entered the word in the search bar and it returned either the word entry or a "no result" response. The new search function shows every instance of the letter combination without regard to whether it is a word or not. For example, the entry "ce" (not a word) results in more than 1,000 hits, with entries such as "reproduced" "preface" and "abduce." This is essentially useless if your purpose is to check on the validity of a word.

Missing the word “during”

Got the hardcover after reading reviews - It is a well made book but not too heavy. It would be impossible to learn it all unless you have a lot better memory than I have. I have decided on a plan to get the most out of it. I have ordered highlighters in all the different colors in order to organize the words and hopefully learn a few in the process. My current plan is to highlight all the two letter words in one color, all the three letter words in a different color, the high scoring words that are likely to get used in a different color. Hopefully, it will be like making a cheat sheet so I learn something in the process. Also in the process, I hope to notice useful new words that I’m not familiar with but highlighting them would mean highlighting the whole book. I will have to come up with a method of deciding if a new word is worth remembering to maybe just be used for Scrabble.

If You Come Softly, by Jacqueline Woodson

Review

* "Once again, Woodson handles delicate, even explosive subject matter with exceptional clarity, surety and depth. In this contemporary story about an interracial romance, she seems to slip effortlessly into the skins of both her main characters. . . . Both voices convincingly describe the couple's love-at-first-sight meeting and the gradual building of their trust. The intensity of their emotions will make hearts flutter, then ache as evidence mounts that Ellie's and Jeremiah's 'perfect' love exists in a deeply flawed society. Even as Woodson's lyrical prose draws the audience into the tenderness of young love, her perceptive comments about race and racism will strike a chord with black readers and open the eyes of white readers."--Publishers Weekly, starred review"Woodson offers readers a poetically conceived novel of young love, permeated with complications of family dynamics, racism, and violence. . . . Woodson unerringly limns the delicate intensity and passionate innocence of first love. . . . The two points of view effectively communicate the loneliness of the two sensitive teenagers and their breathless delight in discovering one another. Characterization is solid and well-developed as both parents and frirends focus into reality through the eyes of Miah and Ellie. Their conversations ever so gently open up issues of racism, self-awareness, and moral consciousness."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"Woodson perceptively explores varieties of love, trust, and friendship, as she develops well-articulated histories for both families. . . . A tale as rich in social and personal insight as any of Woodson's previous books."--Kirkus Reviews"Lyrical narrative. . . . This fine author once again shows her gift for penning a novel that will ring true with young adults as it makes subtle comments on social situations."--School Library Journal"As in all her fiction, Woodson confronts prejudice head-on."--Booklist "Gracefully told."--KLIATT

I first read this book a little over a year ago, maybe longer, for my young adult literature class. I had to present on it and procrastinated, of course, so I read it from a critical approach. I don't even think I finished the whole thing--just got close to the end and spark notes the rest. Now that I've read it for pleasure instead of analysis I love it even more! I love how mature Ellie and Miah seem. The reader has to keep reminding themselves (as does Jacqueline Woodson throughout other character's dialogue and their inner thoughts) they are only 15. I like that the thoughts on interracial relationships are viewed through the minds of young people and that the reader can see how Ellie grows from being naive to aware of the problems non-white people face.Beyond the race factor, the love between Miah and Ellie is so real, true, genuine, and easy. They came together because they were meant to. I love that they are essentially the same person in their feelings and loneliness which in turn bonds them in a way no one can understand. The tragic ending upset me but also really humbled the situation. It brought life back in the mix, showed reality, ripping the reader out of the dream escape previously created.Besides the grammar issues, this book is amazing, very fast and emotionally moving. Go read it now. Everyone should be able to relate to at least one character or situation.

This book makes my list of favorite books of all time, so much so that I've purchased it 5 times, yes FIVE. I lend it out and never get it back because its that good. Its a quick read, but a necessary one that pulls at your heart strings.Buy it, read it, love it. But don't lend it out because you won't get it back.

I should have known better...I've been touched by Jaqueline Woodson's writing before.I picked up If You Come Softly after one of my 6th grade students recommended it to me. I read the first few chapters effortlessly, and when someone asked me what it was about, I simply said, "Not much." You see--it's not an in your face narrative. It's simple and soft, and the alternating perspectives are hardly noticed--all signs of outstanding writing. I was halfway through the book before I realized the gentle power of the story.Ellie and Miah attend the same school and have similar views of the world, but they are so different that their sudden love for each other seems impossible. Ellie is the white daughter of a distantly married couple; her numerous brothers and sisters are older and have moved throughout the country. Miah is the black son of celebrities who have recently separated. Both teenagers attend the exclusive Percy School, which is where they meet by chance and fall in love. Despite the stares and whispers, they choose to stay together and learn more about each other. Their love is mature and real (and the author spares us from unnecessary sex scenes). We know from page one that tragedy awaits this relationship, but it doesn't damper the unfolding of their relationship and our interest in the potential of their lives. They love each other innocently and completely, and they tip-toe cautiously into the world of each other's families.Woodson demonstrates a world view through the voices of these two high school characters--they understand more about race relations than most adults do. There are times, however, when their views of races seems too simplistic--perhaps this was intentional, or perhaps this is Woodson's own view. It's too easy to group together all "whites" or all "blacks" and to create stereotypes of old ladies who stare. But the overall message is appreciated.I can't say enough about the gentle nature of this story. How an author can provoke so much emotion in such a delicately written story is truly amazing. Woodson is a masterful writer, and this story is perfectly told.

A beautifully written story about love. That old adage that people "fall" in love is so true. You just kind of stumble upon it. Love happens to any and everyone!

I loved this story. It was beautiful and very sad. I was a bit disappointed that the author didn't delve more into how the characters handled the negative reactions from people who didn't agree with their relationship but overall, the story told an important message.

Jeremiah Roselind is an intelligent black teenage boy who has to attend a fancy prep school. He bumps into Ellie Eisen, a white girl, in the hallway, and they are immediately attracted to one another. Disapproving glances, whispering voices, snide remarks -it isn't the reactions from other people that tear this young couple apart before their relationship has a real chance to grow, but a tragic event. This is an interesting, well-written story about interracial dating. I was saddened by the ending, but at the same time I can't wait to read the sequel, Behind You.

An absolute beautifully written book! It is a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

I read this with my 8th grader, and it was not a very compelling story. The ending was so abrupt and unexpected.

This is a light, dishy read. It's better than the "Andy Cohen Diaries" (which I read before this one) and Cohen is likable and funny in it. I'm a housewives fan so I enjoyed his take on the franchises. If you're not a fan...you might be bored with those sections as others have noted but it's stands up well even if you have to skip those sections. Cohen's not exactly a "deep" guy -- or perhaps he hides that side -- so don't expect much more than light, fun reading and quippy anecdotes. He's definitely most talkative and I'll bet he's been successful because people like to listen. I especially enjoyed his stories about meeting soap star Susan Lucci. I'm not a soap fan but his self-deprecating humor had me laughing out loud in more than once place.

I have been a Bravo fan for a very long time. In fact, I started watching the Real Housewive's franchise from day one of the Orange County ladies. Andy Cohen was kind of a known extra cast member of sorts, to those of us who have followed these shows. I think everyone who knows him, loves him! Honestly, Andy Cohen has a great sense of humor, and a way of saying what he thinks about these women's crazy antics without really saying it and showing his bias. In short, most fans of the network love Andy. The thing I loved about his book was the candid way he talked about his own life and his own experience growing up and coming out as a gay man. I did find it interesting that Andy seems to write of his coming out as part of his life, but not the defining feature of his life. In coming out, his family seemed to embrace him and move on with life, so the person he speaks of with greatest fear was his good friend and college roommate. I was so moved by his expression of fear and concern over telling his friend and really could start to appreciate how that must have felt for him. In the end, his roommate embraced his coming out and the two are still good friends today. There seems to be an integral connection between Andy's pop-culture obsession and his current job, all fueled by healthy doses of all that is uniquely Andy. His memoir talks about his early days on national, morning television--including stories about Oprah Winfrey, various CBS news anchors, and other celebrities that made this a real page turner. Just the stories behind the Housewives franchise (which really is a pretty small portion of the book), make it a must read for fans.I really enjoyed Andy's story. There is such a nice mix of happy and serious, to really echo what we see with the real Andy Cohen on his show. His anecdotes and memories are funny, fast-paced, and engaging. Now I will just hope that he writes another book, with more great "behind the scenes" stories for us in a few years down the road!

I happen to be a fan of Andy Cohen via the Bravo tv network. I love the shows on that network, which include the various "Real Housewives of __________" (fill in the blank), Top Chef, Flipping Out, etc. I also happen to like Mr Cohen's evening half-hour talk show that follows most weekday night programming. Because of my appreciation of the network shows and the knowledge I have of Andy Cohen as a result of his show and his various appearances he has made on other networks, I really LOVED this autobiography. It was like sitting down with a friend and enjoying his perspective/GOSSIP on the various aspects of both his career and the things currently happening behind the scenes on shows I enjoy. He has the same easy-breezy-funny manner of talking he displays on his talk show. It's a fun read. Andy Cohen is brutally honest, funny, matter-of-fact and over-the-top at the same time.I didn't give it 5 stars only because I suspect, if you are not familiar with Andy Cohen, if you don't appreciate the Bravo network and its shows, you will not enjoy the book at all. If you are a fan, you will truly enjoy this read!

Andy Cohen has become a wonderful mixture of producer, talent himself, and fun,all while retaining the same fascination and awe (in some cases) of celebrity and pop culture that makes watching WWHL a delight. That combination seems extremely rare as many celebrities these days seem so jaded and entitled. Throughout the book, the juxtapositions between his parents in St. Louis and his experiences climbing the industry ladder never stop. Not only are these fun to read, but they illustrate his love and appreciation for his parents (who seem as great & fun themselves, especially you've seen them on his show!) whose home encouraged his love of the television industry. Thank you Evelyn and Lou! Andy has managed just the perfect mix of his professional story, even managing to include some very worthwhile career lessons that are applicable anywhere, his personal life experiences (very interesting to read about his process of 'coming out' in a time before being gay was understood as part of biology, not choice, and the trials that went in hand - especially for those of us that were young during the period of uncertainty re: AIDS), and super-fan moments he unflinchingly recounts, regardless of any embarrassment, again seeming uncensored- proving he doesn't take himself so seriously. These super-fan moments happen all the way through his career, popping in at just the right moments in the book. While we're reading about the evolution of his career, it's not only fascinating itself but with said fan moments included, there is never a part of the book where I considered skipping a page or two, as other books of this nature can warrant. You never know what fascinating tidbit will pop up, which keeps readers truly involved and wanting more. Anyone who has dreamt of working in entertainment will of course love reading this (and will learn what not to do at times as well), along with (more importantly for any readers in the industry itself) what TO do. For Bravo TV fans, which I am, we do get the dish on the shows, and some very revealing stories about the personalities off-screen. Andy wrote so well that at times he only needs a few sentences to convey the essence of these "Bravolebrities", often confirming our impressions. Fear not, Housewives fans, there's a lot of entertaining behind the scenes info and stories as well that are told in full chapters. The bottom line is this really is a great book! Regardless of the initial reason of interest that compells you to read it, you'll soon be sucked in by Andy's candor and wit. As I said above, after 20 plus years in the industry, he's still not jaded and is remarkably self-depricating, which is great fun for readers. If you want to read about Andy's life, you'll soon be hooked on reading about his work and vice-versa.Bottom line (thus ending my rambling) is that this is a must-read and will draw you in quickly. I'm regretting not reading it until now and I read everyday. Big mistake on my end! Grab your copy now, grab your rations of food & drink, turn your ringer off and get comfy. You won't want any interruptions while in Andy-land!

This book is great for planning and during the journey. So far, I have driven only the top portion, but the mile-marker detail and the info about the towns on the trip are really helpful. I appreciate the honest "time-it-takes" info about the drive also; it keeps one honest in planning. I gave this to a friend who lives a few miles off of the Trace, and he was surprised by how much he didn't know! Thanks so much!!

We used this book for a trip in October all the way from Nashville to New Orleans and followed it most of the way down the Parkway - it was a wonderful guide. It provided many good suggestions for sights along the Parkway and in nearby cities and towns. Highly recommend.

I purchased this book for our planned trip to the Natchez Trace. It has lots of good information.

Just got back from my trip and this has to be one of the best books I’ve ever purchased, so informative and gives great detailed information about each stop on the Natchez Trace.

Awsome!

If planning a trip is frustrating for you, buy this book. Everything you need to know and see is here.

Not bad. Didn't provide much extra on Natchez or the Natchez Trace - but a useful guide none-the-less.

I literally used an early copy of this book to assist a very recent road trip from Nashville to New Orleans. It's so well-written and the information is up-to-date. You might be able to use a GPS to get from one place to the other, but this is the way to get there in style and have some great experiences. Highly recommended.

Never disappointed with Dinesh! Truly a gifted writer/ producer!

I was not expecting the level of rigor in addressing fundamental questions about Christianity.Dinesh takes the topic head on using the dialectic academic approach to answer the questions. The book is very well provenanced with hundreds of citations. All that you hear in popular culture is Christian bashing. If you have a sense of history at all, you have to wonder what is true and what is not?Dinesh demonstrates what many have long postulated, the rise of science and the Enlightenment in Europe was fueled by Christianity. There is a sister book to this one that complements it well, “the Politically Incorrect Guide to Christianity.”I recommend reading both of these books.Well done Dinesh!

This is my very first review and I am not "learned." In fact, I am a very simple guy. I'm Catholic and I feel relatively knowledgeable of my religion and the only reason I bought "What's So Great About Christianity" is because of the author, Dinesh D'Souza. I saw him in a debate with a liberal underground terrorist who hates America, and I very much respected the fact that Dinesh loves America and defended our country so vigorously--and even used biblical scripture to describe its exceptional nature. Even though Dinesh is a scholar, the book is written at a level that even the basic reader can readily understand, and it is for Christian believers and non-believers alike. For persons at my simple level of thought, it provoked visions of creation and evolution such as the difference of WHO did it verses…WHAT happened? CREATION is of God and is the beginning. Evolution is of man, and about continuation, change, adaptation, and survival over time.Yet, Dinesh's book certainly does not stop there; that's only the beginning: There's Christianity and Limited Government, Science (Heck, I made the connection between Genesis and the medical term "genes"), the Theological Roots of Science, Christianity and the Invention of Invention, and I loved the chapter on Why Miracles are Possible ( It made me think how people want spectacles to see rather than miracles to believe. And how we couldn't even conceive of a miracle if none had ever happened. All things are possible. Or, how miracles don’t prove what is impossible; they confirm what is possible). Then, there's the old "Christian Inquisition" issue: Dinesh explores it with a sense of openness and critique, yet without bias.Toward the end, Dinesh speaks to Atheism, Why Unbelief is So Appealing, and Where the Atheists Are When Bad Things Happen. While Dinesh does not indict atheists for their wait and see posture, he does make a very strong case for the rest of us--especially our youth--not to be taken in by their highly emotional rhetoric and pseudo-science claims that sound so "good" and "right."Ultimately, Dinesh speaks to Why Man is More Than Matter. We are God's creation and God's light in the world. Our nature is light. As I read I could envision a darkened room, but the moment we turned on a light--the darkness of the room is dispersed and chased away. And it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for one week or 30 years, when our light switch is on--darkness is gone. So when Dinesh talks about man being more than matter--he's absolutely right. There's the "problems of man", and then there's "man as the problem." We must believe who and what we are. Dinesh spells it out for us in his wonderful book, What's So Great About Christianity.

I have been a Presbyterian pastor and bible teacher for over forty years and now am honorably retired, I continue to teach and study the faith of Jesus Christ. Controversial conservative scholar the Indian born Dinesh D'Souza is famous for his political book but this is my favorite of all his tomes! In it D'Souza launches a spirited and well researched defense of the Christian Church against atheism. The Church is an anvil which has worn out many hammers wielded by the challenges of modern atheists such as Christopher Hitchens, Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins and many others.D'Souza shows in this book:a. How the church has not been opposed to scientific inquiryb. The author asserts that the basis of Western Society lies on the foundation of Christian morality and teaching over the centuries.c. Good chapters in the book explore the Big Bang Theory and assert that the universe was created by God.d. D'Sousza shows how Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world and is particularly strong in Africa and South America. D'Souza's book should be read by all interested Chrstians and non-Christians who wish to keep abreast of religion in America and the world. Well recommended!

I really admire D'Souza's writing style and how he presents the argument. This is a great apologetics book. I really love how he uses the secular point of view to defend Christianity, so that is a heads up for readers who are used to defending Christianity from the Christian view point. I could not put the book down as he defends Christianity from so many different angle rather than just the evolution versus creation argument so commonly heard.

Absolutely fabulous book. This is more of an intellectual read. There is nothing wrong with a book full of stories about how people were one way, then became a Christian, and they were changed for the good. This is NOT one of those books. This book will make you think. You do not have to accept any human being's word for it that God either exists or does not exist. You should investigate it for yourself. Everyone probably agrees that it is an important question to get answered. If you are an atheist, agnostic, or a Christian, this will probably be an interesting book for you.
