I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this book due to what I consider to be a pretty steep price for a paperback cookbook. So I will start out by saying that my expectations were high. This would normally be the perfect set-up for a disasterous purchase.However, my high expectations were met. They were not exceeded, but they were met. That's why I am giving this book four stars.1. I expect a Japanese-authored book on Japanese cuisine to have artful and appetizing color photographs. Check.2. I expect a Japanese-authored book on Japanese cuisine to have detailed recipes not just in easy to follow text, but also in illustrated color photos detailing every step of the way. Check.3. I expect a Japanese-authored book on Japanese cuisine to have basic cooking tips that are unique to Japanese cooking (why would an English speaker purchase a book on Japanese cuisine if they already knew Japanese culinary techniques?). Check.4. I expect a Japanese-authored book on Japanese cuisine to at least have a few recipes that I have not seen elsewhere in my other books on Japanese cusine authored by a Japanese native that make me want to try them. Check.So my expectations were met.It was the extras that I really appreciated however: the section at the end of the book detailing Japanese knife cutting methods for vegetables and fish, together with the section at the end of the book suggesting Japanese menus for home and picnic.To me these extra sections alone justify the rather pricey cost of this paperback book. I'd recommend this book to any English speaking foreigner (a Japanese person would buy a book on Japanese cuisine written in the Japanese language of course) who wants to learn not just Japanese recipes but Japanese cooking, cutting, and aesthetic techniques. For that alone, this book is worth its cost (and if it cost less my rating would have been higher).By the way, I lived and worked in Japan years ago so am somewhat experienced in Japanese cuisine, although by no means an expert or kaiseki master.

If you are looking for a beginners cookbook for Japanese cuisine, this is the one! Easy to follow recipes with ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. I did have to locate a Japanese market for some of the more traditional foods but what a fun excursion I had that day! The first meal attempted was shrimp tempura with soba noodles and it was fabulous. The back of the book is a goldmine of information with guides for food prep, cooking tips, and ingredients that include drawings and pictures. You cook like a pro starting with your very first recipe. So far my son and I have successfully made tonkatsu (pork cutlet), a slight variation of the Sukiyaki recipe, and the shrimp tempura with noodle. Learning how to make authentic Japanese sauce and soup bases are well worth the cost of the book. Tonight is chicken with udon noodle. Yum!

I bought this book from a Japanese bookstore in "Japan Town" in San Francisco on vacation. I am online now buying more for my friends. I compared this book with every other english language Japanese cookbooks in the store (and there were MANY). I found this one to be superior to the rest as it contained everything I would need to prepare meals. I should mention I have lived in Japan for 5 years and have a good feel for what is authentic. This book has allowed me to create some very nice meals at home approaching resturant quality of those found in Japan. I expecially like the pictures that show all the steps of the preparation including pictures of the ingredients. Also included is a section that shows how food is served (presentation on table).Honestly, I don't see how you can go wrong buying this book. Its inexpensive and contains EVERY aspect you need to be sucessful: tools and utensils, knife skills, ingredients, recipies, and presentation.Now I just wish I could find similar books for Greek, Italian, Thai, and so on...-Steve MaerckleinAustin, Texas

After being an exchange student in Japan, I found myself longing for the foods my host mom made, and decided to try cooking them myself! (Despite my absolute inability to cook previous to this.) This book provides recipies that taste exactly like the foods that could be found both at my host mom's table and at Japanese restaurants. They're easy to follow, include lots of photos to illustrate each step, and allow for improvisation for ingredients that are sometimes hard to find. I recommend Quick and Easy Japanese Cuisine highly for those looking to start (or continue) a cullinary adventure!

I have been living in Japan for 3 years and we are about to move back to the U.S. One of my Japanese friends pulled out her copy of this book to give me some recipes. She actually bought it when she lived in the U.S. so she would have English language versions of recipes to give her American friends. She found this book to be very close to her mother's and grandmothers' way of cooking. The recipes are easy to follow and the illustrations of preparation techniques are very helpful even for someone without any prior knowledge of Japanese food preparation.

Happy to find this. It was a Christmas present and looked good when just leafing through before wrapping.

Since buying this book plus Wiersbe’s New Testament Commentary, l have suddenly gone from scrambling all the time, to an embarrassment of riches, where there’s so much material that l get bogged down. I’ve bought a bunch of books, but Wiersbe’s are the absolute most useful. Highly recommend. With these plus the free Bible images website, you’re golden. (You’ll thank me. You’re welcome.) 😁

"The Wiersbe Bible Commentary: The Complete Old Testament" is all of Wiersbe's Old Testament "Be" commentaries collected together, word-for-word, in one edition.WHAT'S THE SAME: the commentary. Every word has been preserved, from Genesis through Malachi.WHAT'S MISSING: the "Be" themed titles ("Be Basic"; "Be Delivered"; etc.); the "Study Questions" that were at the end of each "Be" book.WHAT'S NEW: a 2-page introduction by Pastor Wiersbe.CONS: To fit all of these commentaries into one volume they had to shrink the type size way down to something like a 6-point font. The footnotes are especially tiny and I have to lean close to see what's on the page. That's not a big problem for me because I have pretty average vision, but if you rely on large-print, you may as well skip this edition or else get a magnifying glass.Another potential problem is that the paper is so thin and the margins so tiny. I suppose they had to be so all of these wonderful books would fit into one volume. For example, Wiersbe's original commentary on Joshua, "Be Strong" is 168 pages, plus 12 pages of "Study Questions". Here they have squeezed the commentary text, word-for-word, onto 49 pages. They squeezed all of the books down into 1533 pages, each one thin as a razor's edge. This becomes a problem when you want to write notes in the margins. My pen bleeds through this extremely thin paper. Also, the margins are only about 1/4-inch-- not a lot of room to write. If you like to interact with a book, pen in hand, this edition probably isn't your best option.PROS: This edition is an outstanding value. Each of Wiersbe's Old Testament "Be" commentaries costs between 8 and 10 dollars, so look at the price of this edition and do the math. It's a steal.The binding feels solid, and when I open it to a page it stays open instead of closing on me.And while I criticized the font size, I have no problems with the actual font. It's very readable. And the use of bold print is helpful for seeing the layout of the book. It's very well organized.Finally, Wiersbe's writing style is accessible and the conclusions he draws from the Biblical text have proven practical and helpful in my walk with the Lord. He's not quite as folksy and "down-to-earth" as J. Vernon McGee, but he has the same passion for putting God's Word out there for the common people who want to understand how God wants them to live.CONCLUSION: I didn't have hundreds of dollars to spend on the original "Be" books, so I got this volume. While there are some drawbacks (tiny print size and margins, thin paper, no "Study Questions"), I'll treasure this edition and keep using it until I lose my eyesight.

Print very small

The Lord has truly blessed Warren Wiersbe. My only wish is that I could have sat under him during his time as pastor as I would have loved to hear his sermons first hand (though I listen to them over the radio all the time). For those who are familiar with Warren Wiersbe, this book reads just like you are hearing one of his wonderful sermons, while also giving you the feeling of talking with a friend over a cup of coffee. I can literally hear his voice as he explains parts of scripture (which he does in great depth). This book sits beside my bed, along with my Bible, when I'm away and have forgotten to bring this commentary, I truly miss it!

Excellent commentary on the Old Testament. He has some great insights. I was going through some pain with some fool attacking me. I read his comments on a fool in the Proverbs section. It was what I needed and helped and comforted me so much. Don't waste your time arguing with a fool or you'll be just like him. I'm still reading the rest of the book.

Bought the Old Testament Volume early last year and have been slowly going through it. Now I amSpotreading sections of the New Testament commentary as the need for research or background unfolds. This is my favorite pastoral commentator. The author provides plenty of background for context in easy to understand language. In addition, he provides clear interprtation of each passage along with common sense and practicle application. Great for research, bible study, and preparing bible lessons. I recommend both volumes.TLee

Warren Wiersbe has a way of diving deep into scripture, making deep truths accessible and pastoring you all at the same time. This is a great commentary that gives it all: solid biblical observation, interpretation and application. I use his commentaries almost every time I preach. This volume in particular is great because you have the NT all is one place and you save money.

I already have the "Wiersbe Bible Commentary New Testament" and have found it invaluable in helping me understand passages of the new testament. I have been looking for his commentary on the Old Testament at an affordable price for a while now and am so happy to have found this seller! There is much wisdom in this book!

`I was so excited when I first saw this book, I pre-ordered it and waited impatiently. It finally arrived today and I just thoroughly perused it. It's even better than I'd hoped. It's massive enough to be a coffee table book. The glorious pictures fill whole pages and get this...most pages have no margins: the picture ends where the page does. So the detail is marvelous. Often, a whole portrait is shown, then a close-up of it, then a close-up of the close-up. On a miniature painted of Elizabeth I, you can see the little drops of enamel and the tiny jewels glued into her crown."A picture is worth a thousand words" so I am stunned that such a brand-new and highly-illustrated book has no Look Inside feature[*] because by far, the most important word in the title of the book is ART. In Fine Style is all about the paintings because so very few clothes have survived from the 16th and 17th centuries: we have not one piece of clothing from Henry VIII. But from his court portraitist, Hans Holbein the Younger, to Van Dyck, to van Doort, to Rembrandt, to miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard, we see probably more detail than extant clothing would reveal. This book has over 320 "colour" illustrations and I just get lost in them. Books like this are often breath-taking on illustration but the writing is lacking...or the text is great but the pictures are too few, too small or in b&w. However, this book is the perfect marriage of both. Anna Reynolds's handling of the 262 numbered illustrations allows you to seamlessly (excuse the pun) pass back and forth from the text to the image, and to page back and forth through the book to find connected information: the figures are easy to find from the text describing them and the captioning is particularly clear.There are 4 areas of interest covered here: reenacting and historic costumes, needlework, history and portraiture. There is a whole chapter of 50 pages entitled simply Painting Dress so art students should go crazy. The front cover tells you everything: it's all about the style and how it was conveyed in the over-the-top luxury of the Tudor and Stuart dynasties.Let's be clear what this book is: it's NOT The Tudor Tailor: Reconstructing Sixteenth-Century Dress. Even though the chapters of the book include: Dressing Women, Dressing Men, Dressing Children, Painted for Battle and the Hunt, re-enactors will not be able to use this book to pattern much of the dress they desire. And don't get your hopes up when you see the final chapter is entitled Playing A Part...that is mostly about the masques and exotic clothes the queens of James I and Charles I liked to wear and not what you would see at a renaissance faire. But the book is invaluable to convey the spirit and atmosphere of style that re-enactors want to emulate.My big interest is needlework and needlework history and this book satisfies my desire to see up close just how much decorative stitchery was a vehicle for conveying the richest elements of dress and accoutrement: gold or silver thread attached precious jewels to almost every dress Elizabeth wore. Contemporary inventories reveal that Elizabeth may have owned 3,000 dresses during her life. Elizabethan and Jacobean needlework is an area of keen interest currently and this book is jam-packed with them.Another big interest of mine is Tudor--particularly Elizabethan--history. I was not disapointed when I received this book. I do costuming in the SCA in the late Elizabethan style. I am constantly on the look out for more information and this book has plenty. It is a large format with plenty of close ups on details which I always find exordinary in paintings of this period. Then, it covers the whole range of Tudor through the Stewart periods sometime juxtaposing the information and paintings. I feel this examination is very helpful in gaining fresh perspectives. Please keep in mind that this is not a how-to book but an examination of the styles, culture, and history of that time. I haven't finished reading it yet but I feel I can safely say that I will turn to it many times when trying to recreate this clothing.

Great photos and some wonderful closeups. Most of the info is for 1600 and after, but there is a reasonable amount of stuff for the Elizabethan/Henrician people (20-30%, maybe). Not much info about actual clothing construction, and the embroidery information is not new either, but the pictures make up for that. They do try to compare portraits to actual extant garments when possible, which is fun. There is a fair amount of information on the actual painting techniques if you're interested in that, but I'm not qualified to judge the quality of that.

Although, as it must, it relays greatly on painting of the Tudor and Stuart period, there are many pictures of actual surviving clothing. Over sized book full of wonderful color pictures and close ups of parts of various garments. The book is written with great style and explanations of what was worn when, by whom and why. Showing how the style of Italy, France, etc., influenced the English style. And the influence of England on the style of the Low Countries. A must for the costumer or anyone who appreciates art of the period or just a beautiful book.

This is a marvelous book! First - the photographs of art work from Tudor and Stuart times are beautifully done in both close ups and full frames, showing all the bits of fashion under discussion and fully identified as to subject and artist. I saw many portraits of people I had read about often as a history buff. Secondly, the discussion puts their clothing into their time, with information about all the impact their religions and culture had upon their choice of fabrics, decoration, and styles, from shoes and underwear to hats, cloaks and jewelery, and everything underneath. As a needleworker myself, I so appreciated the details provided and all the work that went in to these fashions, so few of which remain for us to see now except in the portraits left to us. The book was a delight from cover to cover, and well worth the price.

The book itself is top quality - pages, binding, dust cover are all coffee-table worthy. Beyond this - and the reason I purchased it - the illustrations are plentiful and stunning, and the text detailed and informative. As a person steeped in, and fascinated by, Tudor history, I think this book provides a rich layer of visual context.

I really can't say enough about this book. The photos of the art are wonderful (many have both close up details of the paintings and clothing, along with the full view) and the text is very interesting and informative as well.Bravo Anna Reynolds! Keep them coming - I'll keep buying!

This is one of the most beautiful and informative books I have ever owned. I am an artist interested in collage as well as painting, and this is an inspiration for both because of the exquisite detail photographs of paintings and original items of clothing. I also love fashion and am interested in sewing again. As a former illustrator, the explanations of how the various forms of dress and headdress worked, and why is fascinating. And, I am fond of this period in history. I am so happy to have this book.

I am slowly collecting the whole series of these to read to my kids during breakfast instead of letting them watch a TV show. My 5-year old especially loves them. I will usually play some of the pieces mentioned throughout the week. Last night, my daughter was running around trying to find this book because she heard Brahms' Lullaby on her baby sister's toy and she wanted to show her dad that she had learned about the composer. They are written on a good level to appeal to a wide range of early to later elementary kids.

Simple and basic intro to this composer for younger children. I don’t love the illustrations, but overall it’s fine for the price.

As a teacher, I love this series! My goal is to teach my 3rd graders about the famous artists and composers. This series makes it easy, fun, and interesting!

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rockies by Linda KershawAn important book for those in the Northern and Central Rocky mountain areas as well as other areas in the West. This is a photo-based guide focusing on the identification of wild edible plants. Kershaw's book, like other Lone Pine publications, covers lots of material. Brief descriptions of foods and medicines, often referring to uses by Native American Peoples, are given for each plant.Like the other books in this section, there is no detailed processing information. This book covers 182 'kinds' of plants using about 350 photographs and 73 illustrations. A 'kind' for instance, is 'all docks', or 'all Oregon Grapes' discussed together. A 'Pictorial Guide', just after the Table of Contents, shows rows and columns of small duplicate pictures of all plants covered in the book for quick reference. Many people love this 'Pictorial Guide' concept in the field because it can help them quickly find the plant they are trying to identify. ........ About 20% of the plants covered can be found in various places across North America. Many of the plants covered are not found in other photographic guides. Don't buy this expecting it to be a how-to guide. It contains interesting information on historical and current uses for the plants, but it's information on identification, preparation, and usage of plants is lacking quite a bit. The first sentence in the intro of the book says it's not a how-to book, yet that is not including in the Amazon product description. The descriptions of the plants are barely enough to help identify them in the wild, and I would not feel confident using this book as a reference when deciding whether something I find will harm me or help me.

The book has some good information, some not found elsewhere. It doesn't seem to be from personal experience, but from research. Although it has lovely photos, they really focus on the flowers, many with little or no leaf showing. There are descriptions but not drawings or photos of all the plant parts needed to identify all of the plants, so supplemental field guides may be needed. Also uses descriptions of ranges that seem incomplete- sometimes citing whole states/provinces which quite often isn't true based on varied terrains. Overall a good book and a good addition to a field guide collection. I wouldn't recommend it to stand alone.

Living in Idaho, most of these plants are native to my area. Not all but most. This is my favorite book to take with me on hikes or backpacking trips, lets me identify so many flowers and shrubs that I never knew could do things to the human body.I highly recommend this book to anyone in the rocky area who wants to learn more about the plants in the area. It's great and easy to read, even for people with little to no plant knowledge! The bright colored pages make it SUPER easy to identify, plus the book will tell you if two plants look similar and how to differentiate the two.

During a 3.5 week long camping adventure all over Colorado, this book as served me well in identifying plants and guiding my foraging efforts. It has certainly helped me connect deeper to my camping experiences and I will take this with me on all my hikes, backpacking and camping trips from now on.I had the opportunity to forage some prickly red currants, oregon grapes, bearberries/manzanitas, canadian buffalo berries (aka. soapberries), and rose hips. I also found common plantain and tried thistle buds for the first time.

I won't go into great detail because the reviews already do a really good job of it. I was looking for a reference for hiking and fishing to augment my emergency survival kit and increase my knowledge. More of a "just in case" rather than "I intend to do serious foraging". The book is well organized and the pictures are good, in some instances it tells you how to improve the taste and what the nutritional value is. I believe I should have no problems identifying the plants based upon the photos in this book and look forward to expiramenting with some of the plants on future hiking and fishing outings though I won't try to gather a thanksgiving feast unless I find myself stuck somewhere. I thought I would use this book to get started then buy a larger reference to stay at the house to study up on while using this one as my field book but now I don't think I will need a second book for my needs, someone who is doing serious foraging or medicinal uses on a regular basis may enjoy a more informative book. The book has almost plasticized pages which should be quite durable, although it is surprisingly heavy for it's small size, if you are a minimalist hiker maybe this is better to study at home, for me it will become a item in my backpack once I read it. Regardless of your needs this is probably the book to start with.

for a small book its good, wish the pictures can show more than one view of the plant such in it first growing faze to maturity as I find it hard to distinguish some plants by there pictures, and could use a few more to help narrow down the options of what I am looking at

Bought this for my husband as we have been talking about survival stuff for a few years, Thanx to Naked and Afraid :) Its easy to read and the descriptions are great. My 7 year old loves to find plants when we are camping and looking them up and trying to find them in this book. We live In Montana and so far we have found a few of these in our camp spot. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to explore their area plants.

I bought this wanting to learn about plants in my area. Lets just say I learned a ton more then what I wanted to learn. I packed this baby in my Bug Out bag and didn't even need to put it in a plastic bag because of the cover and what the pages are made out of, WATER PROOF!!! Please buy this, it will teach you so so much important information on what you can eat, how to eat it, medical and they even make sure you know what plant it is by the full color pictures of the plants/trees. Hats off to the company for putting this out to us. WORTH EVERY PENNY, NOW BUY IT AND LEARN LIKE I DID.
