Nine Stories, by J. D. Salinger

Amazon.com Review

In the J.D. Salinger benchmark "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," Seymour Glass floats his beach mate Sybil on a raft and tells her about these creatures' tragic flaw. Though they seem normal, if one swims into a hole filled with bananas, it will overeat until it's too fat to escape. Meanwhile, Seymour's wife, Muriel, is back at their Florida hotel, assuring her mother not to worry--Seymour hasn't lost control. Mention of a book he sent her from Germany and several references to his psychiatrist lead the reader to believe that World War II has undone him. The war hangs over these wry stories of loss and occasionally unsuppressed rage. Salinger's children are fragile, odd, hypersmart, whereas his grownups (even the materially content) seem beaten down by circumstances--some neurasthenic, others (often female) deeply unsympathetic. The greatest piece in this disturbing book may be "The Laughing Man," which starts out as a man's recollection of the pleasures of storytelling and ends with the intersection between adult need and childish innocence. The narrator remembers how, at nine, he and his fellow Comanches would be picked up each afternoon by the Chief--a Staten Island law student paid to keep them busy. At the end of each day, the Chief winds them down with the saga of a hideously deformed, gentle, world-class criminal. With his stalwart companions, which include "a glib timber wolf" and "a lovable dwarf," the Laughing Man regularly crosses the Paris-China border in order to avoid capture by "the internationally famous detective" Marcel Dufarge and his daughter, "an exquisite girl, though something of a transvestite." The masked hero's luck comes to an end on the same day that things go awry between the Chief and his girlfriend, hardly a coincidence. "A few minutes later, when I stepped out of the Chief's bus, the first thing I chanced to see was a piece of red tissue paper flapping in the wind against the base of a lamppost. It looked like someone's poppy-petal mask. I arrived home with my teeth chattering uncontrollably and was told to go straight to bed."

This is a must for English majors, and especially for creative writing students. J.D. Salinger has nine stories that are so different. Each one will make you wonder how he could pack so much into one short story!

Want to read some J.D. but loathe the mere thought of Holden? Me too! What an obnoxious brat. You could be reading about genuine growd-up love and squalor instead of another privileged emo boy whining about how unfair life is. Of course it's unfair. How did the word 'fair' come into existence? It belongs with other made up words like 'social justice' and 'equality.' Watch out for that first story. It packs a wallop. You might also try reading Franny & Zooey. It is about youthful existential angst, but avoids self-indulgent prattle for the most part, and really drives home the degree to which IQ's are currently dropping.

These stories are kind of random and depressing. I liked most of them, but he would tell an entire tale and then the last 2 paragraphs of the story would B Line to a bizarre death or secret fact that changed the entire tone of the tale. Very deep stories that hold up over time and make you think, but mostly feel sad about the world.

These are the nine short stories that helped make Salinger one of the top-rated writers in the English language, or World literature for that matter. I completely agree with this assessment. So much has been said in praise of Salinger and in understanding his style and content, I'll not be able to add anything here. Read and enjoy, but be sure to read his novels as well.

I am incredibly weary of anyone who does not see how excellent this collection is. I grab it every time I see it at a used book sale so I can distribute it to everyone I know. Fantastic.

These stories are among the works that comprise the canon of American literature. I was on a plane, sitting next to a woman who was reading this book and realized that it had been some 40 or so years since I drank in the delights of these characters and their peculiarities. I'm so happy to have them back, safe at home.

The story "For Esme with Love and Squalor" is one of the nine stories in this collection. I remember a critic who wrote that "Esme", the story, was a gloss on the Dostoevski quote Sergeant X writes down. I bought into this at first. With closer reading I find I disagree with this. The quote Sergeant X writes is a way of reaching out and communicating to the Nazi lady,(Salinger actually married a Nazi lady he had arrested after the war, divorce soon followed.), and combating her idea that life is hell with the idea from Dostoevski that hell is the suffering of being unable to love. This latter idea, no matter how true, will not save the Nazi lady. For one thing she will never read it. Also ideas do not save people. Sergeant X realizes this failed attempt when he looks down and the quote is illegible and his own misery is very mich intact. When he reads the letter from Esme, who we remember has been training herself to be more compassionate, this person to person compassion is redemptive for him. Esme has trained herself to surmount her own wall long enough to meet others at the corner where compassion is possible. In the christian story, for example, it is not ideas or doctrine that save people. It takes a person to save a person, as Esme in a very real way saves Sergeant X with her compassion. Salinger participated in five of the major campaigns in WW2 Europe. This story gives you a glimpse of the toll that can take on a man. Thankyou to Salinger and all the others who fought for their country during the war.

"De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" is one of the nine stories in this collection. In the story Daumier-Smith has an enlightening experience and afterwards makes the statement "Everybody is a nun". I originaly thought this "Everybody is a nun" was the same type of statement we find in F&Z and Teddy about everyone being holy. I think he is saying this and more. Salinger was also saying that everyone is a unique holy person in their cloister or behind their own wall. When the shop girl in the display window starts to fall Daumier-Smith reaches out to stop her fall and his fingers hit the glass. He also realizes that she doesn't share his mind, thats why she is startled by his presence, she has a mind and life seperate from his and doesn't really know why he should be standing there looking at her. He realizes the same thing about the nun. She knows nothing of his ideas and dreams about her, she is living her own life unaware of him. In part this is a deliverance from a creeping solipsism for Daumier-Smith. The wall theme is present in "For Esme". What does one wall say to the other? Meetcha at the corner. without this meeting at the corner we are either isolated behind our own wall or just solipsisticaly assume that anothers experience is the same behind their wall as our own. I think Daumier-Smith had an experience of direct seeing of the reality of other selves, their situations and feelings, an empathic moment. He has a moment of pure empathy with the shop girl in the window and this empathy changes him, bringing him out of his self involved world and letting him see others as they are. We are never told exactly what he experiences ,except his vision of the sun hurtling towards the bridge of his nose. After the experience he becomes much more accepting of himself and others, even his hopeless art students who he had formerly snobbishly judged although accurately critiqued. There are allusions in this short story to Rilke, Rodan, Picasso, and of course the French artist Honore Daumier. This is one of Salinger's funniest stories.

I loved this book. Every phrase is elegant and precisely used. This style of composition, once the hallmark of the best writing, will be appreciated by anyone who relishes the English language. This remarkable Queen recounts the victimization of Hawaii and how she and her forbears tried to preserve the islands as a free nation.Hawaii’s loss of nationhood began with the arrival of New England Protestant missionaries, self-righteous and eager to proselytize but before long ready to exploit and dispossess. They and their descendants found chickens ready for plucking: a fertile tropical Island of unsuspecting natives who could be ensnared in crooked politics and cheated in land deals.Gradually Hawaii was transformed. Instead of preserving its self-sustaining rural lifestyle, it became the prey of scavengers, the modern barons. Pre-eminent among them was the Dole family which turned the age-old system of small, personal farms into acres of pineapple fields worked by thousands of Chinese “coolies”.In time, this new, wealthy class, using threats and schemes, succeeded in taking control of the government. The Queen’s predecessors yielded of necessity, unable to prevent the disenfranchisement of the vast majority of native inhabitants. Only a tenth of the populace could now vote.Becoming Queen on the death of her brother, Liliuokalani faced alone the implacable empire builders.Powerful interests were working to join Hawaii to the United States. Admiral Mahan, with his worship of sea power, saw that these magnificent islands offered more than plantations: their central position in the Pacific promised an ideal harbor for provisioning ships, dominating shipping lanes and threatening the Asiatic rim. In the end, the Queen’s enemies resorted to brute force and it was finally the marines who trampled on the rights of the Hawaiian people. The Queen was a truly great lady, highly educated, a remarkable writer, a gifted composer (of that heartbreaking hymn to Hawaii, Aloha Oe). Besides a brilliant mind, she possessed a powerful sense of justice and enormous compassion for her Hawaiian subjects. Her patriotism was the pure kind, not that vicious distortion so diligently nurtured in the conquering nation, that chauvinism which features contempt for other cultures as its hallmark. She repeatedly speaks kindly and admiringly of the United States in all respects but this one: that a nation blessed with endless horizons and all the bountiful gifts of nature should covet yet more land, even islands so far from its shores. In addition, being always able to appreciate personal kindness, she speaks warmly and gratefully of President Grover Cleveland. And she remembers President McKinley as a consummate gentleman toward a woman, a fallen Queen and a supplicant for her nation. Her bitterest scorn is reserved for John Leavitt Stevens, the United States Minister to the Kingdom of Hawaii, whose slander turned the government at Washington and the American public against the Royal Family. John Stevens was a figure of Dickensian evil and duplicity, a liar, traducer, schemer, truly the symbol of everything despicable about American colonial policy. He was a fanatic of the sort any decent person would loathe. Such men are a curse to any nation; how criminal that he should have been foisted on the unfortunate Hawaiians. But of course, like all ambassadors, he was carefully chosen for his dishonesty and unscrupulousness. It is astonishing that there is never a scarcity of ruthless functionaries to be inflicted on foreign lands.John Stevens could be counted on to tell his fellow conspirators in Congress what they wanted to hear. With this type of scoundrel a coup d’etat can be guaranteed, and it was. Besides forcing the Queen to abdicate and imprisoning her to stifle her voice, her enemies did not hesitate to lie. She was accused of threatening to cut off the heads of her country’s persecutors, a calumny taught as late as the1940’s and perhaps later -- in volumes called history books.Occasionally chickens do come home to roost and they came for John Stevens, whose daughter drowned while returning from a trip to one of the islands to gather signatures for another of her father’s crooked schemes. This loss darkened the rest of his life. For the truth about this crime against an island people, I strongly recommend Queen Liliuokalani’s history of colonial aggression and domination ending in the tawdry drama of marines marching ashore and surrounding the government buildings of a sovereign nation.

Found out ASIN: B01M6TP7CS shorts you appendixes D thru G [The Text of the Treaty - How the Cession of the Islands is to be Accomplished , Genealogy of Liliuokalani on Her Mother's Side, Genealogy of Liliuokalani on Her Father's (Kapaakea) side, and Genealogy of Kamehameha - Three Sisters] as well as all of the photos found present as in other versions like ASIN: B01MQL41TZ. Bottom line - an Ok read so long as you don't mind some missing material but otherwise I'd tell you to download ASIN: B01MQL41TZ instead especially if it is priced the same...

This woman was a remarkable "Regal" lady. She wrote with such capability, her sweet, yet humble spirit poured out in every page. Having spent a substantial number of years living in Hawaii, I am very familiar with the stories of the power plays which resulted in the takeover of the Islands by the United States. There is little doubt that this was a very black period in our American History. She spoke with such sadness as her way of life, and the very way of life of her people and country were wrested from them. Hawaii is a part of my emotional DNA -- I love the people and the strong, sweet and kind way they share their lives with all who visit. It is tragic that there are so very few real Hawaiians left today (2017) -- yet the spirit of the islands lives on. Read her story, sing her songs, and feel the spirit of both this remarkable lady, and her incredible life!

Part autobiography, part political history, Queen Lili‘uokalani’s "Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani" tells her story and that of Hawai‘i from her youth through the time of her publication in 1898. The overall impression the reader receives is of a monarchy very similar to those throughout Europe, especially when Queen Lili‘uokalani details her journey to England for Queen Victoria’s jubilee. While these personal stories and travelogues add context, the bulk of the narrative deals with the Hawaiian monarchy and the manner in which American planters subverted it.Writing of Kalakaua and the slanders that followed him, Queen Lili‘uokalani states, “The conclusion cannot be avoided, that if my brother had indeed sought his own pleasure rather than the good of all residents under our flag, his family would be in their hereditary rights to this day. By his liberality to those of American birth he inaugurated the treaty of reciprocity; … and he thus devoted the earlier part of his reign to the aggrandizement of the very persons, who, as soon as they had become rich and powerful, forgot his generosity, and plotted a subversion of his authority, and an overthrow of the constitution under which the kingdom had been happily governed for nearly a quarter of a century” (pg. 96). As to the American planters themselves, Queen Lili‘uokalani writes, “As they became wealthy, and acquired titles and lands through the simplicity of our people and their ignorance of value and of the new land laws, their greed and their love of power proportionately increased; and schemes for aggrandizing themselves still further, or for avoiding the obligations which they had incurred to us, began to occupy their minds” (pg. 209). She adds, “It may be true that they really believed us unfit to be trusted to administer the growing wealth of the Islands in a safe and proper way. But if we manifested any incompetency, it was in not foreseeing that they would be bound by no obligations, by honor, or by oath of allegiance, should an opportunity arise for seizing our country, and bringing it under the authority of the United States” (pg. 210).One of the first efforts of the American planters to assume control over the monarchy resulted in the so-called Bayonet Constitution (1887). Of the king’s singing it, Queen Lili‘uokalani writes, “It may be asked, ‘Why did the king give them his signature?’ I answer without hesitation, because he had discovered traitors among his most trusted friends and knew not in whom he could trust; and because he had every assurance, short of actual demonstration, that the conspirators were ripe for revolution, and had taken measures to have him assassinated if he refused” (pg. 212). Queen Lili‘uokalani details her ascent to the throne and short reign, followed by her forced abdication. She denies the charges of American planters that it was by her choice, but writes, “For myself, I would have chosen death rather than to have signed it; but it was represented to me that by my signing this paper all the persons who had been arrested [attempting to restore the monarchy], all my people now in trouble by reason of their love and loyalty towards me, would be immediately released” (pg. 316).Judge Thomas K. Kaulukukui Jr., Judge Patrick K.S.L. Yim, and Dr. Claire L. Asam, the board of trustees of the Queen Lili‘uokalani Trust, conclude, “While it may appear to the modern reader simply as a ‘memoir’ of Hawai‘i’s last monarch, the objective of the book was not to be a bittersweet life story of a deposed monarch, but rather to build a case against the American League in Hawai‘i; to examine and expose the matter of American intervention into Hawaiian politics; and to present a plea to Americans in general, and to members of the U.S. Congress in particular, to consider the retention of Hawaiian sovereignty, rather than proceeding with the annexation of the Islands by the United States” (pg. xv). This narrative forces Americans to reexamine American imperialism and how it subverted our national principles. The annotated edition of "Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani", published by the Queen Lili‘uokalani Trust and Hui Hānai features extensive notes and photographs of the queen and those around her, further adding to this volume’s use as a primary source.

I found this book extremely interesting and well written. The story of how the Hawaiian islands became part of the United States of America should be an embarrassment to all Americans. Such as we treated the Native American Indians so we did to the Native Hawaiians.

THE DEFENCE OF DUFFER'S DRIFT has now inspired a third tale (that I'm aware of) which is included as the first half of this two-part volume. DUFFER'S DRIFT features Lieutenant N. Backsight Forethought who is left, along with his men and a scattering of equipment, to guard a key geographical location (Duffer's Drift) during the Boer War. The story is told in a series of dreams, where in each dream, he arrives on location and has to set up, prepare defenses, scout, react and hold out until relieved. He fails each time but learns a bit more and applies what he learns to each subsequent dream, until he succeeds at his task.THE DEFENSE OF JISR AL-DOREAA is a similar tale with applications on the U.S. Army's experience in Iraq. The book also mentions the second story (again, that I'm aware of) inspired by the original, THE DEFENSE OF HILL 781 by James R. McDonough, disparaging it as being no longer useful to today's Army. A mistake, I feel. The lessons of DUFFER's DRIFT can be applied to the large mechanized force scenario outlined in HILL 781 as easily as they can be applied to AL-DOREAA. McDonough's PLATOON LEADER is cited as a better work; but I'd argue that the lessons that McDonough learned that lead to the writing of Platoon Leader are seen as well in Hill 781.This is an excellent pairing of the old and the new. I'd recommend this, along with the two by McDonough and a third (RIFLEMAN DODD, C.S. Forester) by any officer candidate or NCO school-bound NCO as well as for any NCO or officer deploying overseas.

In 'The Defense of Jisr-Al-Doreaa' the authors - relatively junior yet experienced company-grade officers of the US Army - have sought to update the Boer War vintage The Defence of Duffer's Drift to reflect modern military operations. While the modern version doesn't quite match the wit and flair of the original (which is included as an annex), this is a quick and easy read that closely follows the format of the original and imparts useful lessons/reminders for junior readers ranging from fundamental leader responsibilities to basic COIN conduct. This modern day 'Duffers Drift' has considerable potential as a training tool and catalyst for professional discussion for junior leaders, and will be of potential interest to any laymen interested in the theoretical and broad responsibilities of a junior officer in a COIN or security operation.

Ordered this book not knowing much about it other than it was COIN based. Finishing up my bachelor's degree and considering a masters in International Relations, my focus has been on COIN. This book, while not as in depth as Kilcullen's "Counterinsurgency" or "The Accidental Guerrilla" it illustrates examples of principles of COIN without being overtly analytical. Its a good read, a quick read, I finished this book in between reading Weber for school. If you'd like illustrative examples of small dilemma's in COIN and the realities faced for on the ground small unit commanders of COIN in Iraq this would be a good place to start. If you're a small unit commander, this would also be a good read, as our conflicts have tended to be more COIN related than anything else in the last 5 decades.

As a civilian with a less than firm grasp on the realities and practical aspects of warfare I found this book fascinating and informative. The historical perspective of the Boer War appendix shows both that not much has changed in 100 years....and a lot has changed. The authors give a quick glimpse into the professionalism and skills....and the incredible and varied demands made on our young officers. And you can read it in a couple of hours....and you will. Couple this with Kilcullen, John Nagl, Dexter Filkins and Bill Murphy's "In A Time of War" and you will have a small sense of the heroism, skill and intelligence, tragedy and hope that surround our modern serving soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.

Real good update of the classic Duffer's Drift. I bought my first copy for a cadet at West Point and will buy another for my cousin who's a brand new Scout in the Cav.

Bought this for preparation in pursuing a career as a military officer. The modern retelling of The Defense of Duffer's Drift really opened my eyes to some of the problems a platoon officer faces in warfare, especially in current conflicts. I learned a great deal from this book, some of which might save not only my life, but perhaps the lives of men that may be under my command. If you are serious about becoming a military officer, especially one geared towards an infantry role, give this book a read, or several reads!

The Author has done a sound job of adapting the orginal to a modern (though not necessarily different) conflict. The author covers off on considerations for operating within an asymmetric environment and presents it in a style that is easy to understand. As an Army Officer I would recommend this book to any young LT/NCO about to deploy to Afghanistan or similar theatre.

An EXCELLENT update to the "Drift" as well as adaptation of tactical principles/lessons to an urban environmment.

#474,137 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am from a reformed Baptist / Presbyterian Protestant background and have only recently discovered (with delight) the Evangelical Anglican Church in North America.Anyhow, one of our small church groups read Christian classics, not to accept them uncritically, but rather to relearn, or become reacquainted with practices of Christians, centuries earlier, with the goal of living today, as Christians who "matter" and make a difference. We are looking at the disciplines, particularly prayer, dedicated "missionary teams", and practices that are "lost" today like fasting, having times of silence, and so on. There is a lot to think about. We feel free to agree with some ideas, like humility, times of silence, eating less, praying deliberately, submitting to authority. The kindle version is easy to read.I struggle with the VOLUNTARY ? "socialist" ? idea of owning nothing, communal ownership; That one is a bit tough and a challenge for an independent minded American ! I do not find it, an unbiblical idea. Those who submit to such "rules" will experience a voluntary, civilian - religious, version of military authority, and real discipline, not totally unattractive. We decided we would not beat with sticks, or belts, laggards, lazy ones, and persons slow to obey Christ in our own community.A very profitable book, if read in the right spirit, particularly for serious Christians, Christian leaders, and those who seek WORTHY Christian leadership. The book is a great starting point.

This is a review of the Kindle edition of this translation of The Rule of St. Benedict. I have read the entire book on paper a few years ago, but by writing and teaching about religion, I find this is one book I must come back to frequently. It is not the first writing on organized monasticism. Monasticism grew up in the eastern and southern deserts very early, and St. Basil wrote about them close to 200 years before Benedict. But Benedict's rule puts everything in one place, and it is observed, in some form or another, by several organizations, including some which are not Catholic. Therefore, as someone who writes about religion, I must often go back to it to recall what it says, as I did yesterday when I needed to see Benedict's statement on the canonical hours. I found that quickly, because this edition has an active Table of Contents for all 73 chapters, even though some are less than a page long. I looked at some of the 99 cent editions, and I found poor organization and no active contents.Since St. Benedict's rule is so simple and easy to understand, I don't feel the need for a lot of introduction or commentary, but I liked the introduction since it gave some perspective on the consequences of monasteries, which are not evident from Benedict's rule. For example, by the 12th century, theology was done primarily by monks who were professors at that new idea called a university. But in Benedict's time, there was no such thing. Theology was written by priests and bishops.Unless you can find a dramatically superior feature (such as facing Latin text) I would go with this edition rather than one of those more expensive.

Ok

Allowed me to see into the thinking and the doing of a Saint who lived a long time ago.

While the historical context that is so lucidly described in the introduction to this translation is fascinating in itself, the rule resonates with a disciplined approach to spiritual development in a communal setting. Placed in an appropriate historical context the "rule" is remarkable for its attention to physical and spiritual detail in the structured life of a monastery. Anyone interested in monasticsm or church history will be well rewarded by reading this.

I had heard a lot of quotes from various saints, including Benedict, but this was my first attempt to read some of their writing. It was well worth it. The first part of the book gives a solid background on Benedict, his experiences and where he was coming from. It also oriented me to what the rules were about. This is an instruction book for people who took a vow that is pretty overwhelming for most people to comprehend today.St Benedict makes one really consider what is needed in life and to whom we owe what. In rule 55 he says, "Bedding shall consist of a mattress, coverlet, blanket, and pillow. The abbot will make frequent inspections of the bedding to prevent hoarding. Any infractions are subject to the severest discipline and, so that this vice of private ownership may be cut away at the roots, the abbot is to furnish all necessities: cowl, tunic, shoes, stockings, belt, knife, pen, needle, towel, and writing tablet. With these, any excuse for need will be vanquished. (hmmm, I wonder how many motorcycles I really need?)I was really starting to get into the whole thing and feeling the humility St. Benedict calls for until I got to the part about the harsh treatment of the youngest members of the monastery. That set me back a little bit but in the end, there is a lot to learn here about one's self, one's God, and the need to find a simpler life of faith and humility.

I like the book.

Excellent.

Ghost Wall has subtlety, wit, and the force of a rock to the head: an instant classic.” ―Emma Donoghue, author of Room“A compact, riveting book.”―Alyson Hagy, The New York Times Book Review"[Ghost Wall] compresses large and urgent themes―the dangers of nostalgic nationalism, the abuse of women and children, what is lost and gained when humans stop living in thrall to the natural world―into a short, sharp tale of suspense. The way Moss conjures up the dark magic and vestigial landscapes of ancient Britain reminded me a little of the horror movie The Wicker Man . . . The novel’s feminism, though, felt utterly contemporary . . . I read Ghost Wall in one gulp in the middle of the night."―Margaret Talbot, The New Yorker“A master class in compressing an unbearable sense of dread into a book that can be read in a single horrified (and admiring) hour . . . Ghost Wall is perhaps the finest novel so far to come out of the British literary response to these uneasy times.” ―Sarah Perry, The Wall Street Journal"Sarah Moss possesses the rare light touch when it comes to melding the uncanny with social commentary . . . Ghost Wall is such a weird and distinctive story: It could be labeled a supernatural tale, a coming-of-age chronicle, even a timely meditation on the various meanings of walls themselves. All this, packed into a beautifully written story of 130 pages. No wonder I read it twice within one week."―Maureen Corrigan, NPR"Moss’ myth-like Ghost Wall isn’t merely a timely topical novel, but rather a timeless work of art."―Randy Rosenthal, The Minneapolis Star Tribune“Tense, poetic, and compelling.” ―Mike Doherty, The Toronto Star“The fear produced by this fine-honed, piercing novel springs not from the superstitious customs of prehistory but from the more intimate horrors of human nature.” ―Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal"A fascinating, horrifying look into the way in which . . . fixation on the past threatens our present and our future . . . Moss skillfully builds an atmosphere of menace and peril, making it so that I both dreaded and couldn’t wait to turn every page, simultaneously afraid and compelled by what strange, inevitable violence lay ahead . . . Spend an afternoon reading this marvel of a book, and then spend the next few weeks thinking about nothing else."―Kristin Iversen, Nylon“The story is exquisitely written; the characters are perfectly drawn and pop off the page . . . A triumph.”―Leah Schnelback, Tor.com"Remarkable, inventive . . . Sarah Moss unpacks the toxic patriarchy all without leaving the confines of a teenage girl's two-week trip to the remote northern edges of England." ―Elena Nicolaou, Refinery29“I love this book. Ghost Wall requires you to put your life on hold while you finish it. It draws you into its unusual world and, with quiet power and menace, keeps you there until the very last page. Silvie's story isn't one you will ever forget.” ―Maggie O’Farrell, author of I Am, I Am, I Am and The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox“This book ratcheted the breath out of me so skillfully that as soon as I’d finished, the only thing I wanted was to read it again.” ―Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist“A perfectly calibrated consciousness that is energetic and lonely and prone to sharp and memorable observations . . . This is a haunting, astonishing novel.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review“Thought provoking on multiple levels, with insights into primitive and modern societies, and coming of age in the face of family violence.” ―Library Journal, starred review"With stark and haunting prose that perfectly captures the harshness of the conditions the group is re-creating, Ghost Wall explores what the past can teach us about the present and what the present can teach us about the past--especially when the two are not as far removed as we may like to believe."―Kerry McHugh, Shelf Awareness“A novel as tightly woven as the baskets its heroine plaits, Ghost Wall is a startling and bloody blade of a book. A teenage girl, her parents, and a group of students agree to reenact life in Iron Age England over the course of a holiday, and slide into sacrifice. Elements of The Secret History combine with The Witch, plus bog bodies, patriarchal and class violence―it’s a slender, scathing fable for today, made of the ingredients of the past thousand years.” ―Maria Dahvana Headley, author of The Mere Wife“Ghost Wall grabs you by the guts and never lets go. Dazzling." ―Elizabeth Day, author of The Party“A thorny, thoroughly original novel about human beings' capacity for violence.” ―Kirkus“Tackling issues such as misogyny and class divides, Moss packs a lot into her brief but powerful narrative.” ―Booklist“A short, sharp shock of a book that closes around you like a vice as you read it . . . From the terse, dismaying little prologue, in which an iron age girl is marched out and murdered before an audience of neighbours and family, to the hair-raising, heart-stopping denouement, it hurtles along and carries you with it, before dumping you, breathless, at the end . . . Ghost Wall is a burnished gem of a book, brief and brilliant, and with it Moss’s star is firmly in the ascendant.” ―Sarah Crown, The Guardian“The curious allure of re-enactment is cleverly explored in Moss’s short, potent novel . . . A Brexity tale to send shivers down your spine.” ―Rebecca Rose, The Financial Times"Ghost Wall . . . is further proof that [Moss is] one of our very best contemporary novelists. How she hasn’t been nominated for the Man Booker Prize continues to mystify me – and this year is no exception . . . a gripping narrative . . . It’s an intoxicating concoction; inventive, intelligent, and like no other author’s work."―Lucy Scholes, The Independent, Five-Star Review"Ghost Wall, a slim but meaty book, is like nothing I have read before; its creepy atmosphere has stayed with me all summer . . . Moss combines exquisite nature writing, original characters and a cracking thriller plot to make a wonderful literary curiosity. It deserves to pull her out of the bog of underappreciation and on to the prize podiums."―Alex O'Connell, The Times (UK)"Stunningly good, a tightly written, powerful book about archaeology and Englishness." ―Alex Preston, The Observer"Moss truthfully conveys the way teenage girls make friends . . . In just 149 pages Moss does a remarkable job at building an engaging, textured world and Silvie is a likeable heroine. You root for her ― and she might just surprise you."―Susannah Butter, Evening Standard “[Sarah Moss is] this divided country’s most urgent novelist. Her themes: the cycles of history, male absurdity, the forms female subversion may take, in irony, sickness and sacrifice. It helps that she’s absurdly topical, and that she’s funny.” ―Daniel Swift, The Spectator"Reading Ghost Wall in the context of contemporary Britain only serves to highlight the folly of wishing for the good old days . . . The book can be read as a Brexit fable, where seppuku levels of self-sacrifice are forged with lemming-like gusto . . . There is a spring-taut tension embedded in the pages . . . Moss’s brevity is admirable, her language pristine."―Sinead Gleeson, The Irish Times "Moss slowly ratchets up the tension, much as the Iron Age people they are studying used to slowly twist a length of rope around the necks of the human sacrifices they made, up on the nearby moors."―Roger Cox, The Scotsman"[Combines] the components of a thriller with a nuanced understanding of history, its fluctuating interpretations and its often traumatic effect on the present . . . Moss’s sensual writing recalls the late Helen Dunmore . . . A bold, spare study of internecine conflict."― Catherine Taylor, New Statesman"Characteristically intelligent . . . both subtle and devastating . . . Moss is the author of five acclaimed novels but in this short volume has, I believe, produced her best fiction to date."―Totally Dublin“Reading Ghost Wall is an intense experience. Its claustrophobia and fearful build up leave you feeling close to tears. It is a masterful piece of writing that cements Moss’s reputation as one of our best novelists.” ―Sian Norris, Prospect"The 'ghost wall' of the title becomes a powerful metaphor for the invisible boundaries that exist between different groups of people, not just in the past but also at the present time. Sarah Moss combines her research interests in food, place and material culture to good effect."―Lucy Whetman, Press Association/The Telegraph“A masterpiece of concision . . . Whether evoking the landscape and the natural world or charting the dynamics between her strongly drawn characters, there is precision, elegance and, yes, a dark beauty.” ―Martin Spice, Star2"Moss’s finely balanced novel combines a strong sense of the natural world with a growing atmosphere of menace, interspersed with wry humour." ―Anthony Gardner, The Mail on Sunday“Certain to give you the chills and the creeps . . . Ghost Wall addresses issues of gender and class, British identity and borders, in 160 pages.” – Sana Goyal, LiveMint“Moss is the author of several unsettling and intelligent novels about women constrained by historical circumstance, and this, narrated beautifully by a teenage girl, is one of her best yet.” ―Metro"Sarah Moss is fascinated by bodies and isolation, and by bodies in isolation . . . Here, [she] is again drawn to an adolescent female body . . . Moss appears to collapse layers of history, to render skin and knife and rope identical across millennia. What provokes and perpetuates that capacity for harm, and what powers a mystical belief in its propitiatory value, remains eerily unclear, but no less urgent a concern for us than for our ghostly forebears."―Alex Clark, The Observer “Is Sarah Moss the best British writer never nominated for the Booker? . . . as brief and unsettling as a bolt of lightning . . . [Ghost Wall] pins us to the page with creeping menace.” ―Anthony Cummins, Daily Mail“Exquisite . . . the book works subcutaneously, building towards an ending that is all the more horrifying for its unexpectedness . . . an important novel that wears its timeliness lightly.” ―Financial Times“Unnerving . . . An intense and menacing book―the sort that’s best read in one sitting.” ―Francesca Carrington, Tatler“Sarah Moss . . . combines a poetic sensibility with great storytelling . . . Moss is brilliant on atmosphere.” ―John Boyne, Metro UK“Succinct and sublime . . . Moss depicts the connections between the people and the landscape with wonderful and lyrical precision, not a word is wasted on the page in her supple prose, and she is also expert at revealing her characters through the tiniest act or gesture. Ghost Wall is a masterclass in the ‘less is more’ style of writing, creating unbearable tension right up to the violent climax.”―Doug Johnstone, Big Issue“An unsettling novella about gender, power, and control that immerses you in its dark terror and won’t let go . . . Captivating.” ―Attitude “Writing that, along with vivid responses to the natural world and acute alertness to class, regional and sexual tensions, recalls the early fiction of DH Lawrence. It brings enriching complexity to this tale of escalating menace.” ―Peter Kamp, Sunday Times“Moss is the author of a series of unsettling, beautifully strange novels, and her latest . . . is no exception.”―Sarah Hughes, iNews, “50 Top Reads for Autumn”“Outstanding . . . The threat of unchallenged authority is brilliantly exposed . . . Grave and sophisticated, lit by flashes of wry humour, this is a drama that excavates our deepest instincts.” ―Caroline Jackson, Country Life“What I admire . . . is Moss’s ability to find an emotional connection with characters in the far distant past . . . Eerie and gripping.”―Editor’s Choice, The Bookseller

I was excited about this book when I read the synopsis pre-publication. However, the novel was quite a disappointment. Although the historical depiction of British prehistory was interesting, the plot line was not. The author seems to have it out for men. Rather than a trip back into the Stone Age, the book is pretty much of a rant against abusive men, which, as it turns out, is about every man in the book. I wouldn't waste time reading this.

A stunning book, beginning to end, truly an ageless allegory about people straining to find authority in the mistreatment of history and of their loved ones. Also a class-infused story of privilege posing as superiority, of education parading as wisdom. Beautifully rendered. The re-enactment of history as a virtuous parade of cruelty.

I was enthusiastic about ordering and reading this book. It sounded exciting and seemed to have all the elements of a good anthropological thriller. But the hype (incl an NPR interview with the author that got my initial interest) was better than the disappointing plot. Although another review here pointed out the gratuitous male-trashing throughout this story (with which I agree), MY prime objection is that the plot promised so much sacrificial debauchery in its preface, then failed to deliver much more than a petulant nature romp through the British bogs. It was as if the author - a creative writing professor no less - was afraid to allow her first-person protagonist to be seen as threatened or suffering. This novel could have been so much better (and longer and darker) but she seemed to be hiding behind her academics and not releasing her true creative potential.

Ghost Wall is a spare, elegantly written book, with disturbing themes. It build to a climax that I knew was coming, even though I hoped it wouldn't. The end is sudden, and leaves me wanting to know what happens next. There are some scenes that could be triggering for some people. Overall, a good story. I'm definitely going to look for other works by this author.

Amazing read — spare and tight and chilling — how far will a father go to pursue his vision? The book was incredible and very well done. Loved the historical bits and found the protagonist authentic and the plot compelling. A harrowing indictment of the patriarchal family structure.

Good book if you have only an afternoon and want to be taken by the hand and dragged through an exciting adventure.Very well-written, although the absence of quotation marks makes it necessary to pay attention to who is likely to be speaking.

Just wow. I can smell the bog. See the faces. The warmth of the sun in the early morning. The smell of fire and the salt air along the shore.

A surprising and compelling tale, full of archeology and the proof of man's inhumanity to man. I couldn't stop reading.

This book is very poor in helping the beginner like me. The photos are not even worth to view. Made the mistake bought this book based on other reviewers. End up bought other book by Ken Norman, a much better book with very detail instructions for the beginner.I do not recommend this book by Masao Hideyoshi.

I was a bit disappointed. I thought this would be more of a how to book; with pictures or illustrations. Sometimes I need a image to know that I am doing correctly. A reference point. This book does not have that. He does tell you what to do...but you'd have guess at whether what you did was actually correct. The title I feel is a bit misleading.

I read this book from cover to cover and found it to be easy to understand and a great guide to caring for and pruning your Bonsai. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a try at growing a Bonsai Tree. Here is a picture of my tree.

There is written a well constructed guide book to demonstrate the term bonsai, to cultivate, grow, shape and show off your bonsai tree. Though you would be able after reading this guide book to learn about its types and the whole process, recommended.

Very good book for a novice

good info. well organized.

Awesome book!!! I didn't know you could pretty much make any tree into a Bonsai tree. Super cool, great information in a tiny package.

Good book.
