When it comes to journals, I thought I’d seen it all: Mindfulness journals. Journals for book lovers to track their reading progress. Gratitude journals. Journals with prompts. Collage journals. Journals shaped like ice cream sandwiches. Enter: journals for the preschool set.Even though, at thirty-eight, I’m well past the target audience, I decided to give Me: A Compendium a try. After all, I love unconventional journals, journals with a heavy graphic element that don’t require so much writing (because who has the time? And also the handwriting skills? Mine jumped the shark shortly after college graduation.) And if it wasn’t for me, I could always give it away.As it turns out, when the publisher says that it’s intended for preschool through third grade, they are not kidding. And that’s a good thing!With its simple style; bold, bright colors; blocky artwork; and age-appropriate prompts/activities, this is a journal that’s both fun and very do-able for younger kids. The layouts are silly yet engaging, with plenty of space to write, draw, or even paste on your response. The paper is nice and thick, which is great for less than perfectly coordinated hands.The prompts run the gamut, from “If I were an underwater sea creature, this is what I would be” to “My favorite holiday” and “These are my top three ice cream flavors.”Okay, on second thought, maybe this book is just my speed.There are even some goodies hidden under the dust jacket, including a blank cover for the journaler to personalize herself.This would make a great gift for a creative or introspective kid, especially one who loves assisting with mom or dad’s scrapbooking (but maybe can’t be trusted with the glue and glitter quite yet!).** Full disclosure: I received a free book for review through Blogging for Books. **

This little journal by Wee Society is quite fun and unique. It is ideal for artistic, creative, and/or right brain dominant children and is described as "a fill-in journal for kids." I think it could be beneficial for older children and even adults with developmental delays or handicaps as well. The print on the inside is all very large and should be appropriate for anyone with about a second-grade reading level or higher. The bold colors and imaginative prompts are sure to appeal to a wide variety of personalities.Some of the pages encourage the reader to draw or sketch, but never in a way that should cause them to feel their artistic ability is lacking. For example, one page says, "If I could have any pet, it would be a ___________ ." There is a picture of a leash leading to a collar where the person can draw an animal in. Another drawing prompt page says, "This is my favorite thing to do inside" with a picture of a blank house to draw in. The page opposite says, "This is my favorite thing to do outside" with a place to draw. So, none of the pages ask the reader to copy a drawing, finish the other half of a drawing, etc. Other pages are writing prompts, such as, "When my family is together, we like to" followed by a picture of lined notebook paper with large writing space for completing the thought. There are prompts asking what you'd name a band, what you wish was in your refrigerator, and what you would pack if you were going to outer space.There is a good variety of prompts, some more reflective, some about favorite things, some about dreams. I appreciated a prompt which asked what awards I would like to give someone as this could stir kids to think of good characteristics they see in those around them or good deeds they've witnessed. The dust jacket is removable and has more opportunities to journal inside of it. I think this is a practical choice since dust jackets don't always survive long when books are frequented by young kids and the actual hardcover underneath is fully colored and offers an opportunity for doodling and personalization.I think kids could enjoy this, handicapped or developmentally delayed individuals could benefit from its approach, and it would make a great gift item. Once it is filled out, it will be a fun piece of memorabilia for someone who may not have take the time to do a traditional journal, scrapbook, or photo album. This could even be incorporated into a young student's homeschool day before they are prepared for traditional writing prompts. It would surely be a highlight! My fourth grader snatched this and read through the whole thing, eagerly asking if he could complete it.In the interest of full-disclosure, I received a copy of this book courtesy of Blogging for Books for the purpose of reviewing. My daughters ages 5 and 7 LOVED this journal. As a mom who wants to encourage my kids to write and express their feelings, this book was a great way to get them to do just that. The only problem with the journal is that my kids completed the entire book in about two days, they enjoyed the activities so much I had to beg them to stop writing and "save some for another day." My older daughter walks around with hers, reads and refers to it and even changes, adds or draws on pages she has already completed. I LOVE the creativity, expression of ideas and self awareness that this journal fosters.

Hard bound book is nice but would be hard for a child to actually open it up to write much- mostly because of the the binding. Pages are bright with illustrations, good kid ideas to write draw about. For some reason, I thought the book was bigger- the size combined with the illustrations takes up a lot of writing room.

My son is so excited to have a "book" he can make himself even though he is not a strong writer (K-1st grade). It has simple prompts which I can read to him and then he can do the page. For example, one page said, "My 4 favorite ice cream flavors are..." and then he is to draw them on the cone pictured on the page.

Exactly what I had hoped for. Great quality book, crisp pages, easy for my first grader to read & navigate. Lots to do inside, I think she’ll really enjoy it. Would buy again or give as a gift.

I love this book! It's a hard cover book with great illustrations and lots of fun questions. This is a great book to get your kid thinking about what they truly like. This will be an amazing keepsake that I know my daughter will enjoy looking through years from now. I highly recommend this - for the price, you can't beat it!

I got two of these for my grandkids age 5 and 7. They love them. They spend hours filling in the pages. The younger one mainly uses pictures to fill in the pages, but she also asks for help spelling. This is great for provoking creativity in emerging readers and writers.

This is not a DIET book but a wonderful book for detoxing the body. I went through the whole program and loved it. I am going to turn around and do it again. My daughter-in-law saw such changes in me that she ordered the book and is half way through the program. She did not enjoy it but found she had no energy and her gallbladder started troubling her, again. So I asked her what blood type she is... She is blood type O and I am blood type A. Blood type O [like my husband] are heavy meat/beef eaters and Blood type A enjoy eating more vegetables and chicken/fish. I told her to adjust the program by adding beef. Things are better now. I would recommend this book

I have had this book for 2 weeks now and, while planned to jump in right away, have not started yet. After reading the 1st couple pages, I realized that this truly is a serious commitment for success. The list of "No Thank-yous" is extensive including gluten (bread) and sugar which are currently staples of my daily diet. Because of this, I am a bit nervous about obtaining a successful outcome. I was expecting more detailed recipes but most are smoothies. The spiritual, mental/emotional and physical aspects of the book are brilliant.

I was admittedly skeptical about whether I could make the types of health changes I needed to make to lose weight, reduce health issues and impact the health of my whole family. When I heard about this book I was curious about whether I could make a commitment to 30 days of detox from an eating perspective as well as complete the daily devotionals. Honestly I thought if I couldn't do the food part of the detox that at least the spiritual detox would do me some good. The great news is that I not only completed the daily devotionals which are very thought provoking and biblically sound - but also completed the dietary commitment! During the 30 days, I lost 10 lbs - not because I stopped eating, but because I changed what I was eating. Some of the reviews express concern about the time commitment... I am a career women working full time and was able to complete the detox - you can do it! and it is worth it!! Now - several months later - I am continuing with the changes in eating habits that helped me lose the original 10 lbs plus 2 more.Eating healthy is a choice and this book plus faith and determination makes it possible! I highly recommend it for you and your family.Update - 1 year later:A year ago, I did the The 30-Day Faith Detox and as a result changed many things about how I cook and what we eat. I have not perfectly complied post the 30 days, but I wanted to encourage folks who are trying to improve their health to look at food instead of medications. A year later, my health metrics have improved tremendously - cholesterol from 194 to 140, pre-diabetic to Normal, thyroid - reducing my medication (looking forward to eliminating it under my Dr's care of course). Im so excited to get started on The 30-Faith Detox. God's timing is perfect in bringing this into my life. Going to the grocery today so I will be able to start tomorrow. Have read the 1st three chapters so that I will know what I'm getting into. So amazing to find something that includes renewing your mind, cleanse your body and heal my spirit. I've been on every diet out there, lost a bunch of weight but never gotten to the root of my food issues. So looking forward to healing and wholeness.

This is my first time writing a review on any product, therefore this means alot to me. I thank the authors for this book. I am on Day 9 of my detox and so far I am enjoying ' most days'. Realize I get a bit cranky because I can't eat other foods that I love. I have to keep reminding myself that this process is for a good reason. I am being disciplined now which is good. I enjoy the daily devotionals, I have been learning some new things however some are reminders and reinforcement for me. There have been two challenges for me and I hope the author can provide some guidance. 1. I live in the Caribbean and some of the fruits and vegetables are not common. I always wonder if I could substitute what we have in season based on the section colors 2. I have not been fortunate to take time off from work and some days I am unable to prepare the juices. Instead I try to eat the recommended fruits instead. However juicing and eating the amount specified is totally different when you take into consideration the amount to be consumed if you're eating. Apart from that, looking forward to the days ahead. I will update my comments after I complete the 30 days.

I have every book in the Jess Williams Series and they get better with each new one issued. I love westerns - Louis L' Amour, William Johnston and now Robert Thomas! By far, I love the Jess Williams series the best. I count down the days till the next one is released. I love the way he thinks in the series - To take down the worst of the worst, to protect the innocent and to provide help where it's needed. Thank you so much for the enjoyment I get from each book published and I hope there will be many more in the future!!

The author has taken a great character in Jess Williams and turned him into a comic book persona. Shot three times in a week with 44 caliber rounds but is up and about in a couple of days??? The good doctor is shot in the stomach barley alive when she gets treatment and is up working in a week??? The stories are all alike ride into town kill a couple of men ride out on the trail get shot kill a couple men ride back to town see dr walk out get into a gunfight kill another man collect bounty leave town go after another man!!! No real story line or development of any sense of a story. He priced his books like he is a very good author but they aren’t even worth the original .99 cents they started out costing!!!! I have bought every one of the trash books hoping that the author would improve his writing ability but he actually has gotten worse with this book being at the bottom of the series!!! I will buy no more of his poor excuse for a book...

Jess Williams series will never get less than 5 stars from me. Roberts books are enjoyable and one of those books you can't put down till the end. JESS is a hero, a rich man, a kind and charitable man, and a Killer. JESS is a bounty hunter and a US Deputy Marshall. Roberts books puts you along side Jess as he goes through life. You will enjoy meeting his friends and the people he meets along the way. Fantastic reading. ENJOY.

RJT. has penned the. (JWWB. - 80) Western in the series. Wounded . Is the title of JW.'s. current work at ridding the West of the men who become killers , which range from the abnormal to the psychotic. This episode was a return to the JW. Of old. The side characters and how he interchanges with them are as important as the men killers he chases. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Chose this rating because I feel it is one of the best in the series. Even though I love the ones that Frank and the others are in, especially Shadow, this one was full of excitement. Jess never gets shot so to have him shot three of four times is unreal. Don't like seeing my Jess get hurt. Can't wait for the next book! 80 down and hopefully many more to go.

Once again Mr. Thomas has written another great Jess Williams book. Great characters and lots of action. This has been a very good series to read.Would highly recommend this series to all that enjoys a great western story.

Thurman, a highly educated lawyer who bravely trail-blazed key civil rights cases, unveils the true “religion of Jesus.” Jesus was a Jew. A poor Jew. A poor, minority Jew under the Roman Empire. Jesus stands with the disinherited because he was one of them. So what does this disinherited Jesus teach and preach? The need for a profound “inward center” transformation. Both the oppressors and the oppressed cannot allow fear, deception, or hate to define and propagandize the self over and against the other; only love must stand it their stead.Here Thurman’s summation of Jesus’ life and teachings: “You must abandon your fear of each other and fear only God. You must not indulge in any deception and dishonesty, even to save your lives. Your words must be Yea-Nay; anything else is evil. Hatred is destructive to hated and hater like. Love your enemy, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven.”[...]

This book is one of the most important books I have ever read. Essentially, it's premise can be derived from this quote:"The basic fact is that Christianity as it was born in the mind of this Jewish teacher and thinker appears as a technique of survival for the oppressed. That it became, through the intervening years, a religion of the powerful and dominant, used as an instrument of oppression, must not tempt us into believing that it was thus in the mind and life of Jesus."

Everyone who wonders why our country is still plagued with racial inequities should read this book. Everyone that longs for a higher level of civil order, everyone who wonders who Jesus was speaking to, everyone young, in-between and old should read this book. It was published in 1949 but speaks truth that never changes.

Even though written in 1949, the approach to the message of Jesus of Nazareth is as vital and applicable today in the 21st Century, as it was in the middle of the 20th Century. For those wishing to understand why some minority groups see violence erupt, and to get an insight as to what brings this about, Howard Thurman's reflection on the dynamics between those in power and those subjected to those in power is extremely 'eye-opening'! This book needs to be part of the literature of anyone seeking social justice!

My initial response to reading this book was to resist. Upon reflection, the only reason I could find to resist was the possibility that I would have to change my thinking. Once I was ready for change, I embarked upon reading Mr. Thurman's work with an open mind. This is a honest perspective of what power and dominion can destroy the morals of the privileged and break the spirit of the disinherited. It is also a testimony of what the teachings of Jesus can do to restore dignity and hope of those disinherited. I highly recommend it to the privileged to help us recognize and change the faulty and inhumane concepts that have embedded themselves in our minds, hearts, religions, and cultures.

A few quick thoughts: The book is almost 70 years old. Having said that, it is a sad commentary that the content is so contemporary. Thurman does what we want from any Bible reader, especially if one comes from the lineage of InterVarsity: Context is taken seriously, and the words of Holy Writ are not assumed to have fallen from the sky. But, it is *both* a book of serious theology and serious spirituality, one that both accounts for suffering and oppression in personal terms (fear, deception, & hatred) *and* offers a Jesus that stays true to the Gospels. There's a few slow spots in the book, as is true of all books: but, by and large, it serves the audience it was intended for: those with their backs against the wall. I'd recommend it to you.

Howard Thurman is well known as one of the 20th century's great mystics, thinkers, and spiritual leaders. "Jesus and the Disinherited" may be his best known book, and it's certainly his most influential. Martin Luther King, Jr. carried a copy with him in his travels and it grounded him as much as any book. It's certainly worth the accolades.It's a small book, and its organization is basic. Thurman begins by describing people under oppression as the people "With their backs to the wall." Most of what Christians have written about the role of the teachings of Christ in conversations about oppressed people comes from the perspective of those with power who have an obligation to help those who do not have power. Thurman affirms this approach, and compares it to the perspective of Paul, who, though a Jew and regularly persecuted for the Gospel, always had the power to assert his Roman citizenship. His was a chosen powerlessness, and he occasionally chose to use his societal power.Jesus, God Incarnate, chose to take his place among those "with their backs to the wall." Thurman believes that Jesus' life and teachings can only be understood from this vantage point. He argues that those who have never been powerless cannot fully understand what it means to have society's structures and systems turned not to their benefit and protection but to their subjugation and humiliation.Thurman describes how the life and teachings of Jesus relate to the great enemies of the soul--fear, deception, and hate. He is a master not only of the faith but also of psychology and society. The final chapter is about love, and how love between those in power and those with their backs against the wall can only be the result of relationships built on mutuality. He thinks the church is the best place for such relationships to form, and laments that congregations are so segregated and do not allow such relationships to form.Love is a miracle, and all of society makes the enemies of the soul and the possibility of the love Jesus describes incredibly difficult. One of the great wonders of the Jesus story is that he is a person with his back against the wall who was able to demonstrate the possibility of living in an oppressive situation without giving in to fear, deception, or hate. Jesus was able to love, even his enemies. This fact alone gives tremendous hope that those with their backs against the wall may actually live in such a way. Thurman certainly did.Howard Thurman wrote in the midst of the Civil Rights struggle, and he talks about his conversations with a grandmother who had spent her childhood in slavery. People like me, who take our freedom and privilege for granted, should read the book, if for no other reason, to get a sense of the interior struggles others face.Our world is full of fear, deception, and hate. The kind of love Jesus demonstrates and Thurman describes is rare, indeed. This book is a training manual for those who would live in this world with souls untouched by its cruelty.

A few months later, my sister and I planned a weekend in Europe, and partly because of this book, I convinced my sister we had to spend a weekend in Rome. Shortly after, I spent a week in Florence, and it was the very first time I felt like an informed tourist, knowing what I was marveling at.The Agony and the Ecstasy is a novel-like biography of Michelangelo intertwined with historical accounts and facts about his life. It is written in such a way you won't want to put the book down. I felt like I lived inside Michelangelo's head; like I really got to know his person, simultaneously studying art and design history. It's set during the Italian Renaissance, and Michelangelo was a central figure of that glorious period. The book is filled with information. So far, it is the most substantial book I've read, and it's the first time I've taken my time reviewing a book.The book is by no means an easy read; It took me weeks to finish. In fact, when I first bought it, I had to set it aside before I made it halfway, and I had to re-read it from the start. As I read the last pages, my heart ached as Michelangelo was getting weaker and weaker. It was quite an experience feeling like I lived side by side such a genius. All the masterpieces he forged during his life—just wow!This book has sparked a deeper interest in me for art and design, and now for a newfound love: sculpture.Thank you, Irving Stone, for this masterpiece of a book. I first read this book when it originally came out. And when my book club decided to read it, I didn't object because I remembered that I liked it. Well, I think I enjoyed it more the second time. I was fascinated by the historical background and learned a lot about that time period....and about the making of sculpture. The characters were fleshed out enough to be interesting and added information to what I had learned in history classes--although as in all historical fiction, it would be nice to know what is real and what is the author's imagination. The book is well written and an easy and interesting read. If you are planning a trip to Italy, I would definitely put it on my pre-trip reading list.

What could I read to be on par with Mr. Stone's creation?"Let's say that from now on, I will never look at sculpture or art as a whole with the same eyes.Even though I knew that it was a biography work, I still read it like a fiction book and this helped putting me in every situation described.

I just came back from 6 weeks in Florence where I lived across the street from where Michaelangelo grew up. This book was such fun to read, all tI had walked all over Florence and it was fun to see how the familiar places were hundreds of years ago - I learned a lot of history - seems to have been extremely well - researched. Stone quoted poetry by Michaelangelo when relevant. It was an amazing look at a facscinating, but difficult life. I had no idea he really never had enough money as his father was always dunning him to help out with some scheme or other that never seemed to succeed,and did not appreciate his art at all except for the money it paid. There is a lot about how he prepared for his sculpture. Read the book first, then see the movie which is not as accurate but also good.

I read it 35 years ago and it made me fall in love with art. A recent trip to Italy and seeing Michelangelo's artwork in person inspired me to re-read the book - it's still fantastic.

A well documented story of Michelangelo and his time that becomes a novel while you discover the renaissance of Lorenzo il Magnifico, the gloomy world of Savonarola and the intrigues and weaknesses of the Popes. Very well written and interesting, it tells you of lost masterpieces and of how famous artists of the time, such as Botticelli, Leonardo and Raphael, interacted in a blessed period for art. The portrait of Michelangelo as a hard-working, withdrawn and lonely individual with an incredible talent is powerful. Unputdownable.

I loved this book so much and couldn't believe I could get so "into it". It is brilliantly written and brings all the character to life with such awareness of their feelings and determination. Michaelangelo had to be given his gift by God. No one could have such obsessive, unequalled talent otherwise.What I loved the most, was his relentless determination to sculpt I could not have imagined how difficult and what talent it took to make creations like "David", the "Pieta, "Moses", "Christ on the Cross", and the unimaginable "Sistine Chapel" lying on his back for 4 years!!!! I felt as though I knew him personally by the time I finished this masterpiece.

Here is a timeless masterpiece , written so beautifully about the great genius of Michaelangelo. Having read many years ago, I am traveling to Rome and wanted to freshen my memory. HOWEVER the size of this paperback is so very small , reading in this format is difficult and uncomfortable. I do not recommend this particular publication. Really disappointed.
