Olivia's Review:Tsunami is finally going home to the kingdom of the sea. But she doesn't know what mysterious things have been happening, and Queen Coral, Tsunami's mother has had her daughters mysteriously destroyed in their eggs. Tsunami is determined to save the last surviving egg and discovers secrets even her mother didn't know of.I like the mysteries, they are very strange and can be a bit spooky at times, but also a story filled with magic and fun. I can't wait for the next book, I just finished Escaping Peril. I really want a book about Kinkajou.I think that this book is a bit scary and readers should be prepared. Also, beware of enchanted statues.Bah Bah Buuuuumm!Mom Says:Really after she leaves you with a Bah Bah Buuuuumm I am not sure what else I can say, haha.A few things...the world building for The Kingdom of The Sea is fantastic. Anytime a young reader can fully visualize the world they are reading about and get excited about it you know you have a winner. One of my favorite things about this series in fact is it's ease at pulling in reluctant readers and turning them into book-a-holics.I like that in this series each book gives us the point of view of a different Dragonet, but continues with the main original characters each fighting their own battles and working together to discover their world and find their way.As with the first book there are some moments that may be more difficult for sensitive readers, particularly one moment that involves Tsunami's father. There are not too many scary moments so don't let that keep you from getting this book, but you might have a moment where your reader needs to talk to you about what is happening. Of course if they are anything like my MG reader, they will want to talk your ear off about all these books regardless of any scary moments, these are books I find that readers just HAVE to share! This is a great book for Middle Grade readers, particularly reluctant readers. The books are both fun, with sarcastic and witty characters, they are balanced with poignant moments and battles. I do recommend that they be read in order, you will be missing out on important facts by reading them out of order. A great addition to any teachers classroom library!

Our daughters love these books, including this one. They say the writing flows very well, easy to read, great adventures and they breezed right through the series. They can't put these books down! Highly recommended. (Our daughters started reading these when they were eight; one is now nine and the other ten. They have read all of the series including the Warriors series, Wings of Fire series, Seekers series, and Survivors series). They did not like the Survivors series at all. Our daughters did not like the Survivors series because they felt that all the characters were too similar to each-other and the plot appeared to be unorganized and missed it's meaning completely, (vague, confusing plot). In addition, my daughters state that the characters in Survivors appeared to be whinny and undesirable (difficult to connect with).

Wings of Fire is an expansive Middle Grade series taking place in a violent war where dragons are being slaughtered left and right in a race to see which SandWing princess can win the war and claim the crown or take over the world. The Lost Heir is book two in this series and follows the story of Tsunami and her friends as they travel to find her parents.Tsunami is my least favorite of the dragonets after Starfight. Both of them have such know-it-all personalities that it drives me nuts. Granted, as these are children's books, the characters grow out of it, and I like the character development that Tsunami has in this book. You see the thoughts behind her actions and watch as she has to take a step back and realize just because she is a princess and is the fiercest of the dragonets doesn't mean she knows everything or is equip to take on every problem by her methods. This is proven in the very beginning of the book where the dragonets are hiding from a SkyWing patrol and Tsunami nearly kills one of the SkyWings because she reacts to his yawning as a threat (she didn't see the yawn as he was facing away from her). This causes a rift between her and the others, but this is what allows her to grow and understand she needs to watch a bit before she acts.I love how the dragons are developed through this book. You get a great picture of how kind, stern, and somewhat egotistical Queen Coral is. Blister is absolutely terrifying and needs to die because she's too smart for her own good. The descriptions of the SeaWing palaces are super well done and easy to visual the richness of the world we live in. Animus dragons are introduced in this book as well (they were mentioned in book one), and their powers are both amazing and terrifying. Animus dragons have a mixture of telepathy, telekinesis, and the ability to enchant objects. The magic is explained to be hereditary but no one knows where it came from.All-in-all, this was a great sequel to the first book and did a wonderful job developing the world in a subtle way. Sending the drgaonets off to find their families allows Tui Sutherland to develop each character individually as well as the world around them and increase the conflict in the story as they meet people who wish to kill, use, or imprison them.

At first, I was mildly disappointed that the POV changed from Clay to Tsunami, but soon got used to it.The book was great otherwise, though for some reason I felt like Riptide was slightly annoying; I kind of think he was just added in to add a romance for Tsunami. I found the plot twist at the end unexpected and interesting, however, and throughout the book I found myself wondering what was going to happen next. All in all, a thrilling book that keeps you reading.

This is an intriguing series for young readers. It's creative, cohesive and very unique. I bought this set of books as a gift (I found the price was better buying each individually rather than as a set). The reader was so delighted that I even pre-ordered the newest book. Please click "helpful" if you liked this review. :)

This was one of the best Christian Suspense book that I have read in a very long time. Therese's book "Frozen Footprints" literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I did not want to put the book down. I actually read "After The Thaw" book by Therese first because It did show to be book no. two, so I read it first. After reading book two I looked on Amazon for other books by this author. I found that "Frozen Footprints" was book one. Even though I knew basically what happened with Charlene, Mac, and Clay I wanted to know the details of how it all started. The author goes into a lot of details some of which were pretty gruesome, but who doesn't like a great suspenseful book. I was not disappointed. That is all I will say. Read the books you will not be disappointed, but read them in order. ENJOY, I know I did.

I ordered "Frozen Footprints" on Amazon Kindle and was hooked from the first page. The novel more than lives up to its billing as a suspense novel.Charlene Perigard, and her brother, Maxwell, are eighteen-year-old twins and the grandchildren of an incredibly wealthy oil-baron. While their luxurious life-style shields them from all forms of material want, it comes at a terrible price: submitting to every demand of their power-hungry, over-controlling grandfather. That all changes when Max, the more rebellious twin, disappears. Charlene discovers that the grandfather received a ransom note threatening Max's life if the ransom is not paid. The self-absorbed grandfather has convinced himself that it's nothing more than elaborate scheme by Max to swindle a large sum of cash from him--and thereby gain his independence. And the grandfather will surrender neither his money nor his control over the twins. In desperation, Charlene decides to search for her brother on her own--and thereby launches a series of events that put both her and her brother in ever-increasing mortal danger. The suspense ratchets up page by page until it becomes so achingly taut that you wonder if either the reader or the characters can stand much more. There's not a dull moment as the action, the physical and emotional pain, and soul-searching moral challenges steadily increase. Just when the suspense is stretched to the breaking point, the author springs upon the reader an ending that is both surprising and satisfying. As an author of suspense, Ms. Heckenkamp does an admirable job of hooking the reader early and steadily reeling him in. But the novel succeeds on many other levels as well. The characters are very human and very believable: with their own faults, strenghts, beliefs, and justifications. Both Max and Charlene come across well as rather privileged, protected young people who--up 'til now--have never had to face material want, physical hardships, or serious challenges to their here-to-fore nominal beliefs. The grandfather, on the other hand, comes across as a modern pharisee who has all the outward trappings of religious faith and material success--but no heart. And the antagonist, ah the antagonist, is a wonderful piece of fictional work: a formerly religious man who has justified his warped vision of the world when he didn't get what he wanted. All the characters are complex and yet believable. In summary: "Frozen Footprints" is a fast-paced, entertaining read that presents a good moral message without every getting preachy. I highly recommend it!

This is my first time to read a book by Therese Heckenkamp. I love Christian fiction and have been looking for new authors with great stories. But also ones that include our failures, our frailness, our questions, and most importantly; our journey to finding God in the story. Which helps us to find God in our own stories. Although I am not of the Catholic faith, I am most definitely a person of faith. The story was suspenseful, gripping, heartbreaking. I love how she wove so much of all we struggle with in Charlene, Max, Clay, and even grandfather Perigard. I am eager to read the next book, and she is definitely on my list now of Christian fiction authors. Keep writing and touching hearts.

AWESOME! I am an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher. Each day I give some sort of book talk to try to peak the interest of the students I teach. Frozen Footprints has made it to the top of my book talk list! I have been searching and searching for great authors and have found them in short supply. Books for adolescents are being cranked out by the hundreds, but I have yet to find more than half a dozen authors with real substance and style and integrity. Therese Heckencamp is an author that I can recommend to my students without feeling that I have put the child's soul in mortal danger. Thank you Therese! Please keep writing, I can use your text as a mentor text for my students with a confidence that I am helping them with their composition, style and most importantly their content.

I have a busy schedule plus spend a lot of time on the computer (Facebook). I read Frozen Footprints in one day because, well, it is that kind of book. You have to read to see what happens. To be honest - I forgot that this was a Christian book as I get so many of them from Amazon. I realized that the book really included a lot about religion AND faith (which is way more important than any organized religion to me). The book shows you the good in people (Charlene was a good person and had a lot of good faith in people even her grandfather who didn't deserve any faith in my opinion) and it had the obvious bad people (Abner - evil incarnate) and the greedy (grandfather places money above love and family) and then the people in the middle (Clay - not evil but not good) - The story just went at a fast pace and you cried and were horrified at things that happen to the twins. To be honest - I thought the most horrendous act was what the grandfather did when the twins decided to speak up for Clay. I was a little let down that the ending did not tell you exactly what happened - but I think it is to let us deduce our own conclusion of the outcome of the trial.I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a very good mystery book that displays the real evil that exists in this world. Both the evil you can go to prison for (Abner) and the evil that exists and not much you can do except walk away (Grandpa).

I have been a fan of the works of Matthew Kelly since I first read one of his books late in 2015. Since that time, I have read a book by him a total of 18 times. I have been bouncing around his different titles randomly pickling what to read next. This book is his most recent publication, at the time of writing this review. This book has a densely packed 15 chapters:1. Life Is A Puzzle2. Your Happiness Project3. The False Promises And Lies Of This World4. I've Been Lying To Myself5. So Many Lies About Christianity6. The Biggest Lie7. Prove It!8. One Beautiful Truth9. The World Needs Changing10. It's Been Done Before11. History Is Presenting Christianity With A New Opportunity12. Everyday Miracles13. Live An Intriguing Life14. Our Dirty Little Secret15. Now Is Your Time! After the last book I reviewed by Matthew Kelly a reader reached out to me and asked if Kelly was just a Catholic version of Max Lucado. I thought about that for a while, when I was involved with non-denomination campus ministries I read a lot of Lucado. Eventually I stopped because it all felt the same. It came to feel like Lucado just continued to present variations on a theme without having much real new content. And I feel the same way about Mark Batterson. But with Matthew Kelly I have not felt that at all yet. Yes Kelly writes with a great deal of passion, and he does sometimes use the same illustrations. And his catch phrase: 'Becoming the best version of yourself' appears often in his writings. But even with all of that with each new book by Kelly that I read I have a renewed interest in reading more of his works. Every time I finish one I go and pick one I have not read and add it to my to be read pile.In this book Kelly states:"Transforming people one at a time is at the heart of God's plan for the world. Itis also essential to developing dynamic marriages, loving families, vibrant Christian communities, thriving businesses and economies, and extraordinary schools and nations. If you get the man right (or the woman, of course), you get the world right.""The thing is, our deep yearning isn't for momentary pleasures; it is for lastinghappiness in a changing world. The world is always changing; we cannot control every situation. Situational happiness is easy. It is easy to be happy lying on an exotic tropical beach all day for a week. But so much of this happiness is dependent on the situation. What we are really hungry for is a happiness that is independent of the situation."Matthew also shares with us form his personal experience. He states:"Through my own quest for happiness, there are a few things Ihave learned: Happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. Getting what I want doesn't make me happy. Focusing on myself almost never leads to happiness. I am never happy when I pretend to be someone I am not. Too much of the happiness I experience is dependent on unsustainable circumstances or situations. The more I help others in their quest for lasting happiness, the happier I seem to be. Lying never makes me happy. Happiness is always found by embracing the present moment. It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. Anything that helps me become a-better-version-of-myself makes me happy, even if it is difficult or painful. Happiness is contagious."And he shows us that the way we find true happiness is by pursuing answers to four questions."Who am I?What am I here for? What matters most? What matters least?"He also shares with us that:"It is this fact-that we lie to ourselves-that is of particular importancehere. Humanity's ability to deceive itself knows no limits."Or"Whenever and wherever Christians have taken the idea that holiness is possible seriously, Christianity has thrived. Whenever and wherever the biggest lie in the history of Christianity has prevailed and everyday holiness has been set aside, Christianity has fumbled along clumsily with limited impact or become stagnant.""I don't like alarm clocks. Just the name disturbs me. Who wants to start the day alarmed? But when you check into a hotel, they often ask you if you would like a wakeup call. I like that. We all need a wakeup call from time to time. I needed one last year. Maybe you need one right now. It is just so easy to fall into the mode of sleepwalking through life."I hope that those few quotes will help you appreciate some of the message that is in this wonderful book. Of all the books I have read by Kelly this is the best so far. I highly recommend it.

We all struggle with being the best version of our selves, we allow ourselves to put off what we should be doing, this book give some direction on how to get started.

I started reading this, then put it down when life got busy. I was hit with a minor illness that really had me feeling low. Looking for something to read, I grabbed this book again. I was just coming into the chapter of Transformation and I was hit....this is exactly what I need. I need to open myself to God and find out why I am here, and what is my purpose. I am so ready to make more Holy Moments! I am inspired!

It was an easy read and made you think about really being catholic. I have been catholic all my life but this re-energized me about my faith

Wow, what a simple but necessary solution to the problems of our time which is actually timeless. Learn how live the life you were meant to live as only each of us can do!

I am involved in Christian and Catholic apologetics. I write and read a lot. Matthew Kelly's The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity" was given out to parishioners at the two parishes our family attends. The book is lauded as a great tool of evangelism. I read it. But I found it very shallow and insipid in its thinking. Catholics can do much better than read this if they want to be better prepared to engage the culture, witness for Christ, and better their lives.Consider these few points.(1) The Biggest Lie... unlike most Catholic texts this book has no citations, outside references, footnotes, nor is there a bibliography. Ex. He quotes Keats, but no citation. Only one Scripture is cited: 1 Thes. 4:3. Thus, contrary to what I was told by a priest, there is no clear presentation of the Gospel in this book. But rather a feel-good, nearly post-modern version of the Gospel IS suggested. (See No. 3 below.)(2) In rebutting the historic lies about Christianity, The Biggest Lie... provides few if any facts that can be tracked down and checked out. But Kelly offers plenty of opinion. Ex. "#1 Jesus Didn't Exist" (p 22), Kelly provides not one piece of evidence that Jesus did exist. But he provides 7 claims that Christ didn't, and offers 6 of his own unsubstantiated opinions, demeaning his detractors by calling them "disingenuous" or liars. Matthew, name calling is not evidence.(3) If there's a practical theme to the book it's to create Holy Moments by being kind to others. This is where 1 Thes. 4:3 comes in, "...be holy." Good starting point, but Kelly interprets this, which by other names is a repeat of past secular social fads a.k.a. "random acts of kindness" and "pay it forward" which the secular culture practices to a great extent. Kelly seems to think such Holy Moments are unique to Christians and the world will sit up and take notice. He's wrong. He's also wrong the holiness is arrived at by being kind to others...although being kind is a good thing. Further, he provides no advice on how to use Holy Moments to confront cultural issues like abortion, sexualization, gender politics or the ever-present sex scandal in the Church. He ignores these issues totally. Thus, the book is very shallow.(4) He spends time talking about giving 100% of our lives to Christ, but the thinking here is nothing more than a bottle of bromides. Platitudes with no practical interpretation. EX: If I give my 100% to Christ how do I have anything left for my wife, job, or kids? Now there's a clear answer to that, in that we are Christ in our interaction with our wife, job and kids...but Kelly doesn't say that. He just piles on the adages.(5) On pages 94-95 he writes of the power that ONE individual has to change the world and gives as an example: "Had another thousand or ten thousand joined" the resistance against Hitler "they would have changed the course of history." Think about that logic. ONE person can change Hitler's attack on humanity, but 1,000 or 10,000 more are needed. What happened to the "one person" business? In claiming this over simplification Kelly appears ignorant of the tens of MILLIONS that died to stop Hitler and the Axis powers over a period of years. The logic is over simplified, generalized, and baffling.(6) On pages 109-112 Kelly gives one-line bios to over 30 of the greatest achieving people to grace humanity, from Bill Gates to Grandma Moses, listing the great things they did and the age when they did them...and he points out that these special people were "called of God". Then he follows this up by reminding the reader (in big type) "you and I—are capable of incredible things." Why does he say we don't do such things? He does not remind the reader that he said that the former were called of God, or that they worked hard all their lives and prepared for their great opportunities. No, he says it's because we're busy with the "hustle and bustle of life" as if the famous folks weren't busy with such things. "Or we think we are not among the special people and we are not capable of great things." Duh! Well, most of us are not "called of God" in a special way like Joan of Arc, nor are we as talented or as disciplined as Jack Nicklaus, or driven like Paul McCartney for fame, etc. But never mind that logic. Kelly says, "We are wrong. We are capable of great things." And then by the force of his words he reminds us that Holy Moments (Random Acts of Kindness) are equivalent to the works of Mozart and Michelangelo. One thing for sure, Matthew Kelly will never be lauded for his literature or remembered for his sharp mind.(7) In many places the proofs he provides to support his opinion are simply restatements of his position with more emphatic words. On pages 59-60 he goes on a rant about the need of Christian unity to save the Church and the world. He never gives a tactical or strategic plan for bringing about such unity other than his Holy Moments motif. And then to prove his point he writes: "And hear me when I say this: The future of Christianity around the world depends on this unity. It's no longer just a nice idea...." etc. Thus, in numerous places Kelly's best evidence in support of his opinion is the sight of his own words in print... or the sound of his voice on his videos. What more do we need? There are a number of other logical problems with this book. In short, if Catholics read this they will learn that simply repeating ideological chants ("But Matthew Kelly said...") and paying it forward with random acts of kindness will unite the church, dispense with evil, and change the culture. In the meantime, it would be great if Kelly would steer clear of the bromides and write a practical book on confronting evil.

Extremely simple concept, don't complicate it. Jesus used a child as the model for us. Quick and easy to read.

MaybeI like the approach but like most Christians that write as an expert the topic of evil being involved is taboo. Jesus recognizes Satan in the desert and several ties when mentioning fires of hell. So you may bring the real Christians around but embedded evil will continue to block as much as they can. Been attending church for 75 plus years and am still trying to identify what a sin is other than those listed in the 10 commandments. Rest are “ God said to ? Or man decided another rule would bring them around. So essentially he is right we are more holy than organized religion would have us believe. I am tired of hearing how sinful we are as the writer 9 implies. Good not great show.

I bought this book, and then realized it was far beyond my cooking skills at this stage in my life. So as soon as I have finished reviewing it, it goes to my computer techie and his wife. She loves to read cookbooks but not to cook; he loves to cook. This book is not intended for the person who comes home from work exhausted and just wants somebody else to make dinner, and preferably bring it to her. She looks through her menu collection, selects the Chinese food restaurant almost by chance except for the fact that as soon as she gives them her phone number they know what her order will be, and waits with cash in hand until the food arrives. By then she is famished as well as exhausted, and if she tried to cook she would probably confuse the sugar with the salt. No, this book is intended for the dedicated cook like my techie--the person who takes infinite pains to produce something a thousand times better than what the closest takeout place would produce. He hurries home from a difficult day of work, to relax in the kitchen by making kung pao shrimp or spicy orange beef. He meticulously cuts every vegetable into identical pieces to create a work of art as well as food. By the time he calls the family to the table, his batteries are recharged and he has the energy to take the family out to a movie. He can forget about work until tomorrow morning. My daughter is one of those cooks, but she already has this book. So I will enjoy giving it as a gift to my favorite techie and his lovely wife, who is my dearest friend. I know they will both enjoy it, but for different reasons.I strongly recommend this book for anybody who has an interest in Chinese food, whether it is in reading about it or in actually doing it. It is a pleasing book to read, nicely laid out, with foods in logical order. I am too old and decrepit to use it, but that doesn't make it a bad book. If I were younger and healthier, I would keep it and learn to cook Chinese from it. But as I am, my husband would skin me if I set out on such an undertaking. No, Dan and Lana should have it, because they will use it.

Take it from me, this is the book you want to get first if you're intent on cooking Chinese food in your home. Parkinson provides a lot of helpful information and background in the beginning of the book you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Almost every recipe is something an American would love. It details which spices, vinegar, wines, sauces, etc. to buy at your ordinary grocery store. All you'll need is a wok after that (get the Lodge cast iron, it's the best and will last you a lifetime). Every menu can be adjusted to your tastes, meaning you can make them more authentic or you can further 'Americanize' them, as incorrect as that sounds. But if you're wanting food the entire family will enjoy, this is the book with which to start. THEN try others! Finally, visit [..] and watch some of the chinese cooking videos there. They will illustrate in real time many of these same menus, and there you'll see shortcuts and other tips that many recipe books take for granted, but don't bother to mention.__________________TWO CAVEATS: (1) Within many menus, you'll see a measure of an ingredient (such as p.48) followed by the word "divided." For example, it will read: "2 tsp salt, divided." But you have to read the full process instructions below the recipe to know that you only add 1/2 tsp of salt first, and then sprinkle the rest on at the end during stir fry. (2) Nowhere is a batter recipe defined. You're told to deep fry chicken, etc., in batter first, but no batter ingredients are listed throughout. (I presume it's left up to personal choice.)

Formatting: I can give it about a 3.7 here. Its kind of broken up and it can be hard to tell when a key note is about the previous recipe or the following one. The main reason to knock one star is there is no table of contents. The remedy is simple in this case. Simply go and bookmark the main headings for each area. On the next page after you will find hyper-linked entries for the entire section. It takes less than 3 minutes (also a one-time effort) and it works fine for me and thus isn't a total SNAFU. Content: I wouldn't call this a hardcore Chinese food cookbook. As other reviewers have stated, this is the kind of fare you might find at a local Americanized Chinese food joint. That's what I wanted so the content gets 5 stars. Overall Value: I give it a 4.4 stars for the current price and a solid 5 for anyone who just wants a primer on ingredients and combinations that are typical plus cooking methods with a wok.

This is my favorite Chinese cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and give restaurant worthy results. I would like more pictures but otherwise, it's a great cookbook to have on hand. I borrowed it for several months on my Kindle but finally broke down when it was on sale and purchased the print version to have on hand in the kitchen. Easy to understand and use.My favorite recipes are the Hot and Sour soup (p. 55) and Spicy Chicken with Cashews (p. 163). The author gives a nice detail for Velvet Chicken which really help tenderize chicken. The dipping sauce recipes are also varied and delicious.

Don't let its inexpensive pricetag fool you; this is a truly wonderful, easy, and tasty cookbook! I have many Asian cookbooks, but this one has become my "go-to" favorite; it has easy instructions for beginning to intermediate books, ingredients that are (for the most part) available in your supermarket, and restaurant favorites as well as little-known delicacies. It contains no pics or graphics to run up the price tag; you already know what these dishes look like. The recipes are easily adapted to your family's taste preferences; you can add or delete ingredients as you please without picturing an ancient Chinese sage standing behind you with a cleaver. This is Chinese cooking as you like it - well done, author and publisher! Highly recommended.

A People's History of Heaven, by Mathangi Subramanian

Review

“Subramanian writes with empathy and exuberance, offering a much-needed glimpse into a world that too many of us don't even know exists. This is a book to give your little sister, your mother, your best friend, yourself, so together you can celebrate the strength of women and girls, the tenacity it takes to survive in a world that would rather have you disappear.”—Nylon “The power of these fierce young women shines in spite of their circumstances, and they prove just how beautiful and influential a strong, unconditionally accepting community is. Subramanian is a remarkable writer whose vibrant words carry a lot of heart. This inspiring novel is sure to draw in readers with its lyrical prose and endearing characters.” —Booklist “A vibrant novel . . . a beautiful story of love, loyalty, and female friendship.” —HelloGiggles “Spending time with this fearsome five is . . .  just plain fun. Slum life is never romanticized. The narrator, an unnamed member of the girls’ inner circle, delivers enough cynical wisdom and pithy commentary to show just how wise these girls are to their plight without dismissing how insidious cultural messages are. What crystalizes is the sure knowledge that none of them are powerless . . . A People’s History of Heaven forefronts human dignity and the intelligence it takes to survive at the intersection of so much society uses to set people apart, while also making it clear that, ‘in Heaven, anger is not about any one person. It’s about the whole world.’” —Foreword Reviews “How can a novel about a group of daughters and mothers on the verge of losing their homes in a Bangalore slum be one of the most joyful and exuberant books I’ve read? Subramanian writes without a shred of didacticism or pity, skillfully upending expectations and fiercely illuminating her characters’ strength, intelligence, and passionate empathy. A People’s History of Heaven should be a case study in how to write political fiction. Each page delighted and amazed me.” —Heather Abel, author of The Optimistic Decade “Wonderful . . . The stories of these young women . . . are full of emotion and drama, and also fierce power and hope. Their relationships and support for one another is inspiring, making this a beautiful testament to friendship and individuality. More LGBTQ+ novels about people of color, please!” —BookRiot “It has the heart-on-its-sleeve melodrama of some of the most successful teen novels and films, though it will likely also appeal to adults wanting to tuck in to a novel which is like the brainy big sister of a Lifetime movie. A girl power-fueled story that examines some dark social issues with a light . . . touch.” —Kirkus Reviews “Poetic . . . Subramanian's rich imagery conjures up the bustle of a diverse city where children live in poverty mere blocks from three-story homes where their mothers work as maids. With its heroic young cast, A People's History of Heaven has huge YA crossover potential, and its social commentary makes it a wonderful book club selection. As colorful as a Rangoli design, this bittersweet coming-of-age story will linger in the reader's mind.” —Shelf Awareness “What a thrill to read a novel as daring and urgent as A People’s History of Heaven. It’s a story about defiance in the face of erasure, about the survival tactics of an unforgettable group of girls. I can’t remember the last time I encountered a voice of such moral ferocity and compassion.”  —Tania James, author of The Tusk That Did the Damage “Everything about A People’s History of Heaven is wonderful: the lyrical, light touch of the narrator, the story, the humor, and most of all, the girls. This novel—as shiny and crinkly and heartbreaking as ‘cellophane the color of false promises’—overflows with girls I want to meet, befriend, celebrate, and shelter from the ills of their world. But they don't need me to do that! Faced with bigotry and bulldozers, these girls know exactly what to do: stick together and help each other learn, love, see, fight. These are girls who ache, girls who build, girls who claim or escape girl-ness. Read about Banu, Deepa, Joy, Rukshana, Padma, and Leela: These are girls who save the world.”—Minal Hajratwala, award-winning author of Leaving India

4.5 StarsHeaven is a slum in Bangalore, named for the Sanskrit word left on a broken sign, the word for heaven, and it is where the stories of these families take place. There are eighteen people of note in this story, but the primary focus is on five girls on the verge of womanhood who attend the local government school.Banu is an artist, her grandmother, her ajii, one of the original residents of Heaven; Deepa, who is visually impaired, is a dancer who doesn’t attend the school with the other girls; Joy is the youngest in the family with three older brothers, is transgender, identifying as a girl; Rukshana, who struggles with her sexuality, especially as a Muslim, and how she fits in; and Padma, who bears a lot of weight as the only member of her family who is educated, and therefore takes on adult responsibilities. These five girls are naturally accepting, and protective of each other, in such a way to tighten their bond even more. When their homes in Heaven are threatened by demolition with bulldozers, they choose to fight back rather than accept defeat.I didn’t know, going into this book, that this author, Mathangi Subramanian, has written other books, although this is her debut novel for adults. There is a smooth, effortless flow to her writing that I wasn’t expecting. Given the setting and what little I knew of this story, I was pleasantly surprised by the many moments of loveliness, and ultimately I found this to be an uplifting story. It is not without some moments of sadness, and it does tackle some of the issues that face women, particularly Indian women, but in any area that fosters some of the issues facing these women. With such beautiful, lyrical writing, and such a spellbinding story, I did not want to put this book down. Many thanks for the ARC provided by Algonquin Books

I struggled to get into this book a bit but once I did I found it to be a very moving story about the bonds of friendship between 5 teenage girls, each with very unique struggles and backgrounds. The crisis of the book is the slum where they live being torn down and their fight to save it but the heart of the story is each persons story and the way that society has played a role in that. The story definitely sheds light on the struggles of woman, and particularly poor women, in Indian society but it also shows us the heart and love of these people despite the struggles they face. Overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing what this author does next.

I so enjoy when a story drags me to where they want me to be as these five fearsome girls sneak their way into your heart. Raised in a Bangalore slum, each character gets to provide their backstory that centers around lives defined around by femaleness and class structure as they fight for their future, adventures, and just to be. The unnamed first person plural narrative voice showcases the ingenuity and solidarity of the characters in the unconditional acceptance of each other and each just want to live their best life. This lithe tale while explore our humanity is as profound as it is entertaining.Female power shines brightly.

What a beautiful book!. “Heaven” is a story of friendship, love, and the many, many ways in which girl-women make the choices that will form their lives and the lives of those they love. “Heaven” is a slum in Bangalore where the continual threat of destruction has always hung over the lives of these girls and their mothers and aunties.Mathangi Subramanian is a writer to watch. This young woman has an elegant voice; and it will be so exciting to listen to it develop.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This story of five young women living in a slum in Bangalore defies description. In lesser hands, the setting and the circumstances could have overwhelmed what is really a very heartfelt story of women supporting one another. I found this beautifully written and quite moving. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. Recommend to those interested in expanding their horizons.

In “A People’s History of Heaven” we learn about life in an Indian slum through the individual stories of the girls and their female kin who live there. There were many parts in this book where I wanted to celebrate the triumphs of the girls as they found ways to prioritize their educations and express themselves in art and friendship. I did have some difficulty with the narrative structure of the book- it felt a bit disjointed and that made it hard for me to connect to the stories completely. Thank you to Algonquin and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.,

Heaven is a collection of shacks and huts in the windswept outskirts of Bangalore. The poorest families live here. Yet, the girls and women in this novel are rich in friendship, understanding, and shared history. The story revolves around the experiences of a group of teen-age girls who have been friends almost from birth and who possess very different characteristics. They learn from each other, their mothers, grandmothers, and the elder schoolmaster. They accept each other - blind, transgender, lesbian - and take pride in supporting, protecting, and challenging each other. They hope and dream of finishing school, attending university, improving their living conditions, having careers, and changing the world so females have the same opportunities as males. They learn secrets. They are young women in a world that casts them as possessions, first of their father, then of their husband. Amongst all of these adversities they work to make Heaven a better place, and in the process show that they are more than just possessions; they are strong, intelligent, forward thinkers who use those attributes to face the seemingly more powerful and win. This book demonstrates the continued need for International Women's Day.
