Yes it's "out of date" but like everything, cooking evolves. This is a great snapshot of Japan's cooking in the 1960s. The photos and text are sumptuous and fun for those who appreciate history.

It's an old book published by Time/Life but the information is timeless. I have several in the series and love them all.

Book was undamaged but yellowed and dingy. Recipes very complex and ingredients difficult to acquire. Doubt I'll prepare any of them.

This book is now over 40 years old and not easy to come by. It won't be of much interest or use to those simply looking for a good Japanese cookery book as it is very dated and the illustrations are, by more recent standards, very poor. However, those who have a serious passion for Japanese cuisine and cookbooks of all sorts, this will be a great addition to a collection. Compared to many contemporary publications, this book is actually quite good (as was most of the series to which it belongs), but it's interest is mainly historical. There is a lot of supplementary textual information that is a bit dated now and it it is interesting to read some recipes for appetizers that appear to have been fashionable at one time but which seem to have fallen out of fashion. I am very pleased to have this book in my collection.

My mother received this cookbook as a gift around 1970, and it now belongs to me. It was my first introduction to the beauty of Japanese cooking. Somewhat outdated now, it is still a nice choice for those interested in the cultural history of Japanese cuisine. The photographs are beautiful, befitting a Time/Life publication. I don't often refer to the book for recipes, having a number of more recent Japanese cookbooks, but I do enjoy reading the text.

As one with BPD who has spent the last 8 months in therapy and has completed a 3 month DBT course I can say I actively practice dialectics with this book. I love and hate it. If there is a spectrum of this diagnosis id be on the opposite end of Kiera as my period of self harm was brief and isolated to adolescence, and I've never been hospitalized nor tried to take my own life. However this book became so relatable at times I had to walk away and practice my DBT skills to not be triggered. Other times I felt myself angry and envious of Kiera who always seemed to have her bills paid, a place to live, and whether healthy or not, a consistent boyfriend putting up with all of her issues. The part that was missing most for me in this book, (although it would be impossible to do in hindsight) was the minutia of the dissociation. It makes me want a journal of minute to minute feelings to accurately portray how varied and confusing they are. When I'm in therapy on a day where everything is peachy I have a hard time recalling my most recent (sometimes days or hours before) episode with anything more than apathy because that flight of emotion is gone and I no longer feel in the depths of an emotion mind out. Sometimes I felt her experiences were glossed over. It's one thing to say I laid in bed and cried for hours, it's another to say that minute to minute in those hours my mind went from self loathing, to self pity, to empathy and back ten times over.This book was suggested to me by my therapist and I'm glad I read it. Kiera definitely has made me feel understood and given me a camaraderie I hadn't found prior to this read.

A compelling read for anyone struggling with borderline personality disorder and I would, with much confidence, stretch this recommendation to anyone suffering. Doubtful there isn’t a human being alive that couldn’t relate to the words that pour from the pages of this incredible read, The Buddha and the Borderline. The words are filled with raw emotional honesty from the first page through to the last and it is in this integrity, this unique authenticity that it most resonated with this reader. I was drawn to this author because of the recent Thomas fire in California. I saw some of her posts on social media. I was impressed with the compassion she demonstrated to others, heartfelt kindness in light of the fact her own home burned to the ground. She lost everything: her clothes, her precious artwork, her pages of writing—incomplete books, and her furniture. But what she didn’t lose was her dignity and immense heart. I wanted to know more about her and in doing so came to a gofundme page that told her story and linked me with this book. As I sit here, after having closed the last page, I’m taken with the emotions this near stranger has elicited in me but more significantly the loss for adequate words to express how her outpouring, every bleeding exposure, left me feeling I just don’t have adequate words. The best expression I can give is to highly recommend this book. To all who want to get real with themselves, to all who dare to face their insides, and to all who dare to walk through the fires to know what it is to own your own personality, heart and soul.

My therapist recommended this book to me after diagnosing me as having BPD, and recommending DBT to me. I began reading it before starting DBT therapy, and like the other reviewers, it is comforting in some respects to read someone else's journey. It can be triggering. If cutting is your issue, you may find this book really triggering. It's not mine, but I'm squeamish, and her cutting issues definitely caused me discomfort. I think what I like best about this book is the fact that I view myself as "not in as bad of shape" as the author. It definitely made me feel less panicked about my own issues "Hey, I'm not THAT bad!" I did relate to her issues with her mother. The episode when they went into therapy together was enlightening to me. I think my mother and I are definitely two people who "cope" very differently and don't understand why the other one won't "cope" the way we do. Overall, I recommend it to anyone, but especially to women with a BPD diagnosis and/or are going through DBT.

I began reading this memoir after putting down "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me" -- I personally stopped reading it because it felt cold to me and made me feel even worse about being a Borderline. This book was exactly what I needed at the exact time I needed it. I'll refrain from telling my whole Borderline Personality Disorder story here other than this: I'm a 27-year-old wife and mother that lives a seemingly normal life on the outside, but suffers immensely with this disorder. I am just now in the process of finding healing and therapy. The Buddha and the Borderline is what honestly what pushed me to take my mental health into my hands. I listened to the audio of this book and read it as well. Now my husband is reading it to learn more about me. I don't know if you read these reviews, but if you do, thank you, Kiara.

Thoughtful mémoire on what it's like to have BPD. Wish she'd gone more into her relationship with Taylor, all the reasons she decided it wouldn't work out, and whether she now thinks it was for the best since this was the most intimate relationship described in the book, and the only deep one post-recovery. This is admittedly a self-serving wish, as I recently had to end a relationship with a woman I love but can no longer endure without her getting proper treatment. It is a little disappointing that the story ends with her still struggling more than I'd hoped, but it is honest, thorough, and very much appreciated.

There hasnt been anything that i have ever read, experienced or talked about that portrays BPD quite as realistically as this book. Never feel alone guys, Kiera has literally been thru it all like the rest of us. Her journey is fascinating and enlightening even tho she doesnt downplay a single facet of her struggle.Its the most honest personal account- of anything- that i have ever read. More than ever, i felt like i wasnt alone or weird or that i was different. Kiera gave me that, and its a rare things to have- surprisingly in such a connected world.

This book is a short, very short, introduction to stoic philosophy as Echiridion knew it. This isn't really a book that reads like a philosophy book, it is a series of thoughts about life and how to live it as set down by the ancient thinker Enchiridion.Enchiridion was an obvious genious and some of his thoughts may be a bit hard to follow, but his insights are timeless and the presentation of the stoic way of thinking is well done. Of course, Enchiridion does not say "Here is stoic philosophy in a nutshell..." but by carefully following his thought processes through the clips of thought presented in this short work one can grasp how a stoic must approach life.A good read.AD2

My whole life before finding out about this book I was always inadvertently adhering to the guidelines of a stoic philosopher, but couldn't properly articulate my thoughts and organize them as well as I would have. Epictetus puts all of my thoughts in deep and timeless prose, conveniently split up into perfect, bite-sized chunks with memorable lines and quotes.Probably what I like most about Epictetus' teachings is that he has not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. His background only supports his stoic teachings experiences even further by showing that even a near-disabled slave forced to work for most of his early life, with no safety net to fall back on, can be free and happy. I can't think of a stronger test of a way of life than that one.The basic stoic philosophy is that our fate is already decided for us and we are powerless to control it, and though we apply both negative and positive connotations towards events that occur within our fate, ultimately fate (or as he refers to it as "the gods' will") is beyond our understanding and is neutral, so we are the only ones left that are punishing ourselves in times of seeming crisis. The true secret to happiness is learning to accept that we can't control outside forces, but we have total control and power over our own opinions and actions. Through this method of thought, the stoic philosopher can endure the harshest, most crippling events, and come out unscathed or possibly even stronger, knowing that any negativity coming from any events is his own product of his ego lashing out to protect itself.With the lessons of Epictetus, you can learn to not run or hide from entropy and by doing so live your life in fear and senseless anger, but rather embrace it. And in your embracing of chaos you begin to realize that the universe is not in fact the recklessness you imagined, but ironically an almost entirely organized system of random acts. If you or someone you know are going through a hard time in life, there is almost no better reading than this book.

I love how thin and concise this book is, but I feel like some of Epictetus' ideas are somewhat unclear as a result of the translation.If you're reading this for the first time then I would probably look for a version for a better translation. This is a great idea. This is not only helpful for people who are older and have eyesight issues. The check registers you get with your checks are almost too small for anyone to adequately use. Love this product !

I bought this register for my 84-year-old father because he needed more space than normal checkbook registers provide (line height of entry space so small). He would use up several lines per entry. He is very happy with this register. It has exactly the same columns as a regular register, but lots more space to write, which also makes it much easier for him to read what he wrote. To improve the product, however, I wish it was spiral bound instead of a glued spine so the pages can be layed flat when using. I chose this register because I did not see a spiral-bound one offered on Amazon.

By making everyone in the world accessible to everyone else, the Internet has given us the collective ability to create an avalanche – literally millions or billions -- of cover letters, resumes and related job-seeking correspondence. These electronic files land in the laps of the corporate recruiters whose job it is to screen them, almost getting crushed in the process.In self-defense, corporate recruiters and HR departments have created a labyrinth of databases, job boards, codes, systems and procedures that make their companies virtually impenetrable. Along the way, he indicates specifically which of today’s hot media to use and which not.Once all that is done, and the resume is getting noticed, Martin then goes on to guide the candidate through the interviewing, follow up, offer and hiring process.What worries me most about Martin’s new book is not what it is, but how it may be used. While it has full and engaging explanations and strong intellectual content, the book is not meant to serve as an intellectual exercise. What Martin has to teach will only work if it is actually implemented. So for instance, when he relates how to handle a particularly tricky interview question, it is not enough to read it and nod.Rather, the reader needs to convert Martin’s lingual style to his or her own, outlining his or her answers and practicing them until they are reflexive. That action will arm the candidate’s behavioral arsenal with real and useful ammo for the interviews.It’s important to do this because if you’re looking for a job, you really want to complete your search and start at your new post soon, before the year is up and the marketplace changes yet again.

Recently I decided to make a career change and scale back on my hours at work so I can spend more time coordinating services for my son who has been diagnosed with autism. My boss, unfortunately, made the decision to cut my whole team as a result. I picked up this book (with a dozen other job search books) at the library and was just sucked in. I've spent countless hours going through the exercises and my resume is shaping up to be a mind-blowing work of art. I've also tagged the sections on 'Skills and Values' and 'Networking' and am going to leverage those throughout the rest of my career.As a result of how helpful this book is, I purchased a copy not only for myself but also my team. I can say that no outplacement service or webinars or any other source of tools for your job transition is as effective and easy to learn as this, especially if you are older and starting over - get this book and the Secrets and Strategies book and, it will change your life!

This book has been an incredible resource for me while I navigate my career transition. I appreciate that it is fully comprehensive and promotes the integrated job search method. Completing the 'target job deconstruction' exercise takes time, but it has helped me shift and focus my resume/LinkedIn profile and ultimately, my mindset on my desired career trajectory. Yate's no nonsense and honest approach is refreshing-and the fact that this is updated on a yearly basis makes the content relevant. I've combined the resources in this book with additional professional career coaching and other websites I'm following through LinkedIn and believe I'm receiving the best advice there is to job search strategy! Now I just hope all my hard work will pay off. I do wish that his resume example in the book actually looked like his outline and exercises-the samples on the website align more completely. I also wish his website were more navigable and functional. Many items referenced in the book are hard to find or nonexistent on the website-and a lot of links/promotions are outdated.

If I had to put them in Order, I'd start with Turning Pro, then War of Art, then this. Artist's Journey is about the etherial & eternal challenges all artists have reaching into the metaphorical "box", pulling out something, putting their own effort & soul into it, & suffering what may come when they bring it into the world. Turning Pro is tactical, War of Art is strategic--but this is wholly philosophical.Three metaphors in the book stuck with me--this idea of returning people to their original state of innocence & understanding through the work. Think about fighting war to achieve peace--sounds like it shouldn't make sense, but there are those who gunwork & war is their art. The second metaphor is this idea of the two worlds an artist operates in: The material & immaterial. Artists grab inspiration & purity from one world, grounded it in this one for others to appreciate & enjoy.Finally--this idea of the inner daimon. The belief you have a calling, you've always had a calling. And you life running away from that is a distraction & danger. Ultimately, you have to submit to the daimon. Or you don't & you never live your life to it's fullest intent or extent. That's huge--but imagine the artists & the experts we venerate. Hitchcock was involved in creating over 60 movies. Elon Musk wants to end our dependence to oil & send us to Mars. But not the big names--my father taught middle school PE for 30 years. His devotion to education definitely led to my path in instructional design. We say those who face the journey are heroes. They're not--they're doing what they no other choice but to do.This book explains why spiritually & philosophically. Our work needs us as much as we need to bring it into the world.There's a great David Mamet quote on this too: The problem with any dramatist, especially ones doing it a long, long time, is you want to get these guys out of your head. You just want them to stop talking to you.

This book is the truth. Lately, I've been experiencing exactly what Steven describes in this book. I've been an artist all my life, spending a lot of time refusing the call and now helplessly committed to answering it. I thought I must be going a little crazy, but here it is in black and white and if it's crazy, I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Because like it or not (and I do), I'm on the journey. I loved the War of Art and Turning Pro and this book is similar but feels like we're much further down the path. I ate this book up, I love the bite-sized chapters and the concise style in which Steven writes. And at the end, when I read the thanks, I knew it was the end of the book but I turned the page somewhat hopeful anyway. When all I found was a blank page I thought, Oh no! I don't know what else could have been said but I was sorry the ride was over. Gonna take me a while to get over it. :)

Like many who have read this book, it felt like Steven was talking directly to me. I sometimes have a hard time balancing my desire for business success with my desire for artful success. I could not put this book down. I had to immediately purchase his other books. I started reading this book on the plane traveling to New York to see the US Open of Tennis. We were also going to be taking in some Broadway shows. Every Broadway show I see sparks my creative desires to be fully invested in creativity. I sometimes struggle with how to take up this path, which is why the book spoke to me at just the right time. If you have that burning desire in you, that desperate need to be on a creative quest, this book is a must read for you. I myself left my small upstate New York village of Caledonia and headed for Hollywood. I left my five-year career with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, to head west and join the L.A. Sheriff's Department, knowing deep in my soul I needed to be in L.A. to fulfill my desires for success in comedy and acting. Now retired from the Sheriff's Department, I now need to hone my focus on my creative goals. Cop, writer, comedian, producer, actor, I find myself with too many targets, and not enough lifetimes to fulfill too many dreams.
