Within a couple years of moving to the South (born in Ohio, lived in Seattle and many places overseas), I was so completely in love that I had adopted the slogans, "American by birth, Southerner by the grace of God" and "I wasn't born here, but I got here as fast as I could." This book was the validation of what I instinctively felt not long after moving here - that the roots of the South, especially the Appalachians, were extremely American in all the best senses of the word. Whether you love the South or hate it, this book is a worthy expedition into history in a way that makes you feel good about America, period.

I definitely enjoyed reading this book. I never knew so many well known individuals were from the Appalachia area. There was only one incorrect fact in the book. The author states that Randolph-Macon College is located in southwest Virginia. This is not true, it is located in central Virginia, which technically makes it not in Appalachia.
I'd heard about the book a few years back but let it slip by. This time I ordered several copies. They have set in motion a volley of comments and links to other materials. Those of us with Appalacian roots who were a bit wary of sharing this fact in public conversations are standing tall.
Good read!
Mr. Biggers' objective to was to challenge the prevailing stereotype of Appalachian people and he has produced an interesting, well-written and well-researched collection of portraits of Appalachians who do not match that stereotype. But I question whether the people profiled in this book are fairly representative of Appalachian people. Some more attention to the lives of Appalachian people who did not become famous would have improved the book in my opinion. While definitely worth reading, the title promises more than the book is able to deliver.
