"The Secret Gospel" was written by Morton Smith, a professor of ancient history at Columbia University. It tells how, while he was cataloging the contents of the monastery library at Mar Saba south of Jerusalem in 1958, he discovered a copy of a letter of Clement, a second-century saint. The letter describes a secret gospel of Mark which tells of Jesus practicing secret rites. Apparently, this gospel was intended for the spiritually elite. It was not included in the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament. This Gospel is either one of the most important discoveries of the 20th Century or an amazing modern forgery -- presumably by Smith. The evidence is equivocal. Read it and decided for yourself.
This book was a terrific find, I had heard about it while reading Holy Blood, Holy Grail. The basis for the book is a letter by Clement of Alexandria written sometime between 150 and 215 in which the church father is caught red-handed editing the Gospel of Mark. So much for the Christian claim that the gospels are the word of God and haven't been altered in any way. Christian apologists have been trying ever since to claim that the letter is a fraud but the community of Clement scholars have long accepted it's authenticity.In addition to this book there's also Bart Erlman's book, Misquoting Jesus, which demonstrates that the gospels were edited right up to the publication of the King James Version.What makes the Secret Gospel so explosive is that it contains an early telling of the Lazarus story in which it's obvious that Lazarus was not dead but had sealed himself inside his tomb as part of a spiritual practice, spending three days fasting in auditory, visual, and time depredation which was certainly a recipe for inducing an altered state of mind.Jesus then stays with this individual for five days continuing his instruction and culminating with a midnight session which also seems designed to induce an altered state of consciousness. (If you've ever studied Shamanism this technique is widely used by shamans to initiate a spiritual journey along with rhythmic drumming.)The instigating factor in Clement's letter is that a copy of the gospel has gotten out, it was supposed to have been read only by those in the order, and he's making quick edits before putting out a version that had the secret practices removed. And then in a move that Karl Rove would admire he tells Timothy that they'll claim that those other guys altered the one true gospel by making additions to it.An excellent read if you seeking the real Jesus instead of the one the orthodox church decided to spoon feed the masses.Other books that will also point you in the right direction are The Jesus Dynasty by James Tabor, The Jesus Discovery: The Resurrection Tomb that Reveals the Birth of Christianity, and Jesus the Magician by Morton Smith.Slowly but surely the historic Yeshua bar Yoseph is emerging from the fog of two thousand years of orthodoxy.
This is my second reading of this book and I'm pleased to say this edition has additional information of the where-abouts of the illicit manuscript. The book is about a short hand written copy taken from the Secret Gospel of Mark and found in a monastery library about the middle of the last century by Dr. Morton Smith. The Secret Gospel of Mark is hypothesized to be a fuller, more complete version of the Gospel of Mark that we have today. The author wrote two books on the topic. This book is the simplified version written for the lay person. It has part of one chapter that seems to fit in the the modern version of the Gospel of Mark. It talks about Jesus doing mystery rites in the Garden the night of his betrayal by Judas. With him was a young man who wore only a linen robe. The modern version of Mark actually mentions this person who escapes when the guards arrest Jesus. They grab his white linen robe and he runs off naked. (See Mark 14:52) It's a fascinating book that suggests the Jesus performed secret initiations similar to mystery religions. Unfortunately, there are a few modern scholars (like Bart Ehman) who have challenged the authenticity of this copy suggesting the Smith was a fraud. Like many zealous Christians, it they don't know what something is or how it fits into their theology, they will try to denounce and devalue it. They seem to be uncomfortable with the idea of Jesus being with a naked man wearing only a linen robe. It it too homoerotic for them. To this we can only shake our heads in shame. For NO ONE would have challenged the integrity of Morton Smiths scholarship while he was living, let alone suggest he was a fraud. Like most cowards they waited until he passed to voice any opposition. Personally, I love the book and would recommend it to anyone who is secure enough in their beliefs that it will not be shaken by something new.
